Kevin Mawae shows patience following elbow surgery
"Since suffering a serious right elbow injury last December, Titans center Kevin Mawae has talked about the elbow, had surgery on the elbow, and spent countless hours rehabbing the elbow. And as the team went through its June minicamp, he talked about the elbow some more. He hasn't snapped a football with it, however. Still, Mawae continues to say he's on track to return for training camp. "It was a six-month recovery time, and it was a major surgery and trainers and doctors feel good about it. … I have never been this late in the offseason rehabbing before. So mentally I am working through that,'' Mawae said recently. "But the wait-and-see part is what is going to happen the next (several ..."
Swimming keeps Titans' David Thornton flexible
"After seven NFL seasons - and 749 tackles - David Thornton's body has some scars to show for his work. Yet at the age of 30, the Titans linebacker said, he still feels good - for the most part. "I've held up pretty well,'' Thornton said with a smile. "But the game definitely takes a toll on you. That's the nature of the game and the position. The key is to keep preparing yourself for what's ahead.'' The player some describe as a "workout warrior" added something to his workout regimen this offseason, something he hopes will pay off this fall and beyond: swimming, and plenty of it. Maybe you've seen him at the local YMCA, where he hired a swim coach. While Thornton still is hitting the ..."
Titans, TE Cook agree to terms
"The Titans agreed to terms with tight end Jared Cook on Thursday, according to sources familiar with the situation. Cook, the team's third round draft pick, agreed to a four-year deal with the team that includes a signing bonus of roughly $700,000. Cook's deal also includes rookie minimums of $310,000 in 2009, $395,000 (in 2010), $480,000 (in '11), and $565,000 (in '12). Cook, who played at South Carolina, becomes the 7th player from the Titans' 11-man draft class to reach a deal with the team. The 6-5, 246-pounder has arguably been the most impressive of the team's draft picks this offseason. He's lined up at tight end and receiver and made a number of impressive catches."
LenDale White won't let his fork get in way of football
"LenDale White has come too far to blow it now - he promises. Since the end of last season, the Titans running back has remained on a strict diet and been loyal to the team's offseason conditioning program. The results have shown up in his shrinking waistline, as well as on the scale - he weighed in at 229 pounds last week. But with minicamps now a thing of the past and training camp not set to begin until July 31, there's plenty of time for him to balloon, of course. Heaping barbecue plates will certainly be calling his name at Fourth of July cookouts … "It's not going to happen,'' White said, shaking his head at the suggestion. "I am not going to let it all go to waste, not the way I ..."
Titans rank among the country's best pro sports experiences
"The Tennessee Titans are ranked No. 15 in an upcoming ESPN The Magazine article, which explores 'The Ultimate Standings' - a ranking of every franchise in the four major professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL). The ranking represented a major improvement for the Titans, who were 50th a year ago. The jump was largely attributed to the improvement on the field last season under quarterback Kerry Collins and top-notch defense. Tennessee was fourth overall among NFL franchises behind only Pittsburgh (No. 3), Green Bay (No. 13) and Indianapolis (No. 14). Southern California, oddly, covered the spectrum with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (MLB) rated as the top pro sports ..."
Titans sign third-round cornerback
"Cornerback Ryan Mouton and the Tennessee Titans agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth just over $2.4 million with escalators that could make the package worth as much as $3 million. Mouton, a third-round pick from Hawaii, has incentives that are tied to playing time and team performance that can boost the overall value of the deal. The first-year bonus of the contract is in line with last year's third-round slotting, and is worth between $655,000 and $675,000. Mouton became the second Titans rookie to agree to a deal on Tuesday, joining fourth-round linebacker Gerald McRath. That brings the total number of draft picks in the fold to six of the 11-member 2009 draft class. Mouton is ..."
Titans sign rookie linebacker
"The Tennessee Titans and rookie linebacker Gerald McRath have agreed to terms on a four-year contract, making him the fifth member of the Titans 2009 draft class to agree to a rookie contract. McRath, the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 for Southern MIssissippi, was chosen in the fourth round by the Titans with the 130th overall pick in the draft. He started 25 of 36 career games for the Golden Eagles, and recorded 386 career tackles. Other Titans rookies who have agreed to deals include receiver Dominique Edison, defensive backs Jason McCourty and Nick Schommer and offensive lineman Ryan Durand."
Toss out the Titans stat sheets
"Even while the Tennessee Titans this off-season have sought to upgrade their wide receiving corps, the group is relatively inexperienced when it comes to track record and NFL statistics. At the top of the team's list are veteran holdover Justin Gage and newcomer Nate Washington, who comes over from Pittsburgh as a free agent signing. Elsewhere, the group has a TOTAL of 29 NFL receptions. Whether that makes it easier or harder for coaches to assess the group is debatable, but none can rest on their laurels. And there won't be a spot for everybody with "pass catcher" on their resume. CRACKING THE CORPS Here is a rundown of what the Titans have in camp at receiver. Justin Gage - The leader ..."
Titans' Davis says it's time to impress, not stress
"Chris Davis is not delusional. The third-year wide receiver knows that time is ticking on his Tennessee Titans career. To his credit, Davis is doing something about it. During the team's May and June organized team activities, Davis has not only caught the eye of media onlookers as much improved, but more importantly, the eyes of the coaching staff he needs to impress in order to hold on to his roster spot. "That never goes away," Davis said of his concern to retain a spot on the 53-man roster, "because if you're not the one or the two, you're always worried about your roster spot. This is a real big season for me." When Justin McCareins and Brandon Jones departed via free agency, Davis ..."
Keith Bulluck reflects on 9 seasons of highs, lows with Titans
"In the Titans' locker room he's known as Mr. Monday Night and King of the One-Liners, and heading into his 10th NFL season, linebacker Keith Bulluck has pretty much seen it all. He joined the Titans as a first-round pick in 2000, so he missed playing in Super Bowl XXXIV by a year but has had to agonize over several near misses. He's has played for some really good teams — five that went to playoffs — and some really bad ones — back-to-back seasons of 5-11 and 4-12. He's played alongside teammates ranging from Steve McNair to Eddie George to Pacman Jones to Vince Young. Through it all, Bulluck has been one of the most consistent players in the NFL. He has started 113 consecutive games. He ..."
Johnson bills himself as 'entertaining'
"Titans running back Chris Johnson made it clear this week he wants to be known as "Every Coach's Dream.'' Based on the feedback he's received since coming up with his new nickname, however, he fears fans might have the wrong idea about him. "Smash and Dash'' - the nickname for LenDale White and Johnson last season - might be a thing of the past, but Johnson said he's still the same guy, someone who's just having a little fun. "I know people are saying I want to be an individual, that I'm not a team guy,'' Johnson said Friday. "All I want is a new nickname, and it's in fun. I am an entertaining guy. I like guys like Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson (Ochocinco) and the entertainment they bring ..."
Trio of Titans rookies emerging
"Kenny Britt. Ryan Mouton. Gerald McRath. For various reasons, those three rookies appear to have the opportunity to make the quickest impact for the Titans this season. Britt, the first-round pick, knows that means developing in training camp and the regular season until he is ready to handle a bigger workload or challenge for a starting job at wide receiver. Mouton will contribute as a backup cornerback and nickel back, adding depth to both positions. He will also compete for various roles on special teams, including return man. McRath is not ready to jump on the field in front of the top linebackers, but like Mouton he is expected to play special teams as he learns his defensive ..."
Johnson bills himself as 'entertaining guy'

Johnson: I'm a team guy first
"Chris Johnson says he admires the antics of Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, and just this week asked for fans to send celebration suggestions to try and one-up the controversial stars. But Johnson, who also publicly announced his "divorce" from Smash and Dash with LenDale White, saying he his nickname is now "Every Coach's Dream," insists that whatever he does in terms of drawing attention to himself that he remains a team guy first and foremost for the Tennessee Titans. "They're entertainers. I love those guys. I love Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens. That inspires me," Johnson said. "I'm a team guy first. When I mentioned I wanted a divorce from Smash and Dash, I never said I didn't ..."
Titans, WR Edison agree to terms
"The Titans have agreed to terms with receiver Dominique Edison on a rookie contract. Edison, a sixth round pick in April's NFL Draft, becomes the fourth member of the team's 2009 draft class to reach a deal. Earlier this week the Titans agreed to terms with guard Ryan Durand (7th round) and cornerback Jason McCourty (6th). Safety Nick Schommer (7th round) reached a deal with the team last week."
Titans close OTAs with 'fun' work day
"Organized team activities ended not so organized for the Tennessee Titans on Friday. Coach Jeff Fisher and strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson decided to dispense with the normal practice routine for the last OTA and instead allowed the players to spend time playing an assortment of games. One game, called powerball, had trash cans set at the 20-yard lines on two different field with offense against defense with the object being to move the football downfield and get it inside the trash can. Powerball, a Watterson invention as part of off-season conditioning and competition, combines certain elements of ultimate Frisbee, soccer, basketball and lacrosse. The day's activities ..."
Titans' clock ticks on Henry's career
"Chris Henry landed with the Titans because of his blazing speed, but his world came to a screeching halt last season. The running back watched 16 of the 17 games from the sideline in street clothes. Calendar pages turned as if in slow motion. "Time is kind of relative to what is actually going on. Not playing the entire season last year, it went by slow for me,'' Henry said. "If you are in games and playing, it flies by. … My goal this year is to make the season go by a lot faster.'' There's one thing Henry doesn't want to consider, though it's something that can't be ignored: He might not make it to the season. Henry was a second-round pick in 2007, but his future with the Titans is in ..."

Independence hires former Titan Kevin Dyson as assistant
"Independence has added former Titans receiver Kevin Dyson and former Page Coach Jackie Bennett as assistant football coaches. Dyson will coach defensive backs and receivers, and Bennett will be the defensive coordinator. "Kevin's presence is great for our program, and even better for our players," Eagles Coach Jason Eubanks said. "He has great ideas and has a tremendous ability to bring out the best in players. We are thrilled to have him in our program." Dyson is also working as an intern with the Titans, helping receivers coach Fred Graves - his position coach at Utah. Dyson, 34, was an assistant at Glencliff during the previous two seasons. Bennett resigned as Page's coach after the ..."
Bulluck receives cowboy hat from Tim McGraw
"For the second time in a week, linebacker Keith Bulluck was showing off a present at his locker. But this gift had nothing to do with the Pittsburgh Steelers, like the Terrible Towel Bulluck unveiled last week. This was a black cowboy hat, courtesy of country music star Tim McGraw, and fulfilled a promise made approximately a year-and-a-half ago at the 2007 Country Music Awards. "I asked him where could I get a hat like that. He said, 'I'll have to get one made for you,'" Bulluck said. "I just asked him. He was sitting in front of me, and it's not too often you get an opportunity to meet a guy like that. I just asked him where can I get a hat like that?" McGraw is familiar with ..."
Gage can't wait to pick up where he left off
"Justin Gage can't wait for the 2009 season to begin. After the way he finished 2008, who could blame him. Gage had just 34 catches in the regular season, but between knee and hamstring issues missed four full games and was limited in at least two others. But once he finally returned healthy in the second half of the season, no Tennessee Titans receiver was more productive than the six-year veteran. Gage turned in a pair of 100-yard games in the regular season, and when Chris Johnson was lost with an ankle injury in the playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Gage became the Titans' weapon of choice, hauling in 10 passes for 135 yards that day. In all, he averaged 19.1 yards per catch in ..."
Johnson takes heat over new nickname
"Titans Coach Jeff Fisher isn't sure if his Pro Bowl running back fits his new, self-proclaimed nickname. "Every Coach's Dream?" Fisher said with a smile Wednesday. "Maybe with a few exceptions - playing the bongos … and getting hurt in the playoff game." Ouch. One day after Chris Johnson killed the "Smash and Dash" nickname he shared with fellow running back LenDale White, and branched out on his own with "Every Coach's Dream," there were plenty of one-liners. Fisher got in on the banter with digs at Johnson for his ankle injury in last season's playoff loss to the Ravens and for his drum-banging touchdown celebration against the Chiefs that resulted in a penalty flag and a fine. Johnson ..."
Titans will wait to settle on their top return man
"The race to replace return man Chris Carr will have to wait until Titans training camp. This offseason has been about the basics: gathering the candidates and watching them field kicks and punts. The true competition will start when camp begins July 31. "All we can do right now is see who's natural at catching and make sure that they're able to do what we need done as far as knowing where the ball is going to come down when it's kicked," Titans special teams coach Alan Lowry said. There are long lists of applicants to join Lowry's kickoff return unit, which ranked first in the NFL last season with an average of 25.4 yards per play, and the punt return team, which averaged 9.7 yards. Carr ..."
Smash and Dash 'feud' continues with Titans running backs
"It was reaction day for the phantom feud between running backs Chris Johnson and LenDale White on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a report saying Johnson no longer wanted to team with White as part of the "Smash and Dash" duo surfaced. Wednesday the two teammates fanned the flames a bit more for the cameras present. Johnson, who said he wants to be known now as "Every Coach's Dream," explained his position and also is now soliciting suggestions via Twitter for end zone celebrations for 2009. "Every coach wants a player that if they're sitting at home watching him says, 'I wish I could have that player. I feel I'm Every Coach's Dream,'" Johnson said. "Just tell him [White] that he will never be ..."
Titans' top pick has taken only small steps
"The ball is snapped and the wide receiver jukes past the cornerback, adjusts his route as the safety slides over and knifes inside before catching a Kerry Collins bullet. Kenny Britt takes it all in - from a distance. "Even if I'm just watching, I'm still getting to know the offense," he says. Yes, but there is only so much you can learn by watching. For a rookie wide receiver like Britt, the college-to-pro learning curve is steep enough if you're participating in every drill and taking every allotted snap. When you're an interested bystander with a tender hamstring, it's a reach. The problem is compounded by the high expectations attached to Britt. He was the Titans' No. 1 draft pick. He ..."
Marks adjusting to NFL
"Rookie Sen'Derrick Marks is extremely talented and full of potential, Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn said. He's also lost - unsure at times of what to do and just as important, how to do it. Marks is not the first Titans rookie defensive lineman to initially struggle, however. Jevon Kearse did. So did Albert Haynesworth. Both players later signed two of the richer contracts for defensive players. Haynesworth is gone, opting to take a $100 million contract from the Redskins, but Kearse, Kyle Vanden Bosch and others are still here, ready to teach Marks all they can about defensive line play. "I hope to fit in right behind them and learn as I go," said Marks, who played two years at ..."
Johnson trades in 'Dash' for 'Dream'
"The days of "Smash and Dash" are over, at least in Nashville. Chris Johnson said Tuesday he is branching out, leaving fellow Titans running back LenDale White to find his own nickname. Johnson, in fact, has already found a new moniker - "Every Coach's Dream.'' White might be leaning toward calling himself "Every Opposing Coach's Nightmare'' - at least that was his first reaction when told about Johnson's declaration of alias independence. "Smash and Dash have had a divorce - that's official,'' Johnson said. "I have to be my own guy, so no more Smash and Dash, that was last year. Every Coach's Dream, that's me. Because they say every team has its own identity. I feel for me, I can't be ..."
Titans' Johnson taking celebration suggestions
"The latest rage not only among NFL players but society in general is Twitter, which allows people snippets of the goings on in their lives for anyone who has an account to see. Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is among those who has recently caught on to the Twitter craze. On his account, ChrisJohnson28, the Titans running back is soliciting fans suggestions for end zone celebrations that can rival those of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco and Buffalo Bills star wideout Terrell Owens. Last season, Johnson etched his name into the conversation of best end zone celebrations by playing the bongo drums after a long touchdown run against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was fined ..."
Titans agree to terms with two more draft picks
"The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with two more 2009 draft picks on Tuesday, signing sixth-round cornerback Jason McCourty and seventh-round guard Ryan Durand. Both players agreed to four-year contracts, as did safety Nick Schommer, who agreed to his deal last week. McCourty, a sixth round selection (203rd overall) from Rutgers, was a three-year starter and a senior captain. Durand also was a three-year starter for Syracuse and started 35 games at right guard."
Johnson trades in 'Dash' for 'Dream'
"The days of "Smash and Dash" are over, at least in Nashville. Chris Johnson said he is branching out on his own, leaving fellow Titans running back LenDale White to find his own nickname. Johnson, in fact, has already found another one for himself - "Every Coach's Dream.'' "Smash and Dash have had a divorce - that's official,'' Johnson said after Tuesday's minicamp practice at Baptist Sports Park. "I have to be my own guy, so no more Smash and Dash, that was last year. Every Coach's Dream, that's me. Because they say every team has its own identity. I feel for me, I can't be noticed as a group any more. I am my own guy.'' There have been no indications of a falling out between Smash ..."
WR Williams suffers groin injury in OTA work
"The Titans finished practice short a pair of wide receivers on Tuesday, as Paul Williams left with a groin injury making a nice grab in the end zone of a Kerry Collins pass in one-on-one drills. Also, rookie first-round pick Kenny Britt was out of practice as well after re-injuring his right hamstring moments before Williams suffered the groin injury. Britt originally suffered the hamstring injury in May OTAs, and had a minor setback last week, but was able to finish practice. According to Coach Jeff Fisher, Britt will try to test the hamstring during Wednesday's practice. The news isn't as good for Williams, however, who is likely shelved for the remaining OTAs this week. "Unfortunately, ..."

Titans agree to terms with two rookies
"The Titans plan to announce rookie contracts later today for wide receiver Dominique Edison and offensive lineman Ryan Durand, general manager Mike Reinfeldt said this morning. They will be the second and third players from the team's 11-man draft class of 2009 to join the fold. Edison was a sixth-round pick from Stephen F. Austin and Durand was a seventh-round pick from Syracuse. Both agreed to four-year deals."
Crumpler starts 'coaching' career
"Alge Crumpler went to North Carolina, Jared Cook to South Carolina. Crumpler entered the NFL as a run-blocking tight end, and Cook has been lauded for his athleticism and playmaking ability at the position. There remain big differences between these two Titans tight ends, including size and age - Crumpler has Cook by almost 10 years. But everyone agrees on one thing: Cook could learn a lot from Crumpler, who developed into a playmaker and became a four-time Pro Bowl selection. And so far the rookie is taking advantage of Crumpler's presence. "Crump is like a coach,'' said Cook, a third-round draft pick. "Crump has been around the league a long time and he just knows - he has a lot of ..."

Titans rookie admits he's a bit 'star struck'
"Rookie receiver Kenny Britt is a first-round draft choice with plenty of local hype surrounding his arrival with the Tennessee Titans. But Britt admits that he was still a bit 'star struck' inside the Titans locker room as he first arrived as a rookie. "I'm sitting next to millionaires. I call my father up and tell him that I'm chilling next to Vince Young, and told him about Nate Washington," Britt said with a smile. "I go home and show him my cell phone and who's in there. It's still sinking in." Britt was bothered by a hamstring tweak that limited him during the May OTAs, but he is able to do more now. Momentarily last week, it appeared that Britt had tweaked the hamstring again, but ..."
Titans main free agent receiver now digging his routes
"Tennessee Titans free agent receiver Nate Washington admitted during the May mini-camps that he was still in the process of learning the nuances of the offense after signing as a free agent from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, a month later with one more week of organized team activities to come, Washington says he is on target with his assignments and the timing of his routes with quarterback Kerry Collins. "It's pretty much all there. Now, I'm trying to get open better. I pretty much know where I'm supposed to be and know the timing of getting there," he said. "You're not going to be able to run the same route twice. Even in the same route, you have to switch it up a little bit. That's all ..."
Rookie looks up to 'coach' Crumpler in Titans camp
"Alge Crumpler has taken many a pass under his wing. Now, it's rookie Jared Cook. School is in session for Tennessee Titans tight end Jared Cook. And the rookie third-round pick has plenty of instructors to learn from during organized team activities and training camp, getting him ready for his first NFL season. Cook as the size (6-5, 250) and the speed that put him in the position to create potential mismatches deep down the middle of the field, and Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is sort of in hurry-up mode to get Cook involved in the offense, at least on a limited basis, sooner rather than later. "I've been learning that from Coach Heimerdinger, how to get off the jam and ..."
Ramsey sets sights on No. 2 QB job
"Patrick Ramsey knew when he signed with the Tennessee Titans that he was coming in as the No. 3 quarterback behind Kerry Collins and Vince Young. That doesn't me he intends to stay in that spot, though. Ramsey, who backed up Jay Cutler in Denver last year, signed a one-year free agent deal in Tennessee shortly after last year's third-stringer Chris Simms wound up with the Broncos in Ramsey's old spot in Denver as the No. 2 quarterback. With Simms, there was apparently the understanding that if he came back to Tennessee, he would get a legitimate chance to vie for the second spot behind Collins. So will Ramsey, who played for Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger in 2007, get the ..."
Titans hope to ride the 'O' line to Miami
"As a general rule, offensive line play is an anonymous occupation. Don't think so? Well, outside of Bruce Matthews, name a Titans' offensive lineman. It is said that, playing on the offensive line is somewhat like driving or officiating - you don't really notice it until something bad happens. But that isn't always the case - at least in terms of postseason honors, as Kevin Mawae and Michael Roos were both selected to the Pro Bowl and the NFL All-Pro team. And for a unit that was breaking in two new starters at guard in free agent Jake Scott on the right and former backup Eugene Amano on the left, 2008 was a banner season. Not only did the line help the Titans rush for 2,199 yards, it ..."
Jevon Kearse still has freakish passion for game
"Jevon Kearse recalls recent conversations with Titans fans when he talked about his motivation for playing this fall. "I hear a lot of people in the streets say, 'Ah man, you used to be my favorite player back when you were with the Titans,' " Kearse said. Used to be? He's back, and has been for more than year, he reminds them. This is why Kearse, once considered one of the NFL's best defensive playmakers as well as one of the most popular Titans players, is still playing a decade after earning defensive rookie of the year honors. He's playing for pride, playing so fans group his best days with his current portfolio. Sure, last season was an improvement from a rough ending with the Eagles, ..."
Don't count out Titans' Kearse
"Jevon Kearse recalls recent conversations with Titans fans when he talked about his motivation for playing this fall. Titans White proudly announces weight
"At the start of practice, LenDale White proudly asked media members to guess his weight. In the past, White and the Titans had guarded the number with such secrecy that you would have thought it was part of next week's game plan. When the guesses game in, one reporter's answer was right on the money, as White proudly gave up the right guess "234!" According to White, that is the number he will remain at for the season. "I'm 234 pounds, and I feel great," White said. "I feel like this is my best playing weight, and I feel healthy at this weight. I feel like I'm the fast and the strongest at this weight." White, who reported for off-season work at 238 pounds, said he hasn't been this low ..."
Titans defensive end sets goal of double-digit sacks
"William Hayes said he spent much of his rookie season with the Titans focused on the howls of his position coach instead of his defensive end duties. This summer the second-year pro from Winston-Salem State has rearranged his concentration to the field, which, ironically, has also minimized defensive line coach Jim Washburn's criticism. Never quick to offer kudos unless earned, Washburn said earlier this month that Hayes is vastly improved from where he was at the end of last season. No wonder Hayes has spent this offseason preparing for a breakout campaign, a season in which he will aim for double-digit sacks. A big goal? Sure, admitted Hayes, considered a raw talent when he was selected ..."

Bulluck shows off 'gift' from Steelers fan
"Keith Bulluck wanted to wait, but when the right question was asked, he couldn't help but show off a little present he received last February from an anonymous donor. Bulluck was asked a polite question about opening the 2009 season in primetime on Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then, a follow-up question was asked if Bulluck thought he was a marked man because he was one of three Titans players to be seen defacing the Steelers' fans yellow Terrible Towels after the Titans' 31-14 win at LP Field last season. Bulluck reached into the bottom of his locker and pulled out the "gift." It was an Official Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel from Super Bowl XXXIII, sent to Bulluck with a ..."
Titans' Collins enjoys his time at CMT Awards
"Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins might have been a little bit out of his element Tuesday night at the CMT Music Awards, but the old pro handled himself just fine.
