Chiefs Trade Rumors

Bowe suspended for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing drugs
"They were smiling in the locker room, and that has been an unusual thing to see after Chiefs games this season. The Chiefs had won their second game of 2009, and their wide receivers had as much to do with it as anyone. On one side of the visitors locker room at Oakland Coliseum, third-year wide receiver Dwayne Bowe put on a hat, slipped on a pair of noise-canceling headphones and left. On the opposite side of the room, Chris Chambers discussed what it meant to be part of a win, part of an improving wideouts unit, and part of a reliable tandem alongside Bowe. Chambers said that Bowe has plenty of potential. But… "He's young," Chambers said. "He's got some growing up to do." That became ..."
Larry Johnson inks deal to join the Cincinnati Bengals
"Larry Johnson is a Bengal after agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with the team this morning. The Bengals still have not made an official announcement since they still have to make a roster move to put Johnson on the 53-man roster. Johnson arrived on Monday night in Cincinnati and met with the coach Marvin Lewis and his staff. Since being released by the Chiefs last Monday, Johnson had talked but the Bengals will be the one to take a chance on the oft-troubled seven-year running back. Lewis spoke with Johnson last Thursday about possibly coming to the team. Lewis also said on Monday that Johnson would be the fourth running back and that the role of the three backs on the roster ..."
Larry Johnson expected to sign with Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday
"Barring any last-minute hiccups, the Bengals are expected to announce Tuesday that they have signed former Kansas City running back Larry Johnson as an insurance policy in case of injuries. Johnson arrived in town on Monday and met with the coaching staff. ESPN reported earlier in the day that the deal would be worth the prorated league minimum. If that's the case, then Johnson would earn $306,764.43 for the remaining seven games. Since being released by the Chiefs last Monday, Johnson has talked to other teams, but it appears as if the Bengals will be the one to take a chance on the oft-troubled seven-year running back. In order to address or quell rumors, coach Marvin Lewis said during ..."
Bengals-Johnson union imminent?
"Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was en route to Cincinnati on Monday and, barring a last-minute breakdown, he expects to sign with the AFC North-leading Bengals, a source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN's Michael Smith. A deal, if consummated, is expected to be for the prorated league minimum. The Bengals, along with several other teams, first expressed interest in Johnson last week as depth behind Cedric Benson, who suffered a hip injury in Sunday's 18-12 victory at Pittsburgh."
Smith could start at running back against Raiders
"Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Friday that Kolby Smith could start at running back Sunday at Oakland, but he didn't commit to a starter, saying the first offensive play could influence the decision. Smith was activated last week after missing the previous year while rehabbing from a knee injury. Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage are the Chiefs' other options. "This is a major injury that he's come back from," Haley said. "It would be unrealistic to believe that a guy, after 12 months of rehab, surgery, all the things that he's done, to expect him to come in and be at the top of his game. "He's worked very hard. He's practiced now four weeks, so I would say he's getting better. But I would ..."
Source: No team claimed Larry Johnson
"No team claimed running back Larry Johnson off waivers, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, which means Johnson now is free to sign with any team and the Kansas City Chiefs must pay him the balance of the $2.1 million left on his contract this season. The Chiefs released Johnson on Monday, the day he was due back from his second suspension in the past 12 months. Johnson was suspended for posting a gay slur on his Twitter account and questioning the competence of head coach Todd Haley. The 29-year-old was also fined for his actions. Last week, an online fan petition was started asking the Chiefs not to let Johnson become the team's all-time leading rusher -- a record he's ..."
Texans not pursuing free agent RB Johnson
"After evaluating Larry Johnson for the last two days, the Texans have decided not to pursue the free agent running back. Johnson, who turns 30 next week, was placed on waivers by Kansas City on Monday, the day he returned from a two-week suspension for using anti-gay slurs and for criticizing Chiefs coach Todd Haley. Johnson, who also was suspended in 2008, cleared waivers, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Texans were considering Johnson because they're trying to improve a disappointing running game that ranks 27th with an average of 90.8 yards a game. The Texans evaluated running back Edgerrin James last week after Seattle released him. They ruled out James and now Johnson, ..."
Johnson tells radio show he'd like to return to Chiefs someday
"Larry Johnson is a Kansas City outsider now, even if he does still say "we" when he's referring to the Chiefs. He's part of the past, even if he does want to someday return and break the team's career rushing record. Whether his release was what Johnson wanted or what he needed, that's the way it is for the 29-year-old running back. And in his first public comments since a series of Twitter posts began a career-changing mess, Johnson told a syndicated radio show Tuesday that he didn't want out of Kansas City — but that he thought it was time to move on. "It just felt like it was just time," Johnson said on the Dan Patrick Show. "I just felt like I gave Kansas City all that I had as far as ..."
Chiefs release Larry Johnson
"The Chiefs released running back Larry Johnson on Monday, his first day back from a two-week suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Johnson called out coach Todd Haley two weeks ago in a Twitter post before using a pair of gay slurs on his Twitter profile and, a day later, to a group of reporters. He missed Sunday’s game at Jacksonville, and the suspension cost him about $330,000. He also ended his Chiefs career 74 yards short of the franchise rushing record, set by Priest Holmes. Johnson’s high point with the Chiefs was in 2006, when he established an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts and a franchise single-season mark with 1,789 rushing yards. He was the Chiefs’ ..."
Chiefs safeties Page, McGraw may miss Jacksonville game
"The Chiefs could be without free safeties Jarrad Page and Jon McGraw for Sunday's game against the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Page was absent when the Chiefs returned to practice Monday. A player's absence from practice for medical reasons usually indicates a serious injury. Coach Todd Haley wouldn't talk about Page's absence other than to say he suffered a new injury in last Thursday's practice and would disclose more information as soon as today. McGraw's injury, which the Chiefs haven't specified, doesn't appear as serious as Page's. But he could also miss the Jaguars game. McGraw didn't practice Monday, but he was riding a stationary bicycle in a corner of the practice field in the area ..."
Chiefs, LJ working on a settlement
"The Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson are working on a settlement that could affect his future, Johnson's agent told The Star on Thursday. Peter Schaffer, who has represented Johnson for about a year, said in an e-mail that he was working on an appeal of Johnson's two-week suspension at the same time as he and the Chiefs are discussing a settlement. "Full bore on both," Schaffer wrote. Asked whether that settlement could involve Johnson's separation from the team, Schaffer wrote: "Not necessarily." Schaffer was later reached by phone Thursday night. When asked whether he expects Johnson to play with the Chiefs again, Schaffer said: "Larry Johnson is a member of the Chiefs right now." ..."
Chiefs release rookie WR Lawrence, promote Long off practice squad
"The Chiefs made a late roster move before today's game against San Diego, promoting wide receiver Lance Long and releasing rookie Quinten Lawrence. Long, also a rookie, likely will be used primarily on special teams and could try returning kickoffs. He had been on the practice squad since joining the team last month. Lawrence, who was the Chiefs' sixth-round pick this year, was drafted with the notion of returning kicks in mind. He struggled during training camp and was shuffled out of consideration. If Lawrence clears waivers, he'd be eligible to join the Chiefs' practice squad."
Harbaugh on making a trade: "There are possibilities"
"Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Friday that "there are possibilities" of a trade but he couldn't gauge whether the team would make a move before Tuesday's NFL deadline. There has been speculation -- ESPN started the rumor but nothing confirmed by either team -- that the Ravens will send a second- and fifth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who seems to have had a falling out with new coach Todd Haley. A 2007 first-round pick, Bowe has caught at least 70 passes in his first two seasons and has scored 15 career touchdowns. "It's so hard to anticipate activity," Harbaugh said when asked about the possibility of a trade. "We work on a lot of things. I know ..."
Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has no interest in trading Josh Cribbs
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday he has "no interest in moving Josh Cribbs." In response, Cribbs' agent J.R. Rickert said, "It is unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back. They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate.'' Rickert made it clear that he and Cribbs want the extension -- or a chance to go somewhere else. A source told the Plain Dealer on Thursday that Cribbs would welcome a trade if they won't re-do the deal, which runs through 2012. At least five teams have expressed interest in trading for Cribbs, including Miami, Oakland, Jacksonville and San Francisco, according ..."
Browns' Josh Cribbs reportedly would like trade if new deal can't be reached
"Browns receiver Josh Cribbs wants to remain a Brown for the rest of his career, but if the team is unwilling to extend his contract, he'd welcome trade, a source close to the situation said. Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012. He has made it clear since the off-season that he wants a new deal in the form of a contract extension. In fact, he considered holding out at the beginning of the season. The Browns are believed to be unwilling to trade Cribbs before Tuesday's deadline, a source said. They prefer to hang onto him and perhaps work out a deal in the future. Cribbs is the prototypical player for coach Eric Mangini, one who ..."
Chiefs give Tauscher a look
"Former Green Bay Packers offensive tackle Mark Tauscher worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, profootballtalk.com reported. Tauscher sustained an ACL tear in his left knee last December and wasn't expected to be ready to play until October. Tauscher, who had served as the Packers' starting right tackle since 2000, is an unrestricted free agent. Packers General Manager Ted Thompson talked with Tauscher during the summer about his rehabilitation and said he wouldn't rule out re-signing him. But despite the Packers' recent problems on the offensive line, there has been no indication the Packers are interested in Tauscher. Meanwhile, guard Stanley Daniels was signed to the practice ..."
Cassel continues to make progress
"Matt Cassel reported progress regarding his injured left knee, but the decision whether he will start at quarterback for the Chiefs on Sunday when they play the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium will be made by coach Todd Haley. Haley, again, wouldn't commit one way or the other. "We've got to make sure we get it right, and we'll make an evaluation that includes (today)," Haley said. Cassel was again listed on the league's injury report as not being a full participant in Thursday's practice. But Cassel said he had a sense he would be ready to go. "I feel like I'm leaps and bounds ahead of where I was last week at this time," he said. That progress, Cassel said, is evident by the fact his ..."
Former Vikings receiver Bobby Wade agrees to deal with Kansas City Chiefs
"Veteran receiver Bobby Wade had options. But, ultimately, Wade decided to reunite with a familiar coach, according to his agent, Jerome Stanley. Wade signed a one-year contract Monday with the Kansas City Chiefs, who hired Todd Haley as their new head coach this year. Haley was the receivers coach in Chicago during Wade's rookie season in 2003. "He liked what coach Haley was building in KC," Stanley said. "In a lot of ways, it's similar to what he came to in Minnesota, with a different architect." Stanley declined to identify what other team was in the mix for Wade's services, saying only that it was a "high-profile" team. That is believed to be the Indianapolis Colts, who are ..."
Chiefs aren't shedding any light on Cassel's status
"Matt Cassel doesn't know whether he'll be healthy enough to be the Chiefs' starting quarterback Sunday, but he was at least healthy enough to answer questions Thursday about his sprained left knee - and what that means for his immediate future. In the time normally set aside for the starting quarterback's news conference, Cassel said he was making progress since suffering the injury early in the Chiefs' third preseason game. He has participated in practices this week. But in individual drills on Thursday, Cassel still appeared to run with a limp. "I wouldn't be out there if I didn't feel up for the challenge," Cassel said. "It's up to the trainers to say whether or not I'm ready to go, ..."
Jets looking to make trade for wide receiver with Brandon Marshall, Dwanye Bowe on radar
"The Jets are known for making deals in August - remember some guy named Favre? - and they're thinking trade once again. They're exploring the wide-receiver market and have held preliminary discussions with a few teams, according to NFL sources. Although he's not officially on the trading block, the biggest name on the Jets' radar is the Broncos' Brandon Marshall, who has issued a pay me-or-trade me demand. The Broncos reportedly have no interest in trading Marshall, 25, one of the top young receivers in the league, but they also said the same thing about quarterback Jay Cutler - and now he's playing for the Bears. Because of off-the-field issues, a surgically repaired hip and enormous ..."
Chiefs lock up Cassel
"Matt Cassel, a career backup in college and in the pros, parlayed a great 2008 season into a lucrative franchise tag. Now, he's locked himself into a deal to be the long-term quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. Cassel and the Chiefs worked out a six-year deal that will pay him in excess of $10 million a season, according to a source. The contract will keep Cassel with the Chiefs until 2014. The deal is for $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed, according to a source. He's going to make $40.5 million in the first three years of his contract. Cassel was designated as the New England Patriots' franchise player in February and signed a one-year deal that paid him $14.561 million. He was ..."
Mike Brown to visit with Kansas City Chiefs today
"Mike Brown could find some familiar faces to work with this season, but they won't be at Halas Hall. The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in the veteran safety for a visit today, according to a league source, in a move that would reunite him with first-year head coach Todd Haley, who was the Bears' receivers coach from 2001 to 2003. The Bears let Brown's contract expire, and he has been a free agent for three months. Brown told another source he is motivated to prove he remains a starting-caliber player. His injury history includes a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the season opener at San Diego in 2007. Brown, 31, played his final game for the Bears on Dec. 22 against Green Bay before ..."
Is IR system in line for a change?
"When the NFL adopted its system for placing players on season-ending injured reserve, the main issue was stashing. Teams had long been allowed to place players on injured reserve and bring them back later in the season. But some felt that clubs were circumventing the rule by placing players who weren't truly injured on IR, opening a roster spot for someone else. Thus, a competitive advantage was scored. Colts president Bill Polian remembers high-profile coaches and personnel executives, such as Don Shula and Jim Finks, pushing for a change to combat stashing, and it finally came in 1993, when the league made two significant adjustments. At that time, players placed on injured reserve would ..."
Chiefs fire vice president Kuharich
"The shakeup of the Chiefs' scouting department continued with the firing of vice president Bill Kuharich, who was responsible for their pro and college scouting. Kuharich joined the Chiefs in 2000 as their pro personnel director. He was given oversight of the draft three years ago when the Chiefs hired Herm Edwards as their head coach. The Chiefs on Monday fired most members of their college scouting department, including director Chuck Cook. When he was hired in January, general manager Scott Pioli was given wide latitude to create a personnel team around him, and he used it. Kuharich, Cook and many of the Chiefs' former scouts were well-respected around the league. "When there's a change ..."
Chiefs fire VP Bill Kuharich
"The Chiefs today fired Bill Kuharich, their vice president for player personnel. Kuharich joined the Chiefs as their personnel director in 2006 and was promoted three years ago, about the same time the Chiefs hired Herm Edwards. He had been the president and general manager of the New Orleans Saints before joining the Chiefs."
Tony Gonzalez says his farewell to KC is only temporary
"Tony Gonzalez said goodbye to Kansas City on Tuesday, but the legendary tight end said he's merely on loan to the Atlanta Falcons. The 10-time Pro Bowler met with reporters Tuesday morning in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, saying that he might be going to Atlanta now after last week's trade, but Gonzalez insisted that he'll someday retire as a Chief. Gonzalez was traded to the Falcons last Thursday for a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft. It ended the 33-year-old's 12-year affiliation with Kansas City, which traded up to draft him as a 21-year-old in 1997. He has since broken every major tight end receiving record, and former Chiefs president ..."
Chiefs, QB Cassel agree on six-year deal
"The Kansas City Chiefs and QB Matt Cassel have reached an agreement on a new six-year deal, NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reports. Complete financial details weren't immediately known, but the deal will include $36 million in guaranteed money. That's $5.7 million less than Matthew Stafford, who hasn't taken an NFL snap, will receive in guaranteed money from the Detroit Lions as the No. 1 draft pick. Cassel led the New England Patriots to an 11-5 record in 2008 after Tom Brady was lost for the season in the opener. Cassel completed 327 of 516 passes for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Cassel and then traded him to the Chiefs, ..."
What Chiefs decide on LJ could have impact on their draft
"He walks in late, focused and quiet, approaching the disorganized locker that wasn't large or angular enough to contain his workout gear, most of it spilling to the floor. His presence isn't pretty, but Larry Johnson is here. He's in the building for the Chiefs' three-day, voluntary minicamp. But he doesn't want to talk about it. Johnson shakes his head when a reporter asks whether he's talking today. It's a standard question, and with Johnson, it's the standard response. There is so much to explain. Johnson's public declarations in December and February that he wanted out of Kansas City. That he wasn't happy here, and the community didn't seem happy with him, either. His first impressions ..."
Chiefs GM Pioli has a plan and isn't afraid to make moves
"From the drafting of a college backup quarterback named Matt Cassel to a daring deal for a moody wide receiver in Randy Moss to Thursday's unpopular trade of Tony Gonzalez, Scott Pioli's approach to player moves can be summed up in one word: bold. That's something to remember as Pioli, formerly the top personnel assistant to Bill Belichick at New England, embarks today on his first draft as Chiefs general manager. This Chiefs draft probably won't go as anyone outside the tight circle of team officials predicts. "The Patriots really don't care what other people think," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said. "They define value as players that are going to help them. What the Patriots ..."
Kansas City Chiefs trade Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta Falcons
"The Atlanta Falcons have obtained tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs for a draft pick next year. The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, the Chiefs announced Thursday. Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards receiving, 76 TDs receiving and 26 100-yard receiving games."
All-draft edition with T. Gonzalez!
"Late-breaking update: The Falcons have a tight end! And, according to Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com, he isn't Brandon Pettigrew. He's Tony Gonzalez, the 10-time Pro Bowler. The Falcons have acquired him from Kansas City for a second-round draft pick in 2010. This does two things: First, it enables the Falcons to go hog-wild in the pursuit of defense over the weekend, and second, it pretty well cements the bond between Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff and his Kansas City counterpart Scott Pioli, who used to be Dimitroff's boss in New England. Me, I'd call it a win-win for everybody. But maybe that's just me. "In Round 4, the Atlanta Falcons…"I said I wasn't going to do it, but I did it ..."
Sources: Chiefs Agree to Deal Gonzalez to Falcons
"Tony Gonzalez is finally getting his wish. The Chiefs have agreed to trade the perennial Pro Bowl tight end to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft, FOXSports.com has learned. Gonzalez has been the symbol of the Chiefs offense for the past 12 seasons, making 10 consecutive Pro Bowls and six All-Pro teams. Kansas City drafted him with the 13th overall pick in 1997."
Eagles May Yet Land Gonzalez
"The Eagles "might have nosed ahead" of the Falcons in the Tony Gonzalez trade talks, according to SI.com's Don Banks. The report says that the Eagles have offered Kansas City a third round pick for the future Hall of Fame tight end. Kansas City still wants a second round pick and SI.com says that lowering their demands may be "upsetting their fan base". I love the attempt by the Eagles to pick up Gonzo. There aren't any elite pass catching, game-impacting tight ends this year."
Chiefs sign veteran LB Zach Thomas
"The Chiefs added another part to their defense Saturday when they agreed to contract terms with veteran linebacker Zach Thomas. Thomas turns 36 in September, but he has made seven trips to the Pro Bowl in his 13 NFL seasons. His most recent Pro Bowl season came in 2006 with Miami, but Thomas started 14 games last year in his first season with Dallas after 12 years with the Dolphins. Thomas is the second veteran linebacker acquired by the Chiefs in recent weeks. He follows Mike Vrabel, who came in the trade with New England that also brought QB Matt Cassel. With the Chiefs looking to play the 3-4 defense next season, Thomas is a probable starter at one inside linebacker position. Vrabel ..."
LJ's case heard by special master
"The case between the Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson was heard Wednesday by a special master, but he made no ruling. Neither side was certain when a ruling would be given. At issue is $3.75 million of guaranteed money Johnson is due from the Chiefs in the contract extension he signed in August 2007. The contract calls for $3.5 million of Johnson's 2009 salary and $250,000 of his 2010 salary to be guaranteed regardless of whether he plays for them or not. The Chiefs claim the one-game suspension he received from the NFL last year for violating the league's personal-conduct policy is a breach of his contract and frees them from having to pay the guaranteed money."
Agent: Chiefs, Johnson have 'open mind'
"The agent for Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson said his client is open to staying with the Chiefs and all sides have an "open mind" about the oft-embattled player playing in Kansas City in 2009. Johnson had previously said he wanted to be traded. However, agent Peter Schaffer pointed out that Johnson is now interested in playing for the new Chiefs regime. Schaffer said, as an act of good faith, Johnson attended the Chiefs' offseason workout program that began Monday. New Chiefs coach Todd Haley told reporters Monday everyone on the team "has a clean slate." Johnson's grievance against the team is set to be heard Wednesday. It is over unpaid bonus money from last season. Still, ..."
Chiefs' top draft choice likely depends on Lions' willingness to gamble
"With the NFL draft inching closer, the Chiefs aren't saying as much, but they're hoping the Detroit Lions are in a gambling mood with the first pick. If they are, that means the Lions will grab quarterback Matt Stafford of Georgia and, of more importance to the Chiefs, leave them with the pick of defensive players when their turn rolls around at No. 3 of the April 25-26 draft. The Rams are in-between with the second pick and seem certain after releasing veteran Orlando Pace to go for one of the top offensive tackles, Jason Smith of Baylor or Eugene Monroe of Virginia. "Certainly the tackle spot we've got to address," St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo said last week at the NFL meetings. ..."
Pioli says Gonzalez did not request a trade
"General manager Scott Pioli said Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez did not request a trade during recent conversations. "He has not indicated to me that he wants to be traded," Pioli said. "I don't want to get into any other specifics of the conversations because those are conversations that will stay between players and (coach Todd Haley) and players and myself. They were good conversations, positive conversations, healthy conversations." Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said this week the Chiefs would not attempt to trade Gonzalez. Pioli said the Chiefs have made no effort to determine what they could get for Gonzalez. "I've not made or fielded any call regarding Tony Gonzalez," he said. Pioli ..."
Pioli looks for specific qualities in free agents
"The Chiefs had enough salary-cap room to buy small countries and certainly had need of many skilled players when the free-agency signing period began last month. General manager Scott Pioli said he was never tempted to solve their many problems by making a big strike in free-agency. "Here's a rule I learned from my mother and father when I was a kid: Just because you have money in your pocket doesn't mean you have to spend it," Pioli said Wednesday at the conclusion of the NFL's annual meetings. "Whether you have a lot or a little, always spend it wisely." The Chiefs spent some Wednesday when they agreed to terms of a two-year, $3.5 million contract with veteran offensive lineman Mike ..."
Pendergast expected to be named Chiefs' defensive coordinator
"The Chiefs were to name Clancy Pendergast as their new defensive coordinator perhaps as soon as today. Pendergast, 41, was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals for the past five seasons. He worked with new Chiefs head coach Todd Haley for the past two years. He has also coached for the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns. The Cardinals played multiple defensive formations last year, at times using the 3-4 and the 4-3."
Chiefs interested in adding some veterans
"After their weekend trade for veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel, the Chiefs may soon be looking to add more veteran players. They are showing interest in linebacker Clark Haggans, 32, and wide receiver Bobby Engram, 36. Haggans, a nine-year NFL veteran, was scheduled to visit with Chiefs officials today. Haggans played eight years for Pittsburgh, and last season joined the Arizona Cardinals, where new Chiefs coach Todd Haley coordinated the offense. Engram, a 13-year veteran, was in Kansas City on Tuesday but departed without a contract offer, agent Mitch Frankel said. Haggans started for the Steelers for four seasons and had a career-high nine sacks when Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl in the ..."
Cassel expected to be dealt to Chiefs
"The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have found their starting quarterback. NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs are expected to trade for New England Patriots QB Matt Cassel on Saturday. The teams have agreed on compensation, according to Schefter, but no details of the deal were immediately available. Cassel was designated as the Patriots’ franchise player on Feb. 5, guaranteeing him $14.65 million next season. The signed tender was officially submitted to the league earlier this week. Cassel saw the first significant action of his career last season, taking over as the starter for the injured Tom Brady in Week 2 and starting 15 games, completing 63.4 percent of his passes for ..."
Chiefs' All-Pro guard Waters wants out of Kansas City
"Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters asked the organization Thursday to release or trade him this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Waters asked for his release two days after a brief meeting with new head coach Todd Haley and after being told by first-time general manager Scott Pioli that he had no interest in meeting with Waters, the source said. Waters, according to the source, was offended and shocked by what he perceived to be the arrogance of Haley and Pioli. Waters' meeting with Haley and follow-up phone conversations confirmed in the nine-year vet's mind that the negative reports about Haley he heard from Arizona Cardinals players while at the Pro Bowl ..."
Chiefs' Pro Bowl player offended by new coach Haley and new GM Pioli
"Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters asked the organization Thursday to release or trade him this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Waters, who played collegiately at North Texas, asked for his release two days after a brief meeting with new head coach Todd Haley and after being told by first-time general manager Scott Pioli that he had no interest in meeting with Waters, the source said. Waters, according to the source, was offended and shocked by what he perceived to be arrogance on the part of Haley and Pioli. Waters' meeting with Haley and follow-up phone conversations confirmed in the nine-year veteran's mind that the negative reports about Haley that he ..."
Chiefs fire five assistant coaches
"Seven weeks after the season has finished, the Chiefs finally got around Friday to firing five of their assistant coaches. Dismissed were position coaches Jon Embree (tight ends), Curtis Modkins (running backs) and Eric Price (wide receivers) as well as quality control coaches Mike Ketchum and Kevin Patullo. It is unclear whether Chan Gailey (offensive coordinator), Bob Bicknell and Joe D'Alessandris (offensive line) and Tim Krumrie (defensive line) will remain with the team and work for new head coach Todd Haley. Four members of Herm Edwards' staff have already departed for other jobs. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham went to the Lions, special-teams coach Mike Priefer to the ..."
Gonzalez says he'd 'have no problems' staying with Chiefs
"After he finished rewriting the Pro Bowl record book Sunday in Honolulu, Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez said he'd "have no problems staying with the Chiefs," depending on what moves the club makes in the offseason. Gonzalez told NBC in a sideline interview that he spoke with new general manager Scott Pioli to dispel some reports from Hawaii concerning his future. "I spoke to Pioli last week because there were some trade rumors out there saying I wanted to have a trade, and that wasn't the case," Gonzalez said. "I said, 'This is the reason I would want a trade.' It was taken out of context. "There is no doubt in my mind that Scott Pioli is going to come in there and do an amazing job and so ..."
Johnson, Gonzalez reiterate their unhappiness with the Chiefs
"The Chiefs couldn't expect to move toward a new chapter without a few old habits sticking around. Tight end Tony Gonzalez and running back Larry Johnson spent time this week campaigning to be put out of their Kansas City misery, whether that's by trade, release or team officials just changing the locks - anything that gets them out of a Chiefs uniform. "You just feel trapped," Johnson said Wednesday morning during a 23-minute appearance on radio station KCSP 610-AM. "Ever since I came to Kansas City, they've been trying to push me out the door. "We can do it the easy way." Hours earlier, a national sports Web site posted a story about Gonzalez's unhappiness and his desire to be traded if ..."
L.J. wants out: Kansas City ‘not a fit for me’
"Larry Johnson wants a clean break. From the Chiefs, and from Kansas City. The running back cleared the air on a number of topics in a wide-ranging interview with KCSP 610 Sports Radio on Wednesday, reiterating he wants to play elsewhere next season but also saying that he ultimately would be open-minded to returning if the circumstances dictated. “I’d rather just play somewhere else,” Johnson told the station. “This is a rebuilding team. I dont’ really think that I belong on this rebuilding team. It’s just the way the league works. I’ve done what I’ve done for Kansas City. I’m not getting no younger, and the team is getting younger. So I’m not sure I fit in the scheme of things. I never ..."
