Jets' Pace suspended four games
"Jets linebacker Calvin Pace has been suspended without pay for the team's first four regular-season games of 2009 for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances. According to an NFL spokesperson, Pace's suspension begins Saturday, Sept. 5. He is eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Oct. 5 following the team's Oct. 4 game against the New Orleans Saints. Pace is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games. "This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the League's policy," Pace said in a statement released by the Jets. "I am responsible for what I put into ..."
Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth tested positive for marijuana, sources say
"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth tested positive for marijuana use after the car he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian, law enforcement sources have told the Miami Herald. Stallworth, 28, is serving a 30-day jail sentence as part of his penalty after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter on June 16. He was driving his Bentley when it struck and killed Mario Reyes, 59, on March 14 in Miami. Prosecutors said Stallworth's blood alcohol level of .126 was well above the legal limit when he was tested after the accident. The Herald reported Wednesday that, according to the unidentified sources, the test results also showed traces of marijuana. The results have not yet been ..."
Marshall rants at Denver during '07 arrest
"A statement Brandon Marshall made during his 2007 DUI arrest indicates the Denver Broncos wide receiver may have been interested in a trade long before the Broncos coaching change. According to an Oct. 22, 2007, Denver Police report, Marshall went on a rant about the city. "Why aren't you guys out looking for (Darrent) Williams' killer?" Marshall told a police officer after he was pulled over when he was caught weaving and driving the wrong way down 14th Street near Auraria Parkway. According to the police report, Marshall went on to say, "I hate Denver. I hope I get traded.""
Big Mac wants Patriots comeback
"Outside linebacker remains a big question mark for the Patriots heading into the 2009 season and it's possible the team could add another player at the position. Former Patriots outside linebacker Willie McGinest would like to be that player. In an interview with Albert Breer of Sporting News, the 37-year-old McGinest said he still has the itch to play and is training as if he will play a 16th NFL season. When asked if returning to New England would be best, McGinest said: "Yeah, I've talked to Tom (Brady), (Richard) Seymour and some other guys there. Those guys are lifelong friends, and I've heard some people say that it'd be a good fit. Why wouldn't you want to go to a really good ..."
It's time for the Giants to pay Eli
"Giants general manager Jerry Reese has a simple solution for replacing the hole that Plaxico Burress left in the offense. He thinks it's time for quarterback Eli Manning to take on more responsibility and lead this organization to another Super Bowl. In 2007, Manning caught lightning in a bottle for a little more than a month and helped lead the Giants to a world title. But with the loss of his combustible safety blanket, Burress, and a supporting cast comprised of talented but raw wide receivers, the Giants believe Manning can elevate his teammates to another level. The only problem with that approach from a management standpoint is that you're increasing your quarterback's bargaining ..."
Miami real estate developer to get vice chairman job
"Then, Emilio and Gloria Estefan. Now, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is adding prominent Miami real estate developer Jorge Perez, his close friend and longtime business partner, to the team's lineup. The Dolphins said Wednesday that Perez will be hired as one of the team's vice chairmen, joining Don Shula with that title. Perez also had discussions about becoming a minority owner, though those talks are not as advanced. ''I am talking with Ross about becoming vice chairman of the Dolphins and making a substantial investment in the football team as a partner,'' Perez said. ``But it's all subject to league approval.'' Mike Dee, the Dolphins' chief executive officer, said Perez's appointment to ..."
Jaguars' trade with Lions finalized
"The Jacksonville Jaguars made their trade with the Lions official on Tuesday, sending receiver Dennis Northcutt to Detroit in exchange for safety Gerald Alexander, the Jaguars announced. The rare player-for-player swap appears to fill pressing needs for both teams. Alexander, who suffered a fractured vertebra last season, passed a physical for the Jaguars on Monday, but it wasn't until Tuesday that satisfactory results came back from Northcutt's physical in Detroit. A second-round pick in 2007, Alexander is expected to bolster a relatively thin group of safeties led by starters Reggie Nelson and Sean Considine. In fact, Alexander could wind up becoming a bargain for the club. In just 21 ..."
Eli Ready to Lead Young Giants 'O'
"It was more a challenge than a reminder when general manager Jerry Reese said this offseason that Eli Manning is "not a veteran any more, he's a Pro Bowler -- we'll put some of this on his back." With so much talk about the tall and talented receivers the Giants lost, Reese wanted everyone to consider the great asset he believes Manning can and must be. "We're going to put more of the onus on him," Reese said. And how did Manning respond? "I think you got a quarterback going into his sixth year and . . . some young receivers," Manning told The Post yesterday. "It's my job to make sure those guys are on the same page and my job to be a leader and take control of the offense and the ..."
Willie McGinest considers return
"Free agent linebacker Willie McGinest continues to eye the Pats as a possible landing spot, the 15-year veteran linebacker told Albert Breer of sportingnews.com. McGinest, who was part of three Super Bowl championships with the Patriots [team stats] before leaving as a free agent for Cleveland in 2006, expressed his desire to play one more season. "Yeah, I've talked to (quarterback) Tom (Brady), (defensive end Richard) Seymour and some other guys there," McGinest said. "Those guys are lifelong friends, and I've heard some people say that it'd be a good fit. Why wouldn't you want to be a part of that? And with all the history I have, what we accomplished in the playoffs, that wouldn't be a ..."
CB Jenkins considers himself starter for Dallas Cowboys
"Mike Jenkins considers himself the Cowboys' starting right cornerback, according to a blog post on his Web site.Throughout organized team activities, second-year players Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick split work with the first-team defense while competing to start opposite Terence Newman. On Monday, Jenkins posted an entry titled "My Job to Keep" to www.mikejenkins 21.com."Heading into training camp, I'm the starter at right cornerback, and my job is to maintain that position," Jenkins' blog post read. "It's my job to lose, but there's a guy behind me with nothing to lose. If he makes a mistake, it's not going to cause him to lose his job. If I make a mistake, the coaches are going to take a ..."
Tedy Bruschi drills, thrills
"Even as the elder statesman on the Patriots, Tedy Bruschi always remains youthful and excited every football season. His eternal passion for the game was on full display yesterday at his second annual Youth Football Clinic, sponsored by Savings Bank Life Insurance. Bruschi, along with some friends and Patriots linebacker Jared Mayo, kicker Stephen Gostkowski, tight end David Thomas and special teamer Ray Ventrone, gave 54 Boston-area kids the opportunity to engage in a simulated Pats practice. The kids had their own space in the locker room, ran onto the field through the Pats' helmet and received drills from the Patriots. Bruschi ran among the five stations set up to provide instruction ..."
Bucs GM defends team expenditures
"Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik believes his team has spent its money wisely over the past five years. The Bucs have spent the least amount of money on player costs between 2004 and 2008 than any other NFL team according to a recent article on NFL.com. Despite the frugal spending, Dominik insists he has never been ordered by the Glazers, who spent over $1.5 billion to acquire Manchester United in 2005, not to spend money on free agents. "It's never been stated like that, nor have I been under that impression my last six or seven months on the job, or the years prior as Director of Pro [Personnel]," Dominik said. "It's been 'Lets spend our money smart.' "The philosophy I ..."
