New York Jets Trade Rumors

LT appears to be in NY state of mind
"The team that just two months ago ended one of the best Chargers' seasons ever now appears to have absconded with one of the best Chargers' players ever. According to three people with knowledge of the process, Tomlinson has decided to become a New York Jet. "It's 100 percent," one source said. "Done deal." Sources said Tomlinson is expected to announce the decision today or tomorrow. Still, Tomlinson said via e-mail this morning that he "doesn't know" where he's going yet. One source cautioned late Saturday night that a decision has not yet been officially made. But the others said today that Tomlinson has let people know he is going to New York."
LaDainian Tomlinson is leaning towards Jets, reports says
"LaDaindian Tomlinson is said to be leaning towards signing with the Jets, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Tomlinson, who spent his entire nine-year career with the Chargers, was released last month. He visited the Vikings and Jets last week, flying home Saturday morning following a two-day stay in New Jersey. Although he's tentatively scheduled to visit the Saints and Eagles this week, people close to him believe he'll sign with the Jets as early as Sunday or Monday."
Signs point to New York for LT
"I have not confirmed it beyond a shadow of a doubt, because there is some thought by those close to LaDainian Tomlinson that he is still considering his options. But the team that just two months ago ended one of the best Chargers' seasons ever now appears to have absconded with one of the best Chargers' players ever. According to three people with knowledge of the process, Tomlinson has decided to become a New York Jet."
New York's interest in former Charger could prompt a move with current backup RB
"I am curious about the Jets' interest in former Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson, because I just don't see what the plan is by swapping out one RB in his thirties in Thomas Jones - who was very productive as a Jet - for LT. It isn't surprising to see a veteran player on the downside of his career weigh his options by taking multiple visits to drive up his own market value in hopes of a semi-bidding war for second-tier free agent money. Some veteran players even wait until after the draft to make a final call to avoid seeing a rookie drafted at their exact position. But, even in saying that, LT as a Jet? From a scheme perspective, LT makes sense in Brian Schottenheimer's offense because the ..."
Report: Jets all-out to get Tomlinson to sign
"Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson is at the Jets training facility for a visit, and the team is doing all it can to get his name on a contract before he leaves New Jersey. "For that to ever turn into a signing, it's gonna have to be if everything lines up with him, us, economics, medical, role," GM Mike Tannenbaum said this morning on WFAN. "I think he would bring great leadership to our organization, but we'll see how it goes today." Fanhouse.com reports the Jets are willing to give Tomlinson the same two-year, $5 million deal the Chiefs gave Thomas Jones, who could not get that offer from the Jets. "(The Jets) may be willing to move upwards to $3.5 million a year for Tomlinson ..."
Tomlinson takes jersey and runs
"Having spent his entire nine-year NFL career with San Diego, LaDainian Tomlinson likely had forgotten what it was like to be courted by another team. That changed Wednesday when the running back began his free-agent visit with the Vikings. "It's like recruiting all over again, like going from high school to college," Tomlinson said. "You just kind of have to get a feel and see where you fit in at and see how it goes." After spending much of Thursday listening to the Vikings make their pitch at Winter Park, Tomlinson decided he wanted to hear what at least one other team had to say. Just after 5 p.m., Tomlinson, holding a purple Vikings jersey that might end up being nothing more than a ..."
Report: Sharper likes what Jets are doing
"Free agent safety Darren Sharper sure sounds like someone who wants to play for the Jets. "I have the utmost respect for Rex Ryan, seeing what he did last year and how quickly he turned things around with a rookie quarterback. And I sat down and watched that scheme and what they did," the Saints Super Bowl champion told the New Orleans Times Picayune. "And like I've told people before, the New York teams, there's something about the big lights and the big city that fits me, and I know I would fit there." The report says he is seeking more than the $1.7 million he made last season, when he was named to the Pro Bowl with nine interceptions and three TD returns, including one against Mark ..."
Report: LT on way to visit Jets
"LaDainian Tomlinson has left the Minnesota Vikings facility without a deal in place and is on his way to New York to visit the Jets. A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the star running back spent several hours at Vikings headquarters Thursday, but did not reach agreement on a contract. The person requested anonymity because negotiations were ongoing. Tomlinson emerged from the meetings shortly after 6 p.m. clutching a purple Vikings jersey. But the former Chargers star did not comment before pulling away in a black limousine. Vikings coach Brad Childress told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Tomlinson, "Had a good visit here. Promised the Jets he'd ..."
Report: Jets could have matched Jones' offer from Chiefs
"The Jets were given a chance to match the deal Thomas Jones signed with the Chiefs, according to ProFootballTalk.com. While analyzing what it would take to bring LaDainian Tomlinson to New York, the report says "Per a league source, the Jets had a chance to match the two-year, $5 million contract that the Chiefs paid to running back Thomas Jones, but opted not to do so.""
Report: LB Alston visits Jets
"Raiders free agent linebacker Jon Alston visited the Jets on Thursday, according to NJ.com. He was limited to nine games last season by a concussion, and likely would be a backup and special teams player, the report says."
Tomlinson to Visit Jets, Who Have an Opening
"When the Jets released Thomas Jones after he declined to take a pay cut, the prevailing analysis was that he might have slowed at the end of last season. But the Jets lost an experienced veteran who was a tremendous presence in the locker room. Might they be trying to lure someone like Jones to replace him? How about LaDainian Tomlinson, the former Charger and future Hall of Famer who rushed for more than a 1,000 yards a season from 2001 to 2008? Tomlinson, who was clearly diminished in 2009 (a career-low 730 yards, but 12 touchdowns), will visit the Jets on Friday. Tomlinson left the Vikings without a contract on Thursday evening after two days of meetings. Adding Tomlinson to the ..."
LaDainian Tomlinson to visit New York Jets
"LaDainian Tomlinson left Vikings headquarters Thursday without a contract and now will be wined and dined by Rex Ryan and the Jets, who are very serious about signing the future Hall of Fame running back, according to multiple league sources. The only thing that could have short-circuited the trip to New York was an 11th-hour deal with the Vikings to back up Adrian Peterson. Barring that, Tomlinson will meet with the Jets, who want to team the former NFL MVP with Shonn Greene. Tomlinson reportedly left Minnesota very impressed by the Vikings but wants to talk to other teams. He reportedly has visits with other teams lined up for next week and may visit the Eagles and Saints, who have ..."
Darren Sharper says the Saints haven't shown enough 'love' yet; thinks he'd be good fit with Jets
"I just checked in with New Orleans Saints free agent safety Darren Sharper, who said he expects to be ready to hit the road for some potential visits with other teams within a week or so, as soon as he's recovered enough from his recent minor knee surgery to move around on it and fly. Sharper hasn't ruled out a return to the Saints, but he did admit that if the Saints had shown him enough love with their early contract offers, he wouldn't be a free agent right now. "If the love was right, that would have been taken care of. The love would have been reciprocated," said Sharper, who settled for a one-year, $1.7 million contract in New Orleans last year but expects more years and dollars this ..."
LaDainian Tomlinson may visit NY Jets, report says
"Former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is likely headed for a visit with the Jets on Friday. If veteran running back LaDainian Tomlinson leaves Minnesota without a contract on Thursday, he's scheduled to visit the Jets on Friday, according to an report on ESPN. The Jets are searching for a veteran running back to replace the departed Thomas Jones and complement second-year pro Shonn Greene. Tomlinson, a nine-year veteran, has been on the decline in recent years, however. Last season, he rushed for 730 yards and 12 touchdowns on 223 carries (3.3-yard average). It was the first time in his career he didn't reach the 1,000-yard mark. I find the courting of Tomlinson a bit ..."
Jets the next visit for LT?
"LaDainian Tomlinson is in Minnesota for a visit, and the Vikings believe he could be a good fit. Tomlinson, too, thinks he could be a good fit for Minnesota. The running back is scheduled to meet with coach Brad Childress and other members of the organization on Thursday. The 2006 NFL MVP was released by the San Diego Chargers last month after the least-productive season of his prolific nine-year career. Tomlinson's travels are not scheduled to end in Minnesota. Following Thursday's trip in Minnesota, Tomlinson is now scheduled to visit the New York Jets on Friday, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Whether Tomlinson actually arrives in New York is another ..."
Jets GM open to Laveranues return
"It appears the interest between the Jets and wide receiver Laveranues Coles is mutual. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum yesterday sounded amenable to the possibility of re-signing Coles, who left the Jets last year to sign a big free-agent contract with the Bengals. Coles was released by the Bengals last Thursday and is free to sign with any team. Coles said last week that his first call would be to the Jets. Tannenbaum said he has texted Coles and spoken to Coles' agent. "Maybe at some point, but we'll see," Tannenbaum said of a possible Coles return. "I have all the respect in the world for Laveranues. He's as tough as they come.""
Just-released Laveranues Coles could sign with New York Jets for third time
"Anybody interested in a 3.0 version of Laveranues Coles? The Jets apparently are. With at least one opening in their thin receiving corps, the Jets haven't ruled out the possibility of re-signing Coles for a third stint with the team, the Daily News has learned. Coles, 32, was released last week after one season with the Bengals, and he told a New Jersey newspaper he's interested in a return to the Jets. He was cut by the Jets last February, a mutual parting in which he agreed to forfeit $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. The Jets tried to re-sign him for less money, but the Bengals offered a richer deal. Now the Jets are looking ..."
Report: Coles plans to call Jets
"Laveranues Coles, released by the Bengals yesterday, said he plans to contact the Jets to see if they want him to return. "They'll be the first team we call to see if they're interested," Coles said, according to NJ.com. The Jets wanted to re-sign Coles last offseason but the Bengals' lucrative offer of $10 million guaranteed was too good for him to pass up or the Jets to match. However, Coles had a disappointing season in Cincinnati and said he never meshed with quarterback Carson Palmer. "I didn't fit into the offense at all," Coles told writer Dave Hutchinson."
Report: Chiefs have interest in Jones
"NFL.com reports the Chiefs are interested in free agent running back Thomas Jones, who was officially released by the Jets today. Jason La Canfora writes the Jets "remain interested in bringing back their leading rusher for a lesser price tag.""
Rhodes staying with Jets; Jones looking elsewhere
"Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said today the team plans to pay Kerry Rhodes a $2 million roster bonus and the safety will be on the team this season. "We expect Kerry to be here and we expect him to be in the offseason program,'' Tannenbaum said. Tannenbaum, speaking on a conference call to discuss last night's trade for cormerback Antonio Cromartie, also addressed Thomas Jones' future."
Door not shut on Jones yet
"Is it possible that Thomas Jones isn't finished with the Jets after all? Though the Jets told Jones earlier this week they were going to release him today rather than pay him the $3 million roster bonus he was scheduled to earn, a report surfaced yesterday that said they were interested in re-signing Jones after he was released. Though the Jets would not comment about the possibility of Jones remaining with the team, a source familiar with the Jets' thinking told The Post that likelihood is remote, though the door was not completely closed. Should the Jets choose to bring Jones back, there is a precedent for this kind of maneuver."
If cut, Adalius Thomas may take a Jet ride
"If Jets linebacker Bart Scott is to be believed, Adalius Thomas not only thinks he's going to be released by the Patriots, but he also has his eyes set on joining Rex Ryan and Gang Green the minute that happens. Scott, who was a guest on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" morning show yesterday, said he spoke with the Pats linebacker about reuniting on the Jets when they were taking in Super Bowl festivities last month in Miami. "It's funny," Scott said. "I was hanging with Adalius Thomas for Super Bowl weekend. We're buddies from back in the day. He made it public that he's expressed an interest in joining Rex. I think some of his better years of his career have been a part of the Ravens defense and ..."
Rhodes future with Jets 'up in the air
"S Kerry Rhodes recently tweeted that he had a "productive" lunch with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. That's not the way I'm hearing it. Methinks Rhodes' future still is a bit up in the air. He's due a $2 million roster bonus on March 12, and I'm still not convinced he's going to see that money. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Jets look to trade him. Late in the season, Rhodes admitted he didn't see eye-to-eye with Pettine. The coaching staff wasn't satisfied with his commitment to football, and that contributed to his benching. To his credit, Rhodes made a concerted effort late in the season to win back the trust of his coaches, and his performance improved."
Jets are playing with TJ dynamite
"Keep an eye out for this transaction on Friday: Jets release running back Thomas Jones. Don't be fooled by the small print. This could become a big deal. The Jets officially announcing yesterday that they'll part ways with Jones, leaving him with the requisite canned empty verbal bouquets from general manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan, is a dangerous roll of the dice that has potential to haunt them this year. There was no need to make this move for a number of reasons."
Jets to release running back Thomas Jones as early as today
"What seemed like a foregone conclusion this weekend could become official as early as today with the Jets releasing veteran running back Thomas Jones. The move will end Jones' three-year run with the team. He will be given his walking papers despite rushing for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, both career-highs. The two sides decided to part ways when Jones, who turns 32 in August, refused to renegotiate his contract, a deal that called for him to receive a $3 million roster bonus on March 9 and a $2.8 million base salary in 2010. The club and general manager Mike Tannenbaum both declined comment this morning. Jones, who turns 32 in August, will be sorely missed by his teammates. ..."
Jets set to release running back Thomas Jones
"Running back Thomas Jones will not rework his contract, according to a source close to the situation, and thus likely will be released by the Jets this week. The Jets wanted the veteran, who is scheduled to make $2.8 million in base salary in 2010, to take a pay cut. Jones, 31, rushed for a career-high 1,402 yards last season, but wasn't productive during the playoffs because of a nagging knee injury. Jones, who was due a $3 million roster bonus, is considered expendable by the Jets because of the emergence of then-rookie Shonn Greene during the postseason."
Rex Ryan mum on Adalius Thomas
"We've already projected this dubious scenario. The minute Adalius Thomas is released by the Patriots on Friday, he'll go running into the open, welcoming arms of rival Rex Ryan and the New York Jets. This isn't rocket science, of course. It's merely logical to presume if the Pats do part company with the linebacker, or aren't able to trade him, he'll want to reunite with a coach who helped send him to two Pro Bowls while in Baltimore. That's a more likely scenario than staying with the coach who sent him home for being a few minutes late to a team meeting during a snow storm last fall. Thomas is probably going green as we speak in anticipation of his release. As for Ryan, he'd probably ..."
NFL beat writers say New Meadowlands will get 2014 Super Bowl
"New York still has two more months to complete its 2014 Super Bowl bid. But the New York push to host the biggest game in sports gained momentum on Friday when the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee withdrew its bid. New York, Tampa and Miami are the remaining candidates, with bids due May 1 and owners voting on the host city on May 24-26. "I've been confident from the beginning, and there remains a lot of work to be done to earn this exciting opportunity," Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson said Saturday. "However, I know we are up to the challenge of hosting the biggest game on the biggest stage in the world." With the backing of commissioner Roger Goodell, the Giants and Jets are hoping ..."
Jets running back Thomas Jones expected to be released this week
"Jets running back Thomas Jones has refused to rework his contract and is expected to be released this week, according to a team official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak publicly. Jones, who is due to earn a $3 million roster bonus on March 9 and a $2.8 million base salary in 2010, turns 32 in August. The Jets didn't want to commit that kind of money to an aging running back and wanted Jones to rework his contract. Last season, Jones rushed for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns, both career highs. However, he faded down the stretch, rushing for just 117 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries in the postseason (2.6-yard average), raising a red flag."
NY Jets' Braylon Edwards wants long-term deal
"Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards wants set-for-life money in the form of a long-term deal, but he'll have to earn it if general manager Mike Tannenbaum has any say. Tannenbaum, speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis Friday, said emphatically that Edwards must dedicate himself to the team's offseason program and become more consistent in 2010. Edwards, who had six regular-season drops last season according to STATs Inc., caught 35 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games with the Jets. The 6-3, 215-pounder is a restricted free agent and the club is expected to give him a one-year tender offer of slightly more than $5 million. ''With Braylon this is going to be a really ..."
Jets GM hints at divorce with vet RB Thomas Jones
"Thomas Jones' productive marriage with the Jets appears headed for divorce. Speaking yesterday at the scouting combine, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum made it sound as if Jones soon will join LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook on the list of prominent veteran running backs forced to the unemployment line this month. "We are getting closer to a decision there, but nothing has been finalized yet," Tannenbaum said. "All I can say is we were fortunate we traded for him three years ago." Releasing the 31-year-old Jones before the start of free agency on Friday would likely based more on money than his production. Jones ran for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, but is due $5.8 million in ..."
Jets about to part with Jones
"Thomas Jones' productive marriage with the Jets appears headed for divorce. Speaking to reporters here today at the scouting combine, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum made it sound as if Jones would soon join LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook on the list of prominent veteran running backs forced to the unemployment line this month. We are getting closer to a decision there, but nothing has been finalized yet," Tannenbaum said. "All I can say is we were fortunate we traded for him three years ago." Releasing the 31-year-old Jones before the start of free agency next Friday would likely be a matter of money much more than production. Jones ran for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns last season but ..."
Biggs: Bears unlikely to bring back Jones
"For the third consecutive season, the Bears will try to replace Thomas Jones. They did a pretty good job in 2008 when Matt Forte had one of the finest rookie season for a running back in franchise history. But Forte and the running game struggled a year ago and now the team has to re-evaluate what it is doing, especially in light of the addition of offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The club is likely to seek a complementary back for this season and what better back to replace Jones than, well, Jones? As Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports, Jones could be forced to take a pay cut - or else - by the New York Jets, the team general manager Jerry Angelo gave Jones to in 2008 for ..."
Jets might release running back Thomas Jones if he doesn't take paycut
"Although veteran running back Thomas Jones rushed for 1,402 and 14 touchdowns last season, both career-highs, he could be the next high-profile runner behind LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook to be given his walking papers this offseason. Jones, who turns 32 in August, is due to earn a $3 million roster bonus next month plus a $2.8 million base salary in 2010. The Jets want him to renegotiate his contract or they'll likely release him. The club and Jones' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have had discussions and the two sides are expected to talk this week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The Jets, who led the NFL in rushing (172.3 yards per game), feel Jones is expendable because of their ..."
Jets, Jones' agent are set to meet
"Despite one of the best years of his career last season, it's no secret that a different number -- the $5.8 million due him in roster bonuses and salary -- would determine Thomas Jones' future with the Jets. Along those lines, GM Mike Tannenbaum is expected to meet with the 32-year-old running back's agent here during the scouting combine this week, most likely to discuss Jones' willingness to accept a substantial pay cut to remain with the team. If Jones doesn't agree to a reduction, it appears likely the Jets will make him join LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook on the list of heralded backs to be released in the days leading up to the March 5 start of free agency."
Jets sign kicker Nick Folk, could spell end for Jay Feely
"Far apart in contract talks with incumbent kicker Jay Feely, who will be an unrestricted free agent March 5, the Jets signed former Cowboy Nick Folk to a one-year contract. Feely still wants to return to the Jets, according to his agent, Glenn Schwartzman. But Schwartzman also said it "made no sense to accept what they offered … We were left with no choice but to test the (free-agent) waters." It's unclear if the Jets remain interested in Feely, but it's hard to imagine them not keeping an open mind. Folk was a train wreck last season, missing a field goal in each of his last six games before being cut two weeks before the playoffs. It was a mysterious meltdown, as Folk was a Pro Bowl ..."
Source: Jets sign Folk for 1 year
"With Jay Feely scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, and with the price of some kickers going up, the Jets signed former Dallas Cowboys kicker Nick Folk to a one-year deal, a league source said Tuesday. Folk had workouts with the Jets and Giants, but opted for the Jets deal."
Jets to tryout ex-Cowboys kicker Nick Folk
"The Jets will bring in former Cowboys kicker Nick Folk for a tryout this week, according to Pro Footballtalk.com. Folk, a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2007, developed a glitch in his kicking mechanics last season and converted only 18 of 28 field goal attempts before being waived by Dallas. The Cowboys jettisoned him after he missed a critical 24-yarder in a victory to the Saints."
Jets to tender Brad, Eric Smith
"As expected, the Jets will extend tender offers to wide receiver Brad Smith and safety Eric Smith, according to general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Both players had career years last season and form the core of the Jets special teams. Each is in their fourth season and are restricted free agents as a result of there being no new collective bargaining agreement. The pair join wide receiver Braylon Edwards, running back Leon Washington and quarterback Kellen Clemens as restricted free agents the club plans to tender. Brad Smith, a fourth-round pick out of Missouri in 2006, burst on the scene in 2009 after three so-so seasons."
FOX reporter: Giants would be 'crazy' to swap Umenyiora for Rhodes
"FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer said the possibility of a Kerry Rhodes-Osi Umenyiora trade is unthinkable from a Giants perspective. "I haven't heard anything about that," Glazer said on WFAN this morning. "But if I'm the Jets I'd take that, you kidding me? That's not going to happen, what are you crazy?" The Jets' Rhodes and Giants' Umenyiora were both relegated to limited roles during parts of the season. Rhodes was temporarily banished to the bench for not playing the tough style that head coach Rex Ryan had become accustomed to when he was with the Ravens. Umenyiora started the year at odds with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and ended it as a third-down blitz specialist after ..."
FOX Sports reporter says fan spit on Jets coach
"The fan who got the finger from Rex Ryan spit on the Jets head coach and confronted him three times before Ryan reacted, according to someone who was with Ryan in Florida. FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer gave a blow-by-blow account of the confrontation this morning on WFAN's "Boomer & Carton Show." "We all showed great restraint. (Rex) showed the greatest restraint ...," Glazer said. "This wasn't heckled. This was a guy who was going out of his way to incite a fight, to incite some sort of violence to get the head coach of the Jets to ruin his job and to really put Rex in a place he didn't need to be." Ryan, who has apologized for the incident that occured at an MMA event in Sunrise, was ..."
Agent: Jets looking at CFL sacks leader
"The Jets are looking at CFL sacks leader Ricky Foley to possibly boost their pass rush. Foley's agents said on their Twitter page that the defensive end will visit with the Jets, Rams and Patriots this week. Foley (6-2, 245) has played for the British Columbia Lions the past four Canadian seasons, with last year his best, making 51 tackles with 12 sacks."
Timetable for Sanchez's return to Jets after knee surgery is up in air
"The Jets announced Tuesday that Mark Sanchez has decided to have surgery on his left knee, as first reported by the Daily News, but there seems to be gray area on the length of the recovery period. Curiously, the Jets would not give a specific timetable, saying only that Sanchez will be ready before the start of training camp in late July. When it was revealed last week that Sanchez was mulling surgery, the feeling close to the team was that it would be a two-month recovery. The rehab time is important because it will have an impact on Sanchez's offseason training. The Jets' program begins in late March and continues through June. Sanchez will have the surgery, believed to be an ..."
Oakland Raiders should trade Nnamdi Asomugha
"I LOVE New York ... as the next home of Nnamdi Asomugha, the Raiders' Pro Bowl cornerback who apparently has his eye on joining the Jets. Get rid of Nnamdi? The sanest voice in the NFL's looniest locker room? The Raiders' best player, at least among those who don't kick a football for a living? Yes, yes and yes. Do the deal, as long as Al Davis nabs a franchise-saving package of draft picks and players in return. Asomugha's value is sky high. The Raiders, since Asomugha's rookie year of 2003, have been 6 feet under. Even at his peak, he hasn't stopped their tailspin and five-win seasons. He is a magnificent bargaining chip who could generate a blockbuster trade, along the standard set by ..."
Kris Jenkins: Brett Favre's 'superstar status' caused 'animosity' in New York
"Vikings QB Brett Favre pulled out of tonight's Pro Bowl after the vicious beating he took from the Saints in last weekend's NFC Championship Game. But even Favre's image took a bit of a shot in Friday night's NFL Total Access on NFL Network (watch the video) when former Jets teammate Kris Jenkins said Favre's presence caused a rift in the New York locker room in 2008, though it's possible the issues could have been more rooted in jealousy among Favre's teammates that season. When asked if the locker room chemistry was ok when Brett was a Jet, Jenkins replied, "No, no it was not." And though he didn't call out Favre or any of his teammates in particular, Jenkins cited some negative comments ..."
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum's plans to retool team could be hindered without new collective bargaining agreement
"As general manager Mike Tannenbaum prepares for the offseason, he could be facing a different set of rules without a new collective bargaining agreement and it could hinder him in retooling the team. The final eight playoff teams can't sign an unrestricted free agent unless they lose one themselves, and the money has to match, much like in NBA trades. That player must have an expired contract and be in the league six or more years. Also, more than 200 players that would've been unrestricted free agents, such as Jets WR Braylon Edwards and RB Leon Washington, will be restricted free agents under the current CBA. However, if a veteran player gets cut by a team, he can be signed by any team ..."
Rhodes looks clear for return to Jets
"When coach Rex Ryan was cryptic when asked about the status of Kerry Rhodes at the beginning of the week, it sparked speculation the safety would not return to the Jets next season. However, during a state-of-the-union address following the magical run that ended in the AFC Championship game last week, general manager Mike Tannenbaum yesterday said fans can expect to see Rhodes (who is due a $2 million roster bonus in March) wearing green again. "We expect him to be back unless something changes," Tannenbaum said. "He will be back." Tannenbaum also addressed the team's plans for several other players whose status is in question, including running backs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, ..."
Jets safety Kerry Rhodes says he wants to be a Jet
"news, stats, photos and more Breaking News, Must-See Sports Stories, Print edition stories, Reporters' blog » NY Jets safety Kerry Rhodes says he wants to be a Jet By Dave Hutchinson/The Star Ledger January 27, 2010, 5:33PM Kerry Rhodes smiling Jets fileWilliam Perlman/The Star-LedgerThere is concern that Kerry Rhodes, who likes to bring attention to himself and is called "Hollywood,'' may not fit in with the Jets. Jets safety Kerry Rhodes said Wednesday that he wants to be a Jet and he and coach Rex Ryan will talk once again in the coming weeks about his future. It was the first time since his benching in Week 12 that Rhodes said he wanted to return next season. But Rhodes also left open ..."
Bumpy Rhodes: Kerry says Jets future in doubt
"Two days after coach Rex Ryan raised significant questions about whether Kerry Rhodes was wanted back by the Jets next season, Rhodes addressed the situation for the first time yesterday, though he left the issue rather cloudy. Appearing on SNY's "Wheelhouse" show, Rhodes said not only that Ryan wants him to remain a Jet but that he wants to stay. Nevertheless, Rhodes dropped several hints that it's no lock he will be back with the Jets. It's believed that Rhodes doesn't believe he will be back with the Jets. One moment he was saying he enjoys being a Jet. "Rex Ryan is my guy. I like Rex a lot," Rhodes said. "We get along. We're great friends. He called me [yesterday] and reiterated again ..."
Vernon Gholston's furture with jets breeds uncertainty
"LB Vernon Gholston's future with the team is uncertain even though the team still owes him nearly $11 million in guaranteed money. Gholston has no sacks in 29 career games."
