Bob Sanders News & Rumors

Sanders experiment is finished
"Bob Sanders did not believe he could be the Bob Sanders he expects to be, no matter how long the Chargers gave him to rest, and so his time in San Diego is finished. The team placed him on injured reserve Wednesday, after he'd played just two games as a Charger. The Chargers had signed the former All-Pro in the hopes they could keep him whole, or at least patched together, for the 2011 season. But the same knee that has bothered him for five years and has been through three surgeries would not allow him to continue being the player he wanted to be or that the Chargers needed."

But the same knee that has bothered him for five years and has been through three surgeries would not allow him to continue being the player he wanted to be or that the Chargers needed."
Chargers' plan for fully healthy Sanders to be a hit
"Sure, a lot of other things have to happen for the Chargers to finally be the team they've thought they were. But the No.1 priority – if there can ever be such a thing truly defined for a football team – is to keep Bob Sanders healthy. "No offense," said one member of the Chargers front office, "but I don't think that makes you a genius to have figured that out." Sometimes, obvious is a synonym for paramount. Given Sanders' history – as both one of the most feared defenders in the league and, more recently, as a guy who couldn't stay on the field due to various injuries -- Sanders' longevity will be the concern with every thud he creates with those body-rattling hits he launches himself"
Sanders' banner years coming to a close
"When former Colts safety Bob Sanders returns to the NFL, it will be in a San Diego Chargers uniform. But a massive image of the two-time Pro Bowler still hangs on the outside of Lucas Oil Stadium -- for now, anyway. Eventually, the 30-by-60-foot stadium banner will be torn down and replaced by another key player, joining quarterback Peyton Manning, defensive end Dwight Freeney, tight end Dallas Clark and wide receiver Reggie Wayne on the Downtown home of the Colts. It's unclear, however, when that will happen or who the new player will be, said Colts Chief Operating Officer Pete Ward. "It's a team decision. There are no rules, no timetable to it. In the past, we've selected players who we"
Sanders to sign with Chargers
"Bob Sanders' return to the NFL will be with the San Diego Chargers. The former Indianapolis Colts veteran safety agreed to a one-year contract with the Chargers on Thursday night. The team announced the transaction on its website. Financial terms were not released. "We are all very excited to add Bob Sanders to our defense," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a news release. "We have always held him in high regard. He's a smart, physical, instinctive player. His intensity and playmaking ability can make an immediate impact on our defense." Sanders visited Buffalo, Jacksonville and the New York Jets before settling on the Chargers. Sanders, the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the"
Safety Bob Sanders passes Jaguars' physical
"Bob Sanders passed his physical with the Jaguars, and coach Jack Del Rio liked what he saw during the Indianapolis Colts safety's visit to Jacksonville on Monday. "I loved the time that we had with him," Del Rio said. "We're exploring, I know he's exploring, whether or not Jacksonville will be a fit for him. That's the question. How much does he have left? He was very eager to continue his career, thinks he has a couple good years left in him. Certainly when he's on the field, he's one of the more dynamic players in the league." Sanders, 30, the 2007 defensive player of the year, went to Jacksonville for medical exams. He also visited Buffalo, then halted visits for the combine. Sanders"
Former All-Pro safety Bob Sanders visits with Jaguars
"Free agency won't begin in earnest for at least a couple more weeks — possibly longer if there is a lockout — but it's already started for the Jaguars. On Monday, Jacksonville hosted former Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders in the first stop on his free agency tour. Sanders spent the day in Jacksonville. He had a medical exam during his visit, according to a source. According to another source, Sanders is scheduled to visit Buffalo today for his last visit before the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The Colts cut the 2007 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year on Friday. Upon his release, Sanders immediately became a free agent and has until March 3 to land somewhere. After that, if"
Damaged safety Bob Sanders not a good fit for Jaguars
"Whenever the NFL free agency period begins, there's going to be an assortment of temptations for the Jaguars, because they'll feel compelled to spend money on some glaring holes at linebacker and in the secondary. One of general manager Gene Smith's favorite sayings is "the best ability is availability," which is why the Jaguars shouldn't even bother to kick the tires on Bob Sanders, the supremely talented safety released Friday by the Indianapolis Colts. Is there any player in the entire league who fits the term "damaged goods" more than broken-down Bob? The two-time Pro Bowl safety is fabulous when healthy, but he's missed 39 of 48 games the past three seasons with various injuries and"
Sanders still on side of Lucas Oil Stadium
"Bob Sanders no longer is on the Indianapolis Colts roster, but it might be awhile before he leaves the building. Lucas Oil Stadium, that is. Sanders, released by the team Friday, is one of five players featured on large posters on the stadium's exterior. Now that he's no longer a Colt, it's only appropriate to take down the approximately 35-by-60 foot picture. "We haven't really thought about that yet," Colts chief operating officer Pete Ward said. It's not a simple task. A lift capable of reaching the poster must be rented, at a time when no events are planned and the weather is cooperative."
Why Bob Sanders can still provide value
"A couple of notes on the Colts releasing safety Bob Sanders today… - The first thing we discuss with Sanders is his health. I understand that. He played only 9 games over the past three seasons. That eventually will get you cut. But, playing in the box as a strong safety (especially in the 8-man fronts of the Tampa 2 playbook) is hell on your body. Take on pulling guards, kick out blocks from the fullback and spend a lot of time absorbing hits. That adds up-just as it did for safety Mike Brown in Chicago in the exact same defensive scheme. That is the No.1 concern with Sanders moving forward. - His current value? I think we are going to see some strong interest in Sanders once we get a new"
Colts cut injury-prone Sanders
"As a friend and now former teammate of Bob Sanders, Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday provided stark reality to the team's decision to sever ties with their oft-injured veteran safety. "It was just time," Saturday said during a Friday appearance on the Colin Cowherd radio show. "He has to get healthy, and the Colts have to move in another direction." Just like that. Owner Jim Irsay made if official on his Twitter account Friday morning, which was quickly followed by an official announcement from the team. "We thank Bob for his incredible contributions," Irsay said. Sanders returned the favor in the same release from the team. "I want to thank Mr. Irsay for the opportunity to play"
Jim Irsay: Colts release safety Bob Sanders
"Colts owner Jim Irsay posted on Twitter today that the team has released safety Bob Sanders. "We have released Bob Sanders today. We thank Bob 4 all his incredible contributions from his Sup Bowl pic 2 def player of year honors," Irsay said. Sanders has only played in 9 regular season games the past three seasons due to injuries. The Colts selected the safety in the 2nd round of the 2004 NFL Draft."
Irsay: Bob Sanders headed to season-ending injured reserve list
"Bob Sanders is headed to the season-ending injured reserve list, according to Jim Irsay. On his Twitter account, the team's owner said: "Bob Sanders to go on I.R soon . . . we need the roster spot with so many injuries.'' The Colts have carried their veteran safety on the active roster since he tore his right biceps tendon in the Sept. 12 season opener at Houston."
Sanders watches teammates practice
"Bob Sanders' return from a torn right biceps tendon has advanced to include his return to town. The Indianapolis Colts' veteran safety was on hand for this afternoon's practice, although he did not participate. Sanders underwent surgery in mid-September to repair the injury he suffered in the Sept. 12 season opener at Houston. He had been rehabilitating in California."
Caldwell: Bob Sanders' surgery successful
"The surgery to repair Bob Sanders' torn right biceps tendon "went well," Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell said today, optimism he based on text messages exchanged with the two-time Pro Bowl safety. "He feels good about the process," Caldwell said of Sanders, who underwent the procedure Wednesday with orthopedic surgeon James Andrews. "He's starting the healing and rehab process." Sanders was injured in the second series of Sunday's 34-24 loss at Houston. It's the latest in a series of injury setbacks for the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who has missed more games (49) than he has played (48) in his seven-year career. He played just two games last season due to a torn left"
Could Bob Sanders return to Colts this season?
"The latest injury and surgery will keep safety Bob Sanders out of the Indianapolis Colts' lineup for the foreseeable future, possibly until the playoffs. The two-time Pro Bowl selection and 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year had surgery Wednesday to repair a torn right biceps tendon. The Colts plan to keep Sanders on the 53-player active roster as they monitor his rehabilitation. Pinpointing a time for Sanders' return is difficult. "He had the very same operation on the other arm last year and healed up within somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks,'' Colts president Bill Polian said on NFL Network's "Total Access." "Right now we're leaving him on the 53-man active roster, hoping and"
Colts' Sanders has surgery to repair torn biceps tendon
"Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders underwent surgery today to repair a torn biceps tendon in his right arm, team officials announced. Sanders, who suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday's loss at Houston, "will remain on the 53-man active roster at this time as the club monitors his rehabilitation," the team said in a news release. The release went on to say "any timetable for the possibility of a return remains undetermined.'' Sanders' surgery was performed by noted sports injury specialist Dr. James Andrews."
Sanders to visit surgeon today
"The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday that safety Bob Sanders is scheduled to meet today with noted sports injury specialist Dr. James Andrews to determine the severity of his right arm injury. The Colts said they will provide details after the surgeon's examination. The Colts did not confirm an ESPN report citing two team sources that Sanders has a torn biceps tendon and is out indefinitely, possibly for the season. Sanders, who exited late in the first quarter of Sunday's 34-24 loss at Houston, was scheduled to have a magnetic imaging resonance exam Monday, the team said. He participated in the Colts' light late-afternoon workout, which raised optimism the injury was not serious. But"
Sources: Bob Sanders out indefinitely
"Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders has a torn biceps tendon and is out indefinitely, if not for the season, two team sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Sanders, the league's 2007 defensive player of the year, was injured on the Texans' first offensive series when a pass was deflected by Colts safety Antoine Bethea into Sanders' face mask. Sanders left his feet and landed awkwardly on his arm."
Colts vague about Sanders' injury
"The nature and severity of the injury to Bob Sanders' right arm remains unknown, but this much is known about the Indianapolis Colts' veteran safety: He was fit enough to participate in the team's light workout Monday. When the players reported for their work-out-the-kinks session following Sunday's loss at Houston, Sanders was among them. Players were not made available for comment after practice and the team offered little update on Sanders' injury, which occurred during the first quarter of the 34-24 loss to the Texans. "Bob's injury is an arm injury," team president Bill Polian said on his Monday night radio show. "That's all I know." The fact Sanders was on the field might be a"
Sanders keeps working himself into playing shape
"Bob Sanders was out of the country but back in his element. More to the point, the Indianapolis Colts' veteran safety was back on the field. Sanders' return was one of the more significant subplots to the Colts' trip to Toronto last week to face the Buffalo Bills in a preseason game. Injuries have limited him to seven games, including the playoffs, in the past 23 months. In 2009, he played only two games while dealing with a knee injury and ruptured left biceps tendon. Linebacker and defensive captain Gary Brackett said it was good to see Sanders "flying around. The game will come to him." It will, but he needs more time for that to happen. Sanders was credited with two assisted tackles,"
8 Colts ruled out of game against 49ers
"The Indianapolis Colts have ruled eight players out of Sunday's preseason opener with the San Francisco 49ers in Lucas Oil Stadium, and there might be more. Coach Jim Caldwell said the chances of safety Bob Sanders playing "are slim.'' It's also possible defensive end Dwight Freeney and receiver Anthony Gonzalez will be held out of the game. Sanders participated in this morning's light workout at Anderson University, but Freeney and Gonzalez were among several players who did not. The list of players who will not play consists of tight end Dallas Clark, defensive tackle Keyunta Dawson, wide receiver Pierre Garcon, linebackers Clint Session and Ramon Humber, offensive tackle Charlie"
Colts' Sanders healthy, excited to be practicing
"Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders met the media Friday for the first time since the middle of the 2009 season. He grinned. He gushed. "I'm excited to be back. I'm excited to be practicing. I'm excited to get back to doing what I love to do," said Sanders, who played only two games last season. "I've been able to rehab myself back to pretty decent health where I can actually practice full time. (Organized team activities) have really gone well for me. The knee has been doing great. The arm has been doing great. I feel great." The Colts have conducted six OTAs and on Friday opened a three-day minicamp. Sanders missed the first five games last season while recovering from offseason knee"
Bob Sanders, Anthony Gonzalez back on field for Colts OTAs
"The Indianapolis Colts appear to have their health as they go through the next phase of their offseason program. Safety Bob Sanders and wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez were among the players participating in the second of nine organized team activities (OTAs) today at the team's West 56th Street complex. Sanders suffered a season-ending biceps injury against San Francisco Nov. 1 while Gonzalez sustained what proved to be a season-ending injury to his right knee in the team's Sept. 13 opener against Jacksonville. Sanders was not made available to the media today, but Gonzalez insisted he was as close to 100 percent as he's likely to be. "It was nice just to finally be back and feel like"
Sanders looks to '10 season
"While his teammates are basking in the klieg lights of Super Bowl XLIV, Bob Sanders is keeping a low profile. The Indianapolis Colts' injured safety will watch Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints from the sideline in street clothes, but his gaze is a bit further down the road. Sanders is eagerly looking forward to the 2010 season. "My goal is to come back strong -- stronger than ever -- and make an impact, make something happen," he said Wednesday at the team's hotel. "No one wants to end a career (beset with injuries). You know, 'He was OK, but he didn't play long enough. He was too injured.' "No one wants their career to be overshadowed by injuries. I know I don't." Sanders'"
Colts' secondary absorbs more hits
"Two years ago, it appeared the Indianapolis Colts had the makings of one of the NFL's outstanding secondaries. Two weeks ago, it appeared it was all about to come together. Not this year. Safety Bob Sanders has been placed on injured reserve and will require season-ending surgery to repair a torn biceps, and starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden is expected to miss up to four weeks with a knee injury, the club announced Friday. With the season-ending knee injury cornerback Marlin Jackson suffered in practice Wednesday, free safety Antoine Bethea will be the only member of the projected starting secondary on the field Sunday when the Houston Texans meet the Colts in a key AFC South game at"
Colts lose Sanders, Hayden for extended period
"Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders will require surgery to repair an injury to his left elbow and miss an undetermined amount of time. Also, starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden is expected to miss up to four weeks with a knee injury. Coach Jim Caldwell confirmed the team will be without two of their starting defensive players, perhaps for at least a month, this morning. Sanders, who missed the first five games of the season while completing his rehabilitation from offseason knee surgery, suffered the injury in last Sunday's win over San Francisco. He sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, a noted orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala., and it was determined surgery is required."
Colts' injury woes mount: Marlin Jackson, Anthony Gonzalez, Bob Sanders
"The Indianapolis Colts have placed cornerback Marlin Jackson on injured reserve and filled his roster spot by signing free agent defensive end Josh Thomas. The club also announced that on Thursday wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery to "clean out loose particles" and safety Bob Sanders visited Dr. James Andrews to get an opinion on the left elbow injury Sanders suffered on Sunday against San Francisco. Jackson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a non-contact drill on Wednesday and will require season-ending knee surgery. Jackson also suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice last year. Gonzalez aggravated his injury"
Sanders misses 2nd consecutive practice
"The Indianapolis Colts face the prospect of being without Bob Sanders - again - Sunday when they entertain the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium. The veteran safety missed his second consecutive practice Thursday because of an elbow injury suffered in last Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers. "He's getting it evaluated,'' coach Jim Caldwell said of Sanders prior to this afternoon's practice. Caldwell added the injury did not keep Sanders from finishing the 49ers game, but it flared up "a little while later.''"
Sanders may be out
"It's uncertain whether Bob Sanders will be available when the Indianapolis Colts host the Houston Texans on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The veteran safety missed his second straight practice Thursday after suffering an elbow injury in last weekend's win over San Francisco. "He's getting it evaluated," said coach Jim Caldwell, who was unable to elaborate on the injury's severity. Caldwell noted the injury did not keep Sanders from finishing the 49ers game but became an issue "a little while later." If Sanders is out, Melvin Bullitt is back in the starting lineup. As has been the case whenever Sanders has missed time -- he was out for the first five games of the season while completing his"
Sanders critiques his season debut
"After further review, Bob Sanders wasn't overwhelmed with his first appearance of the season. But it shouldn't come as a surprise his 2009 debut -- one tackle and one assist in 31 plays last Sunday at St. Louis -- didn't exactly measure up to his lofty standards. "I'm always real critical of myself," the Colts safety and 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year said Thursday. "I thought I played OK after the game, but when I go back and look at it, I felt like I missed some tackles. "I felt like I left some plays out there that I should have made." It was mentioned the Rams game essentially was a preseason game for Sanders, who missed all of preseason and the Colts' first five regular-season"
Colts' Bob Sanders gets green light
"It has been the better part of 10 months since Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders uncoiled and collided with someone on a football field. "I'm sure he's got a lot of pent-up energy," defensive end Dwight Freeney said Friday afternoon. "I'm sure he's going to give somebody a lick." The opportunity comes on Sunday, at long last. That's when Sanders, the NFL's 2007 Defensive Player of the Year, will return to his normal spot in the starting lineup when the Colts meet the St. Louis Rams in the Edward Jones Dome. He missed the first five games while completing his rehabilitation from offseason knee surgery. "I'm excited, just getting ready, gearing up," Sanders said. "It's been a long time.""
Bob Sanders goes through a full practice, seems ready to play Sunday at St. Louis
"Will he or won't he? For the first time this season, strong safety Bob Sanders participated in all drills Wednesday as the Indianapolis Colts practiced for their Sunday game at St. Louis. The 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year offered no guarantees, but he was bullish. "Definitely," he said. "I feel better than I've felt for a long time. I definitely feel excited about it and hopefully I'll be able to get in there and get some plays." Sanders has been rehabilitating since offseason surgery on his right knee. He has not played this season and began practicing on a limited basis two weeks ago. Pro Bowl end Dwight Freeney sounded like he fully expects his teammate to be on the field at the"
Sanders hopes 'to get in there and get some plays'
"Bob Sanders was scheduled to practice today and hopes to play Sunday, when the Indianapolis Colts visit St. Louis. "I feel better than I've felt for a long time," the Colts' star safety said. "I definitely feel excited about it and hopefully I'll be able to get in there and get some plays." Sanders is recovering from offseason surgery on his right knee to remove cartilage. He hasn't played this season and only began practicing two weeks ago. Colts coach Jim Caldwell said Sanders wouldn't necessarily need to practice every day this week to get the go-ahead for Sunday. Caldwell said the team will be cautious and its training staff will closely monitor Sanders' status."
Handful of injured Colts near return
"As the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts turn their attention toward returning from a bye weekend and preparing for next Sunday's game at St. Louis, they expect to have several key players back from injury. Cornerback Kelvin Hayden and left tackle Charlie Johnson assure they should be ready. It's also possible two-time Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders finally could see his first action of the season. The oft-injured Sanders, sidelined for 40 of 85 games in his five-year career, is recovering from offseason surgery on his right knee and has practiced on a limited basis for two weeks. "He is hungry, there's no question about that," coach Jim Caldwell said before the team was given four days off. "I"
Still no decision on Sanders for Sunday
"Safety Bob Sanders practiced for the third time this week on Friday, and the Indianapolis Colts' injury report listed him as doubtful for the Colts' game at Tennessee on Sunday. Doubtful, according to NFL guidelines, means there is a 75 percent chance a player will not play, but Sanders didn't rule himself out. "Not sure yet. We haven't made a decision on that," Sanders said after practice. "If you hear anything, you'll hear it from coach Caldwell." Colts coach Jim Caldwell was noncommittal when he spoke with the media earlier in the day. "Not real sure at this point," Caldwell said. Sanders had surgery on his right knee during the offseason. The 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has"

Colts Sanders practices, return uncertain
"Bob Sanders has returned to practice for the first time since undergoing offseason surgery on his right knee, but it's still uncertain when the Indianapolis Colts veteran safety will be ready for a game. Coach Jim Caldwell said Sanders participated in the team's light workout Monday, has steadily "ramped up'' his rehabilitation regimen and anticipates Sanders practicing in a limited capacity this afternoon. The NFL's 2007 Defensive Player of the Year has been inactive for the first four games of the season. Asked if there was a chance Sanders could be available for Sunday night's game in Nashville against the Tennessee Titans, Caldwell replied, "At this point, I would not be able to tell"
Colts face familiar dilemma: a sidelined Sanders
"Once again, the Indianapolis Colts face the prospect of life without safety Bob Sanders, however briefly. The only question is when the two-time Pro Bowl selection and 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year will be cleared to join practice, then get up to game speed. "Right now, we really don't know," Sanders said Wednesday in his first meeting with the media since the start of training camp Aug. 2. "I'm not going to get into details about whether I'm playing, whether I'm practicing or not. "As soon as it happens, you guys will be the first ones to know." Sanders is still rehabilitating his right knee following offseason surgery and did not practice Wednesday. So, again, the Colts will move"
Sanders noncommittal on return to Colts
"Bob Sanders is making progress on his comeback from offseason knee surgery, but the Indianapolis Colts veteran safety was noncommittal today on when he'll return to the lineup. Sanders missed all of preseason after undergoing surgery on his right knee. "I feel good,'' he said in his first meeting with the local media since he reported to training camp on Aug. 2. "It's been a long time since I've talked to you guys, but I'm feeling good. "I'm encouraged about the rehab and everything. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks.'' Sanders hasn't been officially ruled out of Sunday's opener against Jacksonville at Lucas Oil Stadium, although that would run counter to how the Colts have"
Caldwell: Sanders in question for opener
"The availability of safety Bob Sanders for the Indianapolis Colts' regular-season opener remains in doubt. Sanders is on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing surgery on his right knee during the offseason. He missed 10 games in 2008 after having surgery on the same knee. "I'm not certain,'' coach Jim Caldwell replied this morning when asked if he was confident Sanders would be ready for the Sept. 13 opener against Jacksonville. "I would say that if I felt that way. I'm really not certain. "The most important thing is to get him healthy.'' The team recently discussed Sanders' situation with its own doctors and James Andrews, the noted orthopedic surgeon who performed"
Sanders ready to return
"The Indianapolis Colts have been here before with safety Bob Sanders, who is expected to return to the starting lineup for the playoffs after missing the bulk of the regular season. Sound familiar? Remember 2006, and the run to the Super Bowl? "Just like '06, yeah,'' coach Tony Dungy said Tuesday afternoon. We'll see. When Indy ventures into San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium against the Chargers on Saturday night, Sanders should be at his normal strong safety position. The league's 2007 Defensive Player of the Year missed 10 games during the regular season because of ankle and knee issues. Sanders still was on the mend from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and didn't play when the Colts"
Sanders activated for today's game
"Safety Bob Sanders is active and expected to play, but the Indianapolis Colts will be without three starters when they meet the Cincinnati Bengals this afternoon in Lucas Oil Stadium. Among the team's pre-game inactives are center Jeff Saturday (calf); linebacker Gary Brackett (fibula); and defensive tackle Keyunta Dawson (hamstring)."
Sure, he's great, but is Sanders worth it?
"Bob Sanders was awarded a five-year, $37.5 million deal with $20 million in guarantees after leading the Indianapolis Colts to the Super Bowl victory after the 2006 season. Now, a year-and-a-half later, having played just 51 games in four-plus seasons, it's fair to wonder if the investment was worth it. The good news is, Sanders has never missed a playoff game, although the safety clearly was diminished in those postseason losses to Pittsburgh and San Diego. The bad news is, he's going to get through this, his fifth season, falling significantly short of a full season. That's a lot of money -- a lot of money -- for a part-time player. Nice gig if you can get it. And heading into this"
Sanders close to return, but not this Sunday
"The Indianapolis Colts will be without Bob Sanders for at least one more game. The Pro Bowl safety is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Cleveland, but coach Tony Dungy said Sanders will not play. "He's close," Dungy said after Friday's practice. Close enough, Dungy said prior to the workout, that if injuries kept safeties Antoine Bethea (ankle) and Melvin Bullitt (rib) out of the game, Sanders could play. After practice, though, Dungy indicated Bethea and Bullitt would be available, allowing Sanders another week to heal. Dungy said he received "good news" regarding Sanders' right knee from team physicians and that Sanders "feels pretty good.'' The 2007 Defensive Player of the"
Colts' Sanders, Hayden questionable
"The Indianapolis Colts will take momentum and a three-game winning streak with them when they visit the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. It remains to be seen if safety Bob Sanders and cornerback Kelvin Hayden tag along. Each did not play in last Sunday's 33-27 victory over Houston at Lucas Oil Stadium. Sanders developed swelling in his right knee after practicing on Thursday while Hayden is dealing with a hamstring injury. Asked this afternoon if Sanders, the NFL's 2007 Defensive Player of the Year, would return to the lineup against the Chargers, coach Tony Dungy replied, "We hope so, yeah.'' And Hayden? "Kelvin, I think, is going to be close,'' Dungy said. "He did some running last week."

Sore knee sidelines Sanders for today
"The Indianapolis Colts will be without Bob Sanders - and three-fourths of their starting defensive secondary - for today's game with the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Pro Bowl safety is one of the team's pre-game inactives. Sanders missed Friday's practice with what Colts' officials described as a sore knee. Also inactive is cornerback Kelvin Hayden, who's dealing with a hamstring injury. The team's other starting cornerback, Marlin Jackson, suffered a season-ending knee injury last month. Melvin Bullitt likely will replace Sanders in the starting lineup alongside Antoine Bethea. The starting cornerbacks will be Tim Jennings and Keiwan Ratliff. The team's other inactives are"
Colts Sanders, Addai, Hayden to practice again
"Three ailing starters were expected to return to practice this afternoon, providing a boost to a wavering Indianapolis Colts outfit for Sunday's meeting with New England in Lucas Oil Stadium. Safety Bob Sanders (knee/ankle), cornerback Kelvin Hayden (knee) and running back Joseph Addai (hamstring) were scheduled to participate in the two-hour workout. "If everything goes smoothly,'' coach Tony Dungy said, "they should play.'' Sanders, the NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, has not played since spraining his right ankle Sept. 14 at Minnesota. He also underwent arthroscopic surgery on one of his knees while he was recovering from the ankle injury. Hayden has missed the past three"
