Ilya Kovalchuk enjoying a stellar season as quintessential team player
Parise won't be caught in the pact
Devils' Zajac likely to miss another month
Parise won't be caught in the pact
February 11
New York Post
"
Just 16 shopping days remain until Deadline Day. The word is Zach Parise wishes to concentrate on playing hockey rather than worry about negotiating a deal before Feb. 27. That's when it becomes too late for the Devils to trade him, should they find themselves financially despairing of re-signing him. Parise, who brings a seven-game point streak into this afternoon's visit by the Panthers, yesterday was silent regarding his upcoming contract. Before clamming up, however, he said he remains open to re-signing with the Devils during the season. But sources say he's "hockey first" right now, not wanting such a major distraction as negotiations, if possible. That means not discussing his

Devils' Zajac likely to miss another month
February 10
NHL.com
"
There's a good possibility New Jersey center Travis Zajac will be back on the ice within two weeks. Game action will take a little longer. According to Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello, Zajac, who has played just eight games this season while recovering from a torn left Achilles' tendon, must build up strength and flexibility in his foot and leg before starting to skate. Only then can he begin working his way back into practicing. "The good news is that it appears it has healed the way it should," Lamoriello told the media hours before his club hosted to the St. Louis Blues at Prudential Center. "In saying that, because he's been off the ice a number of weeks and he hasn't done

Devils' Parise stays ... for now
January 31
New York Post
"
Sources say inquiring general managers are getting the word Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is not dealing unrestricted free agent-to-be Zach Parise before the NHL's Feb. 27 trade deadline. Instead, it is thought if the Devils do not want to re-sign Parise in June, they'll trade his rights to a team that wants an advance shot at negotiations before he becomes free July 1. The advance payments the Devils are receiving from the NHL do nothing to enhance the team's attractiveness for a player preparing to sign a deal for the rest of his career. The financial news was about all that came out of All-Star weekend regarding the Devils, who had no representatives at the skills competition or Sunday's

NHL could loan cash-strapped Devils money for operating costs
January 21
New York Post
"
The National Hockey League is in talks with the money-losing New Jersey Devils to advance the team money so that it can continue to operate through the season, The Post has learned. Under the NHL plan, Devils' controlling owner Jeffery Vanderbeek would continue to run the team while he pursues a long-term financing solution, sources said. "We can presume if the advance has not happened, it is going to happen soon," a source close to the team said. The Devils, which need to meet payroll twice a month until the regular season ends April 7, are weighing trading team captain Zach Parise for draft picks. Parise makes $6 million and his contract expires at the end of the year, a source said. A

Devils swing 'big' deal
January 21
New York Post
"
This deal should be a steal of a rental for the Devils. Last night, they acquired 6-foot-4 winger Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Hurricanes for Albany defenseman Joe Sova and a 2012 fourth-round pick. "He's got hockey sense. He knows how to play the game," general manager Lou Lamoriello said, marveling at his fortune. "And he's 6-4. "This player is going to help our team." Lamoriello said there is a chance Ponikarovsky could be in the Devils' lineup this afternoon when the Flyers visit the Prudential Center. The 31-year-old played for Carolina in Raleigh last night. Ponikarovsky is eligible for unrestricted free agency July 1, and is earning $1.5 million this season. He has had four 20-goal

Parise hopes Devils won't cut payroll
January 21
New York Post
"
Devils captain Zach Parise, the NHL's most-coveted trade deadline "rental" candidate, said he hopes the team doesn't go down the payroll-cutting road if the league advances Jeff Vanderbeek's ownership group with an infusion of money, as reported in The Post's Business section today. "You hear about teams that, no matter what, they're not going to spend to the cap," Parise told The Post. "That's just the way they are. "It's hard to be competitive if you're not going to, if you can't spend as much as these other teams. "So if there's a change, you hope that part won't change, because we've always been a salary cap team."
"
Canes deal Ponikarovsky, get draft pick
January 21
Raleigh News & Observer
"
The NHL trade deadline is still a month away, but the Carolina Hurricanes picked up a draft pick and cleared one of their expiring contracts off the books Friday night. After a 3-0 win over the Washington Capitals, the Canes traded forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012 and minor-league defenseman Joe Sova. Sova, 23, has split time between the AHL and ECHL this season. The Devils signed the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Illinois native as a free agent in 2011 after three years at Alaska-Fairbanks. The Canes signed Ponikarovsky to a one-year, $1.5 million contract over the summer. He had seven goals and eight assists in 49 games for the Hurricanes.

Devils' goalie Brodeur likely to return
January 17
New York Post
"
Cancel that retirement party. The NHL's winningest-ever goalie told The Post yesterday he is now leaning toward playing as a 40-year-old next year. "I'm having fun," said Martin Brodeur, expected to be in goal for the Devils tonight when the Jets visit Prudential Center. "I feel differently about it now than I did last summer, or at the start of the season," Brodeur said. "It's not 100 percent, but I'm definitely leaning toward coming back next year." The possibility of a lockout next season could muddle his plans, but Brodeur previously insisted he was undecided about playing after his contract ($5.2 million) ends this season.

Elias, Tallinder "getting better", but status for Friday's game still uncertain
December 21
Bergen Record
"
Devils coach Pete DeBoer said center Patrik Elias (flu) and defenseman Henrik Tallinder (back spasms) are both feeling better, but he doesn't know yet whether either will be available for Friday's game against Washington. "I believe they're getting better," DeBoer said today. "The report I got this morning is they're both improving, but I won't be able to tell you whether we'll have them until probably tomorrow. We'll see how they are tomorrow."
"
Devils' Zajac practices for first time this season
December 8
New York Post
"
For the first time this season, Devils top center Travis Zajac practiced with the team Wednesday, coming back from Aug. 18 Achilles tendon surgery. Zajac, who has skated on his own and with some of the Devils scratches and alumni lately, followed usual linemate Zach Parise onto the ice, the morning after a 3-2 overtime victory in Toronto. Devils CEO Lou Lamoriello said Zajac won't be in the lineup until late next week at the earliest.
"
Devils CEO against realignment
December 8
New York Post
"
While refusing to reveal whether he was among the four dissidents voting against the NHL's new realignment plan, Devils CEO Lou Lamoriello on Wednesday left no doubt he would have preferred keeping the current six-division setup. "We certainly would have liked it to stay the way it is," Lamoriello said of the scheme that creates four "conferences" of seven or eight teams, and limits interconference play to one game at each site. "This plan obviously got the most support, and whenever something like that happens, you take a step back," Lamoriello said, citing widespread Western Conference backing for the setup, which still needs approval from the Players' Association.

Martin Brodeur discusses possibility of playing for team other than Devils
December 6
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Martin Brodeur was asked today by the Toronto media whether he could envision himself playing for a team other than the Devils after this season. "In the future you never know, but I don't want to," Brodeur said. "But if I want to play -- and I have so much respect for this organization -- and if they don't feel I'm the guy for them and they want to move on, if I still want to play I have to look after myself. I don't see that happening, but I can't say no." He said he hasn't decided what will happen beyond this season.

Could Zach Parise be headed to the Wild next season?
December 2
St. Paul Pioneer Press
"
Former Minnesota North Stars captain J.P. Parise says his youngest son, New Jersey Devils captain Zach Parise, wants to sign next summer with the NHL team that will give him the best chance to win the Stanley Cup. Could that be the Wild? The elder Parise called Minnesota "a young, coming team." After signing a one-year contract for $6 million with the Devils last summer, Parise is scheduled to become a free agent following this season. "He likes to win," J.P. said after watching the Devils work out at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday in preparation for tonight's game against the Wild at the X. "He likes to have a chance to win, and right now it's kind of tough with the Devils." J.P., one

Devils: Travis Zajac could practice with team in two weeks
November 23
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Travis Zajac has been cleared by doctors and skated in New Jersey the past two days, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said today. The center, who underwent Achilles tendon surgery in August, will continue to skate for the next week and a half or two weeks. At that point, if all goes well, he will start practicing with the team in two weeks. "He has been released by the doctors. He is in town. He skated yesterday morning here and also this morning and will continue to do that for the next week and a half to two weeks," Lamoriello said. "And if everything is on schedule as it has been, he'll start practicing with the team in two weeks.

Kovalchuk making trip to Boston and "possibly" will play Tuesday; Hedberg to start vs. Bruins
November 14
Bergen Record
"
Ilya Kovalchuk will accompany the Devils on their flight to Boston this afternoon and head coach said he will "possibly" play against the Bruins Tuesday night. "We'll see how he is tomorrow," DeBoer said after Kovalchuk took part in most of the team's practice today at Prudential Center. "He got through practice. We cut him a little short just (because) I didn't want to push the issue because he felt good. We'll skate him again tomorrow morning and see where he's at." Kovalchuk has missed the last four games with a leg muscle pull (likely a groin).

Report: Kovalchuk likely out for Devils on Tuesday
November 8
New York Post
"
Ilya Kovalchuk missed practice Monday and the Devils winger would need a "miraculous recovery" to play Tuesday against the Hurricanes, coach Pete DeBoer told NorthJersey.com. Kovalchuk pulled his leg muscle in Thursday's win over the Flyers, and received treatment at the Devils headquarters Monday. "I worked out a little bit, so it's definitely better than a couple of days ago, and we'll see tomorrow," Kovalchuk told the website.
"
Kovalchuk doubtful for Tuesday
November 7
NHL.com
"
Nothing has been made official, but it's looking highly unlikely the New Jersey Devils will have forward Ilya Kovalchuk in the lineup for tomorrow's game against the Carolina Hurricanes (7:30 p.m. Versus, TSN2). Kovalchuk, who hasn't played since leaving late in the third period of last Thursday's 4-3 shootout win in Philadelphia due a pulled leg muscle, sat out today's practice at Prudential Center in Newark. Coach Peter DeBoer wasn't ready to completely rule Kovalchuk out for tomorrow, but told reporters it would take "a miraculous recovery" for him to play.
"
Devils' Zajac back skating after tearing Achilles
November 1
New York Post
"
Although he would not offer a timetable for his return, injured Devils center Travis Zajac said Monday he has started skating in his recovery from August Achilles tendon surgery. Zajac said he skated Thursday and expects to hit the ice again later this week after he returns to hometown Winnipeg to continue his rehabilitation. "Just fooling around and getting used to being on skates. Baby steps," the Devils' No. 1 center said. "About a half-hour. It's easier than walking. Being in boots, you're locked up and don't use your Achilles that much."

Brodeur faces shots at Devils Tuesday morning skate: report
October 26
New York Post
"
Injured Devils goalie Martin Brodeur faced shots in Los Angeles on Tuesday during the team's morning skate prior to facing the Kings. NJ.com says Brodeur, recovering from a shoulder injury suffered Oct. 13, faced shots first from defensemen then from forwards, including Ilya Kovalchuk. "It's coming. It's not too far (away) but it's not there," Brodeur told the website. "It's a process. Little things that bother me in my shoulder need to get better. I felt it a little bit today. If I tweak it a little, like today once in a while, it's not a big deal."
"
Martin Brodeur will miss up to 7-10 days to rehab his injured shoulder
October 20
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Martin Brodeur will miss up to 7-10 days in order to rehabilitate his bruised right shoulder, but will not need surgery, the Devils said today. GM Lou Lamoriello said Brodeur had a series of tests and could be back in less than seven days, but the team provided the time frame in order to reduce the number of daily questions about the 39-year-old goaltender's return. Brodeur injured his shoulder while diving to make a save in the first period of last Thursday's 2-1 shootout victory over the Los Angeles Kings. He was replaced by Johan Hedberg, who played the final two periods, overtime and the shootout. Hedberg then played the next game Saturday in Nashville.

Devils say Adam Larsson's foot injury isn't serious
October 17
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Devils rookie Adam Larsson spent an unusually long time on the trainer's table today, but the 18-year-old Swedish defenseman is not seriously hurt. Coach Pete DeBoer said Larsson, who took a shot off the foot in Thursday's home game against the Kings, didn't practice today because he was resting the foot. "He's got a little bit of soreness there from that, but it wouldn't have kept him out. If we were playing tomorrow night he would've been out there today," DeBoer said of practice.
"
Mattias Tedenby: X-rays show no damage after being hit in ear with puck
October 7
Newark Star-Ledger
"
In a era when NHL teams monitor any head injury, the Devils undoubtedly will keep a close watch on 21-year-old winger Mattias Tedenby after he was struck in the right ear by a puck. The mishap occurred during practice today. Tedenby suffered a cut when he was hit with a dump-in pass. He hurried off the ice and was in obvious pain. "He went to the hospital. They did all the X-rays and everything," general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "I expect him to be OK tomorrow."
"
Coach's style, unbalanced lines could prompt another slow start
October 5
New York Post
"
This looms as a repeat of last season, when the Devils floundered early and caught fire late. It won't be as drastic, but it will reflect the difference between lacking and having Travis Zajac. One key question is whether new coach Pete DeBoer is more like John MacLean or Jacques Lemaire, and the early answer is somewhere in between. DeBoer wants his forwards coming well back, but has ordered the green light for his defensemen to pinch, charge down the offensive boards for loose pucks to maintain possession in the opponents' end. Trouble is, that style means 2-on-1s against, no matter how dutifully forwards cover for defensemen. And 2-on-1s are not the sort of attacks Martin Brodeur stops
"
Devils deal Steckel to Maple Leafs
October 5
New York Post
"
Making room for a rookie center such as Adam Henrique or Brad Mills, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello last night traded 29-year-old center David Steckel to the Maple Leafs for a fourth-round 2012 draft pick. New Jersey will save $1.1 million in salary this season and next on Steckel. The Devils acquired him and a 2012 second-rounder from the Caps for Jason Arnott on Feb. 28, after acquiring Arnott from Nashville for Matt Halischuk and a second-rounder June 19, 2010. Steckel is perhaps best known for his hit to the head of Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1. Crosby absorbed another hit in a game four days later and hasn't played since then.
"
Devils won't cut Sykora
October 4
New York Post
"
There are still contracts to be negotiated, waiver bargains to grab, but forward Petr Sykora and defenseman Anton Stralman appear to have made the Devils as tryouts. Indications are that the Devils and Sykora are negotiating a contract, likely to be one year and less than $1 million. In addition, general manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed what was obvious from the first exhibition game, that prize first-rounder Adam Larsson has made the team. Those three are among the 23 (regular-season roster size) left in camp unaffected by yesterday's demotions, waivers and release.
"
Brodeur no fan of head shot bans
September 28
New York Post
"
Devils goalie Martin Brodeur says the new NHL warden is giving hockey a black eye with his spate of head-shot suspensions. "Not everybody is following preseason, and when it's over, the only thing people are going to hear about is, 'Twelve suspensions for 37 games or whatever it turns out,' " Brodeur told The Post yesterday. "That's not good for the game. No other sport does anything like that to itself." New NHL punishment VP Brendan Shanahan is setting suspension records for head hits. "It could be chaotic," Brodeur said. "Hopefully this is just an issue because the guys are adjusting. He's setting a precedent for future calls."

Devils will retire Scott Niedermayer's No. 27 on Dec. 16
September 27
Newark Star-Ledger
"
The Devils will retire Scott Niedermayer's No. 27 on Dec. 16 when the Dallas Stars visit the Prudential Center. The smooth-skating defenseman played on all three Stanley Cup championship teams with the Devils. Between 1991-92 and 2003-04, Niedermayer scored 476 points (112 goals, 364 assists) in 892 regular season games. In 146 playoff games he had 17-47-64. "Scott Niedermayer's talent and leadership played significant roles in each of our three Stanley Cup Championships," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement released by the club. "We look forward to welcoming the Niedermayer family back to New Jersey as we retire Scott's no. 27."
"
Hopeful Devils fight for spots
September 23
New York Post
"
The roster crystallizes quickly for a team that missed the playoffs. After one exhibition game, it's almost clear who will be with the Devils when they open the season Oct. 8. If they fill a 23-man roster, unlike last season's early salary cap circus of the short bench, the defense might comprise Andy Greene, Henrik Tallinder, Bryce Salvador, Anton Volchenkov, Matt Taormina and Adam Larsson, with Anton Stalman as the seventh. Up front, it could be Ilya Kovalchuk, Zach Parise, Dainius Zubrus and Eric Boulton on left wing, Patrik Elias, Petr Sykora, Jacob Josefson and, according to what coach Pete DeBoer has said, David Steckel at center. On right wing, there's David Clarkson, Nick Palmieri,

Rookie Adam Larsson believes he can play for Devils this season
September 19
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Adam Larsson believes he will play in the NHL this season. But if there is pressure on the fourth overall pick in this June's draft, he doesn't feel it. "I don't think there is so much pressure," Larsson said today. "I feel more pressure from myself." After two days of training camp with veterans, does Larsson get a reading on whether he is ready to make the jump from the Swedish Elite League into the NHL without playing in the minors? "It's hard to tell now. We haven't played any games," he said. "There are some things I really need to improve, like adapting to the small rinks and the speed. But I think I have a good chance (to play in the NHL this season)."
"
Final season for Brodeur?
September 18
NHL.com
"
Martin Brodeur opened what could be the final training camp of his NHL career Saturday. The surefire Hall of Fame goaltender, who will turn 40 in May, is in the final year of his contract with the New Jersey Devils and is not currently negotiating a new one. Brodeur isn't willing to say this season will be his swan song, instead opting to take a wait-and-see approach. "This is going to be the same as every other season," Brodeur said. "I'm not going to change my approach because I feel it could be my last. I just go out there and try to have fun and enjoy the game. After that, I'll evaluate how I feel about continuing. I'm approaching this season like any other season."
"
Brodeur not sure he'll stay with Devils
September 16
New York Post
"
The year of decision has arrived for the Devils' all-time great. Martin Brodeur said he hopes this isn't his swan song in New Jersey, but allows that he might leave if the team is rebuilding. "We'll see. I'm looking forward to training camp, getting started on the right foot again, and we'll see. We'll see what the season will bring me," Brodeur told The Post, ready to report with the veterans tomorrow. "I'm open-minded about everything, about my future. "I want to make sure I make the right decision for myself and my family. I'll really take my time and see."
"
Pete DeBoer: Team has something to prove
September 15
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Pete DeBoer comes from an organization where doubt is part of the mindset. The Florida Panthers, whom DeBoer coached for the past three seasons, have missed the playoffs in each of the last 10 years. They haven't advanced past the first round since 1996. So DeBoer, set to open training camp as the Devils' new head coach, would recognize shaken confidence if it existed around a team embarrassed by missing the playoffs last spring. "I don't sense that. I think there is optimism," DeBoer said in an interview with The Star-Ledger. "I think guys are ticked off. I think they're excited to right the ship. I don't sense any doubts or lack of confidence."

GM Lou Lamoriello likes Devils' defense; Bryce Salvador says he's ready to go
September 15
Newark Star-Ledger
"
He's got a new head coach and a healthy Zach Parise, but Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello seems most excited about the team's corps of defenseman as training camp is set to open. Rookies report for physicals Thursday morning. Veterans take their medicals on Friday with the rookies having two on-ice sessions that day. Veterans hit the ice on Saturday. There will be three groups on Saturday and Sunday, with the first intra-squad scrimmage on Monday. "What I'm excited about is the defense, which was sort of an area we looked at last year," Lamoriello said at the team's annual golf tournament today at Upper Montclair Country Club. "(I look at) the young defenseman and also the veterans,

Devils, still banking on Martin Brodeur, looking for goalie of future
September 15
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Martin Brodeur says he is already burned out. From playing golf. Not hockey. "I've had my fill of it," Brodeur said as he began today's annual Devils golf event at Upper Montclair Country Club. "I'm golfed-out." As for the upcoming hockey season, Brodeur is ready, and new coach Pete DeBoer is expecting a vintage season from the future Hall of Famer. "The expectation is that he has a career year," DeBoer told me. "I don't think that's out of the question. I watched what (Dwayne) Roloson did last year with Tampa at 42. I don't think there is anybody in this organization that doubts Marty has a lot left in the tank. That's what we're hoping for."

Devils insist team is not going bankrupt, despite report
September 13
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Reacting to a New York Post report that claimed the Devils missed a $100 million loan payment on Sept. 1 and are on the verge of bankruptcy, the hockey team's business department issued an expansive statement today denying there is any valid reason for financial concern. In fact, two people familiar with the relationship between the team and its lenders said the deadline for the loan payment had been pushed back almost two months and an agreement to sell a 47 percent share of the NHL club to someone other than Devils chairman Jeff Vanderbeek could be completed in the next 40 to 45 days. If and when the agreement by partners Mike Gilfillan and Ray Chambers to sell their shares of Brick City

Devils deal in the works
September 13
New York Post
"
The New Jersey Devils, which missed a $100 million principal loan payment Sept. 1, have taken a small step toward a financial recovery after principal owner Jeff Vanderbeek reached an agreement to purchase co-owner Ray Chambers' 47-percent stake in the franchise, The Post has learned. The deal for Chambers' stake, which had been on the market for more than eight months, helps steady the Devils' ownership situation -- but the heavily-indebted NHL team must still work to restructure it debt. The team's lenders have not yet agreed to refinance the Devils' loans which are in default, a source close to the situation told The Post.

Petr Sykora among players invited to attend Devils training camp
September 13
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Petr Sykora, once a member of the Devils' A Line with Patrik Elias and Jason Arnott, has been invited to training camp on a tryout basis, according to general manager Lou Lamoriello. The Devils have also invited Justin Barnett, Steve Bernier, Anton Stralman and Thomas Nesbitt to camp. None of the five players are signed to contracts and will be in camp solely on a tryout basis. Sykora, who will turn 35 in November, played in his native Czech Republic and in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League last season. He had 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 13 games for Plzen in the Czech Republic and 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 28 games for Dynamo Minsk.

The New Jersey Devils training camp doesn't open until tomorrow but already the three-time NHL champs are skating on thin ice, The Post has learned. The attendance-challenged, heavily indebted team missed its Sept. 1 loan payment, giving its lenders a breakaway chance to push the team into bankruptcy, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said. "The Devils are blowing up," the source said. The team's financial hardships could also affect Newark's four-year-old Prudential Center, the Devils' home arena. Team-owned Devils Arena Entertainment operates the $375 million building and guarantees the Devils' loans and, therefore, is in danger of also going bankrupt.

Zach Parise says loss of Travis Zajac will be tough for Devils
September 10
Newark Star-Ledger
"
With Devils training camp a week away, winger Zach Parise did a little acting today in a video that was filmed to promote the NHL Network's re-branded "On the Fly" show. The Star-Ledger had exclusive access to watch the filming of the video and Parise spoke to me just prior to the shooting in which he was shown with his right leg in a whirlpool tub while watching the NHL Network. Parise, who was engaged in early August and will be married next July back home in Minnesota, discussed the loss of center Travis Zajac, who underwent surgery Aug. 18 to repair a torn Achilles tendon. Zajac suffered the injury during off-ice training and could be lost even longer than the stated estimate of three

Parise open to long-term stay in New Jersey
September 8
NHL.com
"
After Zach Parise signed a one-year contract this summer, a lot of people started reading into it. Why wouldn't he sign a long-term deal? Does this mean he's angling to leave New Jersey at the end of the upcoming season? On Thursday, Parise talked about the contract and said by no means did he sign the deal thinking it would be a one-and-done situation. "We talked about both," Parise said of discussing short- and long-term deals. "Without getting into too much detail with respect to everyone involved, we came down to that and that made the most sense. We said it right after we signed it, that we were going to keep talking. It's not as if we're not going to talk until next June 30. We'll

Devils prospect Alexander Vasyunov, a 21-year-old left winger who played 18 games for the NHL team last season, was killed when a plane carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team crashed early today in Tunoshna, Russia. Former NHL defenseman Karel Rachunek, 32, who played 47 games for the Devils in 2007-08, also died in the tragedy. "It's a tragedy you can't even express. There are no words or way to try to express my feelings," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said.

The Devils announced the signings of 12 players to new contracts, including 19 year-old goaltender Maxime Clermont, their sixth round pick in 2010, and free agent defenseman Peter Harrold, who spent the last five seasons in the L.A. Kings' organization. Also signed were forwards Matt Anderson, Bryan Haczyk, Brad Mills, Nathan Perkovich, Tim Sestito, Myles Stoesz, Stephane Veilleux, Joseph Whitney, Chad Wiseman and Steve Zalewski. Haczyk, Perkovich, Stoesz and Whitney were signed to AHL contracts. The announcement was made in a statement released by the Devils. NHL policy change on substance abuse?
August 18
Toronto Sun
"
The recent off-ice deaths of two NHL players could spark a change in how the league conducts its substance abuse and behavioural program. Commenting on the passing of New York Ranger Derek Boogaard and Winnipeg Jet Rick Rypien at the league's research and developmnt camp in Toronto, commissioner Gary Bettman told a wire service that he will soon approach the Players Association to study the current policy. Boogaard passed away in May after a mishap with alcohol and a painkiller drug. Rypien, who reportedly suffered from depression, died Monday and police will only say the circumstances were not suspicious. Both men had been in the program, which has helped many players with varied

Parise's contract status may mean no "C"
August 13
Bergen Record
"
Even before Jamie Langenbrunner was traded Jan. 7, Zach Parise was viewed by his teammates and many inside and outside the organization as the likely successor to Langenbrunner as the Devils' captain. Parise was recovering from knee surgery at the time, and made it back for only one game in April, so there was no need to rush to name him captain last season. At this point, however, it remains uncertain if Parise will be given the "C" before the team's 2011-12 season opener. If Parise had signed a long-term extension, as both sides hoped, the decision would be a no-brainer. But, because he settled for a one-year contract and remains eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1,

August 10
Bergen Record
"
The Devils have agreed to terms with goaltender Maxime Clermont on a three-year entry-level contract, general manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed today. (Some of you mentioned this earlier.) Financial terms were not immediately available. Clermont, who will turn 20 on Dec. 31, was the Devils' sixth-round pick, 174th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He is eligible to return to major junior with Gatineau of the QMJHL as an overage player or to play in the minor leagues in 2011-12. "That is a possibility," Lamoriello said of Clermont playing in the minors in 2011-12. "No decision has been made." With Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg, who are slated to play in New Jersey, and Keith Kinkaid

Devils buy out defenseman Colin White
August 3
Bergen Record
"
As expected, defenseman Colin White's 10-season Devils career officially came to an end Tuesday when the team bought out the remaining season on his contract. White, a member of the Devils' 2000 and '03 Stanley Cup teams, and right wing Trent Hunter cleared waivers at noon Tuesday without being claimed, which was a precursor to the team being able to buy them out. After being bought out, White and Hunter, who was acquired in last Thursday's trade with the Islanders, became unrestricted free agents. The Devils saved $3,333,333 in cap space by buying out White and Hunter, leaving them roughly $5.8 million under the NHL's $64.3 million cap for the 2011-12 season.

Devils to buy out Colin White after 11 seasons with the team
August 3
Newark Star-Ledger
"
After 11 seasons with the Devils, Colin White will be playing for someone else when the 2011-12 season begins. The veteran defenseman cleared waivers and will be bought out, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Nothing is official yet, but it will happen," Lamoriello said yesterday of a buyout of White and newly acquired forward Trent Hunter, who were placed on waivers Monday. The buyouts are expected to be completed today, and will make both players unrestricted free agents. White's agent, Ben Hankinson, said the rugged, 6-4, 210-pound defenseman shouldn't have a problem finding work. "I think there's quite a few teams that are interested in his services," Hankinson said. "We're just sorting

Lamoriello says placing Colin White on waivers was 'difficult'
August 2
Newark Star-Ledger
"
Colin White played 11 seasons for the Devils and was an important part of two Stanley Cup championships. As such, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello admitted today that parting ways with the veteran defenseman was a difficult thing to do. But Lamoriello nevertheless placed White on waivers, along with newly acquired forward Trent Hunter, and Lamoriello said if the two players clear waivers, the team will buy out the remainder of their contracts. "This is a hockey and business decision," Lamoriello said of the moves. "Absolutely, this is most difficult. I've had Colin since he was 17. We've had a friendship. But you have to be able to separate that from the business side." The moves will

Devils trade Rolston to Islanders for Hunter
July 29
New York Post
"
Clearing cap space the Devils will need to sign Zach Parise, GM Lou Lamoriello shipped Brian Rolston and his $5 million hit to the Islanders Thursday for Trent Hunter and his $2 million charge. The Devils needed permission from Rolston to complete the deal, which lifts the Islanders closer to the $48.3 million salary floor. Lamoriello signed Rolston, 38, on July 1, 2008, for $20 million over four years as an over-35 free agent. Hunter, 31, played 17 games for the Islanders last season, suffering a torn knee ligament. He has 99 goals and 130 assists in 459 games on Long Island. "I feel great about the trade," said Rolston, who waived his no-trade clause July 1. "I'm super-excited about
