Brian Daboll to be Chiefs offensive coordinator, ESPN report says
February 4
Kansas City Star
"
Brian Daboll will be the Chiefs' new offensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report late Friday night. Chiefs quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn and former Raiders offensive coordinator Al Saunders were also known to have interviewed for the position. Daboll was replaced as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator after Miami finished 20th in points and 22nd in yards last year. The Dolphins were much better in the second half of the season, and beat the Chiefs 31-3 for their first win in week nine.

Chiefs narrow coordinator search, want QB competition
February 3
Kansas City Star
"
The resume box is still wide open at Arrowhead Stadium. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli are looking to plug holes on their coaching and scouting staffs and emphasized Thursday the need to bring in competition for Matt Cassel at starting quarterback. Crennel has interviewed quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn and Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Al Saunders for the vacant offensive coordinator's job and said, "I might interview another one or two" before making a decision, perhaps early next week. The new offensive coordinator also would have some say in the selection of a veteran quarterback — or quarterback taken in the draft — because Crennel and Pioli were

Haley meets with Tomlin for Steelers' O.C. position
February 1
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"
Former Kansas City Chiefs Coach Todd Haley, an Upper St. Clair native, visited the Steelers offices today and interviewed with Coach Mike Tomlin about becoming the Steelers offensive coordinator. The Steelers official website first reported that Haley was interviewed for the job, but the Post-Gazette has also confirmed the visit.

Crennel still exploring options for assistant coaches
January 28
Kansas City Star
"
Some of the NFL teams that made head coaching hires in the past couple of weeks have already filled their staffs with assistants. The Chiefs, who hired Romeo Crennel on Jan. 9, are still looking for some offensive coaches, including a coordinator. Crennel said Friday he may not have his staff set until after the Feb. 5 Super Bowl. "It could be a week, it could be two weeks," Crennel said. "We're still trying to work through all of that. We're going to investigate all avenues. In the next couple of weeks, we should know the direction we're going." Former Cleveland and Miami offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has been the subject of speculation as a top candidate to join the Chiefs. The

Chiefs poised to make Crennel their next head coach
January 8
Kansas City Star
"
From the moment the Chiefs fired Todd Haley, Romeo Crennel appeared destined to become their next head coach. His first move as interim coach was a forceful one, benching struggling quarterback Tyler Palko in favor of Kyle Orton, and that one little switch pulled any and all momentum squarely behind Crennel. By the time his first week was finished, the Chiefs had beaten the previously undefeated Packers and Crennel had a locker room full of players on his side. Perhaps general manager Scott Pioli as well. The Chiefs interviewed other candidates seemingly only to verify their initial thought — that the 64-year-old Crennel was the right man for the job.

Chiefs nearing decision on making Romeo Crennel their next head coach
January 7
Kansas City Star
"
After a week of research and interviews, the Chiefs seem to be a step closer to elevating Romeo Crennel to permanent head coach. ESPN reported Saturday that the Chiefs expect to retain Crennel, who went 2-1 as interim coach, in the permanent role next season. Crennel was the favorite, and it appeared after the Chiefs’ victory last Sunday against Denver, that general manager Scott Pioli had made up his mind. Crennel was the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator before stepping into the interim head-coaching role after Todd Haley was fired in early December. Crennel said repeatedly that he was interested in the full-time job. His chances soared after a home victory against the previously unbeaten

Del Rio joins Chiefs' list
January 7

"
After the Chiefs interviewed Jack Del Rio, the field of known candidates to become their next head coach expanded to three. It also became evident a couple of the presumed favorites when Todd Haley was fired last month aren't on that list. •Former Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher indicated he would soon choose between offers from Miami and St. Louis. •The Chiefs have yet to request permission to speak with St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. He could be headed back to New England as an assistant coach. Del Rio's name surfaced earlier in the week as someone the Chiefs might like to speak with. Unlike Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who interviewed earlier in the

Report: Pats approach Rams about McDaniels
January 6
CSN New England
"
Meet the new offensive coordinator, same as the old offensive coordinator? Maybe. Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch quotes a "well-placed league source" in reporting the Patriots are one of two teams -- Scott Pioli's Chiefs, to no one's surprise, is the other -- to approach the Rams about permission to speak to Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was the Pats' offensive coordinator from 2006-08 (though it's assumed he was also the de-facto O.C. in 2005, the year after Charlie Weis left the post) before taking over as head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009. He was fired by the Broncos late in the 2010 season and spent this past year as offensive coordinator for the Rams.

Chiefs reportedly interview the Packers' Joe Philbin
January 5
Kansas City Star
"
Perhaps interim head coach Romeo Crennel isn't such a slam dunk for the Chiefs' permanent job after all. Multiple reports on Wednesday had Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin interviewing in Kansas City on Wednesday night for the Chiefs' head coaching position. Philbin, 50, boasts some impressive credentials. The Packers have been in the top 10 in both scoring and yardage in each of his five seasons as their coordinator. Time, though, is not on Philbin's side. According to the NFL's anti-tampering rules, the Chiefs cannot hire Philbin or any other coach who is working for another team until that team's season is finished.

Crennel wants Chiefs' head-coaching job but won't push for it
January 2
Kansas City Star
"
Romeo Crennel isn't the politicking type. He doesn't grandstand or make lofty promises. But there was a hint Sunday evening that a message was being sent to the men who will decide Crennel's future — as well as that of the Chiefs."What, I'm 2-1 in the three games we've played?" Crennel said after Sunday's 7-3 win over the Denver Broncos. "From a percentage standpoint, that's not terrible."That's as brash as it gets for Crennel, the 64-year-old interim head coach. He reiterated Sunday that he still wants the job permanently, though he didn't make a grand verbal push for it. Instead, the best evidence came in wins against Green Bay and Denver, and a locker room full of players who want

Orton's future unclear after Chiefs beat Broncos

Kyle Orton was something less than definitive about his future with the Chiefs after their season ended with Sunday's 7-3 win over the Broncos. But he sounded like a guy who has played his last game with the Chiefs. "It was a long year for me," said Orton, a veteran quarterback who began the season as Denver's starter, was benched and eventually released and then claimed by the Chiefs after they lost Matt Cassel for the season because of a hand injury. "I thank the Chiefs for giving me an opportunity to get a fresh start. I really enjoyed playing with those guys in the locker room. I think they've got a solid group of character guys. I appreciate them letting me come in and be a part of

"
Kicker Ryan Succop signed a five-year contract extension with the Chiefs that could pay him as much as $14.1 million.Until last week's game against the Raiders, when he had two field-goal attempts blocked in an overtime loss, Succop was having the best season of his three-year NFL career. He has made 24 of 29 field-goal attempts and at one point tied a club record by making 22 straight. Succop made 25 of 29 attempts as a rookie in 2009.His new contract is for slightly less than two of the league's top kickers who signed contracts earlier this year. In January, Baltimore's Billy Cundiff signed for five years and $15 million. In July, Green Bay's Mason Crosby signed for five years and $14.74

The mania began again last Monday, at least officially. The whispers had already been circling. By the time Todd Haley was fired last week as the Chiefs' coach, social-networking sites already had been buzzing with the team's next set of dream candidates. Fans posted to their Twitter pages that former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher or former Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden should be the only logical choices to lead the Chiefs. Hours after Haley's firing was announced, a Facebook page went live in hopes of luring Cowher to Kansas City. "Everybody thinks that Gruden and Cowher have got all the answers," said Kevin Harlan, a Kansas City-based sports broadcaster who calls NFL games for CBS. "They're

Chiefs buzz surrounds McDaniels, but with reservations

His name has been hot, and it has been mud. In Kansas City these days, it is at least part of the buzz on who might replace Todd Haley as Chiefs coach. Josh McDaniels is high on the list, the polarizing former Denver Broncos head coach who's now offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. The gambling website Bovada lists McDaniels as the second-best bet, behind only interim coach Romeo Crennel, with the odds listed Thursday at 5-to-2 that McDaniels will lead the Chiefs in 2012. In some ways, it makes sense. He worked with Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli when both were with the New England Patriots, and McDaniels was the Patriots' coordinator when quarterback Matt Cassel was forced

Orton or Stanzi will start Sunday for Chiefs
December 15
Kansas City Star
"
Romeo Crennel wasted little time making the Chiefs his team by benching quarterback Tyler Palko for Sunday's game against Green Bay at Arrowhead Stadium. Crennel said Wednesday that veteran Kyle Orton would start against the Packers if his injured finger is healed in time. If not, rookie Ricky Stanzi, a fifth-round selection out of Iowa who hasn't yet played this season, would get the call. "If Orton is able to go, then Orton is the quarterback," Crennel said at his daily news conference. "We'll have to see how his finger is and how he comes along and whether we can count on him with that finger." Without being asked, Crennel said the decision to bench Palko was his and not that of general

Chiefs fire head coach Todd Haley
December 12
Kansas City Star
"
The Chiefs have fired head coach Todd Haley, the team announced today. The move comes a day after an ugly 37-10 loss to the New York Jets — the team's fifth loss in six games. The announcement from the team: "This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs," Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. "Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd's contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future."

Chiefs' biggest question concerns Haley's future
December 4
Kansas City Star
columnist Sam Mellinger
"
There is precious little of immediate consequence still to come from this Chiefs season. This is one of the league's worst rosters, playing with wounded self-esteem against some of the NFL's best teams. The Chiefs need to make evaluations about who and what will be back for 2012, and that's important in a vague and forward-thinking way, but for now the biggest question around (and inside) the team is the future of coach Todd Haley and why he is apparently unaware that Tyler Palko is an awful NFL quarterback. This is one of the more secretive franchises in professional sports, and even private conversations often come with hidden agendas, so in this case it's important to keep in mind that

Palko, Orton split practice time at QB for Chiefs
December 1
Kansas City Star
"
The Chiefs stuck by Todd Haley's quarterback plan at practice Wednesday. Tyler Palko was first in line during position drills, and the Chiefs said he took about 60 percent of the starter's snaps, with the rest going to Kyle Orton. Haley again indicated Palko would start Sunday's game against the Bears in Chicago. But Haley also said that he won't hesitate to change quarterbacks during the game if events warrant and he believes the recently acquired Orton is ready to play. "We've got to get ready to win a big game," Haley said. "We'll do it by whatever means possible. If it takes playing three quarterbacks and going wildcat 20 plays, we've got to do that."

Bears may face ex-teammate Orton on Sunday
November 29
Chicago Tribune
"
The Chiefs will work to get Kyle Orton up to speed to start in Sunday's game at Soldier Field a little more than a week after they claimed him off waivers before the Bears could. Tyler Palko replaced Matt Cassel when he was lost for the season with a broken hand, and he committed four turnovers in a 13-9 loss to the Steelers on Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium. "We'll always play who gives us the best chance to win," said Chiefs coach Todd Haley, who was the Bears' wide receivers coach from 2001 to 2003.

Chiefs nab QB Kyle Orton off waivers
November 24
Kansas City Star
"
The Tyler Palko era, which got its start only last week, is nearing its end. The Chiefs brought in some competition for Palko on Wednesday when they claimed Kyle Orton, a veteran quarterback with extensive starting experience, off waivers from Denver. Orton, 29, began the season as Denver's starter but was benched last month in favor of Tim Tebow. The Broncos released Orton on Tuesday. Orton will report to the Chiefs and will be at practice today if he is able to get to Kansas City on time and pass his physical.

Chiefs claim QB Kyle Orton
November 23
Kansas City Star
"
The Chiefs have reportedly been awarded former Denver quarterback Kyle Orton on a waiver claim, a day after the Broncos released the veteran. Orton, 29, could join the team this week, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready to participate in Sunday night's nationally televised contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback hasn't played since Week 5, when he was benched by Broncos coach John Fox, who opted to start Tim Tebow.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel officially done for the season
November 22
Kansas City Star
"
The Chiefs officially ended the season for quarterback Matt Cassel before Monday night's game against the Patriots when they placed him on the injured-reserve list. Cassel injured his passing hand late in last week's loss to Denver. He subsequently had surgery, and Chiefs players were told last week that Cassel would not return again this season. Coach Todd Haley said after the Chiefs' 34-3 defeat that it was unlikely Cassel would have been able to return before the end of the season. "It's the right hand of a right-handed quarterback," Haley said. "It was going to take some time (to heal). We put a lot of thought into it as an organization with our doctors. We just made the decision we

Chiefs' Thomas Jones has best performance of season
November 22
Kansas City Star
"
The old man showed Monday that, as the doubts grew that his career was finished, there might be life yet left in those legs. Chiefs running back Thomas Jones, slowed this season presumably by his age, had his best game of the season in the Chiefs' 34-3 loss to the New England Patriots. He rushed for 48 yards in eight carries, and it was the season-long 26-yarder that stirred memories of the powerful, shifty runner of the past. As always, Jones' mood was determined by the game's outcome. "We didn't win the game," he said, "and that's what we came up here to do. I can't feel good about a good run or a couple good plays, if we didn't win the game. It doesn't make sense."

Cheifs' Mall Cassel's surgery goes well
November 17
Kansas City Star
"
Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel underwent surgery on his right hand late Monday. Coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that the procedure had gone "really well," and he held out hope that Cassel might return this season. Cassel suffered an injury to his throwing hand late in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Denver Broncos. "We're just giving as much time as we can to see where he is, and as we make decisions, we're going to let you know," Haley said. "But we have not done anything with Matt yet, as far as his status."

Cassel's injury more serious, could end his season
November 14
Kansas City Star
"
Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel's right hand injury, suffered late in Sunday's loss to Denver, is far more serious than initially thought and could end his season. Haley said the injury is "significant" and will require surgery. "That's a possibility," coach Todd Haley said Monday when asked if Cassel could be done for the year. "I wouldn't say it's an absolute." Cassel hurt his throwing hand in the Chiefs' home game against the Broncos, a 17-10 loss that dropped them to 4-5. For now, Cassel will not be placed on the injured-reserve list, which would officially end his season.

Hunt stands behind Pioli and Haley
October 28
Kansas City Star
"
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt expressed confidence in general manager Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley on Thursday, saying the relationship between the two is strong enough to allow the Chiefs to compete for a Super Bowl championship. "Absolutely," Hunt told The Kansas City Star during an interview. "There's no question about that." Hunt indicated that if the Chiefs decided to replace Haley, it would not be because of any problems in his relationship with Pioli. "Making a head coaching change," he said, "is not something we're contemplating. "They have an excellent relationship. I understand there's been a lot of focus on that subject. But in the time I've been around them, they work very

Chiefs suddenly have division lead in their sights
October 24

Todd Haley likes to say that for the Chiefs, their next game is always the biggest they will play. This week, at least, he will hear an argument from no one. It may be amazing considering the awful way they started their season. But after their 28-0 win over the Raiders on Sunday, the 3-3 Chiefs will be playing for a share of first place in the AFC West in their next game a week from tonight against 4-2 San Diego at Arrowhead Stadium. "That game," Haley said, "will be as big or bigger than this one."

Why Baldwin may continue to be inactive

Just because he's over the broken thumb he received in the training camp fight with teammate Thomas Jones, don't automatically assume Jonathan Baldwin will play in Sunday's game against the Raiders in Oakland. ''I don't think it's a lock that Jonathan will be active or not,'' coach Todd Haley said at his news conference today. ''Right now, we'll go through this week. There are a lot of factors that will play into that decision. ''We'll see how it plays out once we get going here.''

Cassel's quarterback play isn't inspiring hope
September 26
Kansas City Star
"
Really, they have so much reason to feel good in this place. The Chiefs played their best game of the season and even if that's a classic thinnest-kid-at-fat-camp compliment, there is enough that the large men in this locker room should be smiling and whooping about. Instead, the silence is broken only by the muted shuffling of equipment managers and the hushed questions from reporters about a blown opportunity. And to be clear, it's Matt Cassel who blew this opportunity. The wake of the Chiefs' 20-17 loss to the Chargers is a good time to wonder how many more chances he should get. Because no matter how much lipstick the Chiefs try to put on it, this is the kind of failure that can stick

Haley stresses reducing turnovers
September 15
Kansas City Star
"
Chiefs coach Todd Haley admitted Wednesday that his team has plenty to correct after last Sunday's 41-7 loss to Buffalo, but the most emphasis will go on reducing turnovers. Kansas City had three turnovers, all of which led to Bills' touchdowns. Haley said the first one, Dexter McCluster's fumble on the opening kickoff, put the team at an immediate disadvantage. "We change the entire energy of the building, and though there were a few spots in that game where I believe we could have turned the tide, we were unable to do it," Haley said. Running back Jamaal Charles also fumbled deep in Kansas City territory, and quarterback Matt Cassel had an interception that led to another touchdown . The

As if Sunday's woeful defeat to the Buffalo Bills wasn't bad enough, the Chiefs received more devastating news on Monday when they learned they've lost one of their brightest young stars to a season-ending knee injury. Pro Bowl strong safety Eric Berry will be placed on injured reserve after tearing ligaments in his left knee early in the Chiefs' 41-7 loss at Arrowhead Stadium, a game already infamous for being the worst opening-day defeat in franchise history. The Chiefs would feel for any fallen teammate who will miss the entire season because of an injury. But they experienced a special sense of loss this week seeing Tony Moeaki hobble through the locker room on crutches. They'd pinned much of their hope for this season on simply fine-tuning a high-flying passing attack until Moeaki, a second-year tight end out of Iowa, tore the ACL in his left knee during last week's final preseason game at Green Bay and was placed on injured reserve two days later. Now, that fine-tuning is looking more like an overhaul. "Obviously, we're going to miss Tony," quarterback Matt Cassel said. "We're going to have to move forward with somebody else. Whether that

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said he never stopped having confidence in his kick returners, even as they struggled during the first two preseason games. Haley held back Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster and Steve Breaston while a handful of fringe players were given chances. Those players didn't make a solid impression, and now Kansas City's marquee returners are back in the spotlight. Todd Haley finally revealed the answer to a mystery that began in the winter months, curled into summer and wouldn't conclude until four days before the Chiefs begin the regular season against the Buffalo Bills: Who will call the team's offensive plays? There were three reasonable candidates, but on Wednesday, it was one of the long shots announced as the competition's winner. "Bill Muir," Haley said finally, more than seven months since promoting the longtime coach into the team's vacancy at offensive coordinator. "It's a group contribution of what we like, where we like it, and kind of place that along the call sheet. But ultimately it will fall to Bill to make those decisions." Now, a

Cassel's pain tolerance will determine whether he plays

Matt Cassel's upcoming week, and the short-term outlook of the Chiefs, could rely on something as unpredictable as a sneeze. Cassel, the Chiefs' starting quarterback, has an injured rib, and twisting or straining could send a shot of pain through him that could keep him out of this week's regular-season opener against Buffalo — or perhaps render him ineffective. A strong laugh could aggravate the injury, received last Friday when Cassel was sacked by Green Bay nose tackle Howard Green. So could a cough or turning over the wrong way in his sleep. Still, on Monday, Cassel declared that he'd be fine; ready to go in six days to start for the Chiefs. "I'm ready to roll," he said.

Chiefs learn painful lesson on playing starters in preseason

No other starting quarterback in the NFL took more snaps in the final week of preseason than the Chiefs' Matt Cassel. And the Chiefs might have paid the price when Cassel suffered a rib injury that could affect his play in Sunday's season opener against Buffalo. It was a chance that Chiefs coach Todd Haley continues to defend, though it certainly surprised some observers, including former Chiefs quarterback and NFL MVP Rich Gannon, who was broadcasting the preseason finale as an analyst for Green Bay's preseason telecasts. "I was surprised to not just see the quarterback, but a lot of the starters playing in the fourth quarter," said Gannon, who will cover the Chiefs' opener for CBS. "I

Cassel declares that he's healthy enough for opener
September 6
Kansas City Star
"
With a simple proclamation, Matt Cassel tried to put to rest any doubt he would be the Chiefs starting quarterback Sunday in their regular-season opener against Buffalo at Arrowhead Stadium. Let us remind ourselves that Cassel has made quick recoveries before. Last season, when the Chiefs needed him down the stretch in December, Cassel started against the Rams in St. Louis only 11 days after an emergency appendectomy. And he led the Chiefs to a 27-13 victory that helped his team make the playoffs. So maybe when Cassel says he's ready to go, well, he's ready to go. "I'm good," Cassel said after Monday's practice. "I'm ready to roll." The process may not be quite that simple. The decision

Chiefs claim offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waivers from Patriots

"
The Chiefs claimed offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waivers from New England. Maneri went to camp with Tennessee last season and the Patriots this year. The addition of Maneri gives the Chiefs, who were thin at the position, eight offensive linemen. To clear room on the roster, the Chiefs released veteran tight end Anthony Becht. That leaves the Chiefs with two tight ends, Leonard Pope and Jake O'Connell.

Chiefs QB Cassel has rib injury, could miss Buffalo game
September 5

The Chiefs said Matt Cassel had nothing more than the wind knocked out of him when he left their final preseason game against Green Bay midway through the second quarter after being sacked. It turns out Cassel has more than that. Cassel has a rib injury that could prevent him from playing in Sunday's regular season opener against Buffalo at Arrowhead Stadium. If Cassel can't play against the Bills, Tyler Palko is the likely starting quarterback. Palko has bounced around to several NFL teams but has never started a regular-season game. A source close to the situation said Chiefs coach Todd Haley told Palko after the game, "You'd better be ready to play Sunday.''

Cassel not pleased but gets some satisfaction

Matt Cassel stood in the visitors' locker room after another preseason loss, this one at least an improvement for him personally. But still another Chiefs loss that, if it's remembered at all, will be for the mistakes that overshadowed Cassel's performance. "We did some good things. We can't turn the ball over seven times," he said, overestimating the five turnovers that Kansas City finished with in a 20-19 loss to the Packers. "We hurt ourselves on many of those drives, and we had some penalties as well. That's been the theme throughout the preseason." One theme that seemed to end Thursday was that Cassel would be limited throughout the preseason. He had completed only a dozen passes in

Chiefs lose Brandon Siler for season with torn Achilles'

"
The Chiefs lost a valuable reserve linebacker and special-teams player Tuesday when Brandon Siler tore his Achilles' tendon. The Chiefs made no announcement, but Siler is lost for the season. Siler, who was signed last month as a free agent from San Diego, was injured on the final play of Tuesday's practice. He was trying to make a tackle on a goal-line play when he was injured. He has had surgery to reattach the tendon. "I think we have good depth, but it's always tough to lose a linebacker or any kind of player," linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "This is a violent sport and injuries happen, and that's the unfortunate part." Johnson and Jovan Belcher are the starters at inside linebacker.

Chiefs expedite evaluations as first roster cuts loom
August 25
Kansas City Star
"
Time always creeps up on a coaching staff, and that's particularly true for the Chiefs in this most unusual of training camps. The first of two roster cutdown dates already looms after Friday night's game against St. Louis at Arrowhead Stadium. "As coaches, you're never happy," coach Todd Haley said. "You want more, more, more and more time. It's always good." Haley went on to say he believed the Chiefs were making progress in their player evaluations. But in a year without any offseason practices and were limited to one training camp session per day, they will have to make some snap judgments on which players make the roster and which players don't. The Chiefs, who have 89 players on

Baldwin back on sideline after fight with teammate
August 22

"
With his injured right thumb heavily wrapped, rookie Jonathan Baldwin worked with other injured players off to the side at Chiefs practice Sunday. Baldwin at one point played catch with fellow wide receiver Steve Breaston. Baldwin both caught the ball and tossed it left-handed. Baldwin was injured during a fight last week with running back Thomas Jones and didn't accompany the Chiefs to Baltimore for last week's preseason game against the Ravens. He wasn't in the locker room during the media interview period after practice. Coach Todd Haley again said he wouldn't discuss the incident between Baldwin and Jones. "Most everything that happens within these walls is family business," Haley

The Chiefs almost traded Jamaal Charles
August 19

"
Not recently, but once upon a time. I just finished a radio spot on a Baltimore station to talk about tonight's Ravens-Chiefs game. One of the hosts was Vinny Cerrato, Washington's former general manager. He said that shortly after Scott Pioli and Todd Haley joined the Chiefs in 2009, he called and offered a fourth-round pick for Jamaal Charles.

Report: Jonathan Baldwin hurts wrist in locker room fight
August 19
Pro Football Talk
"
Chiefs first round wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin was mysteriously missing from Chiefs practice on Wednesday. A radio report in Kansas City hinted there may be more to the story, but we passed on mentioning it until more information came out. Well, it's out now. If Nick Wright of 610 radio in Kansas City is right, the story is a doozy. Wright reports that Baldwin will likely miss the rest of the preseason after injuring his wrist during a locker room scuffle with teammate Thomas Jones. Baldwin's work ethic has reportedly been an issue.

NFL's Supplemental Draft postponed indefinitely
August 17
CBSSports.com
"
The NFL informed its 32 teams in an email this evening that the supplemental draft has been postponed, according to a source within the league. The draft, which had been set to take place Wednesday, has not yet been been rescheduled. The email circulated simply didn't provide a date, according to the source. The postponement was presumably made to give the league more time to determine whether or not Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor should be found eligible and to allow he and other players time to conduct a Pro Day workout of sorts for scouts.
