Bill Guerin, now officially retired after 18 NHL seasons, stood behind a podium at Consol Energy Center on Monday and declared he did not "really have a lot to say." Almost 21 minutes later, he had thanked family, friends, and each of his eight former teams - paying special attention to the New Jersey Devils, who gave him a shot, and the Penguins, who gave him one at another Stanley Cup. During those minutes, he wiped tears from his eyes while discussing his wife and four children, flashed that slightly crooked grin while recalling a career that produced 427 regular-season goals, and breathed deeply while openly contemplating his next career move. "There are so many different levels of"

The Penguins have decided not to bring back veteran right wing Bill Guerin this season. Guerin was informed of the decision by Penguins general manager Ray Shero late Wednesday. Shero said last Friday after signing free-agent winger Arron Asham that a decision regarding Guerin's future would come this week. Guerin, 39, scored 21 goals for the Penguins last season, and his four playoff goals tied for the lead among wingers. Several times since the Penguins were eliminated in Round 2 of the playoffs Guerin stated his desire was to play a final NHL season with them. However, it was never clear if he was willing to accept a reduction on his $2 million salary. The Penguins project $1.7 million"

Veteran right wing Bill Guerin and center Jordan Staal are skating with the Penguins at a morning practice today at Bell Center. However, it is not known if either will participate play tonight in Game 4. Guerin and Staal were not worked into the top four during line shifts at practice ? often an indication a player will be scratched for the night's game."

Penguins right wing Bill Guerin will turn 40 later this year, but he isn't too old to spark his team by dropping the gloves. Late in the first period against Atlanta on Saturday, Guerin landed a number of right hands against Jim Slater. Guerin, who has drawn five fighting majors this season, now has fought in the past two games. A team leader since his arrival from the Islanders last season, Guerin said after the team's early-morning practice Thursday that it was time for the team to "get serious." He was all business in yesterday's one-sided fight. Coach Dan Bylsma has made it clear that he approves of players sticking up for themselves, and he praised Guerin's aggression yesterday."

Penguins right winger Bill Guerin was back on the ice at Monday's optional practice and appears a reasonable bet to play in Raleigh on Thursday against the Hurricanes. Guerin has missed the past three games with back spasms but made it through a 30-minute workout at Southpointe in good shape. "It just takes time," he said. "It depends on how long it takes to get it to settle down and loosen up." Guerin has endured a couple of minor bouts of back spasms during his career. He thought about taking part in Sunday's pregame skate before the Penguins' 2-1 victory over Boston but figured resting would be wise, especially since the team doesn't play until Thursday."

Penguins winger Bill Guerin (back) will be a game-time decision to play Saturday against Dallas at Mellon Arena. A late scratch Thursday night at the New York Rangers because of back spasms, Guerin did not practice Friday at Southpointe. If Guerin does play, he will skate on a line with center Sidney Crosby and winger Chris Kunitz. If he cannot, newly acquired winger Alexei Ponikarovsky may share shifts on lines centered by both Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. ? Ponikarovsky practiced with the Penguins for the first time since he was acquired late Tuesday night from Toronto. He will wear No. 23, last worn by winger Eric Boguniecki in 2006. Ponikarovsky will see time as a net-front presence on"

Undisclosed injuries prevented winger Bill Guerin and defenseman Alex Goligoski from playing for the Penguins against the New York Rangers on Monday night. Guerin had appeared in each of the Penguins' previous 53 games. Goligoski has appeared in 22 straight games since missing 10 of 11 from Nov. 16-Dec. 7. He has recorded only seven assists since returning after posting six goals and 14 points before he was injured. Forward Chris Conner was recalled from AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to replace Guerin in the lineup. He previously appeared in six games from Oct. 30-Nov. 12, recording one assist in those contests. He played last night on a line with center Sidney Crosby and winger"

Judging by how gingerly the Penguins' Bill Guerin was walking Tuesday night after taking a Chris Pronger clearing attempt on the foot, it wouldn't have been a huge surprise if he hadn't suited up Thursday at the Wachovia Center. Guerin skipped Wednesday's practice but was back in uniform Thursday. "It was fine," Guerin said. "It wasn't serious." Guerin did not take another shift after being hit by the Pronger blast late in the third period Tuesday. Jordan Staal was also injured Tuesday. He was nailed by an Evgeni Malkin slapshot in the stomach and did not play the remainder of the game. Staal, too, was fine and able to play Thursday in Philadelphia. » Guerin has played for eight teams in"

Coach Dan Bylsma said he is "preparing like (winger Bill Guerin) is playing" for the Penguins tonight against the Flyers at Philadelphia. Guerin did not practice Wednesday at Southpointe, but he walked without a noticeable limp after practice. His right skate boot was hit by a puck late in the third period of a win against the Flyers on Tuesday night, and Guerin did not finish the game. » Forward Max Talbot's status for tonight will depend on Guerin's availability, as Bylsma indicated that winger Eric Godard would dress against the Flyers. Godard is the club's top fighter, and many Penguins players said they expect a rough and physical game from the Flyers, who are on a 3-11-0 stretch and"

Hours before his first goal of the NHL season, veteran Penguins winger Bill Guerin made a point to crack jokes with several reporters. After any other game-day skate, this act would have not drawn notice. However, this session wrapped about 14 hours after the Penguins failed to score a goal at home against the Phoenix Coyotes - a franchise never confused for a traditional league power. The nature of that loss disgusted Guerin as much as any teammate, but ... "It's one loss," he said to reporters, grinning slyly as those words left his lips. "So, I guess going undefeated is out. What will we do now?" Penguins winger Jordan Staal shook his head and offered: "That's Billy for you ... but"
