Brandon Webb News & Rumors

Brandon Webb had rotator cuff repair surgery, will begin rehab in six weeks
"RHP Brandon Webb, who never pitched for the Rangers after signing last winter, underwent rotator cuff repair surgery on Wednesday. It was performed by Rangers orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister. There were no further details released about the condition of his shoulder. Webb signed a $3 million contract last winter that could have been worth up to $10 million, based on how much he pitched. Webb had surgery in 2009 after suffering an injury on Opening Day. He has not appeared in the majors since then."
Shoulder problems end Webb's season
"It appears the closest Brandon Webb will get to pitching in Arlington this year was a May 30 rehab start in Frisco. The right-hander got the results of his MRI Wednesday and it looks like his season with Texas has ended before it began. The test on the right shoulder showed changes to Webb's rotator cuff. The Rangers do not expect Webb to be able to pitch again this season. "It's disappointing from the standpoint that when we signed him we knew this was a risk-reward type deal," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "We knew that he had some shoulder history, but thought he was at a point where he could kind of push through it and get over the hump. Unfortunately, really through no"
Brandon Webb's MRI results make pitching for Rangers unlikely
"Right-hander Brandon Webb's season effectively ended Wednesday without him throwing a pitch for the Rangers. An MRI on Webb's right shoulder revealed new damage to his rotator cuff, on which he had a surgical procedure in 2009. Webb is considering either a second surgery or the possibility of a more conservative approach. The Rangers do not expect him to pitch this year. The Rangers gave Webb a $3 million contract this off-season, betting that he'd return to the form that made him one of the National League's most dominant starters from 2006 to 2008. He hurt the shoulder on opening day in 2009 and hasn't pitched in the majors since."
Brandon Webb's MRI results make pitching for Rangers unlikely
"Right-handed pitcher Brandon Webb's MRI on Tuesday revealed some further damage to his rotator cuff. Webb is weighing his options, which include undergoing surgery for the second time in three years. He is not expected to pitch for the Rangers, who acquired him as a free agent this spring. He hasn't pitched since 2009."
Rangers' plan for pitcher Brandon Webb hinges on his health report
"The Rangers await a medical report before deciding the plan for veteran right-hander Brandon Webb. A scheduled injury-rehabilitation start with Triple-A Round Rock on Friday night was scrubbed when Webb experienced shoulder discomfort while warming up in the bullpen. Daniels indicated the club is willing to stay with Webb as long as he is willing to pursue the goal of pitching in the majors for the first time since opening day 2009 while with Arizona. "Brandon's frustrated because this hasn't gone the way any of us anticipated," Daniels said. "We have to wait for the medical report to see what our next step will be." Webb has made four injury-rehab starts with Double-A Frisco, going 0-2"
Brandon Webb discouraged after latest setback
"Right-hander Brandon Webb said he hopes to know more this evening about his sore right shoulder after being examined by Dr. Keith Meister following yet another setback. Webb was scheduled to start for Triple A Round Rock on Friday but was scratched after 25 warmup pitches. He said the effects of a recent cortisone shot have worn off, and he didn't feel he could have gotten outs. "It hurts, so I shut it down," he said. "It take all my velocity away, all my life when it feels like that.""
Rangers' Webb has tough rehab start in Frisco
"The numbers alone for Brandon Webb from his Sunday rehab start look discouraging. Webb, who didn't last an inning in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco, isn't letting the outing get him down. "I felt pretty good," Webb said. "I don't think there was a hard-hit ball. I think I gave up six hits, and four of them were ground balls through the hole. There was a little blooper behind second base. Nothing was at them. I don't know that I made my best pitches, but nothing was hit at anybody.""
Are Brandon Webb's struggles not as bad as they sound?
"Though right-hander Brandon Webb didn't last a full inning for Frisco in his start Sunday, reports suggest his outing wasn't nearly as ugly as his line. Webb was charged with six hits and four runs in a 36-pitch inning, two-out start, but club officials said reports suggested he had solid movement on his pitches and touched 87 mph on the radar gun. The majority of his fastballs were in the 82- to 86-mph range, but they did have more life than in previous outings. Nonetheless, Webb's return to the majors remains an uncertainty. In the same game, right-hander Tanner Scheppers struck out four in two perfect innings in his first game of the season. Scheppers, who entered the spring as a"
Report on Brandon Webb's last rehab outing encouraging
"Pitching coach Mike Maddux said he received encouraging reports about Brandon Webb's three shutout innings for Double-A Frisco on Tuesday, even though his fastball velocity was 83-85 mph. "He's always been a movement guy, and he had good movement," Maddux said. "As long as we've got movement, we can compete. And having some success is going to be huge. I'm not sure what comes first, confidence or success, but having some success can't hurt your confidence." Webb is scheduled to pitch again for Frisco on Sunday at Corpus Christi."
Shoulder inflammation another setback for Brandon Webb
"Right-hander Brandon Webb's rehab assignment has been stopped because of shoulder inflammation after his first outing in more than two years earlier in the week. Webb allowed eight hits and five runs in 31/3 innings for Frisco on Monday while averaging about 84 mph with his fastball. He said after the game he felt good but complained of soreness during a between-starts bullpen session. He was given an anti-inflammatory injection and will need to be down for a week before the Rangers can begin another rehab assignment. In either case, it doesn't appear that Webb will be an option for the Rangers before the All-Star break — at the earliest."
Brandon Webb throws three innings in first rehab start since 2009
"The lineup of Tim Wheeler, James Cesario and Ben Paulsen isn't exactly the kind Brandon Webb faced on his way to winning Cy Young Award for Arizona in 2006. But for the Texas right-hander, Monday's Double A start against Tulsa is a sign of progress. Webb made his first professional start since Opening Day of 2009, allowing five runs on eight hits in 31/3 innings for Frisco. More important than the ugly linescore was the fact that Webb, who is trying to come back from shoulder surgery, came through the outing healthy. "It was fun," Webb said. "It was different than Arizona [extended spring games]. I felt OK, which was the main thing. Basically the pitches they hit were up. I got out there"
Rangers' Webb expects to be nervous in Frisco start
"It may seem unusual for a Cy Young Award winner to get butterflies heading into a start against Double A competition. But that's exactly what Brandon Webb expects to feel heading into his medical rehabilitation start with Frisco today. Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner who hasn't pitched in two years because of shoulder surgery, will throw between 60-75 pitches against Tulsa at 4 p.m. in Frisco. He pitched six innings Tuesday in extended spring training. "I'm going to be nervous for sure," Webb said. "Even out in Arizona I was a little nervous. I haven't been out there in so long against competition it was like, 'What is going to happen?'" His velocity is down 4 mph from"
Brandon Webb, Julio Borbon taking steps to return to Rangers
"The rehabilitation of Rangers right-hander Brandon Webb enters a new and more challenging phase Monday. Webb will begin a 30-day injury-rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Frisco by starting against Tulsa, of the Colorado organization, in a 4:05 p.m. game at Dr Pepper Ballpark. It will be Webb's first true game appearance since April 6, 2009, when he worked four innings in an opening day start for Arizona. In August 2009, Webb underwent surgery to remove debris and inflamed tissue from his right shoulder. Since then, he has faced hitters only in controlled situations such as batting practice and extended spring training games."
Chavez in center for Rangers as Borbon goes to DL; Webb moved to 60-day DL
"An MRI exam Saturday revealed inflammation, but no tearing, in Julio Borbon's left hamstring. He was placed on the 15-day DL in what could be described as a best-case scenario for the Rangers. To replace Borbon, the Rangers purchased the contract of OF Endy Chavez, who is playing center field and leading off today. Chavez, 33, has spent the entire season with Round Rock, batting .305 (39-128) with 8 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, and 17 RBI in 30 games for the Express. To make room for Chavez on the 40-man roster, the Rangers had to move RHP Brandon Webb from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. The move is retroactive to the start of the season, meaning Webb is eligible May 30. He has not had a"
Brandon Webb continues to progress
"Brandon Webb needs to pass a session of live batting practice later this week before he will get his first game action, which would be the first step toward joining the Texas Rangers' pitching staff. The right-hander threw 72 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday at Yankee Stadium and said he was as sharp toward the end of it as he was during a breakthrough bullpen session Tuesday in Detroit. He will face batters Friday for the first time since April 4, when he hit three batters during live BP and was reined in to throwing only in the bullpen. Based on Sunday, though, he can see light at the end of the tunnel. "It took me a little while at first to get my location, but at the end it was as"
Webb hits three in batting practice
"Brandon's Webb first opportunity to face live hitters since March 21 didn't go well Monday. The Texas right-hander threw his first living batting practice since rain cut short a session in Surprise, Ariz. He hit three batters and struggled with his location throughout the session Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. "It went bad," Webb said. "I was pretty wild. I'll have to go about it again. "I thought I might be ready to get into a game, but after today, there's no way I'm ready to get in a game after that." The good news for Webb is that he had no problems with his right shoulder and threw around 70 pitches. He's hoping to face hitters again Friday in Baltimore, but a timetable for"
Rangers' Brandon Webb could throw off mound on Sunday or Monday
"Right-hander Brandon Webb could be throwing off a mound Sunday or Monday after playing long-toss for 22 minutes without any complications from the shoulder soreness he felt Wednesday. Pitching coach Mike Maddux said Webb was stretched out to 200 feet and started seeing positive results around the halfway point in the session. The next step for Webb is to play long-toss again today, similar to the throwing program he was put on earlier in camp. "About 15 minutes into it, he got it stretched out and was able to get the hump out of it," Maddux said. "We were happy with it.""
Brandon Webb may be getting close to pitching in minor league game
"Right-hander Brandon Webb is scheduled to throw his fourth session of live batting practice Wednesday and could graduate to a minor-league game this weekend if he gets through the day without any issues. "We're still one at a time," pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "If all goes well tomorrow, why not?" Webb won't be ready for the start of the regular season and will likely head to the disabled list shortly before to Opening Day."
Payoff on Webb bet may be huge for Rangers
"Instead of the boxscore, let's go today to the dictionary. "Ace in the hole -- a device or resource that an opponent is unaware of that can be used to your advantage when the opportunity is right." A crowd of 10,464 gathered to watch the reigning American League champions play Saturday afternoon. A few hundred feet away, meanwhile, the Texas Rangers' ace in the hole had pitched Friday in front of a crowd numbering in the dozens. Brandon Webb feels fine. His right shoulder, he says, is fine. His arm strength and his old instincts are coming back. His sinker is sinking. His fastball, never one to turn heads, gets better with each throwing session. But the time isn't quite right, and Webb"
Rangers' Webb says that it's time for him to pitch in a simulated game or against minor-leaguers
"Brandon Webb says that it's time for him to pitch in a simulated game or against minor-leaguers after continuing to see improvement during a third session of live batting practice. The right-hander threw 62 pitches and was pleased with the movement on his sinker and his command, even though he plunked Esteban German and Jose Felix. Any lingering issues, he said, can be worked out in a game situation. He's been able to gain more of a feel for his pitches and mechanics, and is able to identify problems on the mound. "That's good that he thinks that," manager Ron Washington said. "That means he feels he progressing the way he feels he should. That's something we'll discuss.""
Webb eager to take next step toward return
"Rangers right-hander Brandon Webb threw 62 pitches in a live batting practice session on Thursday and is hoping to graduate to either a simulated or B game soon. "I'd like to have a 15-pitch inning, sit down and then throw 15 more," Webb said. "A game situation would be different. This is fun, throwing live batting practice. I haven't been able to do that for a long time. But hopefully I can get in a game soon." Webb said he felt great. He said his timing is off -- he was rushing his pitches -- and that created some control issues when he plunked a couple of his right-handed-hitting teammates. That can be smoothed out with more time on the mound and he believes his velocity will come"
Brandon Webb progresses, acknowledges he won't open season with Rangers
"Right-hander Brandon Webb threw another 60-pitch session of "live" batting practice Sunday morning against minor leaguers and said he was "surprisingly happy" with it. That said, Webb also acknowledged he would not open the season on the Rangers' roster. He said the club has plans for him to break camp with the team and continue throwing sessions and simulated games with Mike Maddux early in the season in between rehab starts for either Double-A Frisco or Triple-A Round Rock. It sounds like late April or early May remains the most logical target. Webb said he had a little trouble getting loose during his bullpen and long-toss sessions that preceded the BP session, but that when he got on"

Brandon Webb on his session: 'It wasn't the best; it wasn't the worst'
"Right-hander Brandon Webb didn't give a ringing endorsement of his first session against hitters, but didn't think it was awful, either. "It went pretty much as planned," Webb said Wednesday afternoon of the 62-pitch, 14-minute session of live batting practice. "It wasn't the best I've ever thrown. It wasn't the worst." Webb was unhappiest with his curveball, which he felt he constantly broke off too early and threw in the dirt when he was trying to throw them for strikes."
Brandon Webb: No hard feelings toward Arizona Diamondbacks
"In the visitors' clubhouse at Salt River Fields, Brandon Webb peeled off his Texas Rangers jersey on Saturday and held it up. "This look weird or what?" he asked. The former Diamondbacks right-hander made his first visit to his former team's new spring-training digs, then took a few minutes to talk with Diamondbacks reporters for the first time since he signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Rangers. Webb, who ranks behind only Randy Johnson on the list of best pitchers in Diamondbacks history, was asked if he could see the writing on the wall about whether the organization was looking to bring him back for another year. "I didn't know," he said. "I thought they might at least"
Rangers pitcher Brandon Webb improving
"Brandon Webb has transitioned from a pitcher worried about the health of his arm to a pitcher attempting to iron out his mechanics and sharpen his stuff for the upcoming season. He threw 54 pitches Thursday in his third bullpen session of the week. He'll be back on the mound Sunday after a light day of long toss today and a heavy day Saturday."
Brandon Webb throws another bullpen session, still strengthening arm
"After watching Brandon Webb throw in the bullpen for about 15 minutes on Tuesday, Rangers manager Ron Washington came away impressed. And also realistic. Webb is not ready to pitch in a game. "He had good action down in the strike zone," Washington said. "But he's still building up arm strength. It was good, but he's still not ready.""

Brandon Webb has encouraging session on mound, but Opening Day seems unlikely
"After getting Brandon Webb on a mound for the first time since the opening day of camp, the Rangers feel it's not a matter of if he'll be ready to pitch, but when. The likelihood, however, remains that when won't come until sometime after the season begins. After a handful of arm-strengthening "long-toss" sessions, Webb got back up on the mound Sunday morning. He threw approximately 28 pitches, including several changeups. While his location was rusty, he said he noticed significant change in his arm strength from any point since he had shoulder surgery 18 months ago. "I haven't had many sessions like this," Webb said. "It was a good day. There were no issues, except the location. I just"
Brandon Webb feels fine, throws long toss
"Rangers pitcher Brandon Webb went out early on Monday and had a long toss session under the watchful eye of pitching coach Mike Maddux. The Rangers don't want Webb getting back on a mound until they feel like he has fully built up his arm strength, so he'll continue to long toss at this point. Webb stressed on Monday that he feels fine physically."
Brandon Webb might not be ready for start of season
"The Brandon Webb Express back to the majors is slowing down on a daily basis. Webb insisted before spring that he was cleared to be on the same pitching schedule as others. Earlier in the week, pitching coach Mike Maddux said Webb would throw off a mound every third day, rather than every other day, as a precaution. On Sunday, though, the "third day," he did not throw. And he won't for the foreseeable future. "We're not going to get on the mound until we've built up the arm strength to the point where it needs to be," Maddux said. "Is that three days from now? Five days from now? Seven days? I don't know. It's a variable schedule we are working with." Maddux didn't rule out the possibility"
If he runs stop sign, Brandon Webb could be Rangers' ticket
"The only sign Brandon Webb had seen since April 2009 was shiny, red and eight-sided. His promising career had been stopped by a shoulder injury. Surgery was performed in August 2009 and a rehab rush job ensued over the next six months. A series of setbacks, starting in spring training 2010, caused a halt for the second consecutive season. Even when the stop sign was removed, Webb wasn't seeing any signs that he was close to a return. Then, his arm started to respond to rest the way it should. After his second off-season bullpen session, he saw the light. And today, as Texas Rangers pitchers and catchers go through their first official workout of spring training, the staff newcomer and"
A healthy 2011 could net new Ranger Brandon Webb an extra $8 million
"Brandon Webb sure has a lot of reasons to stay healthy and keep pitching for the Texas Rangers next year. MLB.com recently released an article breaking down Webb's one-year contract with the Rangers and one thing is evident: the Rangers are making Webb earn his salary by staying on the mound. Webb's base salary begins at $3 million. However, if the injury prone pitcher can make it to 100 innings pitched, he gets a bonus of $150,000. If he can last an additional 30 innings and make the total 130 innings pitched, then his bonus jumps up to a total of $725,000. Once Webb makes it to 175 innings pitch, his bonus total nearly increases by three times to $2 million. From there, he earns an"
Rangers sign Brandon Webb, Arthur Rhodes
"Former NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes are now part of the Texas Rangers pitching staff. The AL champions, who lost former Cy Young winner Cliff Lee in free agency, confirmed the signings of the two pitchers Monday and planned to introduce them during a news conference later in the day. Webb and Rhodes agreed to contracts last month but had to pass physicals to complete the deals. Webb, the 2006 Cy Young winner with Arizona, hasn't pitched since the 2009 season opener because of shoulder surgery. Rhodes, the 41-year-old reliever is coming off one of his best seasons in his 20-year major league career. Webb is getting a one-year deal from the"
When it comes to new Ranger Brandon Webb, expect little (or nothing)
"In their third try at rescuing the wrecked career of an injured free-agent starting pitcher, the Rangers may have figured out how to produce a performance that exceeds their expectations. It goes like this: Expect nothing. And with that we present the Rangers' newest starter: Brandon Webb, whose signing was formally announced Monday after a week in which it was the second-worst kept sports secret in Arlington. This is not to say the signing of Webb, who will turn 32 in May, was a waste of $3 million. On the contrary, this could be as brilliant a deal as last winter's signings of Colby Lewis and Vladimir Guerrero. There is only one caveat: The Rangers must enter this marriage expecting"
Webb, Rhodes join Texas Rangers' pitching staff
"The right shoulder of Brandon Webb is right where it should be, judging by the normal timetable for pitchers who have had the type of operation he underwent in August 2009. That timetable doesn't have an end date set in stone. It could be spring training. It could be Opening Day. It could be sometime in April or early May. But the 2006 National League Cy Young winner and the award's runner-up the next two years said he plans to be a full-go when pitchers and catchers have their first spring workout Feb. 17, and he is hopeful that he will be in the Texas Rangers' rotation on Opening Day. Webb and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes were introduced Monday as the newest members of the reigning"
Webb's deal with Texas Rangers loaded with incentives
"Brandon Webb will receive a base salary of $3 million and could earn more than twice that if he meets a lucrative load of contract incentives while pitching for the Texas Rangers in 2011.A baseball source confirmed the 2011 terms that were agreed to Monday between the former National League Cy Young winner and the reigning American League champions.General manger Jon Daniels did not comment.Webb, a right-hander, will take a physical this week.Webb missed all but four innings of the past two seasons after injuring his shoulder on Opening Day 2009. He underwent surgery later that year, and didn't return until a few months ago in the instructional league."
Brandon Webb's one-year deal with Rangers is full of incentives
"Brandon Webb will receive a base salary of $3 million and could earn more than twice that if he meets contract incentives while pitching for the Rangers in 2011. A baseball source confirmed the 2011 terms that were agreed to Monday between the former National League Cy Young winner and the reigning American League champions. General manger Jon Daniels did not comment on the possible deal. Webb, a right-hander, will take a physical this week. He missed all but four innings of the past two seasons after injuring his shoulder in opening day 2009. Brandon Webb reportedly joining Texas Rangers
"Right-hander Brandon Webb's days with the Diamondbacks appeared to come to an end Sunday as multiple reports indicated that he had agreed to a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Texas Rangers. Webb anchored the Diamondbacks rotation for parts of six seasons, winning a Cy Young in 2006 and finishing runner-up for the award the next two seasons. He was a key piece to the 2007 team that advanced the National League Championship Series. But he has missed all but one game in the past two seasons due to a shoulder injury that required surgery in 2009. He tried to work his way back this past season but was never able to build the requisite arm strength to compel the Diamondbacks to start"
Rangers agree to add Cy Young-winner Brandon Webb
"The Rangers' search for additional help for the starting rotation might have come to an end. According to a source, the team has reached a one-year deal with free-agent right-hander Brandon Webb . Neither general manager Jon Daniels nor manager Ron Washington was available for comment. A deal with Webb, which is pending a physical that likely will come early this week, is full of potential and risk. He's four years removed from winning the National League Cy Young Award and he was one of the top starters in the NL for a four-year period with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The risk comes because of Webb's shoulder. He hasn't pitched in a big league game since opening day of 2009. Webb had"
Brewers not in on Webb
"General manager Doug Melvin tells me the Brewers aren't the "mystery" team involved in the bidding on free-agent right-hander Brandon Webb. Webb is attempting a comeback after missing two seasons with shoulder woes and several teams have shown interest in the former Arizona ace. Texas and Washington reportedly are in the hunt and the Cubs supposedly were in the mix as well but might have backed off. There was as report Tuesday of a "mystery" NL Central club involved and I doubted it was the Brewers after they acquired Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke this winter. Melvin confirmed to me that he is not in the hunt for Webb."
Rangers showing interest in Brandon Webb
"The Texas Rangers might have a former Cy Young Award winner pitching for them in 2011 after all. Right-hander Brandon Webb, who hasn't pitched since April 2009 because of shoulder problems, was scheduled to talk on the phone with both manager Ron Washington and pitching coach Mike Maddux on Tuesday afternoon, according to sources. Neither Washington nor Maddux was available for comment Tuesday. General manager Jon Daniels also declined to talk about Webb, instead saying that the club has talked to a lot of people. A sticking point in signing Webb, who has also been linked to the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals, could be a contract. Webb wants a one-year deal with a low base but with"

Rangers' interest in Brandon Webb intensifies
"The Texas Rangers and former National League Cy Young winner Brandon Webb continue to work toward a contract for next season, and sources said that there are plans for him to speak later today on the phone with manager Ron Washington and pitching coach Mike Maddux. Webb, a right-hander, is seeking a one-year deal low in guaranteed money but loaded with incentives, according to a source. The Rangers typically like to have an option year included with deal for high-risk players, but Webb's agent, Jonathan Maurer, has told teams that Webb wants only one year. The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs are also believed to be interested, but a source said that Webb wants to play for the"
Cubs, Rangers, Nationals showing interest in Webb
"Free agent starter Brandon Webb is drawing interest from the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals, multiple major-league sources said today. Webb, 31, isn't expected to decide on a team today, one source told FOXSports.com."
Webb not in Texas...Washington has not met with him
"Rangers manager Ron Washington said rumors that Brandon Webb is in Texas are not true. Washington is in New Orleans and has not met with Webb. The Rangers are "very much in the mix" according to one source but this is not as far along as people are saying it is."
Nats in mix for Pavano, maybe not for Webb
"The Cubs and Rangers have jumped ahead of the Nationals in the Brandon Webb sweepstakes, according to a source. No reason was given as to why the Nats fell behind in the race. Washington was thought to be the front-runners in acquiring Webb's services because of his previous relationship with general manager Mike Rizzo and Phil Rizzo, the senior advisor to the GM. All three worked together with the D-backs as recently as 2006. However, the source believes the Nationals are concentrating more on acquiring a first baseman to replace Adam Dunn, who signed with the White Sox earlier this month."
Nationals looking at Brandon Webb, Derrek Lee, Carl Pavano
"Brandon Webb "remains excited" about the Nationals, according to a baseball source. The Webb camp had talks with the Nationals during the Winter Meetings. If the Nationals sign Webb, it most likely will be an incentive-laden deal because Webb has not pitched in almost two years because of right shoulder problems. After having surgery last August, Webb was able to throw in the instructional league in late September and October without any problems. It's not a secret that Webb has a close relationship with Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, who drafted Webb in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft when Rizzo was director of scouting with the D-backs, and Phil Rizzo, the senior adviser to the"
Rehabbing Webb could be Cubs' next addition
"The Cubs leave the winter meetings on Thursday having accomplished their primary objective of finding a first baseman, and now have turned their focus to pitching. Brandon Webb remains their No. 1 target, and the Cubs reportedly are one of the top two or three teams on the former Diamondbacks ace's list. But the Cubs still have to check out his medical records after Webb missed all but one start the last two seasons. He's coming off shoulder surgery, but may be ready to pitch this spring. General manager Jim Hendry also met with Tampa Bay officials Wednesday night, leading to speculation that starter Matt Garza is on their radar. But a deal is unlikely and Rays executives were amused by"
Free agent Webb likes Pirates, but can they hook up?
"Brandon Webb, a one-time Cy Young Award winner in Arizona, would welcome a chance to come back from shoulder surgery in Pittsburgh, his agent said Tuesday. The Pirates are one of roughly a half-dozen suitors through free agency. "The Pirates are an organization that Brandon and I have a lot of respect for, especially for the GM," agent Jonathan Maurer said, referring to general manager Neal Huntington. "But they're also one of a number of teams that are interested." Webb, 31, was the Cy Young winner in 2006 and a National League All-Star in 2006-08, posting ERAs of 3.10, 3.01 and 3.30 in that span. But his right shoulder was injured on opening day in 2009, and he had surgery Aug. 3 of that"
