Cowboys Trade Rumors

Cowboys deny interest in Pacman
"The Dallas Cowboys say there are no plans to bring back Adam "Pacman" Jones, the cornerback whose career has been marred by off-the-field problems. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones raised the possibility in a weekend interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Team spokesman Rich Dalrymple said Monday the owner had told him it wasn't going to happen."
Cowboys won't sign 'Pacman'
"On Saturday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones raised the possibility of re-signing cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones. Possibly in response to the negative reaction he got from considering the move, Jones said Monday that he has "no plans to bring Adam back." The Cowboys' owner never committed to bringing Adam Jones back to Dallas. But he admitted it was something he was thinking about. "Would you beat me up too bad if I brought Adam back?" Jones said to a reporter after the George Strait concert to open the new Cowboys stadium Saturday. Jones said nothing was imminent and acknowledged that he had reservations about the move because he didn't want to impede the progress of second-year ..."
Jerry Jones says Pacman Jones could return to Cowboys
"Apparently the door has not been completely closed on cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones' career with the Dallas Cowboys. A giddy Jerry Jones, reached in his private suite after the George Strait concert Saturday night to open the new Cowboys Stadium, asked a reporter, "Would you beat me up too bad if I brought back Adam?" The Cowboys' owner said he is considering the move even though it's a long shot. The Cowboys might be hesitant to bring back Pacman Jones because it could stunt the progress of second-year cornerbacks Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins. But Jerry Jones said he's not concerned about any off-the-field issues with Pacman Jones even though the cornerback was released by the ..."
Former Cowboys' coordinator Stewart working Eagles defense
"The Eagles are expected to announce within the next day or 2 that former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart has been added to the Birds' defensive staff.News of Stewart's hiring was broken Saturday on the blog of Dallas' WFAA-TV. A source close to the situation confirmed to the Daily News that the move was pending. Presumably, Stewart will help with the secondary, where Sean McDermott has been stretched thin, as he fills in for defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. Johnson has taken an indefinite leave of absence to fight metastasized melanoma.According to Dave Spadaro on the Eagles' Web site, Stewart has already gone to work, alongside assisant secondary coach Otis Smith, in the ..."
Ellis to miss Cowboys' OTAs
"The Dallas Cowboys are expected to resume their organized team activities today in Carrollton without outside linebacker Greg Ellis. Citing anonymous sources, several media outlets reported last week that the team told Ellis, 33, he wouldn't be allowed to participate in the remainder of the OTAs. According to those reports, the Cowboys are going to either trade or release Ellis, an 11-year veteran. The Cowboys have two more weeks of OTAs, with each week containing three sessions. The media has access to the players and coaches each Tuesday."
Greg Ellis is all but done with Dallas Cowboys
"Linebacker Greg Ellis' days in Dallas are numbered. The Cowboys will trade or release him soon. The Cowboys say they are still deciding what to do. But there is little chance they can bring him back into the locker room now that he is on the trading block. An often unhappy camper in the past, what will Ellis do this summer? After an off-season in which the Cowboys have gotten rid of every negative force — Terrell Owens, Tank Johnson and Adam "Pacman" Jones — they have no choice but to get rid of Ellis. It most likely will be a release. Although the Cowboys are shopping him in a trade, his contract makes it kind of difficult. Ellis is in the final year of his contract. He is due a $4.15 ..."
Dallas Cowboys not interested in Vick
"In an off-season that has seen the Cowboys say goodbye to Terrell Owens, Adam Jones and Tank Johnson, they will not be saying hello to Michael Vick. "Romo's our guy," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said of Tony Romo while at Cowboys Stadium for the unveiling of the center-hung scoreboard. Vick was released from federal prison Wednesday after spending 19 months behind bars for financing a dogfighting operation. Vick will spend two months in home confinement before his release on July 20. He could face added punishment from the NFL, but for now he remains under contract with Atlanta. Falcons owner Arthur Blank has said Vick will not play for his team again. Coach Wade Phillips was ..."
Dallas Cowboys mull trading or releasing Greg Ellis
"Greg Ellis' future with the Cowboys is in doubt. Ellis did not take part in Thursday's organized team activity workout at Standridge Stadium as the Cowboys consider the possibility of trading or releasing the veteran linebacker, according to multiple sources. The Cowboys would free up more than $5 million in salary cap room in 2009 with a trade. If they cut Ellis, they would save $4.15 million because he has a $1.5 million guarantee that was added to his contract in 2007. "He's looking forward to being a Dallas Cowboy," Ellis' agent, James Williams, said. "Now, if that's going to happen, we don't know. That's not in our control." Williams said he has not asked for or been told by the ..."
Is IR system in line for a change?
"When the NFL adopted its system for placing players on season-ending injured reserve, the main issue was stashing. Teams had long been allowed to place players on injured reserve and bring them back later in the season. But some felt that clubs were circumventing the rule by placing players who weren't truly injured on IR, opening a roster spot for someone else. Thus, a competitive advantage was scored. Colts president Bill Polian remembers high-profile coaches and personnel executives, such as Don Shula and Jim Finks, pushing for a change to combat stashing, and it finally came in 1993, when the league made two significant adjustments. At that time, players placed on injured reserve would ..."
Could Chris McAlister be a fit with the Cowboys?
"In a column about six unemployed big-name vets, blog buddy Albert "Einstein" Breer of the Sporting News calls the Cowboys an ideal fit for former Ravens CB Chris McAlister. Here's what he writes: The situation: McAlister, 31, is rehabbing from arthroscopic knee surgery in Los Angeles and is expected to be cleared for all football activities by late June. He'd like to stay near his native California. The Seahawks and Chargers have shown interest, as have the Cowboys, who intrigue McAlister very much. Scout's take: "He's got a lot of tread on the tire. Watching him last year, he's without question a big injury risk. Athletically, while he still has the instincts, the drop-off in long speed ..."
Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware doesn't sell himself short
"Standing in a sleek, all-black football uniform and sneering for the cameras, Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware manages to belie his natural soft personality to look every bit the menacing defender that he is on Sundays. But once the cameras quit popping, Ware's real personality comes through. This is a happy man, even though he has yet to sign the contract extension he desperately desires to be completed sooner rather than later. "I think they are getting closer. I'm not frustrated," Ware said Wednesday in the middle of a photo shoot for Venom Energy sports drink, a product he endorses. "At the end of the day, I'm a Ferrari and I appreciate. I'll leave it at that." Such Deion ..."
Carpenter signs with Cowboys; Jones to Texans
"Rudy Carpenter has signed a free-agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted over the weekend. The Steelers and Jaguars had also inquired about the former Arizona State quarterback. "Throughout the whole process, (Dallas) showed the most interest in me," Carpenter said. "I feel like that is the best chance I have at making a team." Jon Kitna was acquired in February to serve as Tony Romo's backup. Texas A"
Cowboys plan to pass on receivers
"The sights and sounds of construction are everywhere at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. While the $1.1 billion building looks nearly complete from the outside, it's clear inside there's still a long way to go before its inaugural event - George Strait's June 6 concert. Meanwhile, there are aspects of the franchise that apparently don't need much work. Speaking at a news conference inside the dust-filled stadium, owner Jerry Jones told hard hat-wearing reporters Thursday that wide receiver won't be a priority in the NFL draft this weekend. Nearly two months after releasing Terrell Owens, Jones said he's confident former Texas star Roy Williams will do just fine as the centerpiece wideout. ..."
Cowboys could parlay running-back depth into draft-day deal
"Six seasons after the departure of Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys have an embarrassment of riches at the running back position. They don't have a rushing champ, but they have three very capable runners - so much so that they could possibly field calls for trade offers on draft day. There is certainly nothing wrong with listening if you can parlay a former fourth-round pick (Tashard Choice) into possibly a third- or even a second-rounder. Who they have: Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, Alonzo Coleman and Deon Anderson. Production: After making the Pro Bowl in 2007, Barber was slowed last season because of injuries. However, there is no questioning his toughness or the energy he ..."
Dallas Cowboys don't seem caught up in receiver talk
"With so many rumors swirling about elite or near-elite wide receivers possibly on the move, where are the Cowboys in these discussions? New York newspapers and Giants Web sites are filled with stories about the likelihood of Cleveland trading unhappy wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the defending NFC East champs. Other than the fact he drops more balls than Terrell Owens, Edwards' big play skills would seem to be the perfect replacement for former Giant Plaxico Burress. In Philadelphia, there is more than a little talk of the Eagles luring Anquan Boldin from Arizona. The Cardinals have been unable to alter his contract to make him happy, and coach Ken Whisenhunt said last week the team ..."
Cowboys' Hurd, Austin staying
"With restricted free agency expiring Friday, Dallas Cowboys wide receivers Miles Austin and Brackenridge graduate Sam Hurd are expected to sign their one-year tenders for $1.54 million soon. Austin had a brief flirtation with the New York Jets before they decided giving the Cowboys a second-round pick as compensation for signing him was too high a price."
Reports: Jets won't make offer to Dallas Cowboys' Austin
"With the restricted free agency signing period ending Friday, the New York Jets will not make an offer to wide receiver Miles Austin, according to published reports. Austin visited the Jets last week and left without a contract. The Cowboys probably would have matched an offer to Austin instead of taking New York's second-round draft pick (No. 52 overall). Austin has been at Valley Ranch this week working out with teammates. He has until Friday to sign the Cowboys' $1.545 million tender or the team can reduce the offer."
Jets don't offer for Austin, yet
"Dallas wide receiver Miles Austin visited with the Jets on Friday as expected, but the restricted free agent did not receive an offer sheet, according to an NFL source. That doesn't mean he won't receive one from the club. NFL teams have until next Friday to do so, meaning the Jets can use that time to try to formulate a plan for an offer sheet that would be creative monetarily and perhaps difficult for the Cowboys to match without upsetting their salary-cap situation. Austin, a former Garfield High School standout, was tendered at $1.545 million by the Cowboys, which means the Jets would have to give up a second-round pick in this month's draft as compensation if they signed him to an ..."
Dallas Cowboys' Austin visits Jets; no tender offer yet
"Cowboys restricted free agent wide receiver Miles Austin visited the New York Jets on Friday. The Jets didn't tender an offer sheet on Friday, but have until April 17 to do so. Should the Jets submit a contract to Austin, the Cowboys have one week to match the deal or receive a second-round draft pick from the Jets. The Cowboys currently have 11 draft picks. "This is where I started," Austin said of Dallas on Thursday before visiting the Jets. "There's a connection to Dallas obviously. You also want to be somewhere they want you, and I think [the Cowboys] do.""
Jets may try to grab Cowboys' wide receiver Miles Austin
"The Jets may look to the Cowboys instead of the draft to replace Laveranues Coles. According to team sources, the Jets will entertain Dallas restricted free agent Miles Austin Thursday and Friday. If the Jets want Austin, it will cost them a second-round pick since the Cowboys gave the 6-3 wide receiver a $1.545 million tender offer. Should the Jets sign Austin, the Cowboys will have a week to match or take the Jets' No. 52 overall pick. The restricted free-agent signing period runs through April 17."
Jets interested in Miles Austin
"According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are counting on wide receiver Miles Austin being a major player in their offense in 2009, but the Jets might have something to say about that. According to sources, the Jets have scheduled to meet with Austin, a restricted free agent, Thursday and Friday."
Dallas Cowboys' Carpenter has been shopped
"The Cowboys have looked into the possibility of trading linebacker Bobby Carpenter, according to sources, but might be more reluctant to move the former first-round pick with Kevin Burnett's departure. Burnett signed a two-year deal with San Diego earlier this month, leaving Carpenter as the top backup on the roster and a leading candidate to take over Burnett's role in the substitute defensive packages. The 18th overall pick in 2006, Carpenter has been credited with just seven tackles in the last two seasons, spending most of his time at special teams, where he has made 30 tackles in the last two seasons. Carpenter is scheduled to earn an $885,000 base salary this season. He has yet to ..."
Fill WR spot? Dallas Cowboys may pass
"Sometimes it's best to keep things as they are. That's what the Cowboys seem to be doing at wide receiver. When the team released Terrell Owens, some speculated the Cowboys would draft a wide receiver or sign one in free agency to complement Roy Williams. But Jerry Jones said that wasn't necessarily going to happen. And that could be a good thing. There are two potential Hall of Fame receivers available in free agency, but each is past his prime. Marvin Harrison, who turns 37 in August, finished fourth on the Colts with 636 receiving yards last season. Torry Holt turns 33 in June, and while he led the Rams with 796 yards, he had a career-low three touchdowns. There is also a younger ..."
Bengals pleased with ex-Dallas Cowboys safety Williams' workout
"Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said he was pleased with former Cowboys safety Roy Williams' workout in Cincinnati on Thursday. Williams' agent, Jordan Woy, said he plans to continue contract talks with the Bengals, and Williams plans to meet with other teams. "It was a good workout," Zimmer, a former Cowboys defensive coordinator, told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I wanted to evaluate him from when I remembered him. He's still got some quickness.""
Ex-Dallas Cowboys safety Williams visiting Cincinnati
"Roy Williams is in Cincinnati, visiting with the Bengals, where he could be reunited with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. According to Williams' agent, Jordan Woy, Williams has already turned down one offer and he has two more potential visits."
Romo for Cutler? For Dallas Cowboys, not a chance
"Jay Cutler wants out of Denver and has asked the Broncos to trade him. Many of you seem to think swapping Tony Romo for Cutler is a great idea. It's not. Actually, it's a horrible idea. Consider this: What has Jay Cutler ever done? Nothing. He has a great arm, but he's never led the Broncos to the playoffs. Don't forget, they choked away a three-game lead with three games to play last season, and he throws dumb interceptions with regularity because of his unwavering faith in his powerful right arm. Yes, Romo can be frustrating with his gun-slinger mentality and the turnovers it produces. And you wish he'd be more of a leader since, ultimately, that's the quarterback's job. And despite ..."
It's time to ask the question . . . What if Cutler walks?
"Happy trails, Jay Cutler. Have a nice life. Here are three quarterbacks who could make the Broncos a better football team when you're gone: 1) Matthew Stafford, Georgia Bulldogs 2) Brady Quinn, Cleveland Browns 3) Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys Let's make a deal. Enough already with the chest- beating, turf-marking and belly- aching in Broncosland. Tell Cutler to turn in his Denver uniform. As soon as Broncos owner Pat Bowlen stops pulling out his hair, coach Josh McDaniels ceases running around with his diapers on fire and we talk chief operating officer Joe Ellis down from the ledge of those empty luxury boxes in the stadium, maybe this team can get on with the real business at hand. The ..."
Cowboys to add safety Gerald Sensabaugh
"The Cowboys took a step toward filling a hole in their secondary by agreeing to terms with safety Gerald Sensabaugh on a one-year deal Tuesday. Sensabaugh, 25, started a career-high 13 games last season in Jacksonville and was credited with 82 tackles to go with four interceptions and four pass deflections. A fifth-round pick in 2005 by the Jaguars, Sensabaugh played in 50 games with 24 starts and had 168 tackles and six interceptions. He has played mostly strong safety but started three games last season at free safety. Sensabaugh, 6-0, 204 pounds, played for secondary coach Dave Campo and special teams coach Joe DeCamillis in Jacksonville."
Owens' exit creates chance for Dallas Cowboys' Austin
"Miles Austin was among a number of players who received a text message from Terrell Owens late Wednesday saying that Owens was no longer a member of the Cowboys. Like many of his teammates, Austin said he was surprised by the move. Suddenly, he finds himself in position, along with Patrick Crayton, to compete for the starting wide receiver spot opposite Roy Williams. "Obviously, it's an opportunity, and I'm excited for the challenge," Austin said. "It gives me a shot now to get more time and also show the coaches what I can do. But when it's all said and done, you still have to perform when they call on you." Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Thursday on NFL Network that ..."
Dallas Cowboys safety Williams has suitors
"Several teams are interested in former Cowboys safety Roy Williams, who has turned down one offer from an unnamed team, according to his agent, Jordan Woy. Williams, who was released last week by the Cowboys, expressed a desire to play in a 4-3 scheme that uses his ability to play close to the line of scrimmage. Free agent linebacker Kevin Burnett is still in talks with several teams and hopes to get a deal done by Tuesday. Oakland and San Diego have exchanged contract numbers with Burnett, according to his agent, Ricky Lefft."
Bills to sign Owens to one-year deal
"The Buffalo Bills have scheduled a 6:15 p.m. news conference at One Bills Drive. A source has told The News' Mark Gaughan that the team will sign free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens to a one-year deal, worth $6.5 million guaranteed. Owens, who was released earlier this week by the Dallas Cowboys, has 951 career receptions for 14,122 yards and 139 touchdowns. He has had nine 1,000-yard receiving seasons during his 13-year NFL career."
Troubled wide receiver Terrell Owens out in Dallas, can forget Giants, Jets
"With Plaxico Burress in legal trouble, and with Laveranues Coles now in Cincinnati, New York's teams could be in the market for a No.1 wide receiver. But that doesn't mean the Terrell Owens circus is coming to town. The Giants and Jets are in agreement: N-O on T.O. Neither team is interested in the just-released Cowboys receiver, according to people familiar with each team's thinking. That's hardly surprising. The Giants have seen the talented, but toxic Owens over the last few years in the NFC East, causing disruptions in Dallas and Philadelphia. As much as they need a playmaking receiver - Burress' status could hinge on a March 31 court date in which he will answer charges of carrying ..."
T.O.'s exit leaves Dallas Cowboys with questions at WR
"With the Dallas Cowboys sending Terrell Owens on his way Wednesday night, this is what's left of the wide receiver group: An established wideout in Roy Williams, a veteran who proved he can be a No. 2 in Patrick Crayton and a bunch of young, yet talented, unproven players. When the Cowboys had Owens and Williams in the lineup last season, it didn't prove to be successful. Williams finished the season with just 19 catches and one touchdown since the trade with the Lions. Owens did get 1,052 yards, but he didn't have enough dominating games like he did in 2007. So where does this leave the Cowboys? Williams has to develop a relationship with quarterback Tony Romo on the field for ..."
Burnett close to being a Charger?
"Got a text from Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett about midnight last night and he said he is real close to being a San Diego Charger. Burnett is hopeful that everything will be finalized Wednesday. If so, he will be the second unrestricted free agent to leave the Cowboys for more money and potentially greener pastures in the past four days. Defensive end Chris Canty signed a six-year, $42 million contract with the Giants on Sunday. Burnett's departure will be no surprise either. His financial demands were too rich for the Cowboys and his on field goals didn't line up with Coach Wade Phillips. He wants an opportunity to start, while the Cowboys see him as more of a nickel linebacker and ..."
Dallas Cowboys' Ware finds himself in good spot for contract extension
"Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware was all about business Monday. Standing in the parking lot surveying a brand new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Ware was giving the car one final look-over. It was an anniversary gift for his wife, Taniqua. He also had a dozen long-stem roses in the front seat. "It's our anniversary," Ware said with a smile. "I have to keep momma happy." A car that retails for roughly $170,000 should do the trick. But just in case, the repercussions from the events of last weekend should help keep momma happy for years to come. The only person happier than Ware over the seven-year, $100 million contact defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth signed with the Washington Redskins ..."
Deadline passes with safety Williams still a Cowboy
"Safety Roy Williams remained a member of the Cowboys on Tuesday. Through his agent, Jordan Woy, Williams had requested the Cowboys either trade or release him by Tuesday so he could find a new home before job opportunities and available cash dwindles. But for the Cowboys, who are in decent salary-cap shape, there is no need to rush making a move on Williams. Trade discussions for Williams are difficult because teams believe the Cowboys will eventually release the five-time Pro Bowler and save close to $2 million against the salary cap."
In line to be left out in the cold
"One of the reasons the Green Bay Packers are $30 million under the salary cap is that they refuse to set the market in free agency and prefer to let the market establish itself. It means that sometimes the object of the Packers' desire is at the bank cashing a check from somebody else before they even have their checkbook out of their pocket. But that strategy has kept them from overpaying players. The Packers very well could be left in the dust again this year with their own free agent, Colin Cole, and someone else's, Dallas' Chris Canty. Both free agents appear to have at least two suitors with as much or more interest than Green Bay, and it will be up to the Packers to decide whether ..."
Brooking signs with Cowboys
"Former Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking has signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys, according to his agent Pat Dye Jr. Dye did not disclose terms of the contract. Brooking, the last member of the 1998 Falcons Super Bowl team, will be reunited with Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, who was the Falcons’ defensive coordinator in 2002-03 and the team’s interim coach for the final three games of the ‘03 season. “That played a big part in the decision,” Dye said of the chance for Brooking to be reunited with Phillips. Brooking became a free agent at 12:01 a.m. Friday, but Dye said he had discussions with the Falcons through Saturday before Brooking chose the Cowboys’ offer. Falcons owner Arthur ..."
Lions trade Jon Kitna to Cowboys
"The Lions have traded quarterback Jon Kitna to Dallas for late-round draft picks, according to nationalfootballpost.com. Team spokesman Bill Keenist confirmed the Lions traded Kitna to Dallas but did not say what they received in the deal. Kitna was not expected to return. He is due a $1 million roster bonus March 3. Asked last week if the Lions were trying to trade Kitna, general manager Martin Mayhew said: “We look at options for trade for a lot of players, for all of our players, really. If something kind of came up where we had an opportunity to trade Jon and there was value for us, we would certainly look into that.”"
Redskins pass on Canty; Dallas Cowboys probably out
"free agent defensive end Chris Canty was all set to become a member of the Washington Redskins on Friday, so much so that he even had a plane ride set up to take him from Charlotte, N.C., to Washington for a proper introduction. But in the early hours on Friday morning, the first day of free agency, Canty and his agent were told not to bother coming. The Redskins' decision to sign free agent defensive end Albert Haynesworth to a seven-year, $100 million contract ended Canty's chances of signing with the Cowboys' rival. But it reinforced the notion that Canty will not be re-signing with the Cowboys during this free agency period. Haynesworth's deal is likely to drive up the asking price of ..."
Springs to Be Released Today
"The Redskins have informed veteran cornerback Shawn Springs that he will be released from the final year of his contract, according to Springs. A free-agent signing in 2004 and a Silver Spring native, Springs will become an unrestricted free agent. "They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said in a telephone conversation. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport." The Redskins will save $6 million in cap space by letting him go and Springs could draw interest from New England, Dallas and Baltimore, among other teams. The Redskins are still trying to sign their former guard Derrick ..."
Ravens lose Scott to Jets; Lewis gone, too?
"As if it weren’t bad enough to lose linebacker Bart Scott, now the Ravens are in serious jeopardy of losing free-agent linebacker Ray Lewis, too. The Jets are expected to sign Scott to a contract worth about $8 million per year that could land in the range of $40 million total. He traveled to visit with the Jets this morning. The Jets also are hosting a visit for Baltimore free-agent CB Corey Ivy. He could be yet another former player of Ryan’s in New York that comes in, helps the Jets learn the new defensive system and contribute on the field as well. Meanwhile, sources close to Lewis were adamant Friday that one of the game’s greatest defensive players will not return to Baltimore and ..."
Cowboys cut Brad Johnson
"The Dallas Cowboys released backup quarterback Brad Johnson, as expected, Thursday and could soon be parting ways with five-time Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams. The team has shopped Williams across the NFL and his agent, Jordan Woy, said Williams knows that the end is near for him in Dallas. If the Cowboys don’t get what they want in a trade, Williams could be released, possibly as soon as today to kick off what could be an intriguing if not flashy free-agency period. "If they trade him, they trade him," Woy said. "If they release him they release him. We are ready to hit the ground running. Right now they have put a lot of feelers out there. We will know more [today]." Williams' departure ..."
Dallas Cowboys safety Williams could be traded
"Strong safety Roy Williams is preparing for his playing days in Dallas to come to an end. The Cowboys, according to multiple sources, have shopped Williams for a possible trade. Jordan Woy, Williams' agent, said he was not given permission to seek a trade but would like to see something done quickly. Should the Cowboys cut Williams, they would create $2.18 million in salary cap space. If Williams remains with the team, which is doubtful, he would earn a $4.4 million base salary for the 2009 season. Williams played in only three games in 2008 because of a twice-fractured forearm. Over the last few years, he has not performed like an impact player. In his first three seasons - 2002 to '04 ..."
Safety Williams' days with Dallas Cowboys may be numbered
"Roy Williams has played his last game for the Cowboys. It's the only conclusion we can draw since the Cowboys' front office has been calling around the league to determine the veteran safety's trade value. And if Dallas doesn't find a trade partner - just so you know, teams don't trade for players destined to be released - then it's only a matter of when, not if, the Cowboys release the five-time Pro Bowl player. When that happens, it should leave you feeling just a little empty because the former first-round pick from Oklahoma arrived with such expectations. For three seasons, he delivered. He intercepted passes. He delivered bone-breaking hits. He sacked quarterbacks. He made ..."
Source: Cowboys trying to trade S Roy Williams
"There may soon be only one Roy Williams on the Dallas Cowboys roster. The Cowboys have contacted NFL teams trying to trade Williams, a five-time Pro Bowl safety in his seven seasons in Dallas, FOXSports.com has learned. If a deal can't be reached, Williams could be released to clear room for the Cowboys under the salary cap. Williams played in only three games last season because of forearm injuries. Although regarded as a strong tackler, Williams has struggled in coverage and is no longer considered a good fit for Dallas' 3-4 scheme under head coach Wade Phillips."
Eight Cowboys to test market
"The Dallas Cowboys will let all eight of their unrestricted free agents test the open market, owner Jerry Jones announced Monday via the team's Web site. Free agency begins Friday. The Cowboys have eight unrestricted free agents: Defensive end Chris Canty, safety Keith Davis, quarterback Brooks Bollinger, guard Joe Berger, defensive tackle Tank Johnson and linebackers Keith Burnett, Zach Thomas and Carlos Polk. The Cowboys have roughly $12 million in cap space and hope to sign linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a long-term deal. Jones has said repeatedly the team won't be big players in free agency."
Ware: Lewis says 'dream' is to play in Dallas
"From owner Steve Bisciotti to coach John Harbaugh, the Ravens have made it clear they want to bring back Ray Lewis. But the Pro Bowl inside linebacker could be laying the groundwork to go elsewhere when free agency begins Friday. According to Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware, Lewis said it's his "dream" to play in Dallas and repeatedly expressed his desire to sign there. "When we played Ray Lewis and Baltimore at the end of the season, he came over and pointed to my helmet. He said: 'I want to wear this star on my helmet. That's my dream ... that's my dream,'" Ware told the Cowboys' official Web site. "When we got to the Pro Bowl, he did it again. He came at me every day. He's trying to ..."
Jones breaks silence; DeMarcus Ware extension would have a cost
"The Dallas Cowboys are expected to make linebacker DeMarcus Ware the richest player in the history of the franchise. It's only a matter of when. Because the Cowboys plan on re-signing Ware to a large extension this off-season, their salary cap space for 2009 will be mostly gone once the deal is done. So any ideas of signing potential free agent linebacker Ray Lewis, and possibly keeping defensive end Chris Canty and linebacker Kevin Burnett from leaving in free agency, are likely on the shelf. Canty's agent, Brad Blank, said he talked briefly with the Cowboys on Saturday and has a meeting scheduled with team vice president Stephen Jones today. "We'd like to remain in Dallas, but I don't ..."
