Chiefs add former K-State player Lilja to offensive line

Kansas City Star
"
The Chiefs have made plenty of mistakes on players in recent seasons, and one of the biggest came six years ago when they let offensive lineman Ryan Lilja out of their grasp. When they finally got another chance to acquire Lilja this week, they didn't let history repeat itself. Lilja paid a visit to the Chiefs, and before it was over on Tuesday, he had put his name on a three-year contract worth $7.5 million. Lilja, who played in high school at Shawnee Mission Northwest and in college at Kansas State, spent the last six seasons with the Colts. He started in all of those seasons except 2008, when he missed the entire year because of a knee injury. The Colts recently released Lilja. Sources ...

Report: Jets could have matched Jones' offer from Chiefs

New York Post
"
The Jets were given a chance to match the deal Thomas Jones signed with the Chiefs, according to ProFootballTalk.com. While analyzing what it would take to bring LaDainian Tomlinson to New York, the report says "Per a league source, the Jets had a chance to match the two-year, $5 million contract that the Chiefs paid to running back Thomas Jones, but opted not to do so."

The Chiefs for the second straight day went into the past of one of their coaches to sign a player. This time, it was wide receiver Jerheme Urban, who played for Todd Haley with the Cardinals in 2007 and 2008. Urban signed a two-year contract. Urban caught a total of 56 passes, six for touchdowns, in those two seasons while Haley was Arizona's offensive coordinator. Urban slipped to 18 catches and no touchdowns last year.

Fargas' first stop in searching for new team: Chiefs
Comment
March 8
San Francisco Chronicle
"
Raiders fans might still get to watch Justin Fargas run next season. It just won't be for their team. One day after Oakland released the running back, Fargas said in a phone interview Sunday he has a visit lined up Tuesday with the Chiefs, an AFC West rival during his seven seasons with the Raiders. His agent has also been in contact with other teams, Fargas said, including the 49ers. He said he certainly doesn't mind the idea of moving across the bay to team up with Niners running back Frank Gore, who by all accounts could use a punishing partner in the backfield. "That could be something," said Fargas, whose two most productive seasons came in 2007-08 under former Raiders running backs ...

Ex-Chiefs offensive lineman visits Bills

Buffalo News
"
Versatile free-agent offensive lineman Wade Smith arrived in Buffalo Friday for a visit with the Bills. Smith is an eight-year NFL veteran who started 16 games the past two seasons as the "sixth man" on the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line. Bills new offensive line coach Joe D'Allessandris served as assistant offensive line coach for the Chiefs the past two years. Smith, 6-foot-4 and 296 pounds, played his first four years with Miami and his next two with the New York Jets. He was a third-round pick of the Dolphins and has 34 starts in 74 career games. The Bills are looking for a veteran interior lineman because both players who filled that role in Buffalo last year no longer are on the ...

Chiefs, Vrabel agree to one-year deal

When linebacker Mike Vrabel cleaned out his locker after the end of the season, he left little doubt he wanted to play for the Chiefs again in 2010. "Walking out of here after my 13th year, I feel pretty good," he said then. "I think I've still got some football left. "There's a desire on both parties to get something done. I'd love to come back here and be a part of getting this thing turned around." Vrabel and the Chiefs made it happen hours before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. The sides agreed on terms of a one-year contract Thursday, allowing him to continue his career in Kansas City and the Chiefs to keep a starting outside linebacker and a mentor to many of their young ...

Reunion would suit Mike Vrabel
Comment
February 27
Boston Herald
"
Prior to the start of last season, Bill Belichick traded veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel away for little more than a stack of hoodies. He was lumped into the Matt Cassel deal to Kansas City for a second-round pick. The $2.2 million salary Vrabel was due, plus a $1 million roster bonus - the math came out to a $4.3 million charge against the cap - apparently wasn't worth the trouble. The Pats needed to create cap space to sign some free agents, and Vrabel became a casualty. His presence in the locker room and the leadership he had provided through eight seasons and three Super Bowl championships didn't seem to matter. Nor did the fact that he remained the team's best pass-rushing threat from ...

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is expected to be released in the coming days, and the Kansas City Star speculated that the Chiefs could be a good fit. That is, if the price is right and Tomlinson, who turns 31 on June 23, is willing to accept a backup role behind starter Jamaal Charles. Tomlinson could see more work in Kansas City than backups in other places because Charles (5-11, 199) isn't built to handle more than 20 touches a game. ... Clark Hunt has said it many times since becoming chairman of the Chiefs: He believes in building the team through the draft. Hunt and the Chiefs may have little choice this year. The NFL's owners and players are heading into the final year of the collective-bargaining agreement, and new rules will govern the free-agent market when it opens March 5. Teams won't be limited by a salary cap, but a limited number of players will be available. Nobody is certain how things will unfold, but it doesn't appear teams will be able to load up on free-agent talent. "It's going to be very unpredictable," Hunt said. "We haven't been through a year like this when we had this set of rules. On the one hand, ...

Romeo Crennel will be Chiefs' defensive coordinator

The Chiefs have agreed to contract terms with their new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, although they will have to wait a couple of weeks for him to get to work. Crennel is committed to coaching in the East-West college all-star game in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 23. After that, Crennel will join the Chiefs full-time to replace Clancy Pendergast. The New England Patriots won three Super Bowls with Crennel as defensive coordinator and Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator. Last week, the Chiefs hired Weis as offensive coordinator after he was fired as head coach at Notre Dame.

Still, Crennel's agent made it clear his client was chatting with the Giants and at least one other mystery team. Well, now Crennel is officially focusing solely on Kansas City. The former Browns coach, an assistant coach with the Giants for more than a decade, has decided to pursue a job with the Chiefs, according to someone familiar with the 62-year-old former Patriots coordinator. Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Crennel talked to the Giants on Monday. If the Chiefs want Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator, the next move is theirs. Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said Tuesday the veteran coordinator's preference was to work next season for the Chiefs. "Would he take it if they offered the job? I suppose he would," Linta said. Chiefs coach Todd Haley has said he would evaluate the performance of the defensive coaches, including coordinator Clancy Pendergast, and make a determination on which ones would return next season. Defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, whose contract expired, has been told he won't return. Linta said Crennel has already discussed the coordinator's position with Haley. That suggests Haley has decided to make a ...

Amid speculation that former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis could be headed to Chicago to replace fired offensive coordinator Ron Turner, a league source said that Weis actually might be bound for Kansas City. Weis has spoken with the Chiefs multiple times since being fired Nov. 30 after losing four in a row to finish 6-6 in 2009 and 35-27 over five seasons. He has relationships with a number of people in the organization, including general manager Scott Pioli, whom he worked with in New England, and head coach Todd Haley, with whom he shared office space as assistants with the Jets. "I would expect a decision in the next couple of days," the source said.

Kansas City wanted to hire the former Cleveland Browns head coach as its defensive coordinator last offseason, but his hip surgery made it too challenging for him to do the job right. Now that Crennel is healed from his hip surgery and itching to return, he is likely to join Kansas City's coaching staff this offseason.

One of Sunday's few bright spots, second-year tight end Brad Cottam, will miss the rest of the year with a back injury. The Chiefs will move Cottam to injured reserve today. There is no spinal cord damage, and Cottam has no decreased function in his extremities.

The Chiefs re-added their best wide receiver Saturday, but it came at a cost to another weakened position. Kansas City activated Dwayne Bowe to the 53-man roster, making him eligible to play in today's home finale against Cleveland. Bowe rejoined the team Monday after a four-week NFL suspension for violating the league's policy on performance- enhancing substances. To make room for Bowe, the Chiefs placed running back Dantrell Savage on injured reserve. Savage had been listed as questionable because of an ankle injury. He joins Kolby Smith, who was placed on IR two weeks earlier.

Running back Kolby Smith, who missed part of last season because of a knee injury, could be in danger of cutting another season short. Chiefs coach Todd Haley acknowledged Friday that the ankle injury Smith suffered two weeks ago could land him on injured reserve. "We're having further evaluation," Haley said. "We'll see." Smith injured the ankle in the win two weeks ago against Pittsburgh, and it was his third game appearance since being activated in early November after recovering from the knee injury. Smith began this season on the physically-unable-to-perform list before the Chiefs activated him before a game at Jacksonville. That leaves a lack of depth at a position the Chiefs once ...

Todd Haley shared a cramped 8-by-8 office with Charlie Weis for three years when both were assistant coaches with the New York Jets in the late 1990s. "I know Charlie," Haley said Monday, "about as up close and personal as you can know him." If they could peacefully coexist under those circumstances, it stands to reason they could probably do so with Haley as head coach of the Chiefs and Weis as the offensive coordinator. Weis, after being fired as Notre Dame's head coach Monday, is out of a job. Haley may soon be searching for an offensive coordinator for the Chiefs. Add in the fact that Weis worked with Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli in New England, and a Haley-Weis reunion seems to ...

They were smiling in the locker room, and that has been an unusual thing to see after Chiefs games this season. The Chiefs had won their second game of 2009, and their wide receivers had as much to do with it as anyone. On one side of the visitors locker room at Oakland Coliseum, third-year wide receiver Dwayne Bowe put on a hat, slipped on a pair of noise-canceling headphones and left. On the opposite side of the room, Chris Chambers discussed what it meant to be part of a win, part of an improving wideouts unit, and part of a reliable tandem alongside Bowe. Chambers said that Bowe has plenty of potential. But… "He's young," Chambers said. "He's got some growing up to do." That became ...

Larry Johnson is a Bengal after agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with the team this morning. The Bengals still have not made an official announcement since they still have to make a roster move to put Johnson on the 53-man roster. Johnson arrived on Monday night in Cincinnati and met with the coach Marvin Lewis and his staff. Since being released by the Chiefs last Monday, Johnson had talked but the Bengals will be the one to take a chance on the oft-troubled seven-year running back. Barring any last-minute hiccups, the Bengals are expected to announce Tuesday that they have signed former Kansas City running back Larry Johnson as an insurance policy in case of injuries. Johnson arrived in town on Monday and met with the coaching staff. ESPN reported earlier in the day that the deal would be worth the prorated league minimum. If that's the case, then Johnson would earn $306,764.43 for the remaining seven games. Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Friday that Kolby Smith could start at running back Sunday at Oakland, but he didn't commit to a starter, saying the first offensive play could influence the decision. Smith was activated last week after missing the previous year while rehabbing from a knee injury. Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage are the Chiefs' other options. "This is a major injury that he's come back from," Haley said. "It would be unrealistic to believe that a guy, after 12 months of rehab, surgery, all the things that he's done, to expect him to come in and be at the top of his game. "He's worked very hard. No team claimed running back Larry Johnson off waivers, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, which means Johnson now is free to sign with any team and the Kansas City Chiefs must pay him the balance of the $2.1 million left on his contract this season. The Chiefs released Johnson on Monday, the day he was due back from his second suspension in the past 12 months. Johnson was suspended for posting a gay slur on his Twitter account and questioning the competence of head coach Todd Haley. The 29-year-old was also fined for his actions. After evaluating Larry Johnson for the last two days, the Texans have decided not to pursue the free agent running back. Johnson, who turns 30 next week, was placed on waivers by Kansas City on Monday, the day he returned from a two-week suspension for using anti-gay slurs and for criticizing Chiefs coach Todd Haley. Johnson, who also was suspended in 2008, cleared waivers, making him an unrestricted free agent. Whether his release was what Johnson wanted or what he needed, that's the way it is for the 29-year-old running back. And in his first public comments since a series of Twitter posts began a career-changing mess, Johnson told a syndicated radio show Tuesday that he didn't want out of Kansas City — but that he thought it was time to move on. He missed Sunday’s game at Jacksonville, and the suspension cost him about $330,000. He also ended his Chiefs career 74 yards short of the franchise rushing record, set by Priest Holmes. The Chiefs could be without free safeties Jarrad Page and Jon McGraw for Sunday's game against the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Page was absent when the Chiefs returned to practice Monday. A player's absence from practice for medical reasons usually indicates a serious injury. Coach Todd Haley wouldn't talk about Page's absence other than to say he suffered a new injury in last Thursday's practice and would disclose more information as soon as today. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Friday that "there are possibilities" of a trade but he couldn't gauge whether the team would make a move before Tuesday's NFL deadline. There has been speculation -- ESPN started the rumor but nothing confirmed by either team -- that the Ravens will send a second- and fifth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who seems to have had a falling out with new coach Todd Haley. A 2007 first-round pick, Bowe has caught at least 70 passes in his first two seasons and has scored 15 career touchdowns. Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday he has "no interest in moving Josh Cribbs." In response, Cribbs' agent J.R. Rickert said, "It is unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back. They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate.'' Rickert made it clear that he and Cribbs want the extension -- or a chance to go somewhere else. Browns receiver Josh Cribbs wants to remain a Brown for the rest of his career, but if the team is unwilling to extend his contract, he'd welcome trade, a source close to the situation said. Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012. He has made it clear since the off-season that he wants a new deal in the form of a contract extension. In fact, he considered holding out at the beginning of the season. The Browns are believed to be unwilling to trade Cribbs before Tuesday's deadline, a source said. They prefer to hang onto him and perhaps work out a deal in the future. Haley, again, wouldn't commit one way or the other. "We've got to make sure we get it right, and we'll make an evaluation that includes (today)," Haley said. Cassel was again listed on the league's injury report as not being a full participant in Thursday's practice. But Cassel said he had a sense he would be ready to go. "I feel like I'm leaps and bounds ahead of where I was last week at this time," he said. That progress, Cassel said, is evident by the fact his ...

Former Vikings receiver Bobby Wade agrees to deal with Kansas City Chiefs

St. Paul Pioneer Press
"
Veteran receiver Bobby Wade had options. But, ultimately, Wade decided to reunite with a familiar coach, according to his agent, Jerome Stanley. Wade signed a one-year contract Monday with the Kansas City Chiefs, who hired Todd Haley as their new head coach this year. Haley was the receivers coach in Chicago during Wade's rookie season in 2003. "He liked what coach Haley was building in KC," Stanley said. "In a lot of ways, it's similar to what he came to in Minnesota, with a different architect." Stanley declined to identify what other team was in the mix for Wade's services, saying only that it was a "high-profile" team. That is believed to be the Indianapolis Colts, who are ...

Chiefs aren't shedding any light on Cassel's status

Matt Cassel doesn't know whether he'll be healthy enough to be the Chiefs' starting quarterback Sunday, but he was at least healthy enough to answer questions Thursday about his sprained left knee - and what that means for his immediate future. In the time normally set aside for the starting quarterback's news conference, Cassel said he was making progress since suffering the injury early in the Chiefs' third preseason game. He has participated in practices this week. But in individual drills on Thursday, Cassel still appeared to run with a limp. "I wouldn't be out there if I didn't feel up for the challenge," Cassel said. "It's up to the trainers to say whether or not I'm ready to go, ...

Jets looking to make trade for wide receiver with Brandon Marshall, Dwanye Bowe on radar
Comment

New York Daily News
"
The Jets are known for making deals in August - remember some guy named Favre? - and they're thinking trade once again. They're exploring the wide-receiver market and have held preliminary discussions with a few teams, according to NFL sources. Although he's not officially on the trading block, the biggest name on the Jets' radar is the Broncos' Brandon Marshall, who has issued a pay me-or-trade me demand. The Broncos reportedly have no interest in trading Marshall, 25, one of the top young receivers in the league, but they also said the same thing about quarterback Jay Cutler - and now he's playing for the Bears. Because of off-the-field issues, a surgically repaired hip and enormous ...

Matt Cassel, a career backup in college and in the pros, parlayed a great 2008 season into a lucrative franchise tag. Now, he's locked himself into a deal to be the long-term quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. Cassel and the Chiefs worked out a six-year deal that will pay him in excess of $10 million a season, according to a source. The contract will keep Cassel with the Chiefs until 2014. The deal is for $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed, according to a source. He's going to make $40.5 million in the first three years of his contract. Cassel was designated as the New England Patriots' franchise player in February and signed a one-year deal that paid him $14.561 million. He was ...

Mike Brown could find some familiar faces to work with this season, but they won't be at Halas Hall. The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in the veteran safety for a visit today, according to a league source, in a move that would reunite him with first-year head coach Todd Haley, who was the Bears' receivers coach from 2001 to 2003. The Bears let Brown's contract expire, and he has been a free agent for three months. Brown told another source he is motivated to prove he remains a starting-caliber player. His injury history includes a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the season opener at San Diego in 2007. Brown, 31, played his final game for the Bears on Dec. 22 against Green Bay before ...

Is IR system in line for a change?
Comment
May 21
Boston Globe
"
When the NFL adopted its system for placing players on season-ending injured reserve, the main issue was stashing. Teams had long been allowed to place players on injured reserve and bring them back later in the season. But some felt that clubs were circumventing the rule by placing players who weren't truly injured on IR, opening a roster spot for someone else. Thus, a competitive advantage was scored. Colts president Bill Polian remembers high-profile coaches and personnel executives, such as Don Shula and Jim Finks, pushing for a change to combat stashing, and it finally came in 1993, when the league made two significant adjustments. At that time, players placed on injured reserve would ...

The shakeup of the Chiefs' scouting department continued with the firing of vice president Bill Kuharich, who was responsible for their pro and college scouting. Kuharich joined the Chiefs in 2000 as their pro personnel director. He was given oversight of the draft three years ago when the Chiefs hired Herm Edwards as their head coach. The Chiefs on Monday fired most members of their college scouting department, including director Chuck Cook. When he was hired in January, general manager Scott Pioli was given wide latitude to create a personnel team around him, and he used it. Kuharich, Cook and many of the Chiefs' former scouts were well-respected around the league. "When there's a change ...

Tony Gonzalez said goodbye to Kansas City on Tuesday, but the legendary tight end said he's merely on loan to the Atlanta Falcons. The 10-time Pro Bowler met with reporters Tuesday morning in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, saying that he might be going to Atlanta now after last week's trade, but Gonzalez insisted that he'll someday retire as a Chief. Gonzalez was traded to the Falcons last Thursday for a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft. It ended the 33-year-old's 12-year affiliation with Kansas City, which traded up to draft him as a 21-year-old in 1997. He has since broken every major tight end receiving record, and former Chiefs president ...

The Kansas City Chiefs and QB Matt Cassel have reached an agreement on a new six-year deal, NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reports. Complete financial details weren't immediately known, but the deal will include $36 million in guaranteed money. That's $5.7 million less than Matthew Stafford, who hasn't taken an NFL snap, will receive in guaranteed money from the Detroit Lions as the No. 1 draft pick. Cassel led the New England Patriots to an 11-5 record in 2008 after Tom Brady was lost for the season in the opener. Cassel completed 327 of 516 passes for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Cassel and then traded him to the Chiefs, ...
