Jaguars fan poll: Don't take Tim Tebow

"
The conventional wisdom that Jaguars fans want the team to draft former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow might not be accurate. During the team's first telephone Fan Forum with general manager Gene Smith on Tuesday night, an event limited to season-ticket holders, fans were asked if the team should draft Tebow. Of the 800 fans who voted by phone, the answer was no by a 55 percent to 45 percent margin. Vic Ketchman, the senior editor of jaguars.com who gave the fans' questions to Smith, said he was "stunned" by the result. In the past, Ketchman has suggested that Tebow would have a better future in the NFL as a tight end than as a quarterback. The Fan Forum was designed to promote the selling ...

Special-teams standout Kassim Osgood to visit Jaguars

Jacksonville Times-Union
"
The Jaguars executed their plan to keep quiet Friday during the first phase of the free-agency rush. Still, the team managed to schedule a visit for San Diego special-teams standout Kassim Osgood, an unrestricted free agent. Osgood was expected to fly into Jacksonville on Friday night and meet with the team today. The Jaguars have also been in contact with former Detroit Lions defensive end Jared DeVries, according to a league source. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio didn't respond to text messages, and general manager Gene Smith didn't return an e-mail seeking comment. Osgood, 29, made his third Pro Bowl last year as a special-teamer, nudging out Jaguars special-teams ace Montell Owens for the ...

Jaguars likely to start free agent period quietly
Comment

"
The Jaguars aren't likely to make much of a splash as the NFL's free agent period starts today. "Teams have gotten better at protecting the valuable free agents," coach Jack Del Rio said. "The ones you really want are getting signed by their teams, and [fewer] and [fewer] attractive players are making it to the market. That's just the reality of it, especially with the collective bargaining agreement being where it is right now." The Jaguars were busy negotiating with their own players on Thursday. They signed defensive tackle Atiyyah Ellison to a tender and re-signed offensive lineman Kynan Forney. But the team failed to strike deals with three other players — defensive ends Reggie ...

The Jaguars signed receiver Troy Williamson to a one-year contract Tuesday. As reported by The Times-Union on Feb. 20, the deal includes a $100,000 signing bonus, in addition to a workout bonus, and Williamson's total compensation amounts to slightly more than half ($800,000) of his salary from 2009. He was set to become a restricted free agent.

The Jaguars signed defensive tackle Montavious Stanley on Monday to a one-year contract worth approximately $640,000. Scheduled to become a restricted free agent later this week, Stanley received a new contract instead of the low-round tender of $1.22 million. The club has sent out offers to all of its restricted free agents, which also include Atiyyah Ellison and Greg Peterson. Linebacker Clint Ingram has been offered the low-round tender, but the team hasn't announced whether he's signed it. A fourth-year veteran, Stanley played in a career-high 15 games last season, finishing with 24 tackles, a sack, three pass knockdowns and one tackle for loss.

Will Jaguars be big spenders in free agency?
Comment

Two years ago, the Jaguars made a lot of noise in free agency, signing high-priced veterans Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence. Both were released the following year, leaving the club $23 million lighter with nothing to show for it. The Jaguars are not interested in repeating those mistakes. They demonstrated as much last offseason with a frugal set of unrestricted free-agent acquisitions: veterans Sean Considine and Tra Thomas. Considine, a safety, played in 11 games last season and started six. Thomas, an offensive tackle, started only three games and was released earlier this month. "Our philosophy is to build our roster primarily through the college draft and use pro free agency to ...

Jaguars at the NFL Combine: Pass rusher wanted

Jacksonville Times-Union
"
With a league-low 14 sacks last season, the Jaguars' pass rush needs to dramatically improve for the club to become a playoff contender in 2010 and beyond. "One area that is obvious to everyone who follows the Jaguars is being able to disrupt the rhythm and timing of opposing offenses, whether it's creating more sacks or getting more turnovers," general manager Gene Smith said this week. "It doesn't have to be a sack or interception to get off the field on third down. It can be forcing an errant throw for an incompletion or even forcing a throw to a check-down receiver, and you make a tackle short of the stakes." The Jaguars set out today to do some window shopping for that ever-elusive ...

Jaguars bringing back TE Ernest Wilford
Comment
February 23
Jacksonville Times-Union
"
Tight end Ernest Wilford opted not to test the market in free agency, and instead signed a one-year contract Monday worth the veteran minimum $630,000. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Jaguars in 2004 as a receiver, Wilford was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 5. But it's unlikely that Wilford would have been able to command much more than the veteran minimum on the open market. It was believed there was an outside chance that Wilford wouldn't fit into the Jaguars' plans because of the rise of second-year player Zach Miller, in addition to the continued development of former first-round pick Marcedes Lewis. But with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter taking more ...

Torry Holt is available if Bears general manager Jerry Angelo is interested in reuniting the veteran receiver with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz in Chicago. The Jaguars released Holt, tackle Tra Thomas and defensive lineman Rob Meier on Thursday. Angelo might be looking for an extra receiver to accommodate Martz's multiple-receiver formations and the coach and receiver enjoyed much success together in St. Louis. Holt, 33, may not be the player he was at the height of "The Greatest Show on Turf," but he caught 51 passes for 722 yards for the Jaguars last season, and he knows Martz's system. Bears unlikely to pursue Torry Holt

As Mike Martz continues to familiarize himself with the Bears' offensive personnel, one player with whom he needs no introduction became available Thursday when the Jaguars released wide receiver Torry Holt. Holt's name came up last offseason when he left the Rams and the Bears were discussing ways to improve at the position, a discussion that touched all the bases, including Plaxico Burress. The Bears passed on Holt then, and unless Martz makes an impassioned case for the former star in the Greatest Show on Turf, it's expected they will pass again. The Bears decided to go with what they had at wide receiver in 2009 and it turned out to be the position that showed the most promise on ...

Jaguars release Torry Holt; good fit for Bears?

Let the Torry-Holt-to-the-Bears talk resume again: As expected, the Jacksonville Jaguars released the veteran wide receiver Thursday. It was a popular topic last year after Holt left the St. Louis Rams, where he spent the first 10 years of his career, and it's sure to gain even more momentum with Mike Martz in place as the Bears' new offensive coordinator. Holt became a star in "The Greatest Show on Turf" under Martz and his career numbers look worthy of the Hall of Fame: 920 receptions, 13,382 yards, 74 touchdowns. The Jaguars stood pat regarding roster moves Monday despite it being the first day of the new league year, which meant that teams could officially begin releasing players. But that doesn't mean roster trimming isn't on the horizon. The Times-Union reported last week that the organization recently informed receiver Torry Holt and offensive tackle Tra Thomas of its plans to waive the veteran free agents, who were signed last year. The team didn't make the moves official on Monday, but it's expected the Jags will sever ties with the duo sometime this week. Out of respect for Holt and Thomas, the organization gave them advance notice of its plans to allow additional time for both players to ...

Jaguars hire Joe Cullen to coach defensive line, fire Ted Monachino

The Jaguars' coaching shuffle continued Tuesday. Defensive line coach Ted Monachino became the 19th assistant to be fired by coach Jack Del Rio during his seven-year tenure, and Monachino was replaced by veteran coach Joe Cullen. Following the recent resignations of tight ends coach Mike Tice and running backs coach Kennedy Pola, who've yet to be replaced, Del Rio will have at least three new coaches on his staff this year. Cullen coached at Idaho State last year after being with the Detroit Lions the three previous seasons. He was arrested twice in a week in 2006 and suspended for a game by the Lions and the league and fined $20,000. The first arrest was on a charge of indecent and ...

Veteran defensive line coach Joe Cullen interviewed for a position with the Jaguars on Thursday, but the team said there would be no announcement on whether he will be hired. The Jaguars also didn't announce what the future of current defensive line coach Ted Monachino would be if Cullen is hired. The only opening the Jaguars have on their staff is for a tight ends coach after Mike Tice departed for Chicago. If Cullen is hired, it will mark his return to the NFL after his contract with the Detroit Lions wasn't renewed in the wake of the team's 0-16 season in 2008. He spent last year at Idaho State and interviewed earlier this week at Mississippi State. Cullen's three-year tenure with the ...

In the wake of the departure of Jaguars assistant head coach Mike Tice, the team appears to be on the verge of filling his spot on the staff with a defensive assistant. Former Detroit Lions defensive line coach Joe Cullen flew into Jacksonville on Wednesday to interview for a position with the Jaguars. According to a team source, Cullen is expected to be hired, possibly as early as Thursday. But it's unclear what responsibilities Cullen will hold, because current Jaguars defensive line coach Ted Monachino remains on the staff. The expected hiring will come with widespread scrutiny. Cullen was arrested twice in seven days in 2006, which resulted in a $20,000 fine and suspension by the Lions ...

Tice in Chicago to interview with Bears, Del Rio says

Jacksonville assistant head coach Mike Tice appears to be in the mix for an offensive coordinator's job elsewhere, according to Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, who said Tice was in Chicago on Wednesday to interview for a position with the Bears. Currently in charge of Jacksonville's tight ends, Tice joined the Jaguars in 2006 after spending 2001-05 as Minnesota's head coach. Chicago is reportedly in the process of trying to fill multiple openings on the offensive staff, which means Tice could be in line for a position as the coordinator, tight ends coach or offensive line coach.

The coaching future of Jack Del Rio, the subject of much national speculation in the wake of Pete Carroll's departure from Southern California, should become clearer Tuesday when he is expected to meet with Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver. The meeting might determine whether the owner wants Del Rio to return for an eighth season as the Jaguars coach. Del Rio, who played at Southern Cal, is also seen as a candidate to replace Carroll, who left USC to become the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Neither Weaver nor Del Rio has spoken publicly since Jan. 4, the day after the regular season ended, when they both said they expected to be in the playoffs next year. The Jack Del Rio watch is now at Defcon 3. As long as owner Wayne Weaver chooses to not definitively say that his current head coach will be on the Jaguars' sideline in 2010 — an issue begging to be resolved today — the speculation about Del Rio's future in Jacksonville might as well be a red light that nobody acknowledges. When a coach's job security is left up in the air, and the person in charge who can put it to rest decides to let things simmer, then you get media chasing a story waiting for a finish line. And now that a coaching vacancy has popped up at Del Rio's alma mater, Southern Cal, the coach who wasn't talked about a month ago as being in any kind of jeopardy appears in need ...

As the Seattle Seahawks worked through final details to bring Pete Carroll back to the NFL, Southern Cal has targeted a coach it wants to replace him. The Los Angeles Daily News reported late Sunday that Carroll had tendered his resignation from Southern Cal. It appears their first choice to replace him is not Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, the 1985 Rose Bowl MVP with the Trojans. Oregon State's Mike Riley was among athletic director Mike Garrett's top choices in 2000 before he hired Carroll. After losing 17,000 season ticket holders last year, the Jaguars hope they're down to their hard-core fans who will stick with them in the good times and bad. And particularly in the "average'' times. That's the way owner Wayne Weaver described the past seven years under coach Jack Del Rio, whose status will likely be determined during a meeting with Weaver this week. Even if your girlfriend says she's not interested, you have to be a little worried. Los Angeles has it all. Population, TV market, more than 200,000 millionaires and now this. Wayne Weaver might as well be in handcuffs. The Jaguars owner wants to be in the playoffs, hopes to eventually win a Super Bowl, but knows that it's unrealistic unless his average quarterback and average head coach find a way to elevate what Weaver described as an "average" football team. Let's not mince adjectives or allow anger from this season's 0-4 finish to alter reality. Del Rio called David Garrard a "middle-tier" NFL quarterback this week, which aptly describes himself as a head coach. When you look at the resume of Garrard (31-31 as a starter), Del Rio (58-57 record) and the Jaguars overall, they're right in the NFL middle. Not great (except sometimes against the Pittsburgh ...

Already expecting a thin crowd Sunday, Jacksonville might need to trim its anticipated attendance by three more. The Jaguars are likely to be without three key starters. Defensive tackle John Henderson (shoulder), wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) and cornerback Rashean Mathis (groin) were each listed as doubtful on the team's final injury report released after Friday's practice. By NFL standards, that means they have only a 25 percent chance of playing in a critical game for the AFC's wild-card picture. On offense, Sims-Walker leads the team in catches (52) and yards (752). All three are listed as doubtful on the club's latest injury report. "We're gonna do the best we can do with the players we have available," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. Mathis will likely be sidelined with a groin injury, while a shoulder ailment and a strained calf are likely to keep Henderson and Sims-Walker out of action. The club lists Considine as questionable on the injury report, but the veteran is not likely to play this week against the Texans, according to Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio. Gerald Alexander will take Considine's place in the starting lineup. "They've both been banged up," Del Rio said. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Monday that Mathis suffered a injury to his left index finger that might require surgery during Sunday's 23-20 overtime victory over the St. Louis Rams. Mathis finished the game. "There's potential there for an issue with his finger,'' Del Rio said. "We'll know more as we get into this.'' When Del Rio was asked if Mathis could play with a wrap on it, the coach said, "That's yet to be determined. It won't be a season-ending [injury]. What needs to be done if something needs to be done, what ends up being done, there'll be time for all that ...

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has no interest in trading Josh Cribbs
Comment

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday he has "no interest in moving Josh Cribbs." In response, Cribbs' agent J.R. Rickert said, "It is unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back. They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate.'' Rickert made it clear that he and Cribbs want the extension -- or a chance to go somewhere else. A source told the Plain Dealer on Thursday that Cribbs would welcome a trade if they won't re-do the deal, which runs through 2012. At least five teams have expressed interest in trading for Cribbs, including Miami, Oakland, Jacksonville and San Francisco, according ...

Browns' Josh Cribbs reportedly would like trade if new deal can't be reached
Comment

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Browns receiver Josh Cribbs wants to remain a Brown for the rest of his career, but if the team is unwilling to extend his contract, he'd welcome trade, a source close to the situation said. Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012. He has made it clear since the off-season that he wants a new deal in the form of a contract extension. In fact, he considered holding out at the beginning of the season. The Browns are believed to be unwilling to trade Cribbs before Tuesday's deadline, a source said. They prefer to hang onto him and perhaps work out a deal in the future. Cribbs is the prototypical player for coach Eric Mangini, one who ...

With almost a half-dozen teams expressing interest in Matt Jones in recent weeks, the former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver will work out Tuesday morning with the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to league sources. Jones, who caught 65 passes in 12 games in 2008, has been considered by teams that are looking for a big target at receiver, capable of picking up first downs and creating matchup problems in the red zone. Jones is 6-6, 228 pounds and was a first-round pick by the Jaguars before encountering off-field problems that led to his release in mid-March. Jones had been jailed just days before for violating the terms of his plea agreement that stemmed from a drug charge in 2008. ...

Jaguars vs. Titans game will be blacked out

The Jaguars make it official Thursday that they will not ask for an extension and their game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday will be blacked out on local TV. The Jaguars said they expect to sell slightly more than the 46,250 tickets they sold for the home opener against Arizona, but they're still thousands short of a sellout. If all the non-premium tickets aren't sold 72 hours before kickoff, the games are blacked out. Teams can ask for an extension if they have a reasonable chance of selling the rest of the tickets. Owner Wayne Weaver said at the start of the season that the Jaguars would be blacking out all of their home games this year because of low ticket sales.

The Jaguars officially placed receiver Troy Williamson on the injured-reserve list Wednesday, in addition to activating rookie receiver Tiquan Underwood from the practice squad. The team also announced the return of receiver Nate Hughes, who was added to the Jaguars practice squad a day after the club cut him for a two-drop performance in a 31-17 loss to Arizona. "I'm just glad to be back," Hughes said. Williamson goes on the IR after suffering a torn right labrum in the second quarter of Jacksonville's loss to Arizona. He finished the season with three catches for 34 yards and will be replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Sims-Walker. Williamson's absence also means the Jaguars will ...

Buccaneers trade quarterback Luke McCown to the Jacksonville Jaguars and cut kicker Matt Bryant and several others

Luke McCown's two touchdown passes at Jacksonville three weeks ago didn't help him earn the Bucs' starting quarterback job. But he did win over the Jaguars, who traded an undisclosed 2010 draft pick to the Bucs on Saturday night in exchange for the 28-year-old quarterback. Terms of the deal, contingent on McCown passing a physical, were not released. But the Bucs are expected to receive a conditional sixth-round pick that becomes a fifth-rounder based on McCown's playing time. He will be the Jaguars' No. 2 quarterback behind starter David Garrard. Meanwhile, kicker Matt Bryant was among 21 players cut by the Bucs, enabling them to trim the roster to one below the 53-player limit. The ...

The Tennessee Titans will work out former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones on Thursday, sources familiar with the situation confirmed. The 26-year-old Jones was scheduled to arrive in Nashville Wednesday evening, according to a source. Jones led the Jaguars with 65 receptions last year for 761 yards and two touchdowns, but was also suspended over an incident in which he was charged with felony possession of cocaine that was found in his vehicle before the 2008 offseason. The former first-rounder from the University of Arkansas in 2005 returned and started for the Jags last year, but was released this off-season after a second incident in which he violated terms of his ...

Jaguars looking to trade WR Dennis Northcutt
Comment

Jacksonville Times-Union
"
Another high-priced Jaguars acquisition appears to be headed out of town. Multiple league sources confirmed Wednesday that Jacksonville seeks to trade Dennis Northcutt, one of the longest-tenured receivers remaining on the roster. Northcutt's age (31) and salary (scheduled to make $2.75 million), combined with the addition of veteran Torry Holt and rookies Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood, appear to have made the 10-year veteran expendable. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio didn't immediately return calls seeking comment, and general manager Gene Smith didn't respond to an e-mail. Northcutt's agent, Jerome Stanley, was unavailable for comment, but he confirmed the club's ...

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to trade veteran receiver Dennis Northcutt, the most productive receiver they have left from last year's team, Northcutt's agent confirmed. "They have indicated that they intend to trade him and are trying to do so," agent Jerome Stanley said in an email exchange with ESPN.com. Northcutt joined the Jaguars as a free agent in 2007 and in 29 games caught 88 passes for 1,146 yards and six touchdowns. He also did some work as a return man. He came into the league as a second round pick by Cleveland out of Arizona in 2000. The Jaguars have already parted ways with two receivers who they once valued as first-round draft picks. They were uninterested in ...

Agent: Jones fined for violating program

Former first-round pick Matt Jones, a free agent receiver who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, has been notified he will not be suspended as the result of his violation of a court-mandated drug program, his agent said. Jones was informed by the NFL last week that he will be fined $50,000 but not suspended. Even then, the NFL Players Association has convinced Jones to appeal the fine, according to Dave Butz, his agent. Jones was suspended for the final three games of the 2008 season after he lost a league appeal stemming from his arrest for cocaine possession last July. In that case, Jones entered an Arkansas drug diversion program but was sent to jail for five days in ...

Is IR system in line for a change?
Comment

When the NFL adopted its system for placing players on season-ending injured reserve, the main issue was stashing. Teams had long been allowed to place players on injured reserve and bring them back later in the season. But some felt that clubs were circumventing the rule by placing players who weren't truly injured on IR, opening a roster spot for someone else. Thus, a competitive advantage was scored. Colts president Bill Polian remembers high-profile coaches and personnel executives, such as Don Shula and Jim Finks, pushing for a change to combat stashing, and it finally came in 1993, when the league made two significant adjustments. At that time, players placed on injured reserve would ...
