Royals reach one-year deal with Gordon for $4.775 million
February 10
Kansas City Star
"
Left fielder Alex Gordon preceded his 28th birthday Thursday afternoon by taking what could be the first step to a long-term relationship with the Royals. The two sides reached agreement on a one-year contract for $4.775 million, which eliminates the need for an arbitration hearing Feb. 16 in Tampa, Fla., and clears the path for renewed talks on a multi-year contract. "They know they have me for two (more) years," Gordon said. "So do we. I think both sides just want to think it through and get things right — like we did with the one-year deal. We're not trying to rush things, and I think that's how it's been so far."

Royals, Gordon settle on $4.775 million pact

"
The Royals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with outfielder Alex Gordon on Thursday, thus taking care of all of their unsigned arbitration-eligible players. Gordon, who's two years away from free agency, will make $4.775 million in 2012, with a $25,000 bonus if he reaches 700 plate appearances, according to MLB.com's Dick Kaegel. The No. 2 overall Draft pick in 2005, Gordon finally broke out last season, batting .303 with 23 homers, 87 RBIs and 17 stolen bases while winning the American League Gold Glove Award in left field.

Gordon, Royals appear close on one-year deal
February 7
Kansas City Star
"
The Royals appear close to an agreement with left fielder Alex Gordon on a one-year contract that would eliminate the need for a Feb. 16 arbitration hearing in Tampa, Fla. Gordon, who turns 28 on Friday, filed an arbitration request for $5.45 million, while the club countered at $4.15 million. Gordon made $1.4 million last season when he produced a breakout offensive season and won a Gold Glove for defensive excellence. Major League labor rules permit the two sides to reach a negotiated settlement until an arbitration ruling is announced. The arbitrator must select one of the two submitted figures.

Alex Gordon hearing date approaching

"
It's now 12 days and counting until left fielder Alex Gordon and the Royals are scheduled to head to an arbitration hearing on Feb. 16. The two sides exchanged figures on Jan. 17. Gordon is believed to have asked for $5.45 million, while the Royals countered at $4.15 million. Both parties can agree to a settlement up until the point in which the arbitrator issues a ruling. But the Feb. 16 date — four days before pitchers and catchers report to spring training — could also serve as a soft deadline if the club wants to work out an oft-discussed long-term extension for Gordon. Late last week, Gordon told The Star that the two sides had continued communication, and Royals general manager

Royals need to get long-term deal done with Alex Gordon

Alex Gordon did not get a long-term contract on Tuesday, instead merely processing through baseball's standard arbitration process with the Royals, which means one more day that's gone with each side missing an opportunity that isn't coming back. Right now, today, is the best environment the Royals will have to sign their reigning player of the year to a long-term deal. And right now, today, is the best environment Gordon will have to ensure his family a few generations worth of financial security by signing to stay in the only place he's ever wanted to play. In other words: Get this done. Like, now.

Royals left fielder Gordon wins Gold Glove
November 2
Kansas City Star
"
Royals left fielder Alex Gordon reaped another reward from a breakthrough season Tuesday night when he received a Gold Glove in recognition for his defensive excellence. Gordon was picked as the American League's best defensive left fielder in a vote by managers and coaches announced in a live telecast on ESPN2. The other finalists were Brett Gardner of the New York Yankees and Sam Fuld of the Tampa Bay Rays. "I'm thrilled," said Gordon, who led the majors with a club-record 20 assists. "I couldn't be happier about the award. I have a lot of people to thank. "It would have been nice to see my teammate, Frenchy (Jeff Francoeur), win it with me. But just to have both of us up for the award

Outfielders Alex Gordon and Jeff Francoeur – but not shortstop Alcides Escobar – are among the American League finalists to receive Gold Gloves for defensive excellence when Rawlings announces this year's winners at 9 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN2. The awards date to 1957 and are determined through a vote by managers and coaches in each league. The procedure changed this year to select a recipient for each outfield position instead of simply choosing three outfielders. A list of three finalists for each position is also being announced for the first time.

Left fielder Alex Gordon reaped another reward for a breakthrough season Monday afternoon when he was selected as the Royals' nominee for the Hank Aaron Award, which seeks to recognize the most outstanding offensive performer in each league. Fans can help determine the winner in an online vote at mlb.com that continues through Sunday. Their choice will be part of the selection process, which includes a panel of Hall of Fame players chosen by Hank Aaron.

Royals rap out 18 hits in 9-5 win over Tigers

"
Alex Gordon set the tone Monday night by opening the game with a home run. And, aside from a few tense moments, it was pretty much all Royals thereafter in a 9-5 victory over first-place Detroit at Comerica Park. Gordon matched a career high with four hits, and he had a lot of company in an 18-hit attack that did much of its damage against Tigers starter Max Scherzer, a former Missouri All-American. "We put some good swings on the ball early," second baseman Johnny Giavotella said. "Gordo got us started off with the home run, and we were able to follow him up with a bunch of runs after that." Salvador Perez had three hits, including his first big-league homer on a monster shot to center

Left fielder Alex Gordon confirmed he shares the Royals' interest in discussing a multi-year contract once the season concludes. "Staying here?" he said. "Heck, yeah. I love it here. I love the guys here. I love being close to home. I love the fans. I love everything about this place." General manager Dayton Moore previously characterized a long-term deal with Gordon as "something we'll look at" once the season concludes. Gordon said Moore repeated that message to his agent in a recent conversation. "My agent came through and talked with Dayton," Gordon said. "They communicated that they want to wait until the season is over and go from there." Gordon, at 27, is putting together a

After a day off because of some discomfort in his foot, Royals outfielder Alex Gordon found himself back in the starting lineup Tuesday — and in a different spot. Gordon, who has spent the last month hitting third or fourth, batted leadoff for the first time since June 21. Royals manager Ned Yost said previously that he prefers Gordon in the middle of the lineup somewhere, but he also likes some power at the top of the lineup. "We need a little more pop out of the one (hole)," Yost said. "Your 1-2-3-4-5 guys get your most at-bats over the course of the game, and I wanted Gordo at the top of that order. I like what he did before (there)." Gordon has arguably been the Royals' best player

The push to send Royals left fielder Alex Gordon to the All-Star Game fell short Thursday when Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko gained the last spot on the American League team through the Final Vote competition. "I was just happy to be up for it," Gordon said. "Maybe next year. It was fun. It was good to see the support from my teammates, especially Ned and the coaches. They were really pushing for me." Detroit catcher/designated hitter Victor Martinez finished second, followed by Gordon, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones and Tampa Bay utilityman Ben Zobrist.

Final Vote push for Alex Gordon enters its final hours

The campaign to get Royals left fielder Alex Gordon to the All-Star Game through the Final Vote election culminates Thursday when the online-balloting process ends at 3 p.m. Gordon remained third in the balloting in the latest update from Major League Baseball, which inexplicably refuses to release vote totals. That not only raises integrity issues; it also creates uncertainty for all concerned. The Royals are, nonetheless, seeking to mount a closing push for Gordon in the closing hours in an effort to overtake Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko and Detroit catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez for the final spot on the American League roster. Several teammates are pushing Gordon's

Alex Gordon returns to KC lineup after missing a game
July 6

"
Left fielder Alex Gordon returned Tuesday night to the Royals' starting lineup after missing just one game because of a bruised knee suffered Sunday when hit by a pitch in Colorado. "It's still swollen," he said. "So it's a little stiff, but there's no pain, and it doesn't restrict me from doing anything. Probably if I banged it again against something it might hurt, but it's fine." Gordon showed no problem in moving around the outfield at U.S. Cellular Field, but he went hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts in the Royals' 5-3 victory over the White Sox. "I was swinging at a lot of pitches out of the zone," he said. "Maybe I just wasn't seeing it that great. If we had lost, I'd be

It didn't take long for the Royals to crank up their "Vote Gordo" campaign in an effort to secure a spot for left fielder Alex Gordon on the American League team for the All-Star Game on July 12 at Arizona. The official All-Star announcement show wasn't yet over Sunday morning on TBS when teammates Mitch Maier and Jeff Francoeur, soon joined by others, were sporting T-shirts with "Vote Gordo" applied with a Sharpie. "I'm going to rig it until we get real ones made," Maier said. "I'm going to go out for a (pregame) jog and try to get some Rockies fans to vote for Gordo." That brought a hoot from Billy Butler: "I've never seen him take a jog all season." Maier parried: "Right, but I didn't

Gordon has evolved from Royal bummer to beloved All-Star cause

"
Alex Gordon began his professional baseball career as a phenom. You remember that. People talked about a left-handed hitting third baseman who grew up going to Royals games and by the time George Brett said he was honored by the comparison, well, the hype would not stop. Gordon quickly became a bust. You remember that, too. He struck out and got hurt and booted grounders and then went to Omaha to learn a new position and make room for the next phenom. That began the next phase of Gordon's career, the Whipping Boy Years, because Royals fans have deep scars and are by now used to seeing can't-miss prospects miss. So Gordon became the butt of jokes, the object of scorn, forgotten and damaged

Crow picked for All-Star Game; Gordon among 5 hopefuls for last AL roster spot

Royals rookie reliever Aaron Crow got two shocks before Sunday's series finale against the Colorado. First was manager Ned Yost's announcement, in a team meeting, that Crow had been selected to the American League squad for the All-Star Game on July 12 at Arizona. "I couldn't believe it at first," Crow said. "It's something that everyone dreams about having the opportunity to do. But only a few lucky people get the opportunity." The second jolt came a few moments later when Crow called home. "My dad usually can't shut up," he said. "But when I called him, he had just seen it on TV, and he was speechless. He couldn't say anything. It was nice to have him react that way." The Royals have a

Left fielder Alex Gordon is the people's choice, and by an overwhelming margin, as the Royals' player who most deserves selection to the American League team for the All-Star Game on July 12 in Arizona. Gordon received 37 percent of the 4,481 votes cast over a 10-day period ending at noon Thursday in an online poll conducted by The Kansas City Star. Rookie reliever Aaron Crow placed second, followed by shortstop Alcides Escobar. "It's a great gesture and pretty humbling," Gordon said. "There are a lot of guys who will be up for it, and I'm glad I'm included. I'm happy the fans chose me. That's pretty cool." The actual All-Star selections will be announced at 11 a.m. Sunday on TBS. Alex Gordon solidifies role as Royals' leadoff hitter

Alex Gordon is "trying to act like I'm a leadoff guy" since inheriting that role May 18. He's deliberately taking more pitches and even dropping down a bunt on occasion in efforts to jump-start the Royals' attack. "I've had my ups and downs," Gordon said Tuesday prior to the start of a three-game series against Oakland at newly-renamed O.co Coliseum. "I definitely haven't been perfect at it, but my main goal is just to try to get on and give these guys a chance to drive me in." The numbers are generally positive. Gordon was batting .284 when manager Ned Yost made the switch. He also had a .339 on-base percentage and a .452 slugging percentage — solid overall numbers – but the trends were

Alex Gordon gets comfortable as leadoff hitter

The last six games aren't the only time when circumstances resulted in Royals left fielder Alex Gordon batting leadoff. There was also a stretch of games in junior high school when opposing teams simply refused to pitch to him. "So they had me bat first," he recalled, "to get more plate appearances to get on base more through walks." The current circumstances couldn't be more different. Manager Ned Yost made the switch when his attack lapsed into an extended funk after leading the American League in numerous offensive categories, including batting and runs scored, through the season's early weeks. "We were scuffling," Gordon said, "and when he said he was going to do it, I thought, `Yeah,

Yost gives slumping Alex Gordon a break
May 12
Kansas City Star
"
The circumstances pointed to Wednesday as a logical time for the Royals to rest slumping left fielder Alex Gordon, who had just five hits in 31 at-bats since the calendar turned to May. The Yankees started right-hander A.J. Burnett, who had limited Gordon to two hits in 15 previous matchups. So Gordon sat. Jarrod Dyson started in center field, while Melky Cabrera shifted from center to left. "I'm not swinging as well as I was earlier," Gordon admitted, "but I sat down with (hitting coach Kevin) Seitzer, and my swing is fine. It's just a matter of getting back to picking out the right pitches to swing at." It was Seitzer who suggested to manager Ned Yost that a day off could benefit Gordon,

Alex Gordon enjoying his early-season success
April 18

Baseball is fun again for Alex Gordon. That's the best explanation available for his fast start to the season. Dubbed a can't-miss prospect and the savior of a franchise, Gordon struggled the last two seasons but is showing glimmers of the promise that made him the No. 2 pick in the 2005 draft. Most importantly, he's enjoying it. "I'm feeling more comfortable, because I'm not hurt or changing positions and getting sent up and down," Gordon said. "But this clubhouse is the best it's been in a while. It started in spring training, but guys are just having fun and staying relaxed, playing for each other." Entering Sunday, Gordon led the league in hits (22), runs (14) and doubles (eight). He

Has Gordon finally figured it out? Even he isn't sure
April 12

It remains the most intriguing question on a team brimming more than ever with intriguing questions after an encouraging 6-3 start. Has Alex Gordon finally figured it out? More specifically, does he think he's figured it out after four inconsistent, injury-filled and, yes, often disappointing seasons with the Royals? The question prompts a pause. "I don't know," Gordon said, finally. "I just feel good right now. I'm happy with that. I'm feeling comfortable. I'll say that. I feel a lot better than in the last couple of years. That's for sure — a lot better in confidence and health." That confidence gained a major boost near the conclusion of a strong spring training when manager Ned Yost

Jeff Francoeur jumped so high he banged his head on the dugout roof. Tim Collins felt a rush inside his chest and started to celebrate. Mike Aviles watched the ball past third base and still thought it was fair, still thought the ball would hook around the left-field foul pole — a walk-off home run for Alex Gordon on opening day, and what a story that would've made. Gordon came this close to being the baseball hero. Instead, bupkis. A few feet the other way, and the tone of this column and the spirit of baseball fans all over town would have been filled with the kind of hope that Kansas City usually sees only from a distance. Instead, he struck out two pitches later, the final out of the

Alex Gordon continued his spring surge Saturday afternoon with three hits and six RBIs in leading the Royals to a 19-7 clubbing of a Los Angeles Dodgers split squad at Surprise Stadium. Gordon had a two-run single in a four-run third inning and an RBI double in a six-run fourth before unloading a mammoth three-run homer in the seventh. The homer flew into a party tent beyond the grass berm beyond the right-field bullpen. "It felt good," Gordon said. "The wind makes it fly here in Arizona, but it felt good." The Royals, 10-5-1, had a 20-hit attack. Clint Robinson and Manny Piña hit two-run homers, while Melky Cabrera added two hits and three RBIs to his sizzling spring.

Despite his struggles, fans still believe in Royals' Gordon

The rock star — in these parts, at least — entered the large, gray building as night descended. His long day on the Royals' caravan was almost over. Inside the Ultimate Baseball Academy, more than 300 Nebraskans had waited patiently, with balls and gloves and pictures. While a couple of other notable Royals were also signing autographs on this night last week, most people were there for the man wearing the No. 4 Royals jersey, the Nebraska boy once destined to become the next big thing. So it was only appropriate, really, that upon walking inside, Alex Gordon immediately saw his mother, Leslie, who greeted him with a smile and a hug. This, he could tell, was home. Alex Gordon expects 'to dominate next year'
September 22

Alex Gordon is already putting down a marker for next year as this season — a transition season that saw him switch from third base to left field — winds through the final two weeks. "I'm going to dominate next year," he vowed, "I can tell you that. Not that this year is over, but I'm going to dominate next year." The words, as always with Gordon, come quietly. And, yes, he knows his production this year, or throughout his four-year career, offers little to support what, for him, is a rare proclamation. Gordon has six homers and just 16 RBIs in 52 games since returning from Class AAA Omaha. He also has 45 strikeouts in 203 plate appearances while batting .233 with a .325 on-base

Alex Gordon produced a clutch ninth-inning hit Tuesday for the second time in five days in helping the Royals find a way, finally, to beat the Oakland A's. Gordon's leadoff double led to the winning run in a 3-2 victory at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The A's had won all four previous games this season between the two teams. "Alex is really swinging the bat well," manager Ned Yost said. "He's doing fine in the outfield and having good at-bats." The Royals built leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before handing a 3-2 lead to Joakim Soria in the ninth inning. Soria worked a one-two-three inning for his 30th save in 32 opportunities. If Alex Gordon succeeds in resurrecting what was once viewed as immense potential - and wouldn't that be nice? - then remember what happened Friday night at Kauffman Stadium. Gordon reversed a miserable evening, for himself and the Royals, with a dramatic three-run homer that produced a 7-5 walk-off victory over the Baltimore Orioles. "At first, I kind of knew (it was out)," Gordon said, "but I've been having some bad luck. I was just hoping someone wasn't going to jump over the fence and catch it. It seemed like I got around the bases pretty quickly." Gordon had just four hits in 28 previous at-bats in his seven games since returning from Class AAA Omaha. He was also hitless in four

The early word on Alex Gordon's transition to the outfield from the man who makes first-person reports to Royals general manager Dayton Moore: Wow. Asked to elaborate, Rusty Kuntz offered, "more than wow" after spending the last week at Class AAA Omaha primarily to accelerate Gordon's learning curve in making the move from third base. "Finally, I can compare him to somebody," said Kuntz, a special assistant to the general manager whose specialties include coaching the organization's outfielders. Alex Gordon isn't just heading to Class AAA Omaha to regain his hitting form. The Royals also want him to concentrate on learning to play left field while also logging time at first base. "We're not completely taking third base away from him," manager Trey Hillman said, "but we really want him to work on playing left field. He'll also see some time at first base but, mainly, I think it will be left field." The Royals optioned Gordon to Omaha after Sunday's 1-0 loss at Tampa Bay. He departed with a .194 average through 12 games following his return from the disabled list after recovering from a broken right thumb. Life changes for Gordon and Aviles

"
Here we go with the first week of the rest of Alex Gordon's life as a professional baseball player. He is yesterday's hotshot third baseman, today's minor-league outfielder and tomorrow? That's the $5 million question, which is what Gordon has made so far while being hyped up, then brought up and for the moment chewed up by the major-league baseball machine. His future now depends on whether he's been used up. "The best thing for our long-term is for him to get some regular time and just play and hit," Royals general manager Dayton Moore says. And here we go with the first week of Mike Aviles' next shot as a big-league baseball player. He is yesterday's club player of the year, today's

Gordon sent to Omaha; Aviles recalled

It made no sense, the Royals finally decided, to keep third baseman Alex Gordon buried on their bench. That conclusion prompted Sunday's decision to option Gordon to Class AAA Omaha where, presumably, he can get regular playing time. Infielder Mike Aviles will replace Gordon on the big-league roster. The move came after manager Trey Hillman left little doubt before Sunday's 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay that he views Alberto Callaspo and Chris Getz as the regulars at third base and second base. Gordon did not start any of the last three games after Getz returned Friday from the disabled list. Plus, Gordon had just six hits in 31 at-bats in 12 games, also since returning from the disabled list.

With Getz nearing return, Gordon's time on big-league roster appears in jeopardy

It isn't only the bullpen where the Royals find themselves playing musical chairs in regard to their roster. The lineup is about to start its own game once second baseman Chris Getz returns from the disabled list. All signs point to that happening Friday, when he is eligible to return, or shortly thereafter. "I think we're pretty much in the clear in terms of the injury," Getz said. "It's pretty much healed. Now, it's just, (I've) got to wait out the rest of the DL time. I think the plan is do some rehab games next week." Tentative plans call Getz to start a brief minor-league rehab assignment Monday at Class AAA Omaha. He cleared a major hurdle Friday when he experienced no problems in

Gordon's homer lifts Royals to 4-3 victory over Toronto in 10 innings

OK, it was dramatic. It didn't need to be. It probably shouldn't have been. But, hey, the Royals sure needed it. Alex Gordon's two-out homer in the 10th inning Wednesday afternoon rescued the Royals in a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. It did, to be precise, after Joakim Soria set down the Jays in their half of the 10th for his fourth save. And if the Royals needed something good collectively, perhaps nobody needed something good personally more than Gordon, whose time in the big leagues might hinge on his production while Chris Getz recovers from a strained right oblique. Gordon had struck out twice in three at-bats prior to his homer. In the seventh inning,

Third baseman Alex Gordon's return from a broken right thumb continues on schedule. Gordon was assigned on Tuesday to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment with the Royals' Class A club at Wilmington, Del. He'll join the Blue Rocks on Thursday for a game at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Injured on March 6 in a Cactus League game in Surprise, Ariz., Gordon was expected to be able to play by around Opening Day, which for the Royals, was on Monday. Now, a month after the injury, he appears to be ready.

A headfirst slide is actually faster

Royals manager Trey Hillman was succinct. When asked by reporters whether there is a time when it's advisable for a player to make a headfirst slide, Hillman answered: "None. Zero. Never." Hillman made his comments while talking about third baseman Alex Gordon, who broke his thumb Saturday on a headfirst slide. However, David A. Peters, the McDonnell Douglas Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, might disagree. Peters first stated in 2008 that the headfirst slide is faster than the feetfirst slide. There are three important mathematical issues at play on a slide. "There's momentum - mass of the body times how fast the player is moving," he said in a news release.

Royals' Gordon out 3-4 weeks because of broken thumb

Even Alex Gordon realizes he deserves this latest setback, at least partially, because he chose to slide headfirst into second base Saturday on an attempted steal. That doesn't make it any easier to swallow. "I'm pretty tired today," Gordon said quietly Sunday morning as he stood in front of his locker in the Royals' clubhouse at Surprise Stadium. "I didn't get much sleep. Coming off the injury and now having this … (stinks)." Gordon suffered a broken right thumb on the play — technically a minimally displaced fracture. Recovery time is initially pegged at three to four weeks for a return to full baseball activities. "It's unfortunate because it didn't have to happen," manager Trey Hillman

Third baseman Alex Gordon and pitcher Lenny DiNardo are the latest reinforcements to join the Royals for the season's closing run. Both arrived Tuesday, one day after Class AAA Omaha completed its 64-80 season. O-Royals manager Mike Jirschele will join the big-league coaching staff before Wednesday's game. The staff has been down one member since Eddie Rodriguez departed in late August to serve as manager of the United States team in the World Cup. DiNardo immediately joins the rotation as the starter for Thursday's series finale against Detroit at Kauffman Stadium. He was 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 29 games, including 23 starts, at Omaha. "Real good (reports)," manager Trey Hillman said. "He

Third baseman Alex Gordon is heading to the minors to rebuild his swing, his season and perhaps his career. The Royals optioned Gordon to Class AAA Omaha prior to Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The move cleared space for reliever Kyle Farnsworth's return from the disabled list. "It's an opportunity for him to regain his sense of timing offensively and his rhythm defensively," general manager Dayton Moore said. "It gives him a chance to do that in Triple-A where it's not as fast." The demotion represents the latest setback in a forgettable season for Gordon, who was once viewed as the cornerstone to the franchise's latest rebuilding effort. He returned

Gordon's hip injury likely to heal better than A-Rod's

There are some key differences between baseball's second-most talked about hip surgery and its first, so when evaluating Alex Gordon's rehab, it's probably best to forget about Alex Rodriguez's. Most notably, the tear in Gordon's right hip labrum is from a trauma, as opposed to Rodriguez's, which is more of a chronic problem. The good news: that means Gordon's injury is likely to heal better than Rodriguez's. "It's the difference between a car accident and wearing out your hip," said John Dougherty, a specialist in sports medicine at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, who has performed more than 200 surgeries similar to Gordon's. "It's better to have the car accident,

Third baseman Alex Gordon is doing well in his rehabilitation from surgery on his right hip, Royals manager Trey Hillman reported on Thursday. Hillman talked recently to Gordon, who is recovering in Vail, Colo., where he underwent surgery last Friday. "He was in pretty good spirits, other than the fact that he'd rather be here playing," Hillman said. About three or four hours after surgery, doctors had Gordon on an exercise bike to get the blood flowing in an aggressive program for recovery.

Royals' Gordon will have hip surgery; earliest return is weeks away

The Royals' chances this season depended on a list of things to go their way, including a breakout season from Alex Gordon. They know they won't get that now, not for a while, at least. Gordon will undergo surgery this morning to repair a tear in his right hip labrum. The labrum is a piece of cartilage attached to the hip socket. The news confirmed the Royals' worst fears. Gordon first felt tightness after the season opener and came close to going on the disabled list early this week before trying to play through the pain. There won't be a timetable on Gordon's return until after the surgery, but Yankees star Alex Rodriguez is expected to have about a nine-week rehab after a similar

The Royals placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list Thursday afternoon with a tear in his right hip labral cartilage. Gordon is scheduled for surgery on Friday with Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo. Philippon is the doctor who performed surgery on Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez's injured hip. Gordon suffered the injury on Saturday while sliding into second base, and aggravated it later in the game while leaving the batter's box after hitting a double-play grounder. Gordon is batting just two for 22 with one home run so far this season. There is no timetable on Gordon's return until after the surgery.

As it turned out, Hillman decided he did need Butler off the bench. Butler pinch hit for left-handed Mike Jacobs in the eighth against Jose Veras and drew a walk that eventually scored the tying run (with pinch runner Tony Pena Jr.). Etc. Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon, who spent six seasons with the Royals, offered his opinion on the "new" Kauffman Stadium. "This stadium to me was always the best, even before the renovations," Damon said Saturday night. "Now, it's up there. I definitely have to be biased and say the new Yankee Stadium is the best out there, but I'd take Kansas City No. 2, hands down. "This place was a very great place to play. Royals notes: Gordon misses game because of sore hip

Already missing José Guillen, the Royals' lineup was without a second middle-of-the-order hitter Sunday as third baseman Alex Gordon rested because of a sore hip. "Day to day. That's the only update," Royals manager Trey Hillman said of Gordon. Gordon was removed in the sixth inning Saturday night. Hillman indicated that Gordon, who had moved up to the fifth spot in the batting order after Guillen went on the disabled list, had aggravated his hip sliding into second base early in the game and while later leaving the batter's box after grounding into a double play. His absence Sunday gave Mark Teahen the start at third base. Only six games into the season, Teahen has already started at

Add third baseman Alex Gordon to the growing list of Royals on the disabled list. The club placed Gordon on the 15-day list prior to Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. The move was expected after Gordon was diagnosed Friday with a torn right quadriceps muscle. The Royals replaced Gordon on the roster by activating infielder Alberto Callaspo from the disabled list. Callaspo was three for 16 in four games while on a rehab assignment at Class AAA Omaha. Callaspo started Saturday's game at second base, Gordon suffered the injury Thursday while making charging pickup and throw on a slow grounder in a 10-3 loss to Cleveland.
