Did Burrows score disallowed goal?
"Was it or wasn't it? When Alex Burrows raised his stick to signal a goal Friday, it appeared that the struggling Vancouver Canucks winger had pulled his club within a goal of the Dallas Stars. Not so. A video review disallowed the third-period effort in a 2-1 loss to end the club's three-game winning streak. Burrows was not impressed. "I kind of kicked it [puck] or threw it in front and the ref was behind me and probably thought [Marty] Turco had it in his glove because he was laying on his stomach," explained Burrows."
Schneider superb in losing cause for road-weary Canucks
"It could have been a Texas-sized barbecue with Cory Schneider served up as the main course Friday night. After all, the odds were stacked against the Vancouver Canucks prospect goaltender like slabs of meat on a hot grill. Not only had the Dallas Stars won eight of the previous 10 meetings between the clubs at American Airlines Arena, they had franchise cornerstones Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen back from injuries that had limited the veterans to five games this season. So, the goalie with nothing left to prove in the AHL knew he had everything to prove in the NHL with Andrew Raycroft resting and Roberto Luongo rehabbing a hairline rib fracture. And Schneider sent a message to himself, the ..."
Stars' Neal has groin injury
"James Neal tweaked a groin muscle Wednesday against the Calgary Flames, so he sat out Friday's game and is not expected to make the trip to Minnesota today for the second of back-to-back contests. It's part of the Dallas Stars' plan to be cautious with injuries this season. "We want to be sure," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "He could maybe play [today], but if he misses both games, then we don't play again until Thursday." Neal is the Stars' leading goal-scorer with nine and is on a seven-game point-scoring streak (six goals, four assists for 10 points in those games). He played the entire game against Calgary but was worn down by relentless checking from a physical Flames defense. ..."
Stars close out Canucks
"As re-tests go, you couldn't have had better timing for the Dallas Stars. On the heels of one of their hardest losses of the season, the Stars were faced with an almost identical game Friday against the Vancouver Canucks. And this time, they won. The Stars scored on the power play, defended on the penalty kill and kept a one-goal lead in a furious third period in a 2-1 victory at American Airlines Center. It was a huge statement for a Dallas team that allowed Calgary to score with 49 seconds remaining in regulation Wednesday in an overtime loss. "The attitude is the key, and whether it's learning to win or just understanding what it takes, I think tonight was a huge step, especially ..."
Patience is a virtue regarding young players
"As a lesson for all of us who are impatient with young players, I offer up today the curious case of Matt Carle. Drafted in the fourth round by San Jose in 2003, Carle went through the U.S. National Development program and three years at the University of Denver before being moved up to the NHL. He played on the Sharks for three seasons, and simply wasn't that good when given top-level responsibility. He's a skilled player who can lug the puck, but he had breakdowns in his own end, and proved a source of frustration for fans and coaches alike. So, the Sharks moved him to Tampa Bay in 2008 with Ty Wishart and a first-round pick for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich. Carle was clearly a big part ..."
Modano gets back on the ice for Stars
"Mike Modano just isn't used to this. Even in the later years of his career, he has been on the ice for most games. In the past two seasons, for example, he has played in 162 of 164 regular-season games. But after missing 13 games with a rib injury this season, Modano already has experienced the third-longest stretch in his career without hockey. In 18 full seasons, he has played 70 or more games in 16. This season, his maximum will be 69 if he plays in the rest of the Stars' games. "Whenever I've had injuries, they always seem to fall right so I don't miss that many games, but this one has been a tough one," Modano said. "You miss a whole month of the season, and you start to realize how ..."
Marc Crawford faces choices on Stars' lines
"With good health comes some tough choices for the Stars. Tough choices, but good choices, coach Marc Crawford said. Center Mike Modano has played one game this season because of a rib injury, and winger Jere Lehtinen has played two games because of assorted ailments. Both are expected to return to the lineup tonight against the Calgary Flames. That means two forwards have to come out of the lineup, and Crawford appears to be leaning toward keeping Brian Sutherby, Tom Wandell and Fabian Brunnstrom while scratching veterans Toby Petersen and Krys Barch. But the veteran bench boss, in his first season with the Stars, said the choice won't be easy. "It's good that there's competition, and I ..."

Dallas Stars coach juggles lines
"Stars coach Marc Crawford has been consistent in his line selections for the first 14 games of the season, going almost exclusively with the same top two lines every game. But two forwards are coming back from injuries, and the line of Brenden Morrow, Mike Ribeiro and Jamie Benn were a minus-5 in the last two games. So Crawford showed Monday in practice at Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney that he is open to some juggling this week."You can't have as many defensive miscues as we've been having and then say, 'I'm just going to keep rolling with it,' " Crawford said. "And we have three guys coming into our lineup if you count [Steve Ott], so we have great depth in our group, and that should be ..."

Grossman a big plus for Dallas Stars
"The validity of plus-minus as an important statistic is debated in many NHL circles. But if you're a defensive defenseman such as Nicklas Grossman, it's one of the few numbers that gives a good indication of how you're playing. "It is a big deal to me," said Grossman, who leads the Stars and is tied for fifth in the NHL at plus-9. "I'm not going to score a lot of points in the role I'm playing, so it's nice to have something to look at and say I'm doing things right." Plus-minus represents the goal differential when a player is on the ice. Power-plays goals aren't counted, because there is an advantage, so the statistic should reveal who is important in the biggest stat that matters - ..."
Ott's energy creates an immediate impact for Dallas Stars
"Steve Ott returned to the lineup Saturday after a two-game suspension, and his impact was felt immediately when he scored a power-play goal at the 3:31 mark of the first period. "He just brings energy and purpose, and those are things that are necessary," Stars coach Marc Crawford said before the game. "In a situation like this, with back-to-back games, he can give us a real boost." Ott said he knows one way to play, and that's with energy. So even though he was suspended not so much for an illegal low hit as because he was a repeat offender who put an opposing player in a dangerous situation, Ott said he must continue to push boundaries. "I just have to get as close as I can to the ..."
Predators vs. Stars: Go inside tonight's matchup between Nashville and Dallas.
"• Season series. Tied 1-1. • Stars player to watch. Heading into Friday's game against Florida, center Brad Richards had collected six points (two goals, four assists) in his past three games. • Stars player to dread. Left wing James Neal has five points (two goals, three assists) in two games against the Predators this season. • Stars injuries. RW Jere Lehtinen (intercostal muscle), G Marty Turco (flu-like symptoms) and C Mike Modano (ribs) are questionable. • Predators injuries. RW Martin Erat (lower body) is doubtful; C Jason Arnott (arm) and RW Jordin Tootoo (quadriceps) are out."
Panthers blow two leads but prevail in shootout
"Rostislav Olesz beat Dallas goalie Alex Auld with a backhanded flip shot in the third period, so when his name was called in the shootout, Olesz didn't think twice about making that move again. ``When Coach [Pete DeBoer] told me I was going second, I knew what I was going to do as I sat on the bench,'' he said with a smile. ``I knew it went in.'' Olesz's goal in the shootout was the difference as Florida beat the Stars 6-5 at AmericanAirlines Center. The goal by Olesz helped make the night memorable for Steve Reinprecht, whose first-period hat trick got the Panthers off to a great start. Olesz's goal clipped the goal cage and circled through. It was initially waved off, but the replay ..."
Reinprecht, Olesz lift Panthers past Stars
"After going scoreless in his first five games as a Panther, center Steven Reinprecht received "a tongue-lashing" over the phone from his biggest fan and critic, Paul in Edmonton. Otherwise known as his dad. "Nobody knows my game better than him," Reinprecht said. Ever since that conversation following the game against the Lightning, Reinprecht hasn't just returned to being the player he'd been. He's transformed into a scoring monster that no one could have envisioned. Reinprecht recorded the fastest hat trick in franchise history Friday night against the Stars, scoring three goals in a span of 5:11, the second and third in a span of 29 seconds. Still, the Panthers needed a shootout goal by ..."
Dallas Stars' Turco taking the weekend off with illness
"Marty Turco has flu-like symptoms, and that's enough for the Stars to be cautious. With the H1N1 virus a concern, Dallas sat Turco and brought in Matt Climie from the minors on an emergency basis to serve as backup goalie. "With the flight to Nashville [Friday night], and everything that's going on, you really don't want to take any chances," said Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. "We've seen teams in the league really battle against flu, and we want to stay on top of that." It's not expected that Turco has H1N1; in fact, he worked out at the morning skate Friday and looked just fine. Still, Alex Auld started against Florida on Friday. After tonight the Stars don't play again until Wednesday at ..."
Dallas Stars let Panthers pounce in 6-5 shootout loss
"There was much for a Stars fan to be concerned about Friday night in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers at American Airlines Center. There was the lack of success in the NHL tiebreaker, with Dallas now 0-for-4 in shootouts. There was the tendency to get into shootouts of both varieties. The Stars went to the extra period for the sixth time this season, and they were in a shooting gallery type of game for the third time in the last four outings. And there was an alarming concern about leaving the front of the net uncovered while Florida was jumping all over rebounds en route to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Stars coach Marc Crawford, in his 1,000th NHL game, chose to concern ..."
Dallas Stars coach finds perspective in the long journey to his 1,000th game
"The numbers don't seem to mean much to Marc Crawford. But the experiences behind the numbers, Crawford said, have shaped his life. When the new Stars coach walks behind the bench tonight to face the Florida Panthers, it will be his 1,000 career NHL regular-season game. He will become the 15th coach in history to reach that milestone. He said he sees it as an accomplishment built on a thousand moments. "I think everything you ever do contributes to who you are, and I'm very happy and proud of what I've been able to do in my career," Crawford said. "So whether it has been a good experience or a bad experience, hopefully, it's made me a better coach today." Crawford spoke those words last ..."
Dallas Stars' Mike Modano still holds an Olympic dream
"Mike Modano still has the Olympic dream. In what could be his final season in the NHL and his last chance at wearing Team USA colors, Modano realizes his time is precious. Sidelined by a rib injury since the first game of the season, Modano isn't putting together much of an audition tape. He missed Wednesday's game, a golden opportunity to perform before Toronto GM Brian Burke and coach Ron Wilson, who will serve in the same capacities for Team USA. "I haven't really talked to them, but I'm aware of them and I think they are aware of me," Modano said. "You figure that they'll be looking at plenty of tape." After getting speared in the season opener against Nashville, Modano rehabbed the ..."
Home ice heats up just in time in Dallas Stars' 4-3 overtime win
"It took a while for the Stars to shake the dust from American Airlines Center on Wednesday night. But once they did, the place looked pretty shiny. Battling to find some kind of rhythm on home ice, Dallas looked lost for half the game. But the Stars finally emerged with a 4-3 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The ending was frenetic, as James Neal shoveled in a rebound goal with 2:03 remaining in the extra period to give Dallas its first overtime win of the year. "Any tight game ... that's the type of hockey you want to play in the playoffs," said defenseman Stephane Robidas, who assisted on the game-winning goal. "They were trying to slow the game down, and we really ..."
What will Tom Hicks' next move with Dallas Stars be?
"Truth be told, nobody knows what owner Tom Hicks will do with the Stars. He might not even know. I was told by several people after last season that the expectation was that Les Jackson would return as GM and the coaching staff would return intact. Hicks felt otherwise. He made a bold move in hiring a new GM and coaching staff at a significant cost to the organization, and it appears he made the move pretty quietly and pretty much on his own. So when he says he wants to remain the owner of the Stars, I believe him. He likes this team. He wants this team to win, and he believes it can win and make money. That last part is important, and it should be. Owners can't be expected to just ..."
Stars' Ott suspended two games for 'low hit'
"Steve Ott's reputation as one of the more annoying players in the NHL is a source of pride for the Stars winger. His reputation as a "repeat offender," however, could become a source of concern for the Stars. On Tuesday, Ott was suspended two games for a "low hit" on St. Louis defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo in their game Saturday. Ott was coming across the middle of the ice, and bent over to throw a hip check. Colaiacovo rose up to avoid the check but was flipped over on his head by the check and left the game with a head injury. It is the third suspension of Ott's career, and that clearly was a mitigating factor in the discipline. While Philadelphia's Mike Richards and Los Angeles' Rob ..."
Hicks insists he will remain owner of Dallas Stars
"Stars owner Tom Hicks reiterated Tuesday that he has no plans to sell the Stars. Responding to a report in The Globe and Mail of Toronto, which speculated Hicks would have to sell both the Stars and the Rangers to resolve his current debt situation, Hicks said he believes his debt situation with Hicks Sports Group will get resolved and that he will retain ownership of the Stars. "Hicks Sports Group is working through the default issue with its lenders and is in the process of getting things resolved," Hicks said. "I believe that will be resolved in a positive manner, and we'll move forward from there. But I have no interest in selling the Stars." Hicks has maintained this position since ..."
Steve Ott suspended for two games
"Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk just confirmed that the NHL has suspended Steve Ott for two games for his hip check on Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo Saturday in St. Louis. The NHL did not release its reasoning, and it generally does not take questions on its suspensions, so they just said the hit was ``low.'' There is argument that it was late, and I can agree with that, but it just seemed the wrong hit to make a point on with a suspension. The frustrating thing about the NHL's supplementary discipline is that it appeared to me that Ott's hit last March on Gregory Campbell was more worthy of a suspension than this one. He received no suspension for that hit. It also appears that Rob Scuderi's ..."
Dallas Stars turn emphasis to home ice
"To be fair to the Stars, they really haven't had the schedule to get into any kind of flow at home. Their 1-2-1 slate at American Airlines Center isn't pretty. Neither is the fact they've been outscored, 10-9, at home. But those four games have been sprinkled among seven on the road. After completing a 2-0-1 road trip and pushing their overall record to 5-2-4, the Stars say now is the time to make winning at home a priority. "We're here 41 times, and if you take care of those games, you're going to be in a pretty good situation," captain Brenden Morrow said. "It's like sleeping in your own bed and how comfortable you are there. That's the same feeling you want playing in your own ..."
Goalie plan nets improved results for Dallas
"As plans go, this one seems to be working out pretty well. Entering the season, the Stars made Marty Turco's game a priority in their blueprint for success. Management brought in a new goalie coach in Mike Valley, a new backup goalie in Alex Auld and a structured plan for Turco - one that includes games off and plenty of rest and even days to practice. The hope was that he could regain the form that made him a three-time selection for the All-Star Game earlier in his career. And 11 games into the season, Turco is 3-2-3 with a 2.19 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. Among goalies with at least three appearances, he ranks sixth in GAA and is tied for eighth in save ..."
Blues physical tilt against visiting Stars
"The Blues admitted that they lost their focus Saturday night after Dallas' Steve Ott leveled defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo in the second period. Fighting a one-goal deficit at the time, the Blues spent more time fighting the Stars the remainder of the game and fell 4-1 at Scottrade Center. There were a total of 26 penalties and 86 penalty minutes in the game, including 20 penalties and 62 penalty minutes that came after Ott's controversial hit on Colaiacovo. "We had energy, we had some legs and we were working," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "We lost our focus in the second period ... didn't stick with our game. The Blues' record dropped to 4-4-1 overall, as they fell back to .500 for the ..."
Stars top Blues
"The Stars wouldn't have told you this a month ago, but this really was a challenging start to the season. Seven of the first 11 games on the road. Seven games in 11 days in their current stretch. It would have been easy to come up with excuses, like a new system, some new kids in the lineup, or a couple of key injuries. But Dallas came up with a 4-1 statement win over St. Louis on Saturday, and enters its first three-day break of the season with a 5-2-4 record and a franchise-best 4-0-3 start on the road."We're not ordering the championship rings or anything, but yeah, this is what we were hoping to see," said Brad Richards, who had two assists Saturday and has four points since returning ..."
Dallas Stars' Woywitka returns to roots
"Jeff Woywitka spent four years in the St. Louis Blues' organization, including the first 152 games of his NHL career. So it was that he returned to Scottrade Center on Saturday night with a few pleasant memories. "Definitely, I had some good times here," said Woywitka, a 26-year-old defenseman who signed with the Stars as a free agent in the summer. But Woywitka said he understands the business of the NHL and the reason for the move. He was set free by the Blues to make room for the return of top-level draft choice Erik Johnson and promising youngster Alex Pietrangelo. In fact, the Stars made the same decision with Darryl Sydor, letting him go while signing Karlis Skrastins and making ..."
Stars' young defensemen aim for consistency in leading the rush up ice
"The inconsistencies the Stars have shown moving the puck out of their own end is a lot like other things surrounding the team. The young defensemen are going through trial and error and growing pains - just as new GM Joe Nieuwendyk and new coach Marc Crawford are doing. And, just as it is for fans getting used to a new era of Stars hockey, there's curiosity on the part of the players whether they'll be able to do things correctly each game."I think it's a process," Crawford said, "and we're getting better each game."The Stars' blueliners are collecting the lowest total salary (about $8.6 million) of any group of seven defensemen in the NHL. Their inexperience has shown. In Monday's game ..."
Brad Richards returns to lineup after missing two games with groin injury
"Brad Richards was talking Thursday morning about the balance between coming back from a groin injury that probably is not going to be healed any time soon and resting the groin for as long as possible to make sure there isn't a relapse. When asked what was better - a quick comeback or a long rest - the veteran center replied, "That's the million dollar question."The Stars got their answer Thursday night, as Richards returned after taking two games off. Richards said that he had been playing through pain early in the season, but that he knew after last Saturday's game against Chicago that he needed a break. So why not take a complete break, miss games Thursday and Saturday (at St. Louis) and ..."
Dallas Stars' latest thrill ride ends in 5-4 OT loss
"The Dallas Stars have moved on from the roller coaster and seem to be trying out new amusement park rides every night. It was like they jumped from the Tilt-a-Whirl to the Salt-and-Pepper Shaker on Thursday, falling behind 4-1, mounting a three-goal comeback in the third period and eventually walking out of Staples Center with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings. It was a game rife with mistakes and spectacular plays, and it leaves Dallas at 4-2-4, good for 12 points after 10 games. They are third in the Pacific Division, behind Phoenix's 12 points in eight games and the Kings' 12 points (and six wins) in 10 games. But, just as important, it leaves the Stars with quite a bit of ..."
Artyukhin suspended for taking out Niskanen
"Ducks winger Evgeny Artyukhin was suspended for the third time in his NHL career Thursday as the league docked him three games for a "slew-footing" incident in the second period of Wednesday night's 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. Seconds after Brenden Morrow gave Dallas a 2-0 lead, Artyukhin delivered a hard check to Stars defenseman Matt Niskanen along the sideboard in the Dallas zone and used his leg to take Niskanen's feet out from under him. Artyukhin will not be eligible to return to action until Oct. 31 at Phoenix. "While we disagree with the decision to suspend Artyukhin, we understand that the league is trying to protect players from injury," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. ..."
Handzus wins it for Kings in OT
"It shouldn't have been this difficult. But these are the Kings, after all, and no gain comes easily to them. Michal Handzus' shot from just above the left circle 55 seconds into overtime gave the Kings a 5-4 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday, allowing them to save face after losing a three-goal lead in the third period. It also allowed them to more enthusiastically enjoy Anze Kopitar's first career hat trick, which he had completed in the second period. Yet, they couldn't forgive themselves for a rally by a Dallas team that was playing its second game in two nights. "Games like that can't happen for this team," Dustin Brown said. "That's why we went through all those learning ..."
Ducks doomed again by sluggish start
"With his team on the verge of getting blown out of its own building for the second straight game, Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle switched up the line combinations. He called a timeout. He yelled. Eventually, and more importantly, the players realized the game had begun. Down, 3-0, in the middle period to the Dallas Stars, the Ducks rallied to give 14,503 at Honda Center hope, before eventually falling, 4-2. "It's a positive sign on one hand. On the other hand it's not," Carlyle said. "It lets them off the hook for the rest of the game, and that's not what we're about." Rather than excusing another forgettable start, the coach hinted that changes were in store after the loss, the Ducks' ..."
Kings face former coach Crawford tonight
"Marc Crawford was asked Wednesday about Jamie Benn, the latest 20-year-old wunderkind to come into his stable, and the compliments began to flow until they bordered on gushing. You can bet Benn reminded the Dallas Stars' new head coach, at least in some way, of someone he recently saw in a Kings uniform. From 2006-08, Crawford coached a Kings team whose best players were younger than 25. He was fired after compiling a 59-84-21 record, missing the playoffs both seasons and missing out on some of the best years of Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, Alexander Frolov, Patrick O'Sullivan, Mike Cammalleri, Jack Johnson and Jonathan Quick's careers. But if the experience left a bad taste in Crawford's ..."
Ducks can't make up for poor start in loss to Stars
"It is getting late to say it's early. Eight games into the season, the Ducks haven't found themselves, and their spurt of focused effort in the third period of a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday at the Honda Center wasn't enough. "We didn't start playing until the third period. That's not acceptable in this league," center Ryan Getzlaf said. "We tried to put a game together in 20 minutes. It's 60." Shut out in two of their previous three games, the Ducks fell behind, 3-0, before rallying to cut the lead to one goal when Joffrey Lupul scored at 8:35 of the third."
Stars fans frustrated with TV
"Much of the e-mails for the past week or so have revolved around the fans' difficulty in trying to watch games on television. I really do feel for you, because I know how frustrating it is. But I have some bad news - I'm not sure it's going to get any better. What Stars fans must deal with is a web of cable and satellite providers who are having to make difficult economic decisions every day, and the bottom line is that hockey does not make much money for TV people. The Stars' ratings are up to start this season, but they typically fall in the 1s and 2s. Baseball, basketball and college sports do much better. So when DirecTV has to make a decision on how much it wants to pay for Versus ..."
Cornell plans to honor Dallas Stars GM
"Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk will get his No. 25 retired at Cornell University on Feb. 26, the school announced Tuesday. Nieuwendyk and former Big Red goalie Ken Dryden each will be honored as the university celebrates the 40th anniversary of the 1969-70 NCAA championship. "It's a huge honor, and it's very special," said Nieuwendyk, who lives in Ithaca, N.Y., in the off-season. "I'm up there all the time in the summer, and I really like to stay involved, so this will be a really nice thing for me." Nieuwendyk played at Cornell from 1984 to 1987. In 73 career games, he had 68 goals and 71 assists for 139 points. He was named player of the year for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference ..."
Morrow recovering his old skills
"Marty Turco received the brunt of Brenden Morrow's enthusiasm in a recent game. While Turco was trying to focus on an odd-man rush, Morrow came barreling in on the backcheck and took out the attacking forward, Turco and the goal frame all in one fell swoop. "He almost killed me," Turco said with a chuckle. "That's going end to end, Morrow style." Maybe so, but Morrow is proving he can be more than a bull in a china shop. His blind backhand pass that set up Jamie Benn's goal Monday against Los Angeles is a sign the Stars captain is getting back to 100 percent. After reconstructive knee surgery on his right ACL last December, many expected Morrow to take more than a year to get back to ..."
Kings end three-game losing streak by beating Stars, 4-1
"Ryan Smyth had a power-play goal and two assists, Justin Williams added a goal and an assist, and the road-weary Kings ended a losing streak at three games with a 4-1 victory against the Dallas Stars on Monday night. Anze Kopitar and Wayne Simmonds scored, and Jonathan Quick made 29 saves as the Kings wrapped up a season-long, six-game trip. Kings Coach Terry Murray gave his team the day off Sunday to rest about a dozen players recovering from cases of flu picked up during the nine-day trip that included stops along the East Coast and through the Midwest. The Kings (5-4-0) scored three straight goals in the second period while outshooting the Stars, 18 to four."
Los Angeles Kings dominate second period in 4-1 win over Dallas Stars
"If the Stars learned anything Monday, it's that the trek through the Pacific Division isn't going to be easy. Starting a run of three games against divisional foes, Dallas had a horrendous second period and lost a 4-1 game to the Los Angeles Kings at American Airlines Center. "This is a league where all 30 teams are going to be tough, where you can beat the best team and get beat by any other team on any given night, and we have to realize that," said center Mike Ribeiro. "We had a great start, and we were good at the end, but you can't just go to sleep for 10 or 15 minutes like we did. You can't do that and expect to win." The Stars were playing without four injured players - Brad ..."
Rib injury flares up, probably will keep Modano off road trip
"Mike Modano was flying through a morning skate practice Friday and looking good, whipping shots on net, flipping backhand passes to teammates and skating with the natural stride that looks all too smooth for 39-year-old legs. And then it happened. "I tried a one-timer from [Mike] Ribeiro, and it just fell apart," Modano said of a tweak to a rib injury that has kept him out since the first game of the season. And so the Stars center went from thinking he would be in the lineup Monday against the Kings to not knowing when he might return. He said he doubts he will be on the Stars' three-game road trip that starts Wednesday in Anaheim and lists himself as "day to day for the next month." ..."
Dallas Stars' tough guy Krys Barch believes he can take on more
"Krys Barch can do more than fight. He has to, in today's NHL. The lone true enforcer on the Stars roster, Barch has to stick up for his teammates and do a lot of brawling in an effort to motivate them. He embraces that part of the job. But since Barch had only 19 fighting majors in 72 games last season, he has to do more if he wants a place in the lineup. "With the new system and new coaches, and really the way the league is moving, you have to be able to skate and you have to be able to play and bring energy," Barch said. "That's something I think I can add to the mix." At 6-2, 220, Barch is the Stars' heaviest forward, and that can add an element to a lineup that's heavy on speed and ..."
Huet: 'I feel like I let the team down'
"The only one in the Blackhawks locker room who had anything bad to say about goalie Cristobal Huet after the team's first United Center loss was ... Cristobal Huet. ''I can blame only myself,'' Huet said Saturday night following a 4-3 defeat to the Dallas Stars. ''Right now, I feel like I let the team down. I have to see this as just a bump in the road. There were times I really looked bad tonight. I didn't have it.'' But none of the other Hawks had anything negative to say about Huet, who did hear some booing from the fans. ''You have to give credit to Dallas,'' Kris Versteeg said. ''They came in here and played a real good game. That was not how we want to play. We don't want to get ..."
Dallas Stars' Petersen thriving through versatility
"You never know what Toby Petersen is going to do. Heck, a lot of times, even he doesn't. Petersen is the Dallas Stars' Mr. Versatility. The 30-year old from Minneapolis can fill in on a top line if need be. He can shut down the other team's best players, as he did in the 2008 playoffs. He can play gritty on a fourth line with guys such as Krys Barch and converted defenseman Mark Fistric, as he did Saturday. "He shows a real determination and willingness to do whatever it takes to play," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "We've put him at center, left wing, right wing, and he's gone out and been very workmanlike each day. I like that. " On Saturday, Petersen showed the skill that helped ..."
Bruins respond on road
"Because of his elite wrister and knack for finding seams from which to release his shot, Michael Ryder has a reputation of being a pure goal scorer. Last night, playing with Marc Savard on the Bruins' No. 1 line for the first time this season, Ryder didn't score a goal, but he showed how dangerous he can be when he brings his all-around game. Ryder skated well. He backchecked aggressively. He was anything but tentative when throwing around his body. It was no surprise, then, that Ryder set up two Savard goals to help power the Bruins to a much-needed 3-0 win over the Dallas Stars before 17,811 at American Airlines Center."
