Brandon Webb News

D-Backs pick up Webb's option
"The Diamondbacks just sent out a release announcing they have exercised the 2010 option on pitcher Brandon Webb, a decision they had to make by Monday. "Since Brandon has recovered well from his surgery, we have decided to exercise his option," General Manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement. "His accomplishments for our organization have been significant. We look forward to him returning to the mound." Webb will make $8.5 million next season. Webb had shoulder surgery on Aug. 4, a "debridement" procedure that cleaned up his rotator cuff and labrum."
Webb to stay in desert for 2010
"The Diamondbacks are planning to pick up Brandon Webb's $8.5 million option now that he's turned down their other compromise offers. Arizona was hoping Webb would be willing to share the "risk'' -- to accept a slightly lower guarantee with incentives that could push him past $10 million. But Webb said no to that. The D-Backs also offered to add an option for 2010, but he turned that down, too. So he'll be a D-Back in 2010 but become a free agent after the '10 season."
Webb eyes free agency if option declined
"If the D-backs do not intend to pick up his option for next season, right-hander Brandon Webb said he will test the free-agent market. The D-backs hold an $8.5 million option on Webb for next year and will owe him $2 million should they choose not to exercise the option."I have not heard it from the horse's mouth, but there's been a lot of speculation about them coming to me and trying to work out a deal with an option and incentives and stuff like that," Webb said. "And everybody keeps asking me if I'd be interested if they did that, and basically no, I'm not interested in doing that."While saying that his first choice is to remain in Arizona, Webb thinks it would be in his best interests ..."
Webb not interested in incentive-laden deal
"Brandon Webb has a message for the Arizona Diamondbacks: Either they pick up his $8.5 million option for next season or he'll become a free agent. Webb, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in August, said Tuesday that he has no interest in signing an incentive-laden deal that would be based on innings, starts or days on the active roster. "I've got to go out and see what's best for me," said Webb, who started on opening day, then was sidelined for the season. "I think I can get (the $8.5 million) anywhere I want." Webb's preference is to remain with the Diamondbacks. But he believes the club should show some faith in him after what he's done for the organization: 56 wins the ..."
Webb not interested in taking pay cut
"Right-hander Brandon Webb said if Diamondbacks executives are preparing to approach him about restructuring his $8.5 million contract option for 2010, they ought to save their breath. He's not interested. Webb, who hasn't pitched since Opening Day because of an injury to his pitching shoulder, said Tuesday that he is not willing to pitch for less or re-do his deal based on incentive clauses. The Diamondbacks haven't indicated their plans to Webb, the National League Cy Young winner in 2006 and the runner-up the past two seasons. But there has been speculation that they might ask him to restructure his pay because of his shoulder. He underwent arthroscopic surgery last month. "No. I'm not ..."
D-Backs' Webb to see specialist
"With problems persisting in his right shoulder, Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb will pay another visit to specialist Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, as he determines his next course of treatment. It appears shoulder surgery is again a possibility for Webb, who has gone through two extended periods of rest and strengthening exercises this season but has made no progress toward a return to the mound. Webb did not travel with the team to New York, where it begins a four-game series with the Mets on Friday, and will see Meister on Sunday, Byrnes said. "He's missed virtually the whole year and we're trying to figure out the best course for getting back to pitching," Diamondbacks General ..."
Shoulder surgery for Webb looking likely
"Shoulder surgery appears to be a strong possibility for Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Webb, who on Tuesday underwent his second MRI in the past week and met later in the day with team physician Dr. Michael Lee. "We met and discussed options," General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "Everyone wants to be sure he takes the right course of action." One possibility appears to be surgery to repair his labrum, a procedure that would require a nine-month rehab process. But a decision has not been made as Webb is expected to seek a second opinion this week. Webb flew home to Phoenix from Kansas City on Thursday, where he felt stiffness in his shoulder while playing catch, and on Friday, he ..."
D-backs unsure if Webb will pitch in '09
"The D-backs are still trying to determine if starter Brandon Webb's right shoulder will be healthy enough for him to pitch this season. "The priorities have shifted to making sure we know everything about his health, everything about what is causing his pain," D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. "Up to this point, we've done everything we can to alleviate that. We thought we cleared a hurdle. His health is priority No. 1. [Webb] pitching in 2009 is a distant second until we know about him physically." Webb had an MRI exam on his shoulder Tuesday and was evaluated by team doctor Michael Lee to determine the next course of action. The 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner has been on the ..."
Webb back home for MRI on shoulder
"Brandon Webb was scheduled to undergo an MRI test in Phoenix on Friday as the team tries to determine what exactly is wrong with his right shoulder and whether he will be able to pitch again this season.Webb began to experience discomfort in the shoulder toward the end of Spring Training and again during his Opening Day start. That was his lone appearance for the team this year.Since then, he has undergone programs to try to strengthen the shoulder, and the initial diagnosis was that he had a strain of the teres major muscle, which is located outside the joint in the shoulder. That is less serious than if there was a problem within the joint, such as with the rotator cuff or labrum. It was ..."
Webb could require surgery on shoulder
"Brandon Webb's troublesome shoulder will require more tests and maybe even surgery, and the possibility exists that the organization's most accomplished homegrown player has thrown his last pitch for the Diamondbacks. General Manager Josh Byrnes said Webb was sent back to Phoenix and was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine whether there is more structurally wrong with his shoulder than Webb and the club initially believed. The original diagnosis was a strained teres major, a muscle outside the shoulder joint, but with Webb continuing to experience stiffness and soreness, more tests are being done to determine whether there are problems with his rotator cuff or labrum. ..."
Webb's return this season in doubt
"Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was dealt another setback Thursday when he felt discomfort in his right shoulder during a throwing session, causing the Diamondbacks to cancel the bullpen session that had been scheduled for Friday in Seattle. Webb left the team and returned to Phoenix, where he will be re-evaluated, according to manager A.J. Hinch. The setback casts doubt on whether he will pitch again this season. "He didn't feel very good," Hinch said. "So it's a bad sign for us. We were so positive about where he was in his rehabilitation. He'll have to get further tests and see our doctors." Webb was seen by a reporter leaving Kauffman Stadium about an hour before Thursday night's game. ..."
Webb fed up with disabled list
"Brandon Webb is bored out of his gourd. He slumps back in the chair in front of his locker, unable to find something, anything, to pick up his spirits. The custom acoustic guitar nestled in its stand just in front of him? He's strummed it too many times to make a difference now. The huge box stuffed with expensive, radio-controlled airplanes and helicopters in the vacant locker to his right? He's flown them all, crashed a few, and now they just collect dust. Apparently, he's lost interest, too, in the half-taken-apart, gasoline-powered toy race car that sits on the floor next to his feet. After 2 1/2 months of moping around, only one thing can stir his passion again - pitching. Webb ..."
Injury report: Webb has bullpen date
"For every step forward that Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Webb has taken in his recovery process, there seems to have been two steps sideways. But he is poised to move closer to a return this week as his long-awaited bullpen session finally has a launch date. Webb, out because of a teres major muscle strain in his right shoulder, said Tuesday he is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday in Seattle, which would be his first time off a mound since April. "I feel like this past week, the last three times throwing, it's been real good," said Webb, who threw a flat-ground session in the outfield Tuesday. "I think it just keeps progressing. We're moving in the right direction. It ..."
Webb close to bullpen session
"Manager A.J. Hinch said the club still is aiming for this weekend for right-hander Brandon Webb's first bullpen session. Webb (shoulder) has thrown multiple flat-ground sessions in the past 10 days. First baseman Tony Clark (hand) begins a rehab assignment in Reno Thursday night. He likely will serve as designated hitter for the first two days. Hinch said Clark is a possibility to be activated next week when the club begins a road trip to Kansas City and Seattle for interleague play, meaning his bat could be utilized in the DH role."
Webb takes another step in recovery
"Feeling good following another flat-ground session Saturday afternoon, ace Brandon Webb said he is hoping to throw his first bullpen session late next week, perhaps Friday. Webb, out with a teres major muscle strain in his right shoulder, is looking forward to getting on the mound, particularly after "letting it go" in a 40-pitch session Saturday afternoon. "The last 10 (pitches) I cranked it up a little bit, and I felt like I was throwing fairly hard," he said. "That was good." He expects to throw a similar session Tuesday at Chase Field, take two days off and then get on the mound for the first time since April."
Webb slowly nearing return
"Slow and steady, right-hander Brandon Webb keeps inching closer to throwing off a mound and, ultimately, to a return to the Diamondbacks rotation. Webb threw a flat-ground session Saturday, firing 30 pitches, and plans to throw another Wednesday. After that, he hopes to throw his first bullpen session during the team's trip to San Diego this weekend. "I feel like I'm progressing, finally," he said. "It took awhile to get there, but I feel like we're moving forward." Webb is out because of a strained teres major muscle in his right shoulder and hasn't pitched since Opening Day. He will need to throw multiple bullpen sessions and almost certainly would need multiple minor-league rehab ..."
Webb expects to be back before break
"Rather than growing impatient with the seemingly slow progress of his recovery, Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb says his injury just takes time to recover. "You can't just start going into games right away," he said. "You've got to build your arm up." Webb, out because of a strained teres major muscle in the back of his right shoulder, played catch from 115 feet Tuesday, calling it his best throwing session yet, and said he expects to be back before the All-Star break. "Yeah, I would hope so," he said. Once he stretches back to 150 feet, Webb said he likely will throw a flat-ground session - which is like throwing a bullpen session, only not off a mound - and then move to the bullpen. He ..."
D-Backs need Webb, but won't rush return
"Of all the Diamondbacks' problems this season, one that probably doesn't get enough attention has been the shoulder injury that has sidelined Brandon Webb four innings into his Opening Day start. Since then, the team has trotted out three pitchers to try to replace their ace, and those starters are a combined 1-4 with three no-decisions in eight starts. The latest pitcher asked to fill Webb's shoes is Billy Buckner, who earned a win Friday night in Oakland after allowing just one run in 7 1/3 innings. He pitches next on Wednesday. "We have guys that are capable," manager A.J. Hinch said. "Buckner did fantastic in Oakland and we have other guys in the minors that can come up and help if ..."
D-Backs' Webb throws for 1st time on DL
"Brandon Webb still is weeks away from a return but the Diamondbacks ace took a step forward Friday afternoon. Webb, on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, played catch from about 60 feet for five minutes. "It feels different than it did last time, so that's good," he said. Webb, who has not pitched since Opening Day, was working his way back when he felt tightness in shoulder while playing catch April 24. He had not thrown since then."
Webb doesn't expect early return
"Ace Brandon Webb said over the weekend that he hoped to accelerate his timetable to return to the rotation, but he said Tuesday he doesn't expect that to happen. Webb is not expected to begin playing catch for another 10 days or so and even if all goes well he likely will not return to the rotation until at least the first week of June. The right-hander was feeling so good he was hoping to throw sooner. "We're probably going to end up riding it out and making sure that it's totally gone," he said. Webb said he spoke Monday with teammate Tom Gordon, who went through a similar shoulder problem in 2001. "He said he was doing what I am doing," Webb said. "He said that once it was gone and he ..."
Antsy Webb hopes to push up return timetable
"On Friday, Brandon Webb spent some spare time tossing a Frisbee-like Aerobie disc around the outfield before the game. Saturday's action was a game of hacky sack in front of the dugout. To say the least, his stay on the disabled list because of a bum shoulder hasn't exactly been action-packed. "It's boring," Webb said. "I'm ready to get out there. I miss the competing part of it." In the past week, he has spent time in the training room doing strengthening exercises, running and working to strengthen his legs, among other things. He said his shoulder is feeling so good that he hopes his timetable to start throwing can be moved up; the original schedule calls for him not to play catch for ..."
Webb shut down with recurrence of injury
"Brandon Webb isn't ready to be activated from the disabled list anytime soon. The Diamondbacks ace suffered a setback on Friday while warming up at Chase Field to throw a scheduled bullpen session before the team's game against the Giants. After the game, manager Bob Melvin announced Webb would be shut down for three weeks - the first of which he will do nothing but rest, and the second and third simply to work on strengthening his sore right shoulder. Webb played catch for a few minutes in right field then began complaining that the same stiffness that had sent him to the DL had returned and he was experiencing some discomfort. After some dialogue with Melvin, pitching coach Bryan Price ..."
Webb set to throw on Friday
"Brandon Webb, on the disabled list for only the second time in his career, is antsy to return to the Diamondbacks rotation. He's been on the DL since April 13 with tightness in his right (throwing) shoulder. "It's real tough," said Webb, who threw 33 pitches in the bullpen before Tuesday's game. "I'm used to going out there every five days and throwing, trying to help the team and now just sitting back on the sidelines and not be able to do anything really, it's tough. "So I'm definitely ready to get back out there and try to help the team." Webb is scheduled to throw again Friday, and he said he might be able to make it a longer session. There is no timetable for his return. Manager Bob ..."
Webb shows no effects of shoulder injury
"Brandon Webb threw on flat ground before Sunday's game and, according to manager Bob Melvin, appeared to show no effects of his shoulder injury. "He feels good," Melvin said. Webb was shelled for six runs in four innings on Opening Day against Colorado, then went on the disabled list with tightness in his right (pitching) shoulder on April 13. Webb will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, according to Melvin. Melvin didn't want to rule out a possible minor-league rehabilitation assignment for Webb but indicated that the pitcher might be fine facing hitters in a simulated game."
D-Backs place Webb on 15-day disabled list
"The Diamondbacks placed right-hander Brandon Webb on the disabled list Sunday because of what the ace called bursitis in his throwing shoulder. Webb, who felt stiffness in his shoulder during his Opening Day start last week, played catch Sunday morning and felt discomfort. "I felt like we were making some progress, but I want to make sure I'm 100 percent when I go back out there," Webb said. "You don't want to be ripping open a scab every time. You want to make sure that it's healed and feels 100 percent when I go back out there; that way I can maintain it the rest of the way out." The move was retroactive to April 7, and Webb could return April 22. He already has missed one start and ..."
D-Backs' Webb hopes to make next start
"Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb got some good news on Friday after undergoing an MRI on his right shoulder and he remains hopeful of rejoining the rotation for his next scheduled start on Friday in San Francisco. Manager Bob Melvin said the MRI indicated what Webb and the team believed all along: that his discomfort is muscular, not structural. Webb said the time he has spent with the training staff this week has helped, and he hopes to play catch today for the first time since Tuesday. "It's down in the meaty part of the back of the arm," he said. "When we get in there and do some therapy on it, it seems to loosen up and free me up, so that's encouraging." It's been a newsworthy week for ..."
Webb met with specialist in December
"Brandon Webb acknowledged on Thursday that a contract extension offer was pulled off the table last summer by the Diamondbacks because of concerns over his right shoulder, but Webb maintains his shoulder is fine and said he has the backing of a well-known specialist to prove it. For the first time, Webb revealed in an interview with MLB.com that he saw noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and that Andrews told him as long as he continues his strengthening program he was at no greater risk than any other pitcher of developing a shoulder problem. The examination took place in December after baseball's Winter Meetings. Webb's agents talked with D-backs officials at the meetings, and ..."
Report: Insurance concerns with Webb's arm halted negotiations
"The Diamondbacks pulled their offer of a three-year, $54 million contract extension to ace Brandon Webb last June after insurance companies expressed concerns about the right-hander's arm, according to a Foxsports.com report. Despite passing a physical at the time and being remarkably durable his first six seasons in the majors, Webb's contract was contingent on the team securing an insurance policy for the pitcher. But in using a higher standard when assessing potential risk, multiple agencies had concerns, which created a "red flag" for the Diamondbacks. Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes would neither confirm nor deny the report, telling The Arizona Republic Thursday, "When it ..."
Sources: Arm 'red flag' nixed Webb-'Zona deal
"Concerns raised by insurance companies over Brandon Webb's arm caused the Diamondbacks to withdraw their offer of a three-year, $54 million contract extension to the right-hander last June, according to major-league sources. Webb passed a team physical, sources say, but insurance companies use a higher standard when assessing risk. Multiple companies raised concerns, creating a "red flag" for the Diamondbacks, sources say. The contract was contingent on the club securing an appropriate insurance policy for the pitcher. The condition of Webb's arm became an issue on Wednesday when the Diamondbacks said that he would miss his next start due to shoulder stiffness. But Webb, who turns 30 on ..."
Webb will miss start vs. Dodgers
"Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb will miss his scheduled Saturday start against the Dodgers after arriving at the ballpark on Wednesday complaining of right shoulder stiffness. Manager Bob Melvin said it's early enough in the season to be proactive, sitting Webb down for a few days just to be safe. Webb, who received treatment Wednesday, probably won't play catch or throw a bullpen session until after the weekend. Webb said the shoulder began bothering him in the fourth inning of Monday's season-opening 9-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies, in which he was roughed up in the third inning. He played catch on Tuesday and told reporters his shoulder felt fine, but it apparently worsened ..."
Webb says stiffness in shoulder is no more
"For those worried about Brandon Webb and the shoulder stiffness he experienced before and during the fourth inning on Opening Day, the Diamondbacks ace eased those concerns Tuesday. "Nope," he said when asked if he felt any stiffness while playing catch before batting practice Tuesday. "It's great." And so Webb is in line to make his scheduled start Saturday against the Dodgers at Chase Field. Webb said his shoulder was a little tight as he was warming up Monday but that it felt good during the first three innings. His fastball in those innings reached his customary 87- to 89-mph range. But in the fourth, his velocity dropped to 83-85 mph, and Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta ..."
D-Backs' 'odd couple' hold key to success
"In some ways, they are an unusual match, Brandon Webb and Dan Haren, the Diamondbacks' Nos. 1 and 1A pitchers. Webb is the go-with-the-flow, easygoing country boy, someone who admitted last month it is often easier to agree with a reporter's incorrect question than it is to go to the trouble of fully explaining himself. Haren is the over-analyzer, the one whose mind constantly is at work. More than likely, he already has mapped out not only what teams he is scheduled pitch against this season but the opposing pitchers with whom he will match up. But the two became fast friends during their first season together, and each seems to rely on the other nearly as much as the Diamondbacks rely ..."
Cook vs. Webb Monday in Arizona
"Rockies (Aaron Cook, 16-9, 3.96 in 2008) vs. Diamondbacks (Brandon Webb, 22-7, 3.30 in 2008). Cook is 5-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 18 career appearances against Arizona, 14 starts. He was 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in three starts against Arizona last year, including 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two games at Arizona. Cook's headaches: Chris Snyder (.571) and Chad Tracy (.515). Cook's relief: Connor Jackson (0-for-12) and Justin Upon (.111). Webb is 11-7 with a 3.54 ERA in 25 career starts against the Rockies, 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA in four starts last year after going 2-4 in 10 starts two previous season. Eleven wins are second most for him against a team, two fewer than San Francisco. Webb's headaches: Brad ..."
Webb continues to work, 'getting close'
"Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb looked like he was in Opening Day form through three innings Saturday against the Kansas City Royals at Tucson Electric Park. The right-hander struck out three, giving up just two hits with no runs. But his pitch count started getting higher and his arm started dropping on delivery as he gave up five hits and four runs to the next eight batters. Though it was the ideal plan to get Webb five full innings, he was pulled with two men on and no outs in the fifth. So, no, he isn't regular-season ready just yet. "I'm getting close," Webb said. "I'm getting to 80 pitches and almost got into the fifth inning there. I feel like I'm getting close. Spring training is ..."
D-Backs' Webb upbeat after latest start
"The results weren't great, but Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was upbeat after his start on Sunday in which he allowed three runs in four innings. Webb cruised early on, but with two out in the third he gave up a single, walk and a three-run home run to Micah Hoffpauir. One positive Webb took from the game was the feel he had for his 'comeback' fastball. Webb likes to throw the pitch to left-handed hitters, starting it at their hands before it darts back over the inside corner."
Webb OK with spring results
"As a veteran of several spring trainings, Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Webb knows not to take his results too seriously. Last year only reinforced that belief. After posting a 7.90 ERA in Cactus League play, Webb started the 2008 season with wins in each of his first nine starts. "Last year was just terrible," he said. "You obviously don't want to walk a ton of guys or get knocked around a lot, but as long as you get your outs and you're making some good pitches, that's what you're trying to get out of these." With that in mind, Webb was rather upbeat after allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in three innings Tuesday afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback ..."
D-Backs' Webb struggles in debut
"Brandon Webb's first outing of spring training was rough, to say the least, but it wasn't all that bad in the big picture. That is to say, his arm felt fine. Webb gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings Wednesday evening against Team Mexico, but he said the forearm tightness that forced him to miss his first scheduled start was not an issue. "My arm felt really good," he said. The problem? His emotions. He said he had trouble controlling his adrenaline, which caused him to rush to the plate. That led to a lower-than-preferred arm angle. "You just get out of your rhythm and out of your comfort zone, trying to do too much really," he said. "That's probably ..."
Webb feels great; Byrnes not ready
"Two days after being scratched from what was supposed to be his Cactus League debut, ace Brandon Webb threw a bullpen session Sunday and said he "felt great." Webb, who missed Friday's start because of elbow stiffness, said he is set make his spring-training debut Wednesday against the Mexican national team. "I felt real good," he said after throwing about 30 pitches in the morning. "I felt great. Almost 100 percent, I'd say. I had no problems warming up. I threw every pitch, fastball, change-up, curveball." Webb, who isn't sure what caused the stiffness, said he felt a little relieved after his problem-free session. "I feel pretty good about it," he said. "It wasn't anything that was ..."
Webb scratched from scheduled start
"D-backs ace Brandon Webb was scratched from his Friday start with tightness in his right forearm. Webb said he felt the tightness on Thursday while playing catch. And after conferring with manager Bob Melvin, they decided it was best to push him back at least one day. Neither Webb or Melvin seemed overly concerned about the situation. Jon Garland, who was scheduled to follow Webb to the mound, will get the start in Webb's place. "I definitely don't think it's anything to worry about," Webb said. "There are no elbow issues or anything like that." Webb was scheduled to play catch on Friday and may pitch as soon as Saturday against the Rangers, or the club could decide to hold him out a ..."
Webb's K Foundation helps ill children
"Brandon Webb might be stingy when he is on the mound, but that surely isn't the case away from the baseball field. One of the first things the Diamondbacks star pitcher did once he established himself as a bona fide major-leaguer was create Brandon Webb's K Foundation. The K Foundation's mission is to improve the lives of critically ill children throughout Arizona by providing daily support and life-changing experiences. Since its 2004 inception, the K Foundation has raised nearly $350,000, which has been used to fund programs assisting more than 150,000 critically and chronically ill children."
B. Webb's charity fishes for funds
"He left his home state of Kentucky but forgot his passport, and then his flight to Phoenix was delayed by snow and he almost missed his connecting flight here. Once he arrived, Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was berated by baseball legend Wade Boggs. By bullhorn, no less. The trip might not have started the way Webb wanted, but it surely ended the way he and his K Foundation had envisioned. The occasion was Webb's signature charity event - Brandon Webb's 2nd Annual Celebrity Offshore Fishing Tournament, held last month in Cabo at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Holistic Retreat resort. "Charity golf tournaments are a dime a dozen," Webb said. "The members of my foundation came to me with this ..."
Webb to skip World Baseball Classic
"Brandon Webb opted not to participate in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 and the Diamondbacks right-hander plans to skip next year's as well. Webb sent word through his agent, Jonathan Maurer, that he wants to focus on the regular season. "While I am excited for Team USA and the World Baseball Classic," the statement read, "I am not going to participate in 2009 as I want to fully prepare for the 2009 Major League season and hopefully bring the playoffs back to Arizona." Teammate Dan Haren also is leaning toward not participating if he is asked"
Who's the Cy guy?
"When Tim Lincecum prematurely left Tuesday's game, the prevailing feeling was he coughed up the Cy Young Award. He was destined for a second straight loss and seemingly crushed by a heavy workload. The jump-to-conclusion sentiment was that Brandon Webb had it wrapped up based on his league lead in wins and contributions in a pennant race. But since then, the Diamondbacks flamed out and lost the division title to the Dodgers, and suddenly it became difficult to overlook what Webb did in three key starts from Aug. 26 to Sept. 6 - all one-sided losses, including two to the Dodgers, with his ERA ballooning from 2.74 to 3.41. The Diamondbacks fell from three games ahead of the Dodgers to a ..."
Webb misses win, but team doesn’t
"Brandon Webb figures he has done what he can do. Now, it is time for Tim Lincecum to make his last start, and for Brad Lidge to likely rest on his perfect season in relief, and let the electorate have their voice in the NL Cy Young Award race. “I feel good where I am at,” Webb said after his final start of the season Saturday. “I feel pretty confident.” Webb gave up four runs in seven innings but did not get a decision in the D-Backs’ 6-4 victory over Colorado, a game not determined until Stephen Drew broke a tie with a two-run single in the last of the eighth inning. Webb still leads the NL and is tied for the major league lead with a career-high 22 victories, although his ERA rose to ..."
Webb deserves Cy Young
"Sue me. Tag me old school. Revoke my membership to the Secret Society of Sabermetricians if you must, but don't tell me Brandon Webb isn't Cy Young worthy. Don't call me Homer unless it's a nod to a certain Greek poet. Watching Webb face the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night made me wonder if this current trend of devaluing a pitcher's win total could erroneously put the ace's chance for the award in jeopardy. Numbers shmumbers. Twenty-two victories is a perfect reason Webb should win his second Cy Young in the past three years. While others will argue for San Francisco's Tim Lincecum's superior ERA (2.66 vs. 3.30) and strikeout total (252 vs. 183), Webb's ability to gauge his team's ..."
Webb denied in D-Backs' win
"Brandon Webb didn't win Saturday night, but he didn't lose, either, and he seemingly came away from his final start of the season - his final chance to stump for the National League Cy Young - in no better or worse shape for the award than he was when the day began. That the Cy Young picture remains unchanged for Webb is due in part to some help from his teammates, who staged an eighth-inning rally to take him off the hook for the loss and lift the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. And on the same day Webb gave up four runs in seven innings, coming up short in an attempt to build on his National League-leading victory total of 22, another candidate for the ..."
Wins power Webb's Cy Young bid
"Break down the numbers in the race for the National League Cy Young Award and you might find starting pitchers who have been more overpowering and relievers who have been more flawless. But no one has been more prolific in the win column than has Brandon Webb, and with history as your barometer, his 22 (or perhaps 23) victories might be enough for the Diamondbacks right-hander to claim the second Cy Young of his career. Wins always have held a certain allure to the baseball writers, who vote on the sport's major awards, and an unusually large number in the category can sometimes make up for other deficiencies. San Francisco's Tim Lincecum has a lower ERA and more strikeouts, and ..."
Webb's been great, but Lincecum deserves the Cy Young
"One of the perks of being a sportswriter is being able to vote for baseball's postseason awards. This year, I have a National League Most Valuable Player ballot, which I turned in Monday. I'd like to tell you who I voted for, but I'm sworn to secrecy until the award is announced in November. I will say this: It wasn't a difficult decision. A certain player who shall remain nameless was, in my mind, the clear-cut winner. That's hardly the case in the NL Cy Young Award race. Strong arguments can be made for Arizona's Brandon Webb and San Francisco's Tim Lincecum. (Everyone else, including Milwaukee's CC Sabathia, is fighting for third.) Let's start with Webb. The Diamondbacks ace is having ..."
Webb tosses another gem
"One of the glaring defects the Cardinals hope to fix this winter is one of the most galling culprits in their season coming undone this fall. Look no further than Todd Wellemeyer's final few starts.
