New York Giants Trade Rumors

Giants sign quarterback Jim Sorgi
"Jim Sorgi's agent didn't expect a deal on Monday but was hopeful it would come soon. It did. On Tuesday, Sorgi got his contract. The Giants signed Sorgi to a one-year deal after their doctors conversed with some other physicians who have examined Sorgi's shoulder. Obviously, they got the answers they were looking for and the ones Sorgi's agent said he was hoping to provide. "The team doctor talked to (noted orthopedic surgeon) Dr. (James) Andrews. He has a history with Jim," Sorgi's agent, Matt Brei, said by phone. "It was a matter of everybody getting comfortable, so we got the doctors in contact and everything was cleared. That's where a little bit of the holdup was." After six seasons ..."
Sorgi to visit Giants
"This one wasn't too difficult to figure. The Giants need a new backup quarterback and the Colts last week released Jim Sorgi, who backed up Peyton Manning the past six years. Peyton rings younger brother Eli and gives his endorsement and just like that Sorgi today will visit and work out with the Giants."
Giants free agent quarterback David Carr to visit San Francisco 49ers, source says
"The rumor leading up to free agency was that Giants free agent quarterback David Carr would draw interest from the Cardinals. Well, Arizona is certainly in play, but Carr will be headed elsewhere for his first visit. The former No. 1 overall pick, a Bakersfield, Calif. native, will fly to San Francisco to meet with the 49ers this weekend, according to someone informed of his travel plans. The person requested anonymity because neither Carr's camp nor the 49ers wanted the visit public. If he winds up with San Fran, Carr would be in direct competition with another top overall pick who's also had a disappointing start to his career: Alex Smith, who recently received a vote of confidence from ..."
Giants start free-agent period quickly, pursue ex-Cardinal Antrel Rolle
"The Giants got a jump on the free-agent market Thursday night and appeared poised to open their vault for Pro Bowl safety Antrel Rolle. Rolle, 27, is reportedly scheduled to visit the Giants this morning, one day after he was released by the Cardinals. The Giants were one of four teams that immediately jumped into the bidding, joining the Dolphins, Bears and the Cards, who were still hoping to bring him back."
Giants could be taking the slow approach to adding a middle linebacker
"The Giants are addressing their needs at safety, as expected, by bringing in Antrel Rolle Friday. As for their other top need at middle linebacker, all's quiet so far. Karlos Dansby is set to visit the Dolphins Friday, while ESPN is reporting the Colts have reached an agreement on a new contract with Gary Brackett. Those two dominoes fell pretty much as we expected. The next-best unrestricted free agent is Larry Foote, the longtime Steeler who converted to a 4-3 defense for the Lions last year. But Foote's agent, Brian Levy, tells me the Giants are not one of the teams making a push for his client. One of the top restricted free agents is the Browns' D'Qwell Jackson, who received a ..."
Giants expected to host free agent defensive back Antrel Rolle Friday, report says
"The official start of free agency is less than an hour away, but the Giants are already cranking on at least one player. The team is in the mix for former Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle and, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the 2009 Pro Bowl selection is expected to be in East Rutherford for a visit Friday. While we're handing out credit for scoops, let's mention Adam Schein of Sirius Radio, SNY, FOXSports.com and your corner bodega because he's been talking Rolle to the Giants for a few days now. I was telling my man Scheiner I was hearing similar stuff, but I'd be lying if I said I was as strong on this one as he was from the jump. One other guy who had picked up on some ..."
New York Giants need free-agent LBs but may not spend big bucks
"The Giants are preaching fiscal sanity again, just like they did last year on the eve of free agency - before they tried to dump $80 million in Albert Haynesworth's lap. So, with the market set to open at midnight tonight, do they have another surprise in store? Publicly they haven't ruled anything out - including a run at top free agents such as linebacker Karlos Dansby and defensive end Julius Peppers. But privately, team sources say: Don't count on it. Not in this watered-down free agent market. "We'll spend where we have to spend," Giants GM Jerry Reese said. "I still believe you do what you do to fill the spots in your roster you need to fill. We have a budget. We'll try to stick to ..."
Giants have plenty of needs but won't overspend in free agency
"With free agency set to begin at midnight Thursday night, the Giants are taking the approach they won't spend for the sake of spending. Okay, then how about spending for the sake of a roster that needs help? This team has a few holes that need filling and could use depth in certain key spots. A look at the Giants' positions of need and a guess as to which free agents could be on their radar: SAFETY THE SKINNY: The Giants have one player at this position they can rely upon – and they can't even rely upon him. That player, of course, is Kenny Phillips. If healthy, he's a multi-Pro Bowl selection in the making. But that's a big "if," and even general manager Jerry Reese said, "I don't think ..."
Cardinals interested in NY Giants backup quarterback David Carr, report says
"David Carr wants a shot at a starting quarterback job once again. Perhaps the Cardinals will be the team to give him that chance. The Cards are interested in the Giants' backup, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. So says Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic. The 30-year-old Carr admitted recently he fell out of love with football after a disastrous experience with the Texans, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 2002. It wasn't until Carr arrived in East Rutherford two years ago that his passion for the game was rekindled. Carr has enjoyed his time with the Giants so much that he wouldn't mind coming back for a third season. But more than that, Carr wants a legit ..."
Defensive guns lurk on Giants' radar
"The Giants last year in free agency appeared to hit the lottery, collecting four veterans to bolster a defense that headed into training camp seemingly loaded at every position. But none of the four imports panned out -- injuries did in Chris Canty, Michael Boley, Rocky Bernard, and C.C. Brown -- and the defense crumbled. The signing period begins at midnight tonight and the teams that strike quickly will be deemed big winners, even though history indicates that's often not the case. As an intriguing twist there's no salary cap for the first time since 1993 and how that affects the marketplace is anyone's guess. "We'll spend where we have to spend," general manager Jerry Reese said. "We ..."
Giants extend tender to restricted free agent safety C.C. Brown, report says
"In news that will go over with Giants fans about as well as the AIG bonuses being paid went over with everyone except AIG execs, the Giants have extended a tender to safety C.C. Brown, according to a report on FOXSports.com. The report says it's a low tender of $1.226 million and that the Giants won't receive any compensation if another team signs him away from them. (Don't sweat it.) Brown's agent, Chad Wiestling, confirmed the report. Anyway, back to Brown. There are a couple of reasons why no one should panic about this development. The first one is the fact the contract isn't guaranteed at all. If the Giants cut Brown before the start of the season, they owe him nothing. The other ..."
Uncertain labor situation means few deals at NFL Combine as free agency approaches
"There was a lot less secrecy, fewer clandestine meetings in hotel lobbies and restaurants, a scarcity of rumors in the hallway outside the agents' meeting and a general lack of buzz. At this year's NFL Scouting Combine, most of the news had to do with, you know, actual scouting of draft hopefuls. An uncertain labor situation that will likely result in far fewer unrestricted free agents turned an event that's typically a gathering of deal makers into a convention of shoulder shruggers. Only a few days before Friday's opening of free agency, those involved admitted they would be leaving the Combine as uncertain on the process as when they arrived. "Talking to the agents for our players, they ..."
NFL beat writers say New Meadowlands will get 2014 Super Bowl
"New York still has two more months to complete its 2014 Super Bowl bid. But the New York push to host the biggest game in sports gained momentum on Friday when the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee withdrew its bid. New York, Tampa and Miami are the remaining candidates, with bids due May 1 and owners voting on the host city on May 24-26. "I've been confident from the beginning, and there remains a lot of work to be done to earn this exciting opportunity," Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson said Saturday. "However, I know we are up to the challenge of hosting the biggest game on the biggest stage in the world." With the backing of commissioner Roger Goodell, the Giants and Jets are hoping ..."
LB Dansby expected to draw heavy interest
"The third in a three-part series on NFL free agents. Karlos Dansby would look good in a Giants uniform, but Big Blue will need to get in line if they want the veteran linebacker when free agency starts Friday. That's explained by the dearth of talented and experienced players at Dansby's position, with it looking like the NFL will operate without a salary cap in 2010. Dansby is a serviceable linebacker who occasionally posted big sack numbers with the Cardinals. But with the market likely depleted by so many players being made restricted free agents if no labor deal is reached, he could soon cash in to the tune of $30 million or more because of heavy interest from the Dolphins, Chargers, ..."
Disgruntled Osi Umenyiora meets with NY Giants general manager to discuss future
"Osi Umenyiora wanted a meeting with Giants brass to discuss his future and decide whether he wants to remain with the team. Umenyiora got his meeting, but might need at least one more because he has yet to make the decision on his future. The two-time Pro Bowl defensive end, whose tumultuous 2009 season resulted in his being demoted from a starter to a situational pass-rusher, sat down with Giants general manager Jerry Reese last week, according to Umenyiora's agent, Tony Agnone. "They had a nice, long chat," Agnone said here at the NFL Scouting Combine. "And they'll continue to talk. They have a lot to discuss." Though Agnone declined to provide the specifics of Umenyiora's meeting with ..."
Dansby a Giant option
"With reports surfacing that the Cardinals will not place the franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby for a third consecutive year, one of the NFL's best defensive players without a contract is headed toward free agency when the signing period begins March 5. That at least would give the Giants a chance to sniff around before deciding whether or not to try to place Dansby into their shopping basket. The release of Antonio Pierce leaves the Giants without a proven or experienced middle linebacker, but if they want to pursue Dansby they are going to have to go against their long-standing track record of steering clear of the most expensive players. The Cardinals retained Dansby the past two ..."
Free agent kicker Nick Folk to try out for NY Giants, report says
"The Giants have been looking at kickers to push Lawrence Tynes since early last season and recently added one in Sam Swank. Apparently, they're not done looking. Former Cowboys kicker Nick Folk is on his way to the area for a tryout with the Giants and Jets, according to a report on ProFootballTalk.com. Folk, 25, was cut by the Cowboys last December after missing a 24-yard field goal in a victory over the Saints he could have made much easier by making the kick. Folk was a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie season of 2007 but made only 18 of 28 field-goal attempts last season. Tynes is entering the third season of a five-year deal signed after the run to Super Bowl XLII. He was relegated to ..."
Look for the Giants to make a move in either free agency or the draft
"With Thursday's news that the New York Giants plan to release middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, the organization sent a message. Last season just wasn't good enough. Owner John Mara made it clear at the conclusion of the season that he wasn't happy with how the team performed in 2009. Finishing 8-8 is one thing. But finishing 8-8 after starting the year 5-0 is an entirely different story. Remember, this is a team that is just two years removed from winning the Super Bowl. The overhaul started when Bill Sheridan was fired just one season after taking over as the team's defensive coordinator and was replaced by former Buffalo Bills head coach Perry Fewell. And the defensive makeover ..."
Giants cut Pierce ... Anyone want him?
"My buddy Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger in Jersey is reporting at this hour that the Giants have cut veteran middle linebacker Antonio Pierce. I'm sure you guys would wonder what kind of fit he'd be in Foxborough. First and foremost, the Patriots could use another linebacker to pair with Jerod Mayo on the inside of the defense, and the fact that Pierce has experience playing on all three downs would help his cause here. He's never been too much of a big-play guy, though he'll make some, but at his best, Pierce is a smart, steady tackling machine. The drawback, from a physical standpoint, would be his size. If the Patriots brought him in, they'd likely want him to play the "Ted Johnson" ..."
Giants release linebacker Antonio Pierce
"After five seasons, a Super Bowl championship, a tumultuous 2008 season, an air horn in the locker room, a serious neck injury and plenty of other ups and downs as an outspoken defensive captain, Antonio Pierce's time with the Giants is over. The team has released its middle linebacker, Pierce said in an e-mail Thursday afternoon. Pierce, 32, had one season remaining on the contract he signed as a free agent in 2005. But a bulging disk suffered last season might have played into the Giants' decision to cut him now. "I'm doing great, feeling great," Pierce wrote. "Looking forward to endless possibilities. Loved every moment as a NY GIANT.""
FOX reporter: Giants would be 'crazy' to swap Umenyiora for Rhodes
"FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer said the possibility of a Kerry Rhodes-Osi Umenyiora trade is unthinkable from a Giants perspective. "I haven't heard anything about that," Glazer said on WFAN this morning. "But if I'm the Jets I'd take that, you kidding me? That's not going to happen, what are you crazy?" The Jets' Rhodes and Giants' Umenyiora were both relegated to limited roles during parts of the season. Rhodes was temporarily banished to the bench for not playing the tough style that head coach Rex Ryan had become accustomed to when he was with the Ravens. Umenyiora started the year at odds with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and ended it as a third-down blitz specialist after ..."
Giants DE Osi Umenyiora says he wants to know future with team by March
"Osi Umenyiora was on South Beach Thursday afternoon, but he wasn't lounging or partying. Quite the contrary, actually. Umenyiora was going up and down Collins Ave., doing promotions for Audi while also hustling to get the word out on his thoughts regarding his football career. And they're the same as they were Wednesday and late in the season: if he's not a starter next season, he doesn't want to be a Giant. "I haven't talked to anybody so I don't know what the situation is, I don't know what's going to happen, but that's the way I feel about the situation and I feel strongly about it, Mike," the two-time Pro Bowl selection said. "I thought last year was just BS. If they don't feel I can ..."
Giants defensive end says he'd rather quit than be a backup next season
"Two years ago, it was Jeremy Shockey's situation that beared watching in the off-season. Last year, it was Plaxico Burress, his legal issues and his trade request. This year, the precarious situation for the Giants is the one involving Osi Umenyiora. The two-time Pro Bowl selection had a rough season in 2009 - from the time he left a team meeting after being criticized by then-defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan to his being relegated to a pass-rush specialist late in the season after concerns about his play against the run. Umenyiora hasn't demanded a trade and only said in late December a few things needed to change before he could agree to return to the Giants. One of those things was ..."
Buccaneers defensive assistant Robert Nunn leaves for Giants
"For the second straight day, the Bucs let a coach out of his contract so he could go to another team. Defensive line coach Robert Nunn was granted permission to interview for the same job with the Giants, who hired him Wednesday. Nunn, 44, who just finished his 10th season in the league, had shared defensive line coaching duties with Todd Wash. GM Mark Dominik said the Bucs traditionally have had one defensive line coach. But Nunn was hired before last season, in part, because of his familiarity with the system of defensive coordinator Jim Bates, who was ousted after 10 games. Coach Raheem Morris will continue to run the defense next season, which will be a variation of the Bucs' ..."
No Fewell for change on Giants 'D' staff
"One day after the Giants ended their season, Tom Coughlin fired defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and two days after that, Coughlin fired defensive line coach Mike Waufle. It seemed like the beginning of a major overhaul to a defensive coaching staff that was helpless to prevent allowing a ghastly 427 points, second most in franchise history. It appears there will be no overhaul. Perry Fewell, hired on Jan. 14 as the Giants' new defensive coordinator, sounds as if he's happy with the staff he's inherited and that no major changes are forthcoming. "I have a lot of confidence in the staff that's presently here," Fewell said yesterday on Sirius NFL Radio. "Both secondary coaches [Peter ..."
Giants sign tight end Carson Butler for 2010 season
"The Giants continued to add bodies for the upcoming season Tuesday by signing tight end Carson Butler to a reserve/future contract. Butler (6-4, 260 pounds) was signed by the Packers last year as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan but was released before camp. He then latched on with the Lions and remained with Detroit through the preseason. Butler had 59 yards on four catches in the preseason, including a 20-yard touchdown against the Browns. Butler was cut by Detroit before the start of the season and made brief stints on the practice squads of the 49ers and Bengals. Butler is a developmental project who left college early because of the switch from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez and ..."
Another bad season may force New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin out of his job
"Bill Cowher was on the Jets' coaching short list last year, but he removed himself from consideration when Woody Johnson declined to cut short his vacation abroad and meet face-to-face. They never even spoke on the phone. But might Cowher, who has been spending his football weekends in New York the last three years in the CBS studio, be taking up permanent residence around here in 2011 as the Giants next coach? Cowher wants the Giants job, former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis told Sirius XM this past week. Now Cowher is too sensitive to coaches to be publicly campaigning for jobs, especially Tom Coughlin's job. They spent a lot of time together last summer on the NFL-USO Coaches Tour ..."
Jerome Bettis says Bill Cowher waiting on New York Giants head coaching job
"Bill Cowher wants to be the next head coach of the Giants. At least, he does according to Jerome Bettis, Cowher's former running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bettis said the reason Cowher hasn't returned to coach is because he's "holding out" for the Giants job to open up. In fact, he told Chris "Mad Dog" Russo Thursday on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Radio that Cowher would have gotten the Giants' job in 2008 if Tom Coughlin hadn't taken the Giants on that magical, Super Bowl XLII run. "That's the team that he really coveted," Bettis said. "This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he's been very close to them. … He's known them very well and was on the inside track - before ..."
Bettis says Cowher waiting to coach Giants
"Bill Cowher is going to be the next head coach of the Giants. So says someone fairly close to Cowher: Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis. "I believe he's going to be with the Giants,'' Bettis said Thursday on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Radio. "I think that's the team that he really coveted. This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he's been very close to them. He's known them very well and was on the inside track, before the Giants won the Super Bowl, for that job and I think he's holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.'' Asked what would have happened if the Giants in 2007 didn't make their Super Bowl run under Tom Coughlin, Bettis said Cowher would have ..."
Despite reports to the contrary, Perry Fewell has yet to make a decision between Giants and Bears
"Thursday afternoon, ESPN reporting former Bills defensive coordinator and interim coach Perry Fewell has opted to join the Giants over a reunion with Lovie Smith in Chicago. The report stated Fewell has not informed the Giants of his decision yet, but that the team has been told "they can expect to land their man." But according to someone informed of Fewell's thinking, there should be no expectations for either the Bears or Giants. The person, who requested anonymity because the process is ongoing, said Fewell has yet to make a final decision on the whether to join the Giants or the Bears. (Or, of course, the Bills, who interviewed him for their head coaching gig and have yet to rule him ..."
Perry Fewell plans to accept NY Giants defensive coordinator job, report says
"The Giants have been waiting for Perry Fewell's decision on whether to accept their defensive coordinator position. According to ESPN, that news is coming, and the Giants will like what they hear. Adam Schefter is reporting Fewell has opted to join the Giants over a reunion with Lovie Smith in Chicago. The report says Fewell has not informed the Giants of his decision yet, but that the team has been told "they can expect to land their man.""
Source: Fewell plans to join Giants
"Former Buffalo Bills interim coach Perry Fewell is planning to accept the New York Giants defensive coordinator position on Thursday, according to a league source. As of late Thursday morning, Fewell hadn't notified Giants of his decision, but the Giants have been informed they can expect to land their man."
Romeo Crennel pursuing job with Kansas City Chiefs, source says
"From the jump, it was pretty clear the Chiefs were the preferred landing spot for Romeo Crennel. Still, Crennel's agent made it clear his client was chatting with the Giants and at least one other mystery team. Well, now Crennel is officially focusing solely on Kansas City. The former Browns coach, an assistant coach with the Giants for more than a decade, has decided to pursue a job with the Chiefs, according to someone familiar with the 62-year-old former Patriots coordinator. The person, who requested anonymity because talks are ongoing, said Crennel's familiarity with Kansas City coach Todd Haley, general manager Scott Pioli and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was a major factor in ..."
Giants spoke with Crennel
"Former Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel has spoken to the Giants by telephone about their vacant defensive coordinator's job but is giving the Kansas City Chiefs the first shot at hiring him. Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Crennel talked to the Giants on Monday. Linta said Crennel is focused on becoming the Chiefs' defensive coordinator. Chiefs coach Todd Haley fired Clancy Pendergast after the regular season ended."
Giants lose candidate?
"Fewell spurns Giants? Giants coach Tom Coughlin's pool of candidates to become his defensive coordinator appears to have dwindled by one. Former Bills interim coach Perry Fewell, who interviewed with Coughlin last week, likely will accept an offer to become the Bears' defensive coordinator when he meets with coach Lovie Smith today, ESPN reported. Fewell left his meeting with Coughlin with the understanding he would call back the Giants after visiting with Smith, a source with knowledge of Fewell's chat with Coughlin said Friday. Fewell entered the NFL as a defensive backs coach under Coughlin with the 1998 Jaguars, but he's also worked with Smith as part of the staff on the Rams and ..."
Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross to interview for Seattle Seahawks general manager position
"If you're happy with what the Giants did in their last two drafts, this won't be good news for you: Marc Ross, the team's director of college scouting, will interview for the Seattle Seahawks' vacant general manager job, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on his Twitter account. 1:37 p.m. UPDATE: Ross' scheduled interview with the Seahawks has been confirmed by someone familiar with the conversation between Ross and the team. The person requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly for Ross or the Seahawks."
Former Giants linebacker Pepper Johnson could be Big Blue's next defensive coordinator, sources say
"Sources say Pepper Johnson, a former Giants linebacker and current Patriots defensive line coach, says he would be "very interested" in becoming the next Giants' defensive coordinator. Tom Coughlin is looking for a coordinator who can return the Giants' defense to its former glory. And to do that, he might reach back into the Giants' past. Pepper Johnson, the former Giants linebacker and current Patriots defensive line coach, is not only a possible candidate, he would also be "very interested" in the job, according to two people familiar with his thinking. He has never been a defensive coordinator, but he has won two Super Bowl rings as a player and three as a Patriots assistant. He also ..."
Giants reportedly want Jets' Sutton
"Might the Giants raid the Jets coaching staff to find a new defensive coordinator? Perhaps. The National Football Post reports that Jets linebackers coach Bob Sutton has been targeted as the replacement for Bill Sheridan, who was fired one day after the Giants completed an 8-8 season. Sutton, the former head coach at Army, has been with the Jets for the past 10 years. He was their defensive coordinator from 2006-08 and has worked for four different head coaches with the Jets, a sign that he's a valued member of the staff. Rex Ryan, when he took over this season, retained Sutton, who has done a solid job developing Jets linebackers. Still, Sutton last year hardly distinguished himself ..."
Several New York Giants players, coaches expect defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan to be fired
"Bill Sheridan's first season as Giants defensive coordinator almost certainly will be his last. Though Tom Coughlin hasn't announced his intentions, several players, coaches and members of the organization all told the Daily News Sunday they expect Sheridan to be fired in the next few days. That's hardly a shock, since the team surrendered 427 points this year - the most since giving up 501 in 1966. Still, Sheridan does have support from several players. Defensive tackle Barry Cofield insisted he "saw a lot of good things" from Sheridan, even though he also said that for the defense the season was "a disaster." "I think he has some good intangibles," Cofield said. "He can do some things ..."
Embattled NY Giants defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan gets vote of confidence from DT Barry Cofield
"It took until after the last of many embarrassing defensive performances for Bill Sheridan to get a detailed, emphatic vote of confidence from one of his players. It came from tackle Barry Cofield following the 44-7 loss to the Vikings in what might have been Sheridan's last game as defensive coordinator. According to Cofield, that shouldn't be the case. "He's a rookie; it's his first year," Cofield said. "Rookie players aren't expected to light the world on fire a lot of times, but coaches don't get that leeway. I wish him nothing but the best, whether that's here or not here. He did some good things for us." Cofield said the players didn't provide any good things in return. For one, they ..."
Osi: "No more part-time work"
"In his current role, Osi Umenyiora stays on the sideline on first down and often on second down, and then if it's a passing situation for the opponent, he will be summoned onto the field to try to get the quarterback. It's a part-time deal for the defensive end. He accepted it as the good ship Giants sunk but he says, moving forward, he will not take it any longer. "I love this team," Umenyiora said yesterday. "I would love to be here, but the situation cannot continue the way it is. Definitely some things are going to be changed but I love the place, I love this organization, the front office and the coaches. I am all in, but I think I am too good of a player for this kind of situation." ..."
Ailing Winfield might get moved around
"The Vikings are contemplating a different or reduced role for Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield this week after watching him struggle the past two games while dealing with a serious foot injury. Winfield, who missed six games after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his right foot, admitted that he's not 100 percent and probably won't be until this offseason. He clearly hasn't looked like the same player the past two weeks. He has given up two long touchdown catches, including the game-winner in overtime against the Bears on Monday night, and has missed a number of tackles. Winfield's play has been uncharacteristically shaky, which has forced the coaching staff to explore ways to help him. ..."
Sheridan expects to be Giants defensive coordinator next season
"Embattled defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan today said he believes the Giants, despite all the injuries that hit his unit, "played honorable defense'' this season despite all the points allowed and the breakdowns that led to a non-playoff season. Sheridan is squarely on the hot-seat and likely will be dismissed following the season, which ends after Sunday's regular-season finale against the Vikings in Minnesota. The Giants have allowed 383 points – only four teams have allowed more – and four times this season gave up 40 or more points. That's the first time since 1966 that's taken place. Despite all the problems, Sheridan said he's proud of the fact that he stuck to his beliefs and ..."
Osi thinks he's goner
"Osi Umenyiora excused himself before going into full pop-off mode by saying, "I can't answer any more questions ... I'll probably say something that will get me really messed up." But Umenyiora already had said plenty yesterday following the Giants' crushing 41-9 loss to the Panthers. Umenyiora, dropped from the starting lineup four games ago because of his ineffectiveness against the run, didn't get on the field much as the Panthers ran the ball 46 times and passed it only 20. "What did I play, five snaps today?" Umenyiora said. He declared this not only his last game at Giants Stadium but "probably as a Giant." That is sure to catch attention of Giants management. He has two years (at ..."
Giants cornerbacks Corey Webster and Aaron Ross are doubtful for game with Carolina Panthers
"Tom Coughlin didn't reveal his Christmas wish list, but if he had, he might have had a healthy Corey Webster and Aaron Ross on it. Coughlin's two best cornerbacks did not practice Thursday and their participation in Sunday's game against the Panthers appears doubtful unless things change quickly. "Maybe something will happen here at Christmas," Coughlin said when asked about Webster's knee injury that kept him out of Monday's win at Washington. "It is supposed to be (not a serious injury), but it is not improving." When asked about Ross and the corner's troublesome hamstring - which led to him being a late scratch prior to the Redskins game - Coughlin replied, "Same.""
Giants WR Steve Smith wants contract extension
"Steve Smith has shown the Giants he can be their No. 1 receiver. Now he wants to be paid like one. Hoping to cash in on the finest season of his three-year career, Smith, through his agent Ralph Cindrich , told the Daily News he's informed the Giants that the receiver wants a contract extension and they plan to press the issue after the season is over. The 24-year-old is signed through 2010 and might still be three years from unrestricted free agency. But after a franchise-record 90 catches for 1,093 yards and six touchdowns so far this season for Smith, Cindrich said he believes the Giants will take care of his client. And he said that Smith wants to be in New York for a very long ..."
Aaron Ross' hamstring not torn, could miss game against Carolina Panthers
"Giants cornerback Aaron Ross said the MRI on his troubled left hamstring did not reveal any new tears, but that doesn't mean his troubles are over. Ross, who missed the Giants' game in Washington because his hamstring tightened up in practice last Saturday, said Wednesday that his injury "hasn't gone away." He said he still feels tightness in the hamstring that has already been torn three times since August. He was limited at the Giants' light practice Wednesday, and his status for the Giants' game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday is unclear."
Lingering sore hamstring likely to sideline Ross again
"The Giants thought Aaron Ross had a chance to recover from the tightness in his left hamstring and get on the field Monday night to face the Redskins, but it didn't happen. And it doesn't look as if it will happen for Ross on Sunday against the Panthers. Ross said a recent MRI revealed he did not suffer a new tear in his hamstring, which since the summer has been torn in three different places as he missed the first nine games of the season. But he added that the tightness "still hasn't gone away." The Giants beat the Redskins 45-12 despite the absence of Ross and Corey Webster at cornerback."
Giants sign tight end Scott Chandler off Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, source says
"Here's a head-scratching move: the Giants have signed tight end Scott Chandler off the Cowboys' practice squad, according to someone informed of the transaction. The person requested anonymity because the team hasn't yet announced the move. The 6-7, 265-pound Chandler, a former fourth-round pick of the Chargers in 2007, has played in only one NFL game.
