Giants Trade Rumors

Return of Boley, Canty provide Giant upgrade
"Help is on the way to aid the ailing Giants defense. Linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Chris Canty are both scheduled to take part in practice tomorrow when the Giants begin their on-field preparation for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Last week, the injured duo took part in some individual drills, but this week they will be pushed even further. They certainly are needed, with the Giants riding a three-game losing streak. Moving Boley, who has missed the last four games, to weak side linebacker and Canty, who has missed the past seven games, into the middle of the defensive line rotation would be significant upgrades for a defense that has allowed 112 points in the past ..."
Boss Says Hard Hit Did Not Give Him a Concussion
"Giants tight end Kevin Boss said Monday that he did not sustain a concussion when he was hit on the head during the team's 24-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night. But Boss, who was hit helmet to helmet by safety Antrel Rolle after a 25-yard reception with 4 minutes 45 seconds to play, said, "It feels like I've gotten in a car wreck." "Anytime you get hit that hard, definitely the lights turn off for a second," Boss said. "But I came to pretty quick." No penalty was called on the play. Eli Manning escaped unscathed physically, but he threw three interceptions and took two delay-of-game penalties as the Giants (5-2) lost their second consecutive game."
Manning Practices; Coughlin Hopeful
"The Giants received a dose of good injury news Friday, when quarterback Eli Manning practiced for the first time this week. With his right heel heavily taped, Manning took about half the snaps and had no trouble dropping back or launching deep passes, in addition to running and stretching with the team. He is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders, but Coach Tom Coughlin said he was "absolutely" encouraged by what he saw from Manning, who injured the plantar fascia during last Sunday's victory against the Chiefs."
Manning is "questionable" after "fine" practice
"Eli Manning was officially listed as questionable on the Giants' injury report today, meaning we're really no closer to knowing whether he'll play on Sunday. And according to Tom Coughlin, it's likely nobody will be sure until just a few hours before the game. The signs are encouraging, though, after Manning "did fine" in his first practice of the week today. Coughlin said Manning took about half the snaps with the first-team offense, but the guarded coach revealed little more than that. Asked if Manning reported any discomfort, Coughlin said "Not that I'm going to mention to you." Manning, in an unusual move for a normally cooperative player, declined through a team spokesman to address ..."
With Eli Manning iffy, New York Giants warm up to quarterback David Carr
"Eli Manning did not practice for the second straight day Thursday as he continued to rehab a plantar fascia injury to his right foot. While Manning was not available to talk to reporters, Tom Coughlin said his quarterback was making progress. "Yes, a little bit better each time he comes in," said Coughlin, who acknowledged on Wednesday that the quarterback could be a game-time decision against the Raiders on Sunday and can play without practice time. "He spends about 24 hours working on it. So it is good to see the progress, even if it is small." While Manning stayed inside to rehab his ailing foot, backup David Carr took first-team reps for the second consecutive day and marveled at the ..."
Eli sits & hopes
"The sense from Tom Coughlin was that Eli Manning arrived to work yesterday and seemed "anxious." Manning, battling through an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot, wanted to practice but was quickly told it wasn't going to happen. One of the attributes that attracted the Giants to Manning is that he's level-headed. Manning quickly considered his options and realized the best way for him to get on the field Sunday against the Raiders was to sit this one out. And so, while the Giants went through their drills inside their field house, Manning stayed behind for treatment. "In talking with the coaches I feel like I've been practicing well, playing good football, been kind of in a ..."
Manning's injury overshadows Giants' 27-16 domination of Chiefs
"The road-warrior Giants will triumphantly return home next Sunday with control of the NFC East after sweeping a three-game road trip. They just don't know if their franchise quarterback will be with them when they do. The excitement of another easy win, this time 27-16 over the Kansas City Chiefs (0-4), was dampened by the sight of Manning limping toward the locker room after the game with an injured right foot. The Giants (4-0) are calling it a "bruised heel," but Manning said what he felt was more of a pull or a strain. He also said he didn't think the injury was "awful" and he doesn't expect to miss a game after making 82 straight starts for the Giants, including the playoffs. But ..."
Giants defensive end Justin Tuck "day to day" with shoulder injury, coach Tom Coughlin says
"Tom Coughlin is hoping Justin Tuck will be ready to play on Sunday against the Buccaneers. The Pro Bowl defensive end suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's victory over the Cowboys when he was tripped by offensive tackle Flozell Adams. Coughlin didn't provide Tuck's exact injury but said he's "day to day" and that the injury is something that first occurred during Tuck's time at Notre Dame, when it lingered through his junior season after he was hurt during spring practice. He did not miss a game that year. "That's where the doctors go back to," Coughlin said of the college injury. "It's a matter of soreness and strength, soreness and strength. Who knows? Maybe he'll end up wearing a ..."
Nicked-up Nicks will miss 2 weeks
"It could have been worse. That's the thought-process of the Giants after seeing rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks carted off to the locker room during Sunday's 23-17 victory over the Redskins. Nicks suffered a sprained left foot, and an MRI confirmed the sprained ligament was the extent of the damage. He will miss at least two weeks and then be re-evaluated. "That will be tough for us," Steve Smith said. "We're not that deep and he's a great receiver, so hopefully he gets back." Nicks caught two passes for 18 yards in his Giants debut and his development process comes to a screeching halt as he mends. "They are going to have to be temporarily shut down," Tom Coughlin said. RB Danny Ware ..."
David Tyree hopes to catch on with Ravens
"David Tyree, the currently unemployed hero of Super Bowl XLII, worked out for the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday. Tyree, who was cut by the Giants on Saturday, was one of several players who worked out for Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome and team scouts, an NFL source confirmed. The Ravens have only four receivers on their 53-man roster and appear to need more, although coach John Harbaugh has said he's OK with opening the season with that number. It's likely the Ravens were just taking a look at Tyree in case they decide to add a receiver a few weeks from now."
Redskins' signing of Woodson upsets Giants
"New York coach Tom Coughlin wasn't happy the Washington Redskins claimed former Giants quarterback Andre Woodson off waivers and signed him to their practice squad less than a week before the teams meet in Sunday's season opener. "That's pretty obvious why he is there," Coughlin told reporters Monday when asked whether Woodson could reveal some of the Giants' plans to the Redskins. "A guy doesn't get in the door two seconds, he is in the classroom and being drilled." Redskins coach Jim Zorn acknowledged Coughlin's concerns but said Washington had considered the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Woodson in the 2008 draft because of his size, mobility, strong arm and presence before opting to pick Colt ..."
Eli emotional as Tyree cut looms
"David Tyree last week sounded resigned to his fate, that there is simply no place for him on the Giants this season. Eli Manning yesterday sounded the same way, and the quarterback who teamed with Tyree for the signature moment in Super Bowl XLII said he is saddened if this indeed is the end of Tyree's six-year Giants career. The final roster cut to the 53-player limit comes today. "David is a guy who really conducts himself on a true professional level," Manning said. "He's always got a great attitude, he's always in great spirits. He's been a great teammate, a great friend of mine ever since I've gotten here. Obviously, he'll always have a special place in my heart, not only because of ..."
Plane with NY Giants logo in Denver apparently had nothing to do with Brandon Marshall
"The plane with the Giants logo that has sparked an overnight Internet frenzy of rumors of an impending trade of Brandon Marshall to the Giants appears to have been making nothing more than a coincidental trip to Denver. In talking with folks in the know Thursday, I'm told the plane was not there as part of a meeting between any team officials and Marshall. Plus, a team spokesman said the Giants do not own a private plane. None of the members of the Mara family owns a plane. There is a plane owned by the Tisch family, though it's unclear if it's marked with the Giants' "NY" logo."
Chris Canty 'very hopeful' to play in season opener after platelet-rich plasma therapy
"You'd have to figure a few teammates would have been squeamish upon hearing the details of Chris Canty's platelet-rich plasma therapy session from Monday in which his blood was withdrawn, centrifuged and reinjected to aid in the recovery of his torn hamstring. "I'll tell you what -- I was a little squeamish when I saw the tube of blood they took out of me. That thing was huge," the Giants' defensive tackle said Wednesday in the locker room after practice. "That was the worst part. It wasn't too painful and it was very quick." And it might have shown some immediate results. Canty said he felt less tightness and soreness in his hamstring Wednesday and he was able to jog a bit on the side ..."
Donovan McNabb says signing Plaxico Burress would be worth a shot
"Donovan McNabb, who endorsed the Eagles bringing in convicted felon Michael Vick, said Mondayhe would not be opposed to the team adding former Giant Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress. The wide receiver faces a trial on gun possession charges in New York and a potential NFL suspension. "I don't think he would hurt," McNabb said. "We have some great guys here at our receiver position but whatever you can do to enhance the team, you would look into it.""
Giants make Eli $106 million man
"Eli Manning is about to become the highest-paid player in the NFL. The Giants quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP has agreed to a new seven-year, $106.9 million contract that he is expected to sign later today, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Though it's not the largest deal in NFL history, the average of $15.27 million per year is a new NFL high. That deal has been in the works since last year, as the Daily News first reported in January. Though hit didn't quite hit the $120 million mark that NFL sources expected, it still made Manning the eighth member of the $100 million Quarterback Club. The deal is actually a six-year, $97.5 million extension which will keep ..."
Giants Sign 2nd-Round Picks
"With a hefty nine players taken in the NFL Draft, the Giants had plenty of negotiating work to do to get them all signed and at training camp on time. They took a major step in that direction with yesterday's signings of their two second-round picks, linebacker Clint Sintim and offensive tackle William Beatty. To make room on the roster, the Giants waived receiver Micah Rucker and linebacker Kelvin Smith. The only unsigned draft pick is first-round pick Hakeem Nicks, who figures in the immediate plans as a possession receiver for the revamped wide receiver corps. Reporting day at the University at Albany is Sunday and the first practice of camp is Monday morning, leaving time to get ..."
Nothing imminent on Eli's contract
"The Giants are busy signing their second-round picks and are working to get the deal done with their first-rounder as we speak. But the long anticipated extension for Eli Manning, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, is not nearly as close to completion. According to one person familiar with the negotiations, no deal between the team and the quarterback is imminent, and while both sides would still like to have a deal in place before Manning becomes a free agent after this 2009 season, the closest the source would give for a timeline on getting a pact done was: "Eventually." Back in January, with the shadows of the playoff loss to the Eagles still lingering and talk ..."
Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce could still face charges for role in Plaxico Burress case, report says
"It's been almost eight months to the day Plaxico Burress shot himself in the thigh in a Manhattan night club. Eight months since Antonio Pierce then took his friend to the hospital and allegedly returned the gun to Burress' Totowa home. But eight months without charges against Pierce apparently doesn't mean they're not coming. The New York Post reported in Monday's editions Pierce is "still on the hook" for possible gun possession charges and that prosecutors have considered "flipping" an unidentified Latin Quarter night club security worker to bring charges against Pierce. This information came in a larger story about Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau's insisting Burress will do jail time ..."
Jets, Giants Have 'No Interest' In Ex-Falcons QB
"If Michael Vick manages to get reinstated into the NFL, don't expect to see him playing for either local team. Both John Mara and Woody Johnson shot down any possibility the former Falcons quarterback, whose 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring ended yesterday, would suit up for either team. "No," Giants owner Mara said with a laugh. "On a lot of levels, no." Johnson was also adamant about Vick not becoming a Jet. "There's no interest," said Johnson. The Jets have had plenty of issues at quarterback in recent years and drafted USC's Mark Sanchez with the fifth pick in this year's draft. He will battle with Kellen Clemens for the starting spot. "We've got Kellen Clemens and ..."
Sources: Burress, Vick likely to get stiff penalties
"NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is leaning toward indefinitely suspending former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress(notes) and continuing to sideline quarterback Michael Vick(notes), three sources with knowledge of the situations have indicated. Such moves would be the latest examples of Goodell's tough stance on players embroiled in off-field issues as evidenced with the suspension of Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth(notes) earlier this month. Stallworth has been ruled out indefinitely by the league after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter in the death of a Miami man in March. Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of house arrest and reached a ..."
Giants, Andre Brown agree to terms
"Five down, four to go. Running back Andre Brown, the Giants' fourth-round draft choice (129th overall out of N.C. State), agreed to terms earlier today on a four-year contract. That came one day after the Giants announced the signings of their third-round pick (WR Ramses Barden) and their fifth-round pick (QB Rhett Bomar). They now have five of their nine draft picks under contract with a little more than five weeks to go before the start of training camp. When Brown officially signs his deal, the Giants must cut one player from their roster. The terms of Brown's deal were not immediately available. Barden, according to an NFL source, got a four-year deal worth approximately $2.5 million. ..."
Quarterback Eli Manning aiming high in quest for next Giant payday
"Eli Manning is still in line to get one of the most lucrative contracts in NFL history. He is just going to have to wait a little longer than expected. Manning and the Giants remain far apart in their negotiations on a new deal, according to two NFL sources with knowledge of the talks. Nobody is panicking, even though 2009 is the last year of Manning's rookie contract, and both sides expect a deal will eventually get done. But they had originally hoped to do it this spring, with the Giants prepared to make Manning one of the NFL's richest players. According to one source, Manning's agents "want to make him the highest-paid player." Another source suggested the Super Bowl XLII MVP's initial ..."
Grand jury could throw Plaxico Burress off track
"Not so fast, Plax. A Manhattan grand jury will hear the case against the gun-toting Super Bowl hero next month, raising the possibility of a trial that could bench Plaxico Burress this season. Although Burress' next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 23, the timetable could change depending on when the grand jury reaches a decision, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said yesterday. A quick indictment would raise the possibility of a trial during the NFL season. If there is no indictment, Burress would face only possible disciplinary action from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Defense attorney Benjamin Brafman said after a brief Manhattan court hearing on Monday that the ..."
Former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress interested in Tampa Bay
"Plaxico Burress is intent on playing in 2009, and it appears he wouldn't mind doing so in Tampa Bay. The former Giants receiver, who is embroiled in a legal snafu and faces weapons charges in New York after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound last year, reached out to Bucs RB Derrick Ward and others on the team to express an interest in joining them. Coach Raheem Morris made the revelation on Tuesday, the first day of the team's mandatory minicamp. The Bucs are open to upgrading at receiver, and Burress, 31, suddenly is a more realistic option. He is one step closer to returning to the field after his case on Monday was continued until September. If no plea deal is reached before ..."
Agent says Plaxico Burress could play in 2009
"Plaxico Burress didn't move any closer to resolving his court case Monday, but his agent ramped up efforts to land a job for the free-agent wide receiver. Burress' trial on gun possession charges was adjourned until Sept. 23, and attorney Benjamin Brafman called it ''inconceivable'' his client could stand trial before 2010, meaning he could be able to play football this season. But the unknown remains how the NFL will handle Burress' case. Traditionally, commissioner Roger Goodell waits to rule on player-conduct issues until after the legal system has done its part. The trick is, Goodell doesn't have to wait for the slow wheels of justice to turn in this case. ''We are also confident that ..."
Plaxico Catches A Break
"In a sweetheart arrangement that will likely allow him to play for millions of dollars this season, gunslinging ex-Giant Plaxico Burress won't see a felony indictment for at least another 13 weeks -- thanks to a delay approved by Manhattan prosecutors yesterday. Under the delay, Sept. 23, his next court date, is the earliest Burress will learn if he's been indicted after shooting himself in the thigh with an unlicensed gun in a crowded nightclub way back on Nov. 29, 2008. By that time, the superstar receiver will likely already be playing for any of the "several" unnamed teams he's already in talks with, said his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman. Meanwhile, a grand jury has yet to even be convened ..."
Jets Keeping An Eye On Plaxico Burress
"Keep an eye on the Plaxico Burress situation, because the Jets, in need of an experienced big-play receiver, are closely monitoring it and have not ruled out signing him, according to team sources. The former Steelers and Giants wide receiver had the weapons-possession case against him adjourned until Sept. 23. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said yesterday that he doesn't expect a trial to begin until 2010, meaning Burress could be available to play the 2009 season. Burress, who was released by the Giants in April and now is an unrestricted free agent, is free to resume his NFL career, though it's not certain what action NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will take in the way of a possible ..."
Ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress to face grand jury in September over gun charges
"There's no more delay of game for Plaxico Burress, whose fate will now be in the hands of a Manhattan grand jury. Grand jurors will determine by Sept. 23 whether or not to indict the gunslinging former New York Giants receiver, who is facing gun charges after he blasted himself in the thigh last year at a Midtown nightclub with an illegal Glock. But the looming criminal case isn't likely to interfere with Burress suiting up this season, his lawyer said - provided a team takes a chance on the troubled wideout. "Given the present posture of his case, I do not see any reason why he should not be able to play this entire season," said Benjamin Brafman, a defense lawyer for Burress. Burress is ..."
Idea of signing Plaxico Burress catching on fast with Jets
"Brash Rex Ryan doesn't do coy too often, but he's taking that approach, publicly anyway, with regard to the Jets' interest in Plaxico Burress. In his locker room, though, the feeling is loud and clear: Get him if you can. Several veteran leaders said they would enthusiastically welcome the talented but disgraced wide receiver, suggesting he could be the missing piece for a potential championship run. "We've got a strong locker room and a strong locker room can deal with, quote-unquote, guys like that," tackle Damien Woody said ' at the Jets' minicamp in Florham Park. "I don't see any problem bringing in a guy like Plaxico." Said former Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard, who faced Burress ..."
Bears players would love to land Plaxico Burress
"Jerry Angelo's door remains open when it comes to adding a veteran wide receiver. Bears players would like to say ''come on in'' to Plaxico Burress. The general manager has not ruled out anything, and in an offseason like none the franchise has seen, everything is in play eight weeks before training camp. That includes Burress, the former New York Giants receiver who remains without a team while the NFL waits to see how his gun charge proceeds in New York courts. Burress could be the final piece in a vast reshaping of the roster over the last two months, keyed by the April 2 trade for quarterback Jay Cutler. It was shortly after the deal that Burress told Bears' radio sideline reporter ..."
New Agent Likely For Boldin
"If receiver Anquan Boldin hires Tom Condon as his new agent -- that's where Boldin reportedly is leaning -- might the Giants have an edge if Boldin is traded, considering Condon also represents Eli Manning? No one knows, but there's no harm in speculating. Boldin last week fired Drew Rosenhaus and soon will hire his fourth different agent since he was drafted in 2003. Boldin is not satisfied with his contract with the Cardinals -- he has $5.75 million owed him the next two years -- and through Rosenhaus has sought a mega-deal or a trade. There's been no progress, which is why Rosenhaus is gone and Condon could soon represent Boldin. Boldin continues to be a no-show at offseason workouts. ..."
Plaxico Burress turned down plea bargain to three-month sentence for gun possession
"Back in March, ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported Plaxico Burress had declined a couple of plea bargains his lawyer had worked out for him. (Sorry, I can't find a link and I'm not sure it was ever written, though I know Paolantonio reported it on-air.) Then, last month, ProFootballTalk.com delivered a similar report. Now, Bob Papa, the Giants' radio play-by-play man (as well as a Sirius/XM Radio host and the voice of NFL Network's live games) has the details of what he's heard Burress has turned down. "This is what I've been told and what I've heard," Papa said this morning on Sirius NFL Radio's "Morning Drive" program. "They worked out something where they had it down to about a three-month ..."
Giant Step? Boldin Fires His Agent
"The Anquan Boldin-to-the-Giants murmurs that were clearly audible a few months ago could increase in volume with yesterday's news that Boldin -- frustrated he hasn't received a new contract or been traded from the Cardinals -- will fire his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The change in Boldin's representation, first reported on ESPN.com, is no doubt intended to shake things up around a 28-year old receiver who has two years left on the $22.25 million deal he signed in 2005. Once the Cardinals in 2008 shelled out $10 million a year for Larry Fitzgerald, Boldin sought to wet his beak and wanted his contract ripped up and inflated to match or come close to Fitzgerald's. The Cardinals are unwilling to ..."
Giants trade target Braylon Edwards reaffirms commitment to Cleveland Browns
"Braylon Edwards said he wants to remain with the Cleveland Browns after rumors for most of the offseason had him headed to the Giants via a trade. An ESPN report cites the lanky wide receiver as saying he is committed to the Browns and is hoping to redeem himself after a disappointing 2008 season in which he had just 55 catches and three touchdowns. "I didn't get excited [about the rumors]," Edwards, a free agent after the 2009 season, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "One, they were rumors and there was nothing to hold on to. And two, I felt like if I would have left Cleveland for any reason, I would have left with a bad taste in my mouth."
Is IR system in line for a change?
"When the NFL adopted its system for placing players on season-ending injured reserve, the main issue was stashing. Teams had long been allowed to place players on injured reserve and bring them back later in the season. But some felt that clubs were circumventing the rule by placing players who weren't truly injured on IR, opening a roster spot for someone else. Thus, a competitive advantage was scored. Colts president Bill Polian remembers high-profile coaches and personnel executives, such as Don Shula and Jim Finks, pushing for a change to combat stashing, and it finally came in 1993, when the league made two significant adjustments. At that time, players placed on injured reserve would ..."
Plaxico Burress drawing serious interest from at least two teams
"Even though he faces the likelihood of jail time, former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress is drawing interest from "at least two teams that are very serious about signing him," according to his agent. The receiver-needy Jets could be one of those teams. They acknowledged a call to the agent, Drew Rosenhaus, before last month's draft, and they continue to keep tabs on Burress. Owner Woody Johnson told the Daily News two weeks ago that he wouldn't stand in the way if GM Mike Tannenbaum wants to sign the controversial player. On Thursday, Burress received a call from an unnamed head coach, according to Rosenhaus, who issued a BurressFriday via his Twitter account. The agent also tweeted ..."
Agent: 2 Teams Targeting Plax
"Two NFL teams are "very serious" about signing former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, his agent said yesterday. Drew Rosenhaus used his Twitter page to announce, "Ran wind sprints with Plaxico Burress. There are at least 2 teams that are very serious about signing him so he has stayed in great shape." Rosenhaus also wrote, "Plaxico got a call from an NFL head coach yesterday and he will be meeting with senior NFL executives in the near future." Rosenhaus did not specify the teams nor the head coach."
Christ the King product Maurice Evans has Giant shot with Big Blue
"Maurice Evans swears he doesn't think much about what could have been in his life, but it had to be on his mind at least a little on draft day when the Buffalo Bills made Aaron Maybin the No. 11 pick. Maybin, after all, was once a backup defensive end at Penn State, slotted behind the Brooklyn-born Evans. And Evans, fresh off a 12-1/2-sack season in 2007 as a sophomore, was the one who looked like the budding star. But that was before campus police responded to a complaint about loud music coming from Evans' apartment last September, found some pot and charged him and a teammate with minor possession of marijuana. Evans, the former Christ the King star, was suspended by Joe Paterno for the ..."
New York Giants backup quarterback Andre Woodson feeling pressure to keep job
"When the Giants selected Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar with their fifth-round pick in this year's draft, Andre Woodson -- last year's sixth-round choice -- insists he didn't start squirming in his seat. "I didn't really have a big reaction," Woodson said yesterday. "I know this is the NFL, and you've got to compete for your spot, so that's what I'm doing." But the pressure is definitely on Woodson, who struggled through the preseason last year and spent the fall on the Giants practice squad. The addition of Bomar means his bid for a roster spot as the third quarterback behind Eli Manning and David Carr will be tighter. At this weekend's rookie minicamp -- which Woodson was ..."
Unclear if veteran receiver Amani Toomer is on Chicago Bears' radar
"Steve Wyche of the NFL Network reported that the Bears place a called to free-agent receiver Amani Toomer. While the Bears haven't ruled out pursuing a veteran receiver, Toomer might not be their target. According to a source, the Bears did not place the call to Toomer. The receiver's representation has, no doubt, called around the league measuring interest from different teams, including the Bears. The Bears might be intrigued, but they're not jumping at the opportunity. Torry Holt might have been a better fit, but Holt signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Orlando Pace told us the other day that he tried until the last minute to get Holt to Chicago. ``We were working on that for a ..."
Jacobs: "No" To Braylon
"No to trading for Braylon Edwards. So says Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. "I don't want him," Jacobs said yesterday on ESPN 1050 Radio. "There are great players in the league that I don't want. I just think the chemistry between the teammates that I have now is great. We don't need to add a new veteran to the whole group." Jacobs also said no to trading for Anquan Boldin."
Giants' Ware Vies For Ward's Carries
"The selection of Andre Brown out of North Carolina State in the fourth round of the NFL Draft certainly affects running back Danny Ware, who is entering his second year with the Giants determined to get on the field. He has Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw in front of him on the depth chart, but last year's No. 2 back, Derrick Ward, is gone, having signed with the Buccaneers in free agency. "We used a fourth-round pick to take a running back," Ware wrote recently in a blog post on his website. "Naturally, guys are going to worry about their jobs and some guys will be on edge. It doesn't put a scare into me because I know I go out there and work hard every day. But I heard he's pretty ..."
New York Giants nearly had deal worked out on draft day toWR Jeremy Maclin
"The Giants said they didn't trade up in the first round of this past weekend's draft because they didn't want to reach for a wide receiver. It turns out they were closer to reaching -- and to a different player -- than they let on. Before drafting North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks with their own pick at No. 29, the Giants had worked out the parameters of a trade with the Lions to move up to the 20th pick, according to someone briefed on the negotiations between the two teams. The person, who requested anonymity because the Giants don't discuss war-room talks publicly, didn't divulge what was being offered to Detroit but said the trade was contingent on Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin's ..."
Report: Lions nearly dealt 20th pick to Giants
"There was plenty of chatter around the NFL about a possible draft-day trade involving the Lions and the 20th pick in the first round. Now comes word that the Lions were poised to pull the trigger on a deal with the New York Giants. The Newark Star-Ledger reported Wednesday the Giants had worked out the parameters of a trade with Detroit to move up from No. 29 to No. 20 in an attempt to land receiver Jeremy Maclin. It's not clear what the compensation would have been, but that would-be trade was effectively scrapped when the Giants' NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, leapfrogged Detroit in a trade with Cleveland. The Eagles gave up a sixth-round pick to move up from No. 21 to No. ..."
Ex-Giant Discussed as Sanchez Arrives
"The Jets added a big gun in quarterback Mark Sanchez this weekend. Now they're looking a player with a big gun problem. Giants, Jets: Day-two picks Complete NFL draft selections Giants go after offense on Day 2 The team has talked to the agent for former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, though no signing is imminent. A source familiar with the discussions said the team "kicked the tires," but that's as far as it has gone. "Consistent with our normal approach of performing our due diligence, we contacted (agent) Drew Rosenhaus several days ago prior to the draft to inquire about Plaxico's pending legal situation," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. "However, we ..."
Giants Could Go For Braylon Or Draft WR
"One quickie before we delve into the Giants and the NFL Draft, which finally arrives this afternoon: Given the reinforcements signed to fortify an already-sturdy defense and the returning talent sprinkled throughout the roster, wouldn't the Giants be the favorites to get to Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida if they traded for Browns stud receiver Braylon Edwards? Just saying. Though the machinations of that deal/no deal with the Browns dominated the pre-draft analysis, those with knowledge of the situation say it has been close to much ado about nothing. We shall see. The Giants enter the draft -- despite general manager Jerry Reese's public sentiment to the contrary -- with one glaring ..."
Giant options: Get Braylon Edwards from Browns or draft a wide receiver
"It won't be Anquan Boldin, and it probably won't be Braylon Edwards, either. But at some point Saturday the Giants will take the final step toward replacing Plaxico Burress by adding the big-play receiver they so desperately need. Even though GM Jerry Reese insisted receiver is not a "glaring need," several team and league sources have insisted that the Giants know better, and are strongly focusing on grabbing a receiver in the first round of today's NFL draft. Their plan is to try to trade up a few spots for speedy Maryland wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey, according to two sources familiar with the team's thinking. Relying On Rookie WR Fraught With Peril

According to two sources familiar with the team's plans, the Giants are looking to trade up in the first round with the hopes of getting into position to draft Heyward-Bey. The 6-2, 210-pounder is one of the fastest receivers in the draft - he once ran a 4.23 in the 40-yard dash - and the Giants view him as the big-play, deep threat they so desperately need now that Plaxico Burress has been released. They are also optimistic they ..."
