Agent: Roberts following doctor's orders
January 13
Baltimore Sun
"
Brian Roberts' decision not to attend next weekend's FanFest because the event could have an adverse effect on his slow recovery from a concussion has again made the Orioles second baseman a target of criticism. But, according to Roberts' agent, the 34-year-old is simply following doctor's orders -- that bright lights and noisy atmospheres can be counterproductive to someone dealing with concussion symptoms. "He has taken the advice of his doctor, and you can't blame him for it," said Mark Pieper, Roberts' agent.

Orioles' Roberts 'highly doubtful' to attend FanFest
January 12
Baltimore Sun
"
Because of lingering symptoms of a concussion suffered 16 months ago, Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts most likely will be skipping next weekend's FanFest at the Baltimore Convention Center. A club source said it was "highly doubtful" Roberts, who played in just 39 games in 2011 because of the concussion, would be at the Jan. 21 event but it "is not completely out of the realm of possibility." Roberts was originally slated to be there, and vouchers for one of his two joint autograph sessions had sold out. But he recently informed the club that, because he has been advised by doctors the event could cause further stress, he would not be attending. The team is hoping, however, that he

Among the Orioles attending the annual children's holiday party at Dave & Buster's at the Arundel Mills Mall on Tuesday was second baseman Brian Roberts, who is attempting to come back from a concussion that limited him to just 39 games in 2011. "I'm just going day by day trying to do a little more," said Roberts, who first suffered the concussion in September 2010, when he tapped himself on the helmet with a bat after an at-bat. "Just taking it slow and trying to get better every day. That's about all I can tell you, really."

Showalter says he's unsure whether Brian Roberts will be ready for spring training

"
Orioles manager Buck Showalter touched on a number of subjects during his sit-down with the national media on Monday, including the status of second baseman Brian Roberts and the likely composition of the infield next season. Showalter said the reports he is getting in his periodic conversations with Roberts are encouraging, but he can't predict whether his veteran second baseman will be ready to play full-time next spring. "We don't have any reason to think one way or the other,'' Showalter said. "It's an inexact science. I'm not going to sit here and say I'm an expert on concussions. So far, so good."

Just over a year ago, on Sept. 27, 2010, the Orioles were leading the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-0, in the ninth inning of a largely meaningless road game when second baseman Brian Roberts came to the plate. He felt prepared for the at-bat, and believed reliever Joaquin Benoit would throw him a changeup. With the count 2-2, the right-hander did. Roberts still swung and missed. "Sometimes the pitcher could tell you what's coming and you still wouldn't execute your plan right," he says, clearly still miffed. On his way to the dugout, he did something he has done countless times: in frustration, he thwacked himself on the helmet with his bat. All of Tropicana Field began to whirl. And so began a

It is only about a 45-minute ride from Brian Roberts' house in Sarasota to Tropicana Field, but the trip represented yet another difficult hurdle in the veteran second baseman's return from a concussion. "It was a huge step for me to get in the car," said Roberts, whose voice cracked several times Friday as he talked with reporters while seated next to Orioles manager Buck Showalter. The 33-year-old was around some of his teammates for one of the first times since he last played May 16. "I don't mean that in a negative way. I mean that because I take a lot of pride in wanting to be here, doing what I'm supposed to be doing, and [Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos] has put a lot of investment

Brian Roberts still isn't ready to give a timetable for his return to the Orioles' lineup, but the veteran second baseman feels like he is making legitimate progress for the first time since starting to experience concussion symptoms May 16. Roberts, who will be out at least through the All-Star break, said in a phone interview that his past couple of workouts have gone well and he's starting to increase the intensity of his conditioning program each day. "I'm feeling pretty good. I'm definitely getting better, and that's certainly been encouraging," Roberts, whose recent daily conditioning routine has included jogging and playing catch at the Orioles' minor league complex in Sarasota,

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who hasn't played since incurring concussion symptoms after sliding headfirst into first base May 16, has been shut down from baseball activities for at least two more weeks. Roberts was re-examined by sports concussion specialist Dr. Michael Collins in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, and, though he can begin cardio and weight work soon, the leadoff man will not pick up a baseball for two more weeks, at the earliest. Second baseman Brian Roberts, who started Monday's contest with a head-first slide into first base to beat out an infield single, was put on the seven-day concussion disabled list. As the Orioles tried to figure out their convoluted pitching situation, they were faced with another roster challenge when leadoff hitter and second baseman Brian Roberts was taken to a local hospital on Friday night to have tests taken on his stomach. A sellout crowd of 46,593, which enjoyed a game-time temperature of 76 degrees, watched Jake Arrieta continue the early roll of the Orioles' rotation, Roberts continue his RBI binge with his tie-breaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and the home team continue its winning ways. On a day when they performed terribly on the field, the Orioles got much-needed positive news on the injury front as the imaging results on Brian Roberts and Justin Duchscherer turned up no new concerns and Derrek Lee and Koji Uehara moved closer to seeing game action. Still, there is no timetable on any of the four, and they are running out of time with Opening Night on April 1. Orioles manager Buck Showalter described Duchscherer's chances of making the Opening Day rotation as being "in peril" and said Roberts' opening the season with the club remains a "possibility," a softening of the stance team officials have taken on the second baseman for much of the spring. Just a few weeks after reporting to spring training camp and expressing confidence that his recent health issues are behind him, second baseman Brian Roberts is again dealing with back pain. Roberts, who has been sidelined since Monday after experiencing back spasms, had "trigger-point injections" Friday and is scheduled to have an MRI on Saturday. "We don't know. We'll just have to see," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "Fortunately, this is a doctor that he saw last year. We had plenty of MRIs from last year. After the Orioles' workout had ended Saturday and many of his teammates had headed to the clubhouse, Brian Roberts put on his batting gloves and headed to a back field to take a few more swings. It was an encouraging sight to the Orioles after the second baseman had missed their previous three workouts with a stiff neck, renewing concerns about his health. "I wasn't worried about it being anything major, but any time you're hurt as a baseball player, you got to think about it. I wasn't overly concerned," Roberts said. "I felt fine. Despite Brian Roberts' missing a third straight workout Friday because of a stiff neck, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said the club isn't yet concerned about the status of the team's second baseman and leadoff man. Roberts, who has been sidelined by muscle spasms that he says are unrelated to the herniated disk in his back that limited him to 59 games last year, has been getting daily treatment, and he says he could play if it were the regular season. So far things are going well for the Orioles at Camp Showalter in Sarasota, where it's sunny every day — at least metaphorically — and most of the vibes are positive. Oh, sure, Brian Roberts gave everyone a little scare Wednesday when he missed the morning workout with a sore neck and went for X-rays. The Orioles' second baseman probably led the league in X-rays and MRI's when his bad back sidelined him for most of last season. So the Orioles tend to get jittery whenever he so much as coughs, never mind when he complains of soreness somewhere. But when Roberts returned to camp, he told reporters he didn't think the neck was a big deal. "We probably all had a stiff neck at some point in our

If it were any other player, the news that an Oriole left Ed Smith Stadium to get his stiff neck examined would probably have been greeted with little more than a collective yawn. However, this was Brian Roberts, and questions about his health figure to loom over spring training after he played just 59 games last year because of a herniated disk in his back. "We've probably all had a stiff neck at some point in our life, right?" Roberts said. "I'm not overly concerned." Roberts had X-rays taken on his neck, and manager Buck Showalter said the second baseman and leadoff man had only muscle spasms, "nothing other than that." The Orioles' recent flurry of middle-infield additions prompted questions about the health of Brian Roberts, but the veteran second baseman told The Baltimore Sun on Monday that he's feeling great and he thinks his back problems are behind him. Roberts, a two-time All-Star and the longest-tenured member of the club, was limited to just 59 games last year because of a herniated disk in his back. He also suffered a concussion in late September that knocked him out of the Orioles' final six games and lingered well into the offseason. "I'm doing great. After six days of not playing and not talking to the media, second baseman Brian Roberts met with reporters in manager Buck Showalter's office following Sunday's season finale and said he has been dealing with concussionlike symptoms that occurred after he hit himself in the helmet with a bat. "I don't know 100 percent sure, but it was Monday night. In frustration [after a strikeout], I whacked myself on the head with my bat in the ninth. I had my helmet on," Roberts said. Brian Roberts, who hasn't played since Monday because of headaches, was held out of both ends of Friday's doubleheader. The Orioles second baseman has missed four straight games and has played in just 59 this season because of various injuries and ailments, including a large chunk of the season because of a herniated disk in his back. "[He's] about the same, not the improvement we had hoped to see," manager Buck Showalter said about Roberts. "A day-to-day thing with him." Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will not return this winter to the Athletes' Performance facility in Arizona, where he has been doing his offseason workouts since 2002. However, it has nothing to do with the state of the herniated disk in his back. In fact, Roberts said, since returning to the Orioles' lineup in late July after a 3 1/2-month absence, he has had no problems with his back and doesn't expect the injury to significantly affect his offseason workouts. "I will make some adjustments, and part of it will be certainly staying away from some things that could cause me problems, but I don't foresee anything," said Roberts, who will be relocating from Arizona to Sarasota, Fla.,

New Orioles manager Buck Showalter is stating the obvious when he says baseball is a game of adjustments. But the way Showalter sees it, the Orioles have spent too many seasons -- 13, to be exact -- adjusting their starting lineups and rotations to the rest of the American League. "We got some things we can bring, too," Showalter said before Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. "We've been making people make adjustments to some things we're doing now. We want to be more proactive than reactive." The Orioles have not only improved dramatically in the week since Showalter took over, but they also have become proactive. The latest example came in Monday's 3-2 victory at Camden

There were very few positives on the field during the Orioles' 1-6 trip, which ended Sunday with a 5-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. However, the recent play of Brian Roberts certainly should ease concerns about the second baseman's future. Roberts, who was held out of the starting lineup Sunday as the organization continues to try to give him periodic days off, went 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, three runs and a stolen base in five games on the trip. He also felt no ill effects from the herniated disk in his back that kept him out of the lineup and on the disabled list for nearly 31/2 months. O's Roberts hopes to join team late this week

Second baseman Brian Roberts will continue his rehabilitation assignment Monday at Double-A Bowie and could rejoin the Orioles by late this week. Roberts, who hasn't played a game with the Orioles since April 9 because of a herniated disk in his back, was originally hoping to return by Aug. 1, but barring a setback, he'll beat that estimate by more than a week. Interim manager Juan Samuel spoke to Roberts on Saturday, and the two-time All-Star told him that he needs about 15 more at-bats before returning to the Orioles' lineup. Roberts even joked that he was going to try to talk his way into the Orioles' lineup Monday for the series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, but Samuel made it

Second baseman Brian Roberts, who played just four games this season before aggravating his back injury, has played in a game. He had three singles in three at-bats while leading off for the Gulf Coast League Orioles today. It's his first minor league rehab game, and so we are talking baby steps here. But Sunday in Texas, Orioles manager Juan Samuel said Roberts was still just hitting against coaches, so today's development is certainly a positive one.

Roberts could return in four to six weeks

Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel said he spoke to Brian Roberts on Tuesday afternoon and the injured second baseman's timetable for return is four to six weeks. "He's a couple of weeks away from baseball activities from what he told me," Samuel said. "But it sounds like in four to six weeks, we should see him around here. According to the report, that's basically what the target is. To me, it's a positive for us. There's so much uncertainty there. That's something that we're going to be looking forward to, but at the same time, we want him to get comfortable." Roberts received an epidural in his lower back -- his third of the season -- in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Friday after extensive

While second baseman Brian Roberts (herniated disk) could be shut down from baseball activities for another couple of weeks, the other injured Orioles could be returning a lot sooner than the club originally expected. Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said Monday that outfielder Felix Pie and relievers Michael Gonzalez, Koji Uehara and Jim Johnson could be ready to return to the club by the end of the month, a development interim manager Juan Samuel appreciates. "All those guys will be welcome here," Samuel said, flashing a wide smile. "We do need some help." Pie, who hasn't played since April 15 because of a torn muscle in his back, will take batting practice Tuesday

The Brian Roberts injury saga continues. Roberts, who has played just four games this season because of a herniated disk, had an epidural injection in his back Friday in St. Petersburg, Fla., Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel said. It's the third such shot he's had since spring training began. After the last two, Roberts rested for a couple weeks before beginning light exercises. Roberts didn't return a phone call Friday, but it's likely that timetable will continue. Samuel said Roberts will be re-evaluated Tuesday in Florida. "They will do some follow-ups on Tuesday and I guess they are going to decide from there what the next move is going to be," Samuel said. Roberts, during his

Injured second baseman Brian Roberts will undergo more testing on his back over the next few days, a development that will shut him down from baseball activities and further calls into question whether he'll be able to return this season. Roberts, who still hasn't been able to play in an extended spring training game, saw a back specialist Tuesday in Florida, and it was determined that he should undergo more testing before a diagnosis is made. "The additional testing is not a good sign," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "They're just going to put him through some additional tests, and obviously that's backing up the on-field activity. But we don't know more than

Injured Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will play in his first extended spring training game Friday and could start a rehabilitation stint at one of the organization's minor league affiliates as early as June 10. It's the best news the Orioles have gotten in weeks on Roberts, who hasn't played since April 9 because of a herniated disk in his back. "He'll play five innings, play second base, get a few at-bats," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "I got it scheduled for the next five or six days for him; I would think after that he'd go on rehab." Roberts reported to the team's spring training complex in Sarasota, Fla., on Friday and took batting practice from both sides of the plate

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will head to Sarasota, Fla., on Friday to resume his rehabilitation program, which has been delayed more than a week by a bout of pneumonia that landed him in the hospital for two nights. "I think the scariest part was when they started testing for stuff just to find out what it was," said Roberts, who has played in just four games this season. "Sure it scares you a little bit, but I assumed, the way I felt, I had a pretty good case of the flu or something, but the doctors were great and everything seems to be fine." Roberts missed most of spring training with a herniated disk in his back, and he aggravated the injury when he dove into second base

Orioles injured second baseman Brian Roberts didn't board a plane today headed for Sarasota, Fla., like he originally planned in order to begin his rehab program for the herniated disk in his back. Roberts, instead, was at a Baltimore area hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. I don't know much more than that because I haven't been able to reach Roberts or his agent, Mark Pieper. I'm not sure if he has been released or not, but it sounds like Roberts is doing better. "We don't anticipate that it's going to be anything that impacts his rehabilitation schedule," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said.

Roberts hoping for some baseball activites later this week

Injured second baseman Brian Roberts said that he's feeling "OK," and he's hoping to engage in some smaller baseball activities later this week. "It's still slower than I would like, than what I was hoping for," said Roberts who hasn't played since April 9 because of a herniated disk in his back. "We're hoping to start making some progress later this week." Roberts said that he still has no idea when he'll be able to return to the Orioles' lineup. "Physically, I haven't had any setbacks," he said. "It's just one of those things were time is the key factor, I think."

Roberts not close to return from back injury

More than three weeks since he last played, Orioles leadoff hitter Brian Roberts still has not resumed baseball activities, and he has no idea when he will. What the second baseman does feel confident about is that he'll return this year and won't need season-ending surgery to repair the herniated disk in his back. "Surgery is not something that we've even discussed," said Roberts, who last played April 9. "Being out until October is not something that we've even discussed. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's three weeks or three months. I don't think it is three months. It definitely feels better than that Saturday after [the home opener]. But we're still waiting to see some improvement

Roberts not close, surgery still not being discussed

Injured Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts (herniated disk) remains at least three weeks away from returning to the lineup, and that's probably the best case scenario. "At this point, we just don't really have a timetable yet," Roberts said today. "We're continuing to do some physical therapy. I don't know. It could be three weeks from now, it could be three months from now. Honestly, I don't know." One thing Roberts, who hasn't played since April 9 and still hasn't even been cleared to do baseball activities, does know is that season-ending surgery currently isn't an option. "Surgery is not something we've discussed and being out until October is not something we've discussed," Roberts

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is not participating in baseball-related activities and has no target for his return, but he still believes he will play at some point this season. "I can't really put a timetable on anything, just because we don't really have one right now," Roberts said following the Orioles' 12-9 win over the Red Sox on Saturday night. Roberts dismissed the notion that Thursday's endoscopy would slow his return, and said the test was simply done for personal reasons. "Everything's good," he said. Manager Dave Trembley said earlier in the week that Roberts was suffering from flu-like symptoms, and the test was more of a precautionary measure, given the different

So much for the good sentiment surrounding Sunday's win and the end of a nine-game losing streak. The Orioles learned today that outfielder Felix Pie will be out for at least three months after he tore the latissimus dorsi muscle off the bone. Pie, whose injury was initially classified as a strained muscle in his upper back, had a magnetic resonance imaging performed today and then visited another doctor, when the diagnosis was made. "The prognosis is just to rest, no surgery needed," said Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. "But the probable time when he can return, we’re probably looking at three months. The Orioles lost again tonight, this time by a 4-2 score to the Oakland A's. They also lost another player to the disabled list as outfielder Felix Pie, who had been one of the few guys swinging a decent bat, joined Brian Roberts, Michael Gonzalez and Koji Uehara on the DL. About the only piece of good news was the Roberts, a couple of days removed from getting his second epidural to ease the discomfort from the herniated disk in his back, had a positive appointment with back specialist Dr. Lee Riley.

Back injury likely to sideline Orioles' Roberts most of April

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts received his second epidural shot for the herniated disk in his back Monday and likely will be sidelined most of April. Before Monday's game, the Orioles placed their leadoff hitter on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal, which he injured while sliding into second base during a steal in the first inning of Friday's home opener. When Roberts hit the corner of second base on the steal, it jarred his ailing back, which had kept him out of all but six games during spring training. "It probably irritated some nerves in areas of the lower back, which caused now the abdomen to hurt again, the back to flare up again," Orioles manager Dave
