Ben Roethlisberger News & Rumors

Roethlisberger eager to learn where offense is headed
"Todd Haley has been hired, has met with his new colleagues on Mike Tomlin's coaching staff and members of the Steelers front office, and he finally met with the media Thursday. But he still has not talked to the man who makes that offense go, and they likely won't meet until next week. "I haven't talked to him," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Thursday morning at the Steelers training facility an hour before Tomlin introduced Haley as his new offensive coordinator. He is eager to do so and anxious about what Haley wants to do with the offense. Roethlisberger also has done some research of his own."
Roethlisberger speaks on Haley hire, state of offense
"Todd Haley has been hired, met with his new colleagues on Mike Tomlin's coaching staff, with members of the front office and finally with the media at noon today. Another Steelers employee was looking forward this morning to his first meeting with the new offensive coordinator: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. "I haven't talked to him," Roethlisberger said at the Steelers training facility where, 20 minutes later, Haley would be introduced at a press conference just down the hall as the team's new offensive coordinator."
Quarterback Roethlisberger is looking for some answers from Steelers
"Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, miffed that Bruce Arians will not return as offensive coordinator, plans to meet with team president Art Rooney II about the matter after playing in the Pro Bowl on Sunday. "When I get back, I'm going to go up to Mr. Rooney's office and ask him what he wants from me, what he wants from this offense, because I think that's a viable question for him," Roethlisberger told the Tribune-Review on Thursday following an AFC practice at Hickam Air Force Base. "He's our owner and our boss, so I really would like to know kind of what he wants and where he sees our offense going because I'd like to tell him where I see us going.""
Steelers have QB issues for offseason
"For the first time since he became coach in 2007, Mike Tomlin will have some issues to address at quarterback. And not just on the depth chart. Sure, he has to decide which veteran quarterback he wants to keep most -- Charlie Batch, 37, who compiled a 3-1 record filling in for Ben Roethlisberger the past two seasons and has been the healthiest quarterback on the roster; or Byron Leftwich, who was brought in via a trade to replace Roethlisberger for four games at the start of the 2010 season, but instead has thrown seven meaningful passes in the past 2 1/2 seasons because of injuries. Of greater significance is how Roethlisberger will adjust to a new offensive coordinator, especially if"
Lake Tahoe rape case against Big Ben settled quietly
"Lawyers have reached a settlement to end a civil lawsuit filed against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger by a Nevada woman who accused him of raping her during a celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. Cal Dunlap, the Reno lawyer representing the woman, told The Associated Press on Friday that the case has been settled. It is not known if the woman received any money in the settlement. The woman, a former VIP concierge at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino, claimed that Roethlisberger raped her in July 2008 while he was at Lake Tahoe playing in the tournament. She filed the lawsuit in Reno a year later, saying that the two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback lured her to his room"
Despite injury, Ben will do what he does best
"Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is like "a grandfather." Arians prefers "crazy uncle." The two are extremely close. Know that going in. "He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer in my mind," Arians said of Roethlisberger. "He's won two Super Bowls and been to a third. He's not done with Super Bowls, I believe. Even if he stopped right now, he'd be a first-ballot guy." The man gets no argument here. Roethlisberger will play in more Super Bowls, win more Super Bowls and ultimately be remembered as the greatest quarterback in Steelers history."
On the Steelers: Hindsight hurts like an ankle sprain
"Did the Steelers make a mistake playing Ben Roethlisberger and Maurkice Pouncey last Sunday in Cleveland? In retrospect, they did. Turns out, that game meant nothing. Had they lost, they would still be the No. 5 seed. They won, 13-9, with Cleveland having a chance to win the game near the end. The Steelers offense behind Roethlisberger and with Pouncey was ineffective. Surely Charlie Batch could have guided them to 13 points. They played Pouncey, for one reason: Doug Legursky was hurt and Trai Essex would have had to play center. They also were clinging to the notion that they still had a reasonable chance at the No. 2 seed had the Bengals beaten the Ravens. That didn't happen and both"
Roethlisberger limping but probable
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger participated in Friday's practice in preparation for Sunday's AFC wild-card game at Denver. Roethlisberger is listed as probable, but continued to limp noticeably in practice. Roethlisberger played in two of the last three regular-season games with a high ankle sprain. Charlie Batch is expected to get the start if Roethlisberger is unable to go before the 4:30 p.m. kickoff at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. Center Maurkice Pouncey did not practice for the second day in a row and is unlikely to start against the Broncos. Guard Doug Legursky would take Pouncey's spot at center. Also, Legursky (shoulder), linebackers James Harrison (toe) and LaMarr"
Roethlisberger returns to practice, Pouncey sits out
"Instead of relief, the week keeps bringing more bad news regarding injuries for the Steelers. Center Maurkice Pouncey, who returned to play last Sunday after missing two games with a high ankle sprain, did not practice Thursday because his ankle took a turn for the worst. "I practiced the other day and toward the end I got sore," Pouncey said after practice Thursday. "Today, I came in and my ankle was real sore, so I don't know what the turnout is going to be. Right now, I'm not practicing.""
Steelers' Roethlisberger tweaks ailing ankle
"Fewer than 24 hours after Mike Tomlin said Ben Roethlisberger's left high-ankle sprain was "no worse" than it was before the Cleveland game, the Steelers quarterback revealed that he suffered a setback against the Browns that left him limited during Wednesday's practice. Roethlisberger said he aggravated the injury on a third-quarter play against the Browns, but it wasn't bad enough for him to leave the game. He is expected to start when the Steelers play Denver on Sunday in an AFC wild-card game. "I felt really good going into the Cleveland game," said Roethlisberger, who first injured the ankle Dec. 8 against the Browns at Heinz Field. "I don't know if I caught it on the ground wrong or"
A day after Tomlin says Big Ben is OK, QB misses practice with sprained ankle
"Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin seem to be at odds over the extent of the quarterback's high ankle sprain and whether he came through the Cleveland game no worse for the wear. Roethlisberger said Wednesday he had a setback Sunday in Cleveland. This came after Tomlin said Tuesday that he didn't have a setback and proclaimed his quarterback's ankle "OK.""
Roethlisberger has 'setback' with bum ankle
"As if the Steelers didn't have enough bad news with injuries lately as they prepare to open the playoffs Sunday in Denver, now comes more: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's sprained ankle took a setback Sunday during their game in Cleveland. "I felt really good going in the Cleveland game," Roethlisberger said today. "I had a little setback early in the third quarter, so we're working really hard right now with the trainers and doctors to get back to even where we were before the Cleveland game.""
Ben's recovery? It's elementary
"The progress Ben Roethlisberger makes on his ABCs could have a direct correlation on how far the Steelers play into January -- and beyond. The Steelers quarterback is working his way back from a high-ankle sprain, and Roethlisberger's recovery regimen is as comprehensive as his catalog of fourth-quarter comebacks. One exercise Roethlisberger regularly engages in as he tries to strengthen the ankle that was nearly snapped almost a month ago involves the alphabet. Roethlisberger said he puts a rubber band over his left foot and traces every letter of the alphabet, using his big toe as if it were a highlighter. "Throughout the alphabet," Roethlisberger said, "you hit every range of motion.""
Browns' Scott Paxson's hit on Ben Roethlisberger still being felt
"Browns highlights against the Pittsburgh Steelers have been scarce in the Ben Roethlisberger era. One of them was produced Dec. 8 by Scott Paxson. Scott Paxson? Yes, he was the guy who toppled the towering Pittsburgh quarterback with a low hit while Brian Schaefering hit him high. As Roethlisberger crumpled to the ground, the two backup defensive tackles fell on him. "They hit him from opposite sides," Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron said. "One of them was going down, and he just got twisted underneath them. It was really remarkable that [Roethlisberger] came back." Roethlisberger was taken inside for X-rays. After halftime, he limped back to the Steelers' bench, hobbled by what"
Polamalu, Pouncey, Roethlisberger ready to go
"Maurkice Pouncey will play Sunday against Cleveland, while Ben Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu likely are to join him in the starting lineup for the regular-season finale. Pouncey (ankle) went through a full practice for a third consecutive day Friday and said he will start against the Browns. "I know for a fact that I am playing," Pouncey said. Roethlisberger worked through his third consecutive day of practice without any complications from a high ankle sprain and is expected to start Sunday. However, he wouldn't confirm his status after practice yesterday. "I don't know," Roethlisberger said. "We'll see. Go ask Mike Tomlin." Polamalu (knee) practiced yesterday for the first time this"
Roethlisberger on track to play vs. Browns
"Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger practiced Thursday, keeping him on track to play Sunday in the regular-season finale at Cleveland. With the Steelers gearing up for the playoffs, Roethlisberger said his priority is getting as close to full strength as possible. "I'd like to get to 75 (percent)," Roethlisberger said. "I'd be really happy with that." Roethlisberger is working through the first high-ankle sprain of his career, an injury he sustained Dec. 8 when the Steelers and Browns first played this season. The rematch has significant postseason implications for the visitors."
Roethlisberger likely to play Sunday against Cleveland
"Ben Roethlisberger had the look of a starting quarterback again Wednesday, leading his offense through a full practice and leaving an impression on his teammates that he's ready to return Sunday in Cleveland. "He looked all right," Hines Ward said. "I don't know if he really ran around or stuff like that. He looked good so, with a week [off], he's feeling a little better, it definitely helped him. "I'm sure he wants to get a little playing time before we head to the playoffs, considering we don't know the circumstances of what's going to happen.""
Roethlisberger won't start against Rams
"Charlie Batch will start at quarterback for the injured Ben Roethlisberger as the Steelers try to beat the reeling St. Louis Rams and stay in the hunt for the AFC North title. Roethlisberger did not practice all week, and the Steelers listed him as questionable for today's 1 p.m. game at Heinz Field. Like Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey is nursing a high-ankle sprain, and the Pro Bowl center already has been ruled out for today. Roethlisberger played the entire game last Monday night in San Francisco, and he could dress today and serve as an emergency quarterback. The Steelers will try to rest him even though offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said last Thursday that Roethlisberger did"
Steelers QB Batch to start, Big Ben to rest ailing ankle
"Ben Roethlisberger will be in uniform today when the Steelers face the St. Louis Rams at Heinz Field, but he is not expected to play because of his injured left ankle. Roethlisberger did not practice this week, and coach Mike Tomlin never has allowed a player who has not practiced to play in a game. He is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by veteran Charlie Batch. Steelers Digest, the team's official in-house publication, said Batch will start against the Rams."
Steelers QB Roethlisberger rests ankle again
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, still noticeably bothered by a high-left ankle sprain, didn't practice for the second straight day Thursday. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Roethlisberger is a game-day decision for Saturday's contest against the St. Louis Rams at Heinz Field. When asked about sitting Roethlisberger as the Rams are doing with Sam Bradford and a similar injury, Arians barked at the notion. "They're not in same boat we're in," said Arians, who said they made decision to play Roethlisberger this past Monday after seeing the quarterback move in pregame warmups. "We're still playing for a bye and a lot of things, back-to-back 12-4 season. There's no reason for that.""
Steelers QB Roethlisberger stands by coach
"In the violence-heavy, manhood-testing NFL, there is constant warfare between hearts and heads when it comes to playing hurt. Doctors and coaches usually have the final word. Otherwise, short of severed limbs, the heart prevails. "Usually," said Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who would know. Hobbling with his high-ankle sprain between stadium blackouts during Monday night's 20-3 loss to San Francisco, Roethlisberger threw three interceptions, took three sacks and produced a 52.3 quarterback rating, his lowest in 31 regular-season games dating to Nov. 15, 2009. The nasty Niners defense had much to do with that, but Roethlisberger's utter lack of mobility also contributed. Moving"
QB situation remains iffy
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's ankle is no worse than it was last week, he said, and others said he is getting around better than he did last week. So, the decision should be easier for Mike Tomlin this week than it was to start his quarterback Monday night in San Francisco. But his decision could be a different one. "I'm going to wait to hear from him," Roethlisberger said."
Steelers sources: Roethlisberger might sit rest of regular season
"Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin hasn't announced his intentions at quarterback publicly or within the organization, but it's widely believed in the front office that Ben Roethlisberger will rest his high ankle sprain Saturday against the St. Louis Rams and could sit out Week 17 as well. Roethlisberger was clearly hobbled during Monday night's 20-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He was immobile and had to adjust his plant foot on throws to compensate for the injury. With the Steelers assured a playoff spot and trailing the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North title on a tiebreaker, the team will focus on being healthy for the postseason."
Steelers had no leg to stand on
"Ben Roethlisberger's toughness is legendary, mythic even, embodying the industrial-strength spirit of blue-collar Pittsburgh. Gritty "Big Ben" doesn't go down easily in the pocket, and he doesn't come out of the lineup easily, either. No matter the injury, the Steelers quarterback seems to gut it out, suck it up and play through it. There he was during warm-ups on Monday Night Football, grimacing and gimping with each dropback and follow-through. He moved with the grace of a petrified Frankenstein. His right ankle appeared atrophied compared to his injured left ankle, which was encased in a brace."
Steelers coach is defending Big Ben decision
"Ben Roethlisberger didn't leave Monday night's game late in the fourth quarter with the outcome decided because, well, he didn't want to. With the Steelers trailing San Francisco by three scores, Roethlisberger refused to exit the game despite being limited with a high-ankle sprain sustained Dec. 8. "When Coach tried to get me out, I said, 'No, I'm not putting you in that situation, and I'm not quitting on our guys," Roethlisberger said. "I started this thing. I'm going to finish it.""
No bye, no break for Big Ben
"Let's dispense with any nonsense right away: Ben Roethlisberger can play, should play and will play. He'll play Saturday against St. Louis. He'll play the following week in Cleveland. And he'll play in what now looks to be a wild-card game. He's the Steelers' most pivotal player, and, in case people aren't paying attention, his team hardly is pivoting toward dominance. These aren't the recent Colts, Saints, Packers or Steelers, for that matter, to be pondering going into sleep mode for a couple weeks, then suddenly awakening their inner giant when the alarm goes off. It's up to Roethlisberger to get these guys going and keep them going. He needs to be out there."
Questionable use of Big Ben?
"The decision to play a noticeably hobbled Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback against the San Francisco 49ers Monday night sparked a lot of debate, but the Steelers had the No. 1 seed hanging in the balance. The decision to keep Roethlisberger in the game in the fourth quarter when there was little hope for victory provided more questions for coach Mike Tomlin regarding the use of his star quarterback and his long-term planning for the playoffs."
Big Ben scoffs at suggestions he needed painkillers
"Ben Roethlisberger said he didn't take any painkilling injections before playing through a high-ankle sprain in a 20-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. "We heard that (ESPN analyst) Steve Young and those guys say that before pre-game, 'Oh, he'll go shoot it up.' No we don't do that," Roethlisberger said. "They would never put me out there and endanger me or anybody on this team. There was no injection there was two Tylenols and two Advil." That Roethlisberger took anything stronger for the pain caused by he injury to hs left ankle was a source of contention in a quiet Steelers' locker room. As he wrapped Roethlisberger's foot before the veteran quarterback talked to"
Roethlisberger will start against 49ers
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is expected to start tonight against the San Francisco 49ers -- and the decision had nothing to with the Baltimore Ravens' loss Sunday night in San Diego that put the Steelers back in control of the AFC North Division. The Steelers reached the decision to start Roethlisberger before the Ravens' 34-14 loss to the Chargers, which means the Steelers win the division title and get a first-round playoff bye if they win their remaining three games."
Big Ben's status is uncertain
"The Steelers will be without center Maurkice Pouncey Monday night in San Francisco, but whether Ben Roethlisberger will be the one taking snaps from Doug Legursky is still a mystery. Roethlisberger had limited participation in Saturday's and Friday's practices and is listed as questionable on the team's official injury report. Pouncey is out. Both sustained Grade I left high ankle sprains in the second quarter of a 14-3 win Dec. 8 against Cleveland. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said earlier in the week that if Roethlisberger cannot play, Charlie Batch will start at quarterback."
Steelers' Roethlisberger still questionable
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger didn't favor his injured left ankle as much during Saturday's practice as he did earlier this week. However, he is listed as questionable for Monday night's game at San Francisco. While there's a 50 percent chance Roethlisberger will be in the lineup despite a high ankle sprain, center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle sprain) is among three players who will sit out a game in which the Steelers can clinch a playoff spot with a victory at Candlestick Park. In addition, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (foot) and outside linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring) will sit. Sanders will miss his fourth game in six weeks, while Carter is out for the third straight week."
Pouncey out, Roethlisberger questionable for Monday
"Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has been ruled out of Monday night's game in San Francisco and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is questionable, both because of left high ankle sprains. Both players sustained their injuries in the second quarter of last Thursday's 14-3 win over Cleveland. Doug Legursky will start in place of Pouncey; Roethlisberger was limited in practice yesterday and yesterday and today. Saftey Troy Polamalu (hamstring) was a full participant in Saturday's practice and is listed as probable, as is right tackle Marcus Gilbert."
Roethlisberger questionable, Pouncey out against San Francisco
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger didn't favor his injured left ankle as much today as he has much of this week, but he's listed as questionable for Monday night's game at San Francisco. While there's a 50 percent chance Roethelisberger will be in the lineup despite a high ankle sprain, center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle sprain) is among three players who will sit out a game in which the Steelers (10-3) can clinch a playoff spot with a victory at Candlestick Park. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (foot) and outside linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring) will sit. Safety Troy Polamalu has been limited in practice some by a sore hamstring and is listed as probable along with offensive tackle Marcus"
Roethlisberger unlikely to hurt 49ers
"Admit it, fretting 49ers fans, you've been playing the scenario in your head since last Thursday. You know, the one in which Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, his left ankle bandaged as if he has just emerged from the Battle of Bull Run, somehow limps into Monday's game and heroically leads his team to dramatic and glorious victory. Oh, how the Terrible Towels will wave. Oh, how the national media will swoon and say Big Ben is braver than Willis Reed, tougher than William Wallace and more selfless than Mother Teresa. Oh, how Roethlisberger – he loves this kind of drama – will bask in the attention. And you? You'll stew and seethe and tell everyone at work Tuesday morning that you"
Roethlisberger 'limited participant' in Friday practice
"The Steelers listed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as a limited participant in practice Friday. He didn't practice Thursday. Roethlisberger is nursing a high-ankle sprain, and coach Mike Tomlin has said he needs to practice at least once, if only in a limited capacity, to play Monday night in San Francisco. The Steelers hold their final practice of the week today. Roethlisberger was not in the Steelers' locker room yesterday while it was open to reporters. He availability Monday could be a game-time decision. • Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey, who also is nursing a high-ankle sprain, did not practice yesterday. Also missing practice for a second consecutive day were strong safety Troy"
Big Ben is a game-time decision for Steelers
"The most talked about ankle in Pittsburgh has been soaked in hot and cold tubs. It has been massaged, and on Thursday, it got fitted for a custom-made brace that will provide support and protection if Ben Roethlisberger is able to play in San Francisco. The one thing the Steelers quarterback hasn't done to ensure that he suits up for Monday night's key game is suspend time. And that is one thing even beyond his reach, no matter how superhuman Roethlisberger looked in returning from injury to lead the Steelers to a 14-3 win over the Browns last Thursday. Despite making what Roethlisberger called "big progress" since sustaining the first high-ankle sprain of his career, the Steelers may not"
Tomlin in bind over Big Ben's ankle injury
"Mike Tomlin has another one of those decisions that fall only in the lap of a head coach -- whether to play quarterback Ben Roethlisberger Monday night in San Francisco. Roethlisberger said he will do everything he can to play and, indeed, his left ankle temporarily was put in a cast Thursday. The cast was then removed, and it will be used as a mold for a New Jersey company to make a plastic brace. He would wear the brace in practice and, the Steelers hope, in the game against the 49ers. Tomlin's decision is threefold: a. Will Roethlisberger be able to perform well enough to help his team? b. Can he move on his feet well enough to protect himself by warding off a potential killer hit? c."
Steelers could just activate Dixon as third QB
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is listed as questionable for Monday's game at San Francisco with a high-ankle sprain. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday he'll consider activating Dennis Dixon as a third quarterback if Roethlisberger is unable to practice this week. "Obviously, if we go into this game with Ben less than 100 percent, three quarterbacks is a potential option," Tomlin said. "We'll get all our quarterbacks ready. If he's going to play, he's going to practice. "As we get closer to situational football, everyone who's going to be a participant needs reps. Right now, we're trying to get him as healthy as possible on a day-to-day basis." Tomlin dismissed the possibility of"
Roethlisberger, Pouncey have mildest form of ankle sprains
"Ben Roethlisberger and Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey have been diagnosed with high-ankle sprains that could have turned out a lot worse. Pouncey said his sprain is not nearly as bad as the one that kept him out of Super Bowl XLV and expects to play Monday night in San Francisco. Roethlisberger and Pouncey each have Grade 1 ankle sprains -- the least damaging type of sprain (Grade 3 is the most severe). But, unlike Pouncey, who was injured in the second quarter against the Cleveland Browns and did not return, Roethlisberger returned to the game in the second half. Pouncey made the same "I will play" declaration before the Super Bowl, even though the coaches and trainers knew he wasn't"
Pouncey says he and Roethlisberger will play in San Francisco
"High ankle sprains won`t keep quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and center Maurkice Pouncey from playing next Monday night when the Steelers visit San Francisco. That is what Pouncey said following the Steelers` first practice since a 14-3 win over the Browns last Thursday night. Both Roethlisberger and Pouncey got hurt in the game, and only Roethlisberger returned from his ankle injury. "We`re both fine," Pouncey said. "We`ll be alright to go on Monday Night Football." Roethlisberger, who has a walking boot on his left foot, was at Steelers` headquarters today but he did not attend practice. Pouncey had been in a walking boot, but he said today that his left ankle has progressed to the point"
Big Ben's Magnificent Seven
"Sometimes I wonder if the Big Ben-is-the-toughest-quarterback-alive storyline gets overblown. Philip Rivers played through a torn ACL in a playoff game. Tony Romo shrugged off fractured ribs and a collapsed lung to beat San Francisco this season. Most quarterbacks are tough. It's a job requirement. Then again, I'm not sure many have thrived amid the sort of year-in, year-out punishment Roethlisberger endures, largely on account of his swashbuckler style. He has now been sacked 309 times (career, not this season). Yet, he refuses to alter his approach. Isn't that part of what you love about him?"
Big Ben's injury hurt at goal line
"Ben Roethlisberger's inability to run and move out of the pocket limited the Steelers on their failed, four-play goal-line series Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns. Rashard Mendenhall was stopped on four consecutive running plays, beginning at the Browns 2, but the Steelers had a pass play called on third down. Roethlisberger, however, checked off to a run because the Browns overloaded their coverage to the right side of the field where the pass was intended. Complicating matters further was Roethlisberger's inability to execute any of the play-action bootleg plays the Steelers planned to use near the goal line because he couldn't run. "I think it restricted us, even on third"
Ailing Big Ben strikes in Pittsburgh Steelers' hour of need
"The tattoo along the side of his foot just beneath Ben Roethlisberger's injured left ankle reads, "Psalm 37:34." One translation of the biblical verse is, "Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand." It was, it turns out, prophetic for the Steelers quarterback in Pittsburgh's 14-3 victory. He stumbled with 5:59 left in the first half when he was sacked by Browns defensive linemen Scott Paxson and Brian Schaefering. He fell, too, when Paxson popped Roethlisberger in his lower leg and it twisted awkwardly. "I thought my leg was broken, to be honest," Roethlisberger said afterward. "It's one of the most painful things I've ever felt. I felt like my foot was"
Roethlisberger returns after scary 1st-half injury
"The Steelers received a scare late in the second quarter Thursday night when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked and limped off the field with an ankle injury. Roethlisberger went to the locker room and did not reappear in the first half. He did, however, start the second half, albeit with a noticeable limp. Roethlisberger was sacked by Scott Paxson , a former Steeler, with 5:59 to go before halftime. His left ankle turned as he was being brought to the ground. "I thought my leg was broken," he said. "My ankle felt like it was going to explode.""
Hobbled Roethlisberger leads Steelers to 14-3 victory over Browns
"In some ways it resembled a Browns-Steelers game of yesteryear. Defense reigned in a slugfest that knocked both starting quarterbacks out. Both returned. Colt McCoy had the last turnover and Ben Roethlisberger the last laugh. The Steelers prevailed, 14-3, for their 15th win in the last 16 meetings and 21st in 23. The Browns dropped to 4-9. The Steelers inched into first place in the AFC North with a 10-3 record."
Roethlisberger hurt in the second quarter
"Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger limped off the field and into the locker room with 5:59 left in the second quarter after he was sacked. It appeared that Roethlisberger's left knee was injured. Former Steelers defensive lineman Scott Paxson, a backup defensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns, tackled Roethlisberger low after the quarteback rolled to his right and could not find an open receiver."
Bengals' Lewis: Roethlisberger playing at MVP-type level
"The Bengals sacked Ben Roethlisberger five times the last time the teams played three weeks ago. They could have used a couple of more. While the Bengals got consistent pressure on the Pittsburgh quarterback throughout the game, Roethlisberger escaped enough times and extended enough plays with his feet before finishing them off with his arm to help the Steelers pull out a 24-17 win on Nov. 13 at Paul Brown Stadium. That's the Roethlisberger Bengals' head coach Marvin Lewis has said is playing at an MVP-type level. That's the Roethlisberger the Bengals (7-4) are going to have to contain if they are to beat the Steelers (8-3) at Heinz Field Sunday. Roethlisberger has completed 245-of-385"
Big Ben's broken thumb begets adjustments
"Unorthodox handoffs and some snaps from a formation that isn't used very often. Those are adjustments Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers might make as the star quarterback plays the rest of the season with a broken right thumb. Roethlisberger threw Monday for the first time since getting hurt in a Nov. 13 game at Cincinnati. The only thing he could say definitively following practice is that the injury won't keep him from playing Sunday night in Kansas City. "It hurts first off just to grip the ball. It's something you've got to get used to," Roethlisberger said of the injury on his throwing hand. "Coach (Mike Tomlin) told me not to throw (yesterday), but I was like, 'I want some snaps, I"
Roethlisberger has a grip on latest injury
"The author of one of the most famous tackles by a quarterback in NFL history has advice for others playing his position on trying to tackle an opponent. "Hopefully, you don't have to make a tackle, that's the first problem," said Ben Roethlisberger. That only happens on turnovers and after Chicago's Jay Cutler threw an interception Sunday, he tried to tackle San Diego's Antoine Cason and came up with a broken thumb instead. Cutler will have surgery on his right thumb and Bears coach Lovie Smith said he should return before the playoffs -- assuming Chicago qualifies."
