Team upbeat despite three straight losses
"Tight end Vernon Davis said the attitude reflects the players' belief that they can compete with anybody, which the 49ers showed in close defeats at Houston and Indianapolis. "I credit it to the guys, the coaches, having a perspective," coach Mike Singletary said. "Sometimes you can make little improvements here and there that might not show up on the scoreboard. Sometimes it will hit on all cylinders and we'll go from there." Singletary hopes all cylinders are hitting Sunday when the 49ers play the Tennessee Titans at Candlestick Park, looking for their first victory in more than a month. "I think every game we play is going to be pivotal," Singletary said. None more so than for ..."
Kevin Mawae hits back over 'dirty' comments
"Kevin Mawae fired back at Rodney Harrison on Friday, a day after the former NFL safety called the veteran center a "dirty dude" and the Titans the dirtiest team in the NFL. "Maybe it is a way for him to deflect attention away from himself because I think everybody knows who's been in this league for a long time that he may be the dirtiest guy that's ever played this game,'' Mawae said. "Somebody forgot to tell him that that long, wide, 3-foot white line on the sideline, we play inside those, and he spent a lot of his time playing outside of those. "I don't have a lot of respect for that guy.'' Harrison, who played from 1994-2008 with the Chargers and Patriots, made his comments Thursday on ..."
Mawae fires back at Rodney Harrison
"A day after being accused by Rodney Harrison of being the dirtiest player on the dirtiest team in the NFL, Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae fired back at the safety-turned-NBC commentator. "He must have a thing for me. Every time he talks about dirty players, he always talks about me. That's kind of his way of deflecting attention from himself. I don't know," Mawae said. "There's so much stuff I could say right now, but I think the best thing to say is, isn't Rodney Harrison a guy doing TV now? "There's nothing I can say that's not gonna be negative, but whatever. He's the one up in the booth now, and I'm the one still playing ball. Go figure." On The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday, ..."
Total 'D' the key to stopping Titans, QB Vince Young
"For the first time this season, the 49ers will face a quarterback who is as dangerous with his legs as he is with his arm. Vince Young's running résumé includes becoming the first quarterback of the Super Bowl-era to rush for 500 yards as a rookie. To stop the Tennessee Titans' dual threat on Sunday at Candlestick Park, the 49ers might make sure linebacker Patrick Willis keeps Young in his sights. 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky was asked Thursday whether Willis would be matched up on Young to keep the running threat contained. "Yeah, you try to get your best athletes out on the field and have them matched up on certain guys," Manusky said. "That is what you kind of want to do." ..."
49ers' Alex Smith, Tennessee's Vince Young resurface from similar rough roads
"The son of a principal, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is no dummy. He can spot the story line this week as if it were a wide-open receiver in the end zone. It's Smith vs. Vince Young, the two young quarterbacks with parallel career paths and a second chance at NFL success. Heck, even their career totals are identical. Smith has 23 career touchdown passes, just like Young. Young has 33 interceptions, just like Smith. It's their journeys, however, that forge the common bond between Smith and Young as they prepare for the game Sunday between the 49ers (3-4) and the Tennessee Titans (1-6) at Candlestick Park. Both are highly drafted quarterbacks who took unexpected detours to the bench. Both ..."
Not interested in being Titans' latest headline
"For a 1-6 team, the Tennessee Titans generate more than their share of news. Star quarterback, once benched, returns to lineup and wins. ... Beefy running back stops drinking tequila, loses 40 pounds. ... Head coach dons jersey of undefeated team at charity function, says wants to feel like a winner. On Wednesday, another running back stated he wanted to gain 2,000 yards this season after running for 228 yards the week before. And in an unrelated matter, former NFL headhunter Rodney Harrison declared the Titans to be the dirtiest team in the league, in particular center Kevin Mawae. The 49ers play this one-win, many-issues Titans team Sunday at Candlestick Park. Defensively, the 49ers are ..."
In Vince Young's epic odyssey, nine more tests await
"When the decision came down toVince Young at quarterback for the Titans, 10 games remained in the season. This, then, is a 10-step program to rehab Young's NFL career. Step 1 was an unqualified success. Step 2 comes Sunday. But what must Young accomplish over the next two months to prove to the powers-that-be in the organization that he is indeed the Titans' quarterback of the future? It's an open-ended question. This goes beyond mere wins and losses. Statistics are important but provide only part of the final analysis. Ultimately, this comes down to a gut feeling on whether Young, now in his fourth NFL season, is capable of quarterbacking the Titans back to prominence. Much is at stake. ..."
Titans work rotation of defensive linemen
"Two Titans. Two perspectives. Both illustrate the weekly competition between youth and experience on the Titans defensive line, easily the most difficult position on the roster to earn and keep a starting job or playing time. On Sunday, rookie defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks defended the run and pursued Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. "It was great, being able to go out and do the things I worked on," said Marks, a second-round pick. Veteran defensive tackle Jovan Haye, meanwhile, watched the game in street clothes. He was deactivated for the first time as a Titan. "I expected stuff like that maybe later on in my career, but not right now," said the fifth-year pro, who signed a ..."
In a down economy, NFL viewership is up
"When this NFL season began with some franchises struggling to sell tickets, there were concerns about the impact that the uncertain U.S. economy would have on the nation's most prosperous sport. While those concerns have turned out to be justified in a few NFL cities and unfounded in others, there has been an unforeseen development: The NFL's television ratings are soaring this season, and some analysts say it appears to be the result of consumers cutting back on other, more costly leisure activities in favor of watching pro football on TV. "I think there's only one answer and that is the NFL and television are actually getting the so-called 'benefit' of the recession," said Neal Pilson, ..."
Titans' Davis grateful for another chance after DUI
"Chris Davis was grateful for a second chance with the Tennessee Titans, who re-signed him Tuesday with the possibilities of him having a hand in the return game. The Titans will decide between Davis and Alvin Pearman, signed last week but inactive last Sunday, as to who will handle their punt and kickoff return chores. "I definitely think I left on bad terms. Everybody was still cool with me, but I did feel like I had some unfinished business," Davis said. Davis was solidly in the mix for the Titans return job and playing time at wide receiver during OTAs and the early part of training camp. However, a hamstring injury in preseason, combined with a DUI arrest in August, led to his release. ..."
O-line holds the keys to CJ's 2,000 yards
"Chris Johnson is promising his blockers cars if he can gain 2,000 yards this season. / Mike Strasinger for The City Paper When Chris Johnson breaks a long run, the Tennessee Titans offensive linemen are certainly glad to be along for the ride. Johnson revealed on Wednesday that if he reaches 2,000 yards this season, then all his linemen will have a new ride to celebrate the milestone with him. Johnson, who currently leads the NFL with 824 yards rushing, said would buy cars for his linemen if he cracks the 2,000 barrier. "It's a goal of mine," Johnson said. "It's a real goal of the offensive line, because I told them that if I get 2,000 yards, I'd buy them all cars. So they're really trying ..."
Two former Bears to meet as coaches
"During a conference call with Nashville media on Wednesday, Singletary remembered Fisher as a player who was close to Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan. "He got hurt a few times and he became the guy that Buddy really gravitated towards as a future coach," Singletary said. "Buddy couldn't get away from him." Fisher said he remembered the talk when Singletary was drafted in the second round out of Baylor in 1981, the year Fisher was selected in the seventh round out of Southern California."
Chris Johnson offers cars for yards
"Titans running back Chris Johnson has plenty of incentive to get to 2,000 rushing yards. Only five NFL players have done it. Johnson, named AFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, said he thinks his offensive linemen want the milestone even more. "It's a goal of mine," he said. "It's really a goal of the offensive linemen because I told them if I get to 2,000 yards I'd buy them all a car. They want me to get 2,000 yards more than I want to get it.'' The second-year pro leads the NFL in rushing with 824 yards through seven games after racking up a franchise-record 228 last Sunday against the Jaguars. At his current pace, Johnson would finish just short of 2,000 yards. But with more ..."

49ers rushing defense faces a huge test: Tennessee's Chris Johnson
"The 49ers rushing defense has withstood Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson and Michael Turner. Now, Chris Johnson gets his shot. The Tennessee Titans tailback is coming off a franchise-record 228 rushing yards, including touchdown runs of 52 and 89 yards. By now, the 49ers are accustomed to the challenge. They have faced three of the NFL's top 10 rushers this season. Next up: No. 1. Johnson averages 6.92 yards per carry, the highest average by an NFL rushing leader through Week 8 since 1970. "He's a great running back," 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown said. "He's got speed. He's a strong guy. "You look at the film, and it's not one guy bringing him down. We have to gang tackle him as a ..."
Titans' Johnson earns AFC honor
"Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Sunday's 30-13 victory over Jacksonville. Johnson rushed for a franchise record 228 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Titans earned their first victory of the season. Johnson leads the NFL in rushing with 824 yards this season."
Receiver Davis re-signs with Titans
"Wide receiver Chris Davis has been re-signed by the Tennessee Titans to help with their return game. Davis was waived in training camp a few days after being arrested by Nashville Metro Police on Aug. 22 while the Titans were in Dallas for a preseason game, and he was out of the lineup with a hamstring injury. Cornerback Cary Williams was waived by the Titans to make room for Davis on the 53-man roster, but could be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers. Davis, a fourth-round pick in 2007 out of Florida State, had played well during organized team activities and looked to be solidly in the mix for the kickoff and punt return jobs with the Titans as well as perhaps earning ..."
Titans like Vince Young's progress
"No one is exactly sure what the future holds for Titans quarterback Vince Young, but Coach Jeff Fisher is happy with the here and now. Young started for the first time since September 2008 and led a 30-13 win over the Jaguars on Sunday, getting the Titans into the win column after a 0-6 start. "This is the first start he's had where he has not had a sack or interception, and I think that shows - we are hoping that shows - that he has learned from this experience,'' Fisher said Monday. "He has learned to take what's there, take the check-down, get rid of the ball or take off when it is time to go take off. We've said all along he was developing.''"
Drew runs big, but Jaguars are run over
"This wasn't just losing a football game. This was more of an embarrassment for the Jaguars. The hallmark of a coach Jack Del Rio team is stopping the run. But the Tennessee Titans ran through the Jaguars Sunday as if they were tackling dummies. The Titans ran for 305 yards, including 228 yards by Chris Johnson, to rout the Jaguars 30-13. Both the 305 total yards and Johnson's 228-yard effort were records against the Jaguars. The Titans came in with a 0-6 record and had lost to the Jaguars 37-17 on Oct. 4, but the oddsmakers who installed the Titans as favorites turned out to have an accurate reading on the two teams. The Jaguars wasted 80 and 79-yard touchdown runs by running back Maurice ..."
Titans feeling vindicated by quarterback change
"Next, maybe we can persuade Kenneth Stanley "Bud" Adams Jr. to tackle the health-care debate. Or work on global warming. Or see what he can do about the war in Afghanistan. Look, if the 86-year-old Texas billionaire can fix what ailed the Tennessee Titans, why not let him get down to business on some of the world's other ills? Bud's suggestion - make that edict - that Vince Young replace Kerry Collins at quarterback ignited a spark that had been missing in the six preceding Titans losses and triggered a 30-13 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday. For one day at least, the Titans looked like the team that had been projected as a Super Bowl contender, not the ragtag outfit that started the ..."
Titans taste victory at last
"Roughly 14 months ago, Titans quarterback Vince Young left LP Field on a cart, his body battered and ego bruised after being knocked out of the 2008 season opener against the Jaguars. He'd heard boos before he was injured. In the days that followed his emotions sent his career on a well- documented downward spiral. Many people wondered if he'd ever get another chance with the organization. On Sunday, Young got that chance. And in his first start since that fateful day, the scene as he left the field was far different. Fans chanted "VY" as he made his way into the tunnel, and Young raised his arms in celebration. Moments earlier he'd jumped into a teammate's arms. At least for a day, Young ..."
Titans rout Jags, finally end losing streak
"For six weeks, the Tennessee Titans had been going backwards. On Sunday, they went back to doing the things that had made them successful in seasons past, leading to a 30-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and finally ending a losing streak that had reached eight games dating to the end of last season. While all the attention was on Vince Young's return at quarterback, running back Chris Johnson stole the show with a new franchise record 228 yards rushing in helping the Titans to finally crack the win column in 2009 and also to help erase a bit of the stench of a record 59-0 loss at New England just before the bye. The changes came from the top, where owner Bud Adams, displeased with ..."
Johnson enjoys record-setting day for Titans
"It's not often a running back goes for 177 yards and gets upstaged. But that's exactly what Titans star Chris Johnson did to his Jacksonville Jaguars counterpart Maurice Jones-Drew in Sunday's 30-13 Tennessee victory at LP Field. Jones-Drew had just eight carries in the game, but scored on runs of 80 and 79 yards in averaging 22.1 yards per run on Sunday in putting up his 177-yard total. Impressive to be sure, but still short of the totals put up by Johnson, who had a franchise-record 228 yards on the ground on 24 carries, including touchdown runs of 52 yards and 89 yards in the second half to seal Tennessee's first victory of the season, 30-13 against the Jaguars. The efforts of Johnson ..."
Young easily passes first test
"VY is still Bud Adams' guy, especially after a solid effort on Sunday that gave the struggling Tennessee Titans their first victory of the season after an 0-6 start. Young was plenty solid, playing efficient football and managing the game with few errors, especially given his rustiness from going 14 months between starts. Young completed 15 of 18 passes for 125 yards and threaded the needle on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Nate Washington, marking Tennessee's first touchdown in three weeks as part of Sunday's 30-13 victory over the Jaguars. "He managed the game well. ... He made some great throws," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. Adams, who has been one of Young's biggest supporters since the ..."
Baffling Jaguars find a new way to lose
"At the postgame podium, ex-NFL linebacker Jack Del Rio had a glazed look of total bewilderment. Though he hasn't absorbed a hit on the field in nearly 14 years, a clear-headed Del Rio was still at a loss to explain how his Jaguars find ways to bottom out. Seriously, coach, what was that abominable display at LP Field on Sunday? How could the Jaguars seize all the momentum from the Tennessee Titans, tying the game on running back Maurice Jones-Drew's second spectacular home run touchdown, and then go … Pfttttt! The Jaguars went from a Josh Scobee extra point of taking the lead, which was snuffed out by the Titans' Michael Griffin, to a meltdown over the final 29 minutes that resulted in a ..."
Jaguars' defense running on empty
"It was a record-breaking performance by the Jaguars' defense. But not the kind to brag about. More embarrassing than anything else. Jacksonville held opposing running backs to no more than 83 yards rushing in one outing through the first six games. Then Tennessee's Chris Johnson nearly tripled that to force his way into Jacksonville's record books Sunday while leading the Titans to a 30-13 drubbing. Jacksonville's run defense gave up a franchise-record for team yardage (305) and individual yardage as Johnson ran for 228 yards (9.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. Johnson also set the record for the longest touchdown run from scrimmage against the Jags (89 yards) with his TD in the ..."
Sorry Seven didn't get parity invitations
"The bottom is falling out of the NFL this season. Every year there is a handful of really bad teams at the bottom. This year, however, there aren't just two, three or four dregs in the NFL. There are seven. For the first time since 1970, there are two 0-7 teams and one 0-6 team. Only once in the last 40 years — in 1985 — had there been three 0-6 teams. The Sorry Seven right now comprises: St. Louis (0-7), Tampa Bay (0-7), Tennessee (0-6), Cleveland (1-6), Kansas City (1-6), Detroit (1-5) and Oakland (2-5). We'll have to see if any other teams spiral downward and join this group. The increasing number of blowouts is another sign of the bad getting worse. Last week six of 13 games were ..."
More shuffling doesn't help Jags' offensive line
"Players complained earlier this season about a musical-chairs situation along the offensive line. It's likely those rumblings will continue after the Jaguars' 30-13 loss at Tennessee. The Jaguars offensive line struggled once again in the face of heavy Titans pressure Sunday, giving up three sacks as David Garrard threw two interceptions and finished with the second-lowest passer rating (35.9) of his career. Before the game, the Jaguars announced that Tra Thomas would start at left tackle in place of rookie Eugene Monroe. The change represented the fourth lineup on the o-line through seven games. "Tra played exceptionally well the last time against [Tennessee]. We feel like that was a ..."

Vince Young gives Titans look of a winner

Jaguars at 3-3. Overrated or underrated?
"There's no way to anticipate which Jaguars team you'll see today when they face the Tennessee Titans at LP Field. Will it be the scrappy, young team that lost to undefeated Indianapolis by two points in the opener, beat Houston on the road, and blasted the Titans 37-17 in the teams' last meeting? Or will fans see the Jags that suffered embarrassing blowout losses to Arizona and Seattle? Or the team that overcame self-inflicted wounds to topple a winless Rams team, in part, by virtue of an overtime coin toss? Simply put, how good are the Jaguars? Based on the team's six games thus far, nobody really knows. "We're a team that's capable, a team that's improving, a team that's committed and ..."
Titans sign return man Pearman
"Looking for help in the return game, the Tennessee Titans have signed veteran return man Alvin Pearman to a two-year contract on Friday. The Titans had a need for a return man again because of Mark Jones' hamstring injury and placed the former University of Tennessee star on injured reserve. It appears he could have the opportunity to take over the return job immediately for the Titans, who wanted an experienced return man to fill in for Jones. "It's an opportunistic league, and the ones that can take advantage of those opportunities are the ones that can last. I want to do what is expected of me and then some," Pearman said. "I've been doing it my whole life, and I'm very comfortable back ..."
Titans sign former Jaguar Pearman; Jones going on IR
"The Titans have signed former Jaguars running back Alvin Pearman to help out in the return game. Pearman was one of three players to work out for the Titans on Thursday, and he ended up staying in town. On Friday morning he agreed to terms with the team and could be used against his old team on Sunday. To make room on the 53-man roster, the Titans will place Mark Jones on Injured Reserve, according to the player's agent. Jones suffered a hamstring injury last week in practice. "It's going to be a 4-6 week injury,'' agent Brian Levy said. "He's disappointed. He thought it could help there and he did for a while.''"
A tale of two teams and two quarterbacks
"Alex Smith has a rough assignment for his first start at quarterback in nearly two years, facing an Indianapolis team that has won its last 15 regular-season games, and more specifically Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney, two of the best pass rushers in the league. But at least he isn't confronting melodrama and intramural politics. Vince Young, the other young, highly drafted quarterback reclaiming a long-lost starting job this weekend, has a lot more to overcome - and not just because he's taking over a winless team that lost its last game 59-0. Titans owner Bud Adams complicated an already difficult situation by revealing publicly that he told his coaching staff that he wanted to see ..."
Titans look again for kick returner
"The Titans are looking at their options for a return man again because Mark Jones has a left hamstring injury. Jones said he wouldn't be able to play Sunday against the Jaguars. He suffered the injury during the bye week and aggravated it again during practice on Wednesday. The Titans worked out three players on Thursday and could sign one in time for Sunday's game. It's also possible that the Titans place Jones on injured reserve. "I am just going to try and get better. Whatever decision they make I am going to be fine with and I am going to try and get back as soon as possible,'' Jones said. "It's all up in the air right now. We're not sure right now.''"
Vince Young returning to face Jaguars
"The Vince Young experiment continues where - and against the same team - it originally ended when the winless Titans play host to the Jaguars at LP Field on Sunday. Having basically placed the quarterback on hiatus as a starter for 20 of Tennessee's past 21 games when the teams met in September 2008, Titans coach Jeff Fisher announced Thursday that Young had regained the starting job. The Jaguars weren't surprised. "We figured all along that coach Fisher would start one of the two on the roster," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio joked upon hearing the news. Fisher's move ends speculation about Tennessee's quarterback situation, sparked in part by the club's surprising 0-6 start and exacerbated ..."
Koetter ready to mix it up
"In their 37-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 4, Jaguars running backs had just five carries in the first half as Jacksonville jumped out to a 27-3 lead. That doesn't mean the Jaguars will use the same pass-first strategy against the Titans on Sunday. "I think every game unfolds differently," Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. "You go into every game as a play-caller hoping to be able to run it and throw it. "There's just so many variables that go into how the game unfolds." Jaguars quarterback David Garrard threw 25 times in the first meeting between the Jaguars and Titans, but Koetter didn't call that many pass plays. "Some of those are run plays that Dave ..."
Intrigue at QB ensnares Titans
"VY is Bud's guy. Again. From his Galleria-area office, Titans owner Bud Adams ordered quarterback Vince Young back into the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. And why not? The Titans couldn't be worse. Young is 18-11 as a starter, and he can't do worse than Kerry Collins. Despite the Titans' 0-6 start, coach Jeff Fisher preferred to stick with Collins as his starter, but the hammer came down from Houston. Fisher, who has been with the organization since 1994, knows Adams well enough not to forget the golden rule of business: He who has the gold rules. Adams told the Tennessean two weeks ago that Fisher would be evaluated after the season. Adams fired Oilers coach Bum ..."
Titans turn reins over to Vince Young
"Kerry Collins has a hunch about why it happened. He doesn't like it, but that doesn't matter. Vince Young doesn't care about the reason. He's just happy he has his old job back, and a second chance. The Titans pulled a U-turn at quarterback on Thursday — Collins is out and Young is in beginning with Sunday's game against the Jaguars at LP Field. Coach Jeff Fisher said the move is long-term. As the Titans try and make something out of a 0-6 start, Young will be at the controls, fulfilling the wish — and ultimately the command — of owner Bud Adams. So Young, the third overall pick of the 2006 draft, will once again be on full display come Sunday. "I'm still in Kerry Collins' corner because I ..."
Titans to start Vince Young against Jaguars
"The Vince Young era will resume on Sunday when the Titans play the Jaguars at LP Field. Coach Jeff Fisher will announce later today that Young will replace veteran Kerry Collins as the starting quarterback, according to sources familiar with the situation. Fisher could not immediately be reached for comment. Young, Collins and Fisher are expected to speak with reporters after practice, which is scheduled to begin at noon. The quarterback switch comes a few days after Titans owner Bud Adams informed the coaching staff he wants Young to start immediately. Young, the team's first-round draft pick in 2006, has played sparingly since last September's season-opener against the Jaguars. Collins ..."
Titans DB duo uses bye week to recover
"If the Titans are fortunate, their defense will welcome two key players back to practice this week. Starting cornerback Cortland Finnegan (hamstring) and nickelback Vincent Fuller (broken forearm) stayed in town over the bye week to receive treatment for their injuries, but Coach Jeff Fisher would only say both players are progressing. Finnegan and Fuller last played Sept. 27 against the Jets. "They would bring the experience back, the anticipation, the experience and the communication things," Fisher said. "I think the safeties would be a little more settled, if you will, to have guys they've been playing alongside with for several years back on the field." Not expected back in time for ..."
Kerry Collins or Vince Young: It's decision day for Titans
"Justin Gage is like the rest of the Titans right now. The veteran receiver knows a change at quarterback could be in store for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. "I shouldn't say I sense it, but I think it is in the air right now,'' Gage said on Wednesday. "I am not sure how it is going to play out or what is going to go on. But as far as receivers, we have to be prepared for either quarterback.'' Plenty of signs point to a switch from starter Kerry Collins to backup Vince Young, although Coach Jeff Fisher said he wouldn't announce his decision until today, citing "competitive reasons." Things were noticeably different on Wednesday, however, when the Titans got back to work after their bye ..."
Titans rookie injured during practice
"Titans rookie running back Javon Ringer was injured in practice Wednesday and was carted off the field. Later, an ambulance arrived at Baptist Sports Park and took Ringer to the hospital. Coach Jeff Fisher said it appeared to be a lower back or hip injury. "We'll have to check him out,'' Fisher said. "It could be any number of things and it would be unfair for me to speculate right now. He is obviously in some pain." Ringer was a fifth round draft pick by the Titans this year out of Michigan State. He has seven carries for 47 yards."
Fisher to reveal Titans' QB plans on Thursday
"Justin Gage is like the rest of the Titans right now. The receiver knows there could be a change at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. “I shouldn’t say I sense it, but I think it is in the air right now,’’ Gage said Wednesday. “I am not sure how it is going to play out or what is going to go on. But … we have to be prepared for either quarterback.’’ So will it be Kerry Collins or Vince Young? Coach Jeff Fisher said he plans to announce the starter on Thursday. The coach declined to go into specifics about how reps were divided in Wednesday’s practice, and for the first time this season Collins and Young were off limits to reporters. So was offensive coordinator Mike ..."
Titans add QB Booty to practice squad
"The Tennessee Titans have added quarterback John David Booty to their practice squad and waived running back Lance Ball. Booty was with the Minnesota Vikings, but was let go after they signed Brett Favre. He spent time on Minnesota's practice squad as well."
Titans add QB Booty to practice squad
"The Titans on Wednesday signed quarterback John David Booty to the team's practice squad. Booty, who played at Southern Cal, was released by the Minnesota Vikings. He'll take the place of running back Lance Ball, who was released from the practice squad on Tuesday."
Titans sign ex-Broncos punter
"The Titans will return from the bye week with at least one lineup change. Punter Reggie Hodges was released Tuesday, and Brett Kern, who lost his job earlier this week in Denver, was signed to take his place. This season in Denver, Kern averaged 46.1 yards per punt, but ranked mere 29th in the NFL in net average (34.5). Last Monday against San Diego, Kern had a punt returned 77 yards for a touchdown. In 2008, Kern ranked fifth overall (46.7) in the league in gross average. Hodges averaged 39.5 yards (33rd in the league) during his four-game tenure with the Titans, but his net average (31.8) was last among the 34 punters listed in league statistics. Hodges replaced injured Titans veteran ..."
Titans claim punter Kern off waivers
"The Tennessee Titans claimed punter Brett Kern off waivers from the Denver Broncos and waived punter Reggie Hodges. Kern, a second-year player, ranks fifth in the NFL in gross average last year at 46.7 yards per punt and is averaging 46.1 yards in gross average this year."
