Browns Trade Rumors

Browns would welcome LeBron
"Last season, Cavaliers star LeBron James played out his football fantasies in an insurance commercial that had him clad in a No. 23 Browns jersey. Members of the struggling Browns are now willing to make that a reality. ''I think he should come on down,'' Browns coach Eric Mangini said Wednesday. ''I know he's pretty busy right now, but if he wants to give it a shot . . . the guy's gifted, gifted athletically, he's competitive, he's tough. I'm sure whatever he applied himself to, he'd probably be good in baseball, or soccer or or swimming. The guy's a freak athletically.'' After watching the Browns fall 16-0 to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, James suggested he could help ..."
Shaun Rogers won't confirm or deny interest in Lions
"Shaun Rogers returns to Detroit on Sunday with the Browns. But does the Pro Bowl defensive tackle wish he could play for the Lions again -- not against them -- even though he wanted out two years ago? That was the word in August. After former Browns defensive tackle Shaun Smith signed with the Lions, he said Rogers had spoken highly of the guys in the locker room and the staff at team headquarters in Allen Park. "He wishes he could come back here now," said Smith, who was cut Sept. 5. "He misses it. Come on. You've been here your whole career, and you see the talent they're bringing in." So is it true? Rogers rarely spoke to Detroit reporters as a Lion, at least toward the end of his ..."
Brady Quinn still struggling to move on; QB is fined for hit, apologizes yet again
"Brady Quinn reported to work Wednesday with the image of his illegal hit on Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs still in his mind and a letter from the NFL reminding him of it. The league fined Quinn for the hit on Suggs, which came after he threw an interception to cornerback Chris Carr in the 16-0 loss to Baltimore on Monday night. Suggs may miss several games with an injury to his right knee. ESPN.com reported the fine was $10,000. The hit and injury to Suggs was the lowest point of what may have been the worst game of Quinn's playing career at any level. In the five NFL games Quinn has started and finished, Monday night's produced lows in completions (13), passing yards (99) and passer ..."
Browns coach Eric Mangini to LeBron James: Come on down
"Browns coach Eric Mangini was delighted to hear that Cavs superstar LeBron James thinks he could help the Browns' woeful offense. "I think he should come on down,'' said Mangini with a smile. "I know he's pretty busy right now, but if he wants to give it a shot, the guy's gifted, gifted athletically. He's competitive. He's tough. I'm sure whatever he applied himself to, he'd probably be good in baseball, or soccer or swimming. The guy's a freak athletically.'' Responding to a question about the Monday Night Football crew saying he'd be a great NFL tight end and has the "best offense in the city of Cleveland,'' James said, "If I put all my time and commitment into it, if I dedicated myself ..."
Jim Brown says Browns owner Randy Lerner met Tuesday with a 'great football mind'
"Browns owner Randy Lerner could be stepping up his efforts to land a new head of football operations. At a luncheon Tuesday, Jim Brown, who holds the title of executive adviser with the club, said Lerner was interviewing somebody to turn around the Browns' fortunes. "At this moment, right now Randy Lerner is meeting with one of the great football minds in this country," Brown said in remarks prior to and during the luncheon. "And if things work out, that person will come in to run the football side of the Browns." Brown would not disclose who it was. When somebody asked if it was Mike Holmgren, Brown responded coyly, "You said it . . . and I heard it." Brown made his remarks at a ..."
Cleveland Browns' Jamal Lewis and Dave Zastudil questionable for Ravens game
"Running back Jamal Lewis and punter Dave Zastudil are among eight Browns who are questionable for Monday night's game against the Ravens. Both were limited in practice on Saturday, a session that was closed to the media. On Friday, the Browns worked out punters after practice in the event Zastudil can't go. Leading the NFL with 25 punts inside the 20, Zastudil has been one of the lone bright spots for the Browns this season. He was also named Special Teams Player of the Week after the Buffalo game Oct. 11, during which he landed seven of nine punts inside the 20 and grossed 42.9 yards. Lewis could be playing in his last game against his former team and his mentor Ray Lewis, who thinks he ..."
Brady Quinn named starter against Ravens
"With eight games to go and careers possibly hinging on their outcomes, Browns coach Eric Mangini is turning his historically bad offense over to Brady Quinn again. Quinn, who was demoted after the first 2 1/2 games, officially was given the job to restart the Browns' second half of the season Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. How long will he last this time? "With any of these decisions, I'm not looking to change," Mangini said. "That's never the intention." Quinn was staggered by his first benching at any level of football in September. But he said he won't be looking over his shoulder this time. "Why should there be a concern?" he said. "I've been through it before. I ..."
Brady Quinn will start MNF vs. Baltimore Ravens
"Browns coach Eric Mangini today named Brady Quinn the starting quarterback for Monday night's game against the Ravens at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Quinn replaces Derek Anderson, who went 1-4 in his five starts. "He's had good weeks of practice,'' said Mangini. "He's worked hard since the first transition was made. I look forward to him taking advantage of this opportunity and helping us improve.'' Quinn went 0-3 in his three starts, getting pulled at halftime of the 34-3 loss to the Ravens in Week 3."
Browns' Brady Quinn likely to start Monday
"This Browns quarterback carousel has Brady Quinn seeing purple. Quinn started against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 and was benched after falling behind, 20-0, in the first half. Now Quinn is expected to be exhumed as the starter when the Ravens come to Cleveland Browns Stadium on Monday night. The official word should come Wednesday from coach Eric Mangini. ESPN.com reported two unidentified sources said Quinn "likely" will be Mangini's choice to kick off the rest of the season for the 1-7 Browns. This should be welcome news to the Ravens. After they moved to 3-0 by dispatching the Browns, 34-3, the Ravens lost four of their next five games to hit their halfway mark at 4-4. Two of those ..."
Sources: Browns to go with Quinn
"The Browns are not making an official announcement regarding their quarterback situation until Wednesday. But two sources said the team is expected to name Brady Quinn the starting quarterback for Monday night's game at Baltimore against the Ravens. Quinn started Cleveland's first three games before Mangini switched to Anderson for the fourth game against the Cincinnati Bengals."
Mangini says decision nearly made, but he won't reveal Cleveland Browns QB
"Like Vikings coach Brad Childress and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis before him, Ravens coach John Harbaugh will have to sweat it out for a few days before finding out who the Browns' starting quarterback is going to be next Monday night. Eric Mangini, still looking for any shred of a competitive advantage, said Monday he'll wait until Wednesday to announce his starting quarterback for the rematch against the Ravens at the stadium. "I know where I'm headed, but we'll talk about that on Wednesday," he said. "I haven't sat down with the quarterbacks about it yet, so that's part of it. We'll talk about that in conjunction with our work on the Ravens." Brady Quinn, who might get the chance to ..."
As rumors keep percolating, pressure grows on the Browns'
"There are aisles and aisles of self-help books these days, but not one titled "How to Attract a Top Executive to Your Company While Trying to Discredit The One You Just Canned." The forced departure of George Kokinis is getting uglier by the day. The latest is an ESPN report that the Browns were concerned enough about Kokinis' estrangement from others in Browns headquarters that they ordered him into counseling. What kind of counseling? Did he go? Sorry, no details. So it just sits there -- Kokinis cast as a reclusive wreck -- without any context. The source of that story? We may never know. What we do know is the Browns seem to be pursuing a "just cause" case against Kokinis while ..."
Source: Holmgren on Browns' wish list
"One of the first people Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner will contact to run his team, if he hasn't contacted him already, is former Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren, according to a team source. Holmgren is itching to return to football and the opportunity he would have in Cleveland would be an attractive one. Lerner is looking for someone to perform for the Browns the same role that vice president of football operations Bill Parcells performs for the Dolphins. The job, for the time being, is Holmgren's to lose. If Holmgren were to take it -- and there are some people who think he still would prefer to coach -- he would be returning to the Midwest, where he built his ..."
Browns coach Eric Mangini will help pick new general manager
"Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini said today he'll have input into the hiring of the team's new general manager. Mangini's first hand-picked general manager, George Kokinis, parted ways with the Browns on Monday, with no word from either side on whether he was fired or resigned. "Yeah, Randy and I talk a lot, so I'm sure we'll be very engaged in that (decision),'' said Mangini. Asked if it would hard to add a GM midway through the NFL season, he said, "we're just going through the process, so I'm not sure how that will all play out. We have to really see what's there, see what's available." He indicated that the Browns have strong enough pro and college departments to function without a ..."
Browns owner Randy Lerner says Mangini's job safe for now
"Randy Lerner admitted Sunday that he's "sick about" the 1-7 Browns -- but not enough to fire coach Eric Mangini during the upcoming bye week. When asked specifically if he'd make a coaching change, the Browns owner said no. "I think I should evaluate me," he said, only half-jokingly. He indicated that he wasn't ready to give up on Mangini despite being obviously distraught about the state of the team. But he did strongly indicate that it's time for him to bring in a football authority who can help straighten out this mess. "There's absolutely no question about that," he said. "The highest priority that I have is a strong, credible, serious leader within the building to guide decisions in a ..."
Edwards charged in Cleveland assault
"Braylon Edwards' troubles have not simply disappeared since he was traded to the Jets. The receiver was charged with assault yesterday for his alleged involvement in a fight outside a Cleveland bar in the early morning hours on Oct. 5. Edwards, who was shipped to the Jets from the Browns just days after the incident, faces a misdemeanor after being accused of punching promoter -- and friend of LeBron James -- Edward Givens outside of a Cleveland club. James called Edwards' actions "childish." Edwards caught one pass for 14 yards in the Jets' 38-0 win over the Raiders on Sunday in Oakland. He faces up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail if convicted, although a jail stay would be ..."
Mangini to stick with Anderson
"The ''Brady'' chants started in the second quarter, just after Browns rookie receiver Brian Robiskie turned inside and quarterback Derek Anderson threw outside, much to the delight of Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson, who intercepted the pass. But Browns coach Eric Mangini refused to yank Anderson in the 31-3 loss Sunday to the Packers, and the disappointed crowd in Cleveland Browns Stadium gave up the Brady Quinn quest and went home early. As dismal as Anderson's numbers were for the third consecutive week, Mangini said Monday that he was sticking with Anderson for the game Sunday against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. ''I think he gives us the best chance right now to ..."
Browns are at the center of the NFL trade universe
"Will the Browns add to their stockpile of picks in the 2010 draft by swinging another deal before today's 4 o'clock NFL trade deadline? The prominent names mentioned in rumors have been quarterback Brady Quinn, specialist Josh Cribbs and defensive end Corey Williams. Not-so-prominent rumors have posed trade possibilities involving linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, nose tackle Shaun Rogers, and, yes, even left tackle Joe Thomas. Why are the Browns the subject of so many rumors? That's obvious. Coach Eric Mangini has not been shy about pulling the trigger on trades to rid his locker room of players not with his program. Also, word spread quickly after Mangini assessed his inherited roster in ..."
Coach warms to Anderson; Quinn out in cold
"Browns quarterback Brady Quinn might still be on the roster when the trading deadline passes at 4 p.m. today, but it doesn't mean he'll be playing anytime soon regardless of how bad the offense has performed. Whenever the subject of Quinn replacing Derek Anderson is broached, coach Eric Mangini crushes it like a grape. Following Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Steelers, Mangini said, "I'm not looking to make a move [at quarterback], no." So, not only will Quinn be stuck in Cleveland even though he'd most likely welcome a trade, he'll be stuck on the bench for the foreseeable future. Hey, if you can't get playing time despite a starter who has tumbled to last in the NFL with a 41.7 rating - ..."
Nothing 'imminent' on trade deadline front, says Mangini
"Eric Mangini didn't rule out a trade by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline. There's been speculation that the Browns might move defensive end Corey Williams. Also, the Jets need a nose tackle now that Kris Jenkins is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament -- and it wouldn't be surprising if they at least inquired about Shaun Rogers. The Jets acquired Mark Sanchez and Braylon Edwards thanks to trades with the Browns, so why not keep going back to the well? Rogers asked to be released in the off-season rather than have the Browns pay his $6 million signing bonus after two perceived slights by Mangini. But they patched things up and he apparently has been buying into the program. ..."
Parker plays, but Mendenhall gets starting nod
"Willie Parker will play, as expected, today against the Browns but Rashard Mendenhall will start at running back for the Steelers. The Steelers will have a new fullback as well with David Johnson getting the call over Carey Davis, who is inactive for the 1 p.m. game. In addition to Parker, strong safety Troy Polalamu will play for the first time since he sprained his left knee in the Steelers' season opener on Sept. 10. Joining Davis on the Steelers inactives list are wide receiver Limas Sweed, linebacker Andre Frazier, who is nursing a thigh injury, cornerback Keenan Lewis, guard Kraig Urbik, defensive end Sunny Harris, offensive tackle Tony Hills and quarterback Dennis Dixon."
Agent for Josh Cribbs says pay him or trade him
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday he has "no interest in moving Josh Cribbs." In response, Cribbs' agent J.R. Rickert said, "It is unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back. They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate.'' Browns kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs said Friday, "I have not asked for a trade.'' He added that he's letting his agent handle the business side of things while he focuses on Pittsburgh. He said it "weighs' on my mind'' off the field, but on the field he'll be the same Josh Cribbs. "I'm not going to play bad because I want a new contract.'' So what ..."
Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has no interest in trading Josh Cribbs
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday he has "no interest in moving Josh Cribbs." In response, Cribbs' agent J.R. Rickert said, "It is unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back. They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate.'' Rickert made it clear that he and Cribbs want the extension -- or a chance to go somewhere else. A source told the Plain Dealer on Thursday that Cribbs would welcome a trade if they won't re-do the deal, which runs through 2012. At least five teams have expressed interest in trading for Cribbs, including Miami, Oakland, Jacksonville and San Francisco, according ..."
Browns' Josh Cribbs reportedly would like trade if new deal can't be reached
"Browns receiver Josh Cribbs wants to remain a Brown for the rest of his career, but if the team is unwilling to extend his contract, he'd welcome trade, a source close to the situation said. Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012. He has made it clear since the off-season that he wants a new deal in the form of a contract extension. In fact, he considered holding out at the beginning of the season. The Browns are believed to be unwilling to trade Cribbs before Tuesday's deadline, a source said. They prefer to hang onto him and perhaps work out a deal in the future. Cribbs is the prototypical player for coach Eric Mangini, one who ..."
Browns' Quinn seeks new home, not team
"Brady Quinn made it clear that he's downsizing his living quarters but not his expectations. "I think I'm good enough to play in this league," he said. He confirmed his sprawling home in Avon Lake has been put up for sale, but maintained it has nothing to do with his demotion, the upcoming NFL trade deadline or his unhappiness about the path his career has taken in his third season. "I'm a guy who doesn't want to continue driving 30 minutes to the facility every day," Quinn said. "I'm a bachelor who lives in a house that has maybe too much upkeep for me. There's other reasons [to sell] outside of what everyone likes to believe." Would he welcome a trade? "It's tough to put out a ..."
Eric Mangini: 'We're not looking to move Brady Quinn'
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said during his press conference this morning, "We're not looking to move Brady Quinn.'' He said he's talked to Quinn and "He's focused on Pittsburgh.'' Mangini also said, "We get calls all the time that we listen to, but Brady is a Cleveland Brown and it's not anything we're looking to do.'' The question to Mangini about Quinn's status was prompted by growing speculation that Quinn would like to go somewhere where he can start. The trading deadline is next Tuesday at 4 p.m. Quinn's house was put up for sale on Tuesday, fueling speculation that he might be on the move."
Quinn's home for sale
"Brady Quinn's home in Avon Lake was listed for sale on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The deposed Browns quarterback feels his time with the team is nearing an end. Since being replaced by Derek Anderson, Quinn has been at odds with coach Eric Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, said a source. Quinn's practice reps have dried up, and he has challenged Mangini about his demotion after 2½ games as the Browns' starting quarterback. Quinn is missing out on about $11 million in salary escalators in his contract by not being on the field for 70 percent of the snaps this season. He is signed through 2011. The source said Quinn was weighing whether to formally ask the team ..."
Coach 'comfortable' with Davis issue
"Coach Eric Mangini seemed confi dent Monday that the Browns will come out OK after the NFL completes its investigation into the James Davis injury situation. The NFL is investigating a report on espn.com that the rookie running back suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder two weeks ago during a post-practice "opportunity period" when he was not wearing pads. The linebacker who reportedly "trucked" him was wearing pads, according to the site. Davis will undergo surgery this week by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, according to the site. He's on injured reserve for the entire season. The NFL Players Association called the situation "an outrage" and may file a grievance, ESPN's Adam Schefter ..."
With NFL trade deadline approaching, are Cleveland Browns dangling Brady Quinn?
"Tracy Boulian/The Plain DealerWith the NFL trading deadline a week away, is it possible that Brady Quinn's final start for the Cleveland Browns was a struggling half of work in a lopsided loss to Baltimore last month?BEREA, Ohio -- Could Brady Quinn be the next first-round pick to go? With the trading deadline looming Oct. 20, it wouldn't be surprising if Quinn went the way of Braylon Edwards and was dealt to another team. Browns coach Eric Mangini made it clear Monday that he's sticking with Derek Anderson despite a 2-of-17 performance for 23 yards, one interception and a 15.1 rating against Buffalo. "D.A. will continue to start," said Mangini, in no uncertain terms. That means Quinn ..."
With NFL trade deadline approaching, is Brady Quinn being dangled by Cleveland Browns?
"Could Brady Quinn be the next first-round pick to go? With the trading deadline looming Oct. 20, it wouldn't be surprising if Quinn went the way of Braylon Edwards and was dealt to another team. Browns coach Eric Mangini made it clear Monday that he's sticking with Derek Anderson despite a 2-of-17 performance for 23 yards, one interception and a 15.1 rating against Buffalo. "D.A. will continue to start," said Mangini, in no uncertain terms. That means Quinn is stuck on the bench, where he's watching $11 million slip away. This year was the last chance for Quinn to hit the escalators in his contract that would've earned him an additional $11 million -- on top of the $9.2 million over ..."
Browns rookie hurt minus pads
"Two Thursdays ago, Browns rookie running back James Davis aggravated a shoulder injury and suffered a torn labrum that now will require surgery in Alabama this week with Dr. James Andrews. How Davis was injured is the question swirling around the league. Two witnesses to the incident from within the Browns organization said Davis injured his shoulder in a post-practice drill in which he was not wearing pads and the linebacker that plowed into him was. Three other NFL sources corroborated the witnesses' account. A Browns spokesman said Saturday it is not true. Once he denied the events, the sources were contacted Saturday for a second time -- some for a third or fourth -- and asked about ..."
Cleveland Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and kicker Phil Dawson doubtful
"Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and kicker Phil Dawson sat out today's practice with injuries and are doubtful for Sunday's game in Buffalo. Jackson (hamstring) sat out both Thursday and Friday, and Dawson (right calf), who hasn't been seen in Berea for several weeks, missed the entire week. Billy Cundiff will most likely replace Dawson for the third straight week and rookie linebacker David Veikune could start in place of Jackson."
Jets trade for star Browns receiver Braylon Edwards
"Desperate to find a proven starter to pair with Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets have traded for disgruntled Browns WR Braylon Edwards, the Daily News confirmed Wednesday morning. The Jets dealt WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik and undisclosed draft choices to the Browns in the deal. Once he learns the offense, Edwards will start with Cotchery. Edwards, a first-round pick, is regarded as an elite talent, but he has been involved in a series of off-the-field incidents and wore out his welcome in Cleveland. His contract expires after this season, but he may not be an unrestricted free agent. It depends on the CBA. If there's no salary cap in 2010, Edwards will be a restricted free agent."
Cleveland City Police, NFL investigating bar incident involving Browns receiver Braylon Edwards
"The Monday morning incident involving Browns receiver Braylon Edwards has prompted investigations by Cleveland police and the National Football League. Chief City Prosecutor Victor Perez has asked the Cleveland Police Department to gather witness statements and additional facts surrounding the incident at the View Ultralounge & Nightclub on Prospect Avenue, said police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho. Off-duty officers were working security at the club, Stacho added. Entertainment promoter Edward Givens has accused Edwards of punching him about 2:30 a.m. outside the club, witnesses said. Police don't typically investigate simple assaults, and victims must file complaints with the city ..."
Cleveland man accuses Browns Braylon Edwards of assault
"A-28-year-old Cleveland man accused Browns receiver Braylon Edwards of assaulting him early today at View Ultralounge & Nightclub. Edward Givens said the incident took place outside of View nightclub at 618 Prospect Ave. at about 2:30 a.m. Givens said he went to Lutheran Hospital this morning because he suffered a black eye and a cut. He said he also has a headache. The suspect's name on the police report is redacted. But multiple sources and the victim say the suspect is Edwards. A police report gives these details: Givens was talking to the suspect outside the club when the suspect started an argument. The suspect then punched Givens with a closed first on the left side of his face. ..."
Cleveland Browns' James Davis on injured reserve for season
"The Browns will have to wait until next season to see if rookie running back James Davis can live up to his preseason hype. Davis, who was injured in the first regular season game, was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a shoulder injury and will miss the rest of the season. It doesn't help matters that starting running back Jamal Lewis is doubtful for tomorrow's game against the Bengals with a hamstring injury. To replace Davis, the Browns signed first-year back Chris Jennings off their practice squad. Jennings was signed by the Browns on August 18, 2009 and rushed for 63 yards on 18 carries in three preseason games. He also caught seven passes for 69 yards. Davis, the sixth-round ..."
Cleveland Browns' Brandon McDonald benched for Sunday's game against Cincinnati Bengals
"Cleveland Browns starting cornerback Brandon McDonald has been benched for Sunday's game against the Bengals, according to a league source who confirmed a report on theobr.com. The site also reported that safety Mike Adams will start in place of McDonald, but the source could not immediately confirm that. It is not yet known what role McDonald will play in the nickel or dime, if any. Adams, asked about it in the locker room on Friday, said talk of him starting is just a rumor. But he did split time with Brodney Pool at safety last week in Baltimore, and admitted it was good to get the extra time. He also recovered a fourth-quarter fumble. "It's always good to get out there and play a ..."
Lewis and Dawson might miss Bengals game, too
"The Browns might have to play their second straight division game without running back Jamal Lewis or kicker Phil Dawson. Both were idle again Wednesday after missing Sunday's game in Baltimore -- Lewis with a hamstring injury and Dawson with a right calf injury. In addition, right guard Floyd Womack (ankle) and starting left defensive end Kenyon Coleman (groin) did not participate. "I'm just doing everything the trainers are asking me to do," Coleman said. "I'm trying to get better, day to day, and we'll see how it goes." He said he hurt it early in the Denver game, "but I tried not to make it obvious. At least I did let the coach know." In Lewis' absence, Jerome Harrison was one of ..."
Eric Mangini will wait until Wednesday to name starting quarterback
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said he'll wait until Wednesday to announce his starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mangini, speaking today at his weekly press conference, said he liked the way Derek Anderson moved the ball after relieving starter Brady Quinn on Sunday in Baltimore, including a 22-yard pass to Mike Furrey on third-and-16, but said that he can't throw interceptions and has to learn to sometimes learn to throw the ball away."
Browns might be without Phil Dawson, Jamal Lewis
"The Browns might have to face the Ravens Sunday without two of their best offensive weapons: running back Jamal Lewis and kicker Phil Dawson. Lewis is doubtful to face his former team with a hamstring injury suffered last week in Denver, meaning there's only a 25 percent chance he'll play. He hasn't practiced all week, including Friday's final full workout before the game. If he can't go, he'll be replaced by the combination of Jerome Harrison and rookie James Davis. Dawson was added to the injury report on Friday as questionable with a right calf injury, meaning there's a 50-50 chance he'll play. He was limited in practice and afterward the Browns worked out four free-agents kickers, ..."
Harrison takes reps, Lewis nurses injury
"Jamal Lewis missed his second day of practice with a hamstring injury on Thursday. In his place, Jerome Harrison took reps with the first team. Harrison, who missed most of preseason with a knee injury, was not on the Browns' injury report. James Davis (shoulder) had full participation for the second day in a row. Lewis has rushed for 100 yards or more against 18 teams in his nine NFL seasons. Baltimore, his former team, is not one of them. Since joining the Browns, Lewis has a high of 92 yards rushing against the Ravens. In four meetings, he has averaged 3.4 yards a rush, gaining 261 yards in 76 attempts. You have to wonder if this could be Lewis' last visit to Baltimore wearing a ..."
Cleveland Browns' Jamal Lewis idle with hamstring injury
"Browns running back Jamal Lewis sat out Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury apparently suffered in the Broncos game. His status for the Ravens game Sunday will not be known until Friday. The Browns need a healthy Lewis go against his former team, which is first in the NFL in run defense. Since 2007, the Browns are 11-3 in games when Lewis has 20 or more carries. In four games against the Ravens, he has 261 yards on 76 carries (3.4 average). On the plus side for the Browns, rookie running back James Davis was back in practice full-go after being inactive last week with a shoulder injury. Running back Jerome Harrison (knee) did not appear on the injury report this week."
Quinn beats out Derek Anderson
"Brady Quinn beat out Derek Anderson for the Browns' starting quarterback job and will start Sunday's opener against the Vikings, an NFL source told The Plain Dealer on Wednesday. Quinn, who went 1-2 as a starter last season before succumbing to a broken right index finger, was told Tuesday night by coach Eric Mangini that he won the job, but continued to go along with the charade when he met with reporters Wednesday. "He hasn't said anything to us yet," Quinn said straight-faced. "He talked to us about it, but hasn't told us anything about a final decision for us." Anderson, who wasn't as chipper Wednesday as he's been during preseason, might have inadvertently tipped his hand during his ..."
Mangini tells QBs, but no one else, who will start
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said this morning that he informed Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson Tuesday night which of them won the quarterback competition to be the starter for Sunday's opener against the Minnesota Vikings. He said they both took the news exactly as he had anticipated, with professionalism. He said he has not yet told the rest of the team, "but I think they'll be able to figure it out.'' The players will know the starter when the team lines up for 11-on-11 drills in practice this morning, which begins at 11:30 a.m. The practice is open to the media for the first 30 minutes, but only for individual and position drills."
Browns coach Eric Mangini will keep his starting quarterback a secret
"Browns coach Eric Mangini said Monday he's made his decision on a starting quarterback, but will keep his identity internal and not reveal it to the Vikings, Sunday's season opening opponent. He said he will tell the two quarterbacks in the "near future'' in separate conversations with each of them. He said he'll explain to them why and how the decision was made. He said as a defensive coordinator, it's difficult to prepare for an offense when the quarterback is unknown."
RB Jamal Lewis on the chopping block?
"Could Browns running back Jamal Lewis be cut Saturday when the Browns trim their roster to 53? League sources said rumblings began a couple of days ago that Lewis, who turned 30 last week, could be one of the dozen players the Browns let go, and espn.com's Adam Schefter Friday put Lewis at the top of his list of big-name players on the bubble. Nationalfootballpost.com's Mike Lombardi also speculated Lewis will be cut. Question is, would the Browns release a player after giving him a $3.5 million roster bonus in March? Would they put the ball in the hands of rookie running back James Davis? And what about Jerome Harrison, still recovering from a left knee injury? "Nobody has told us ..."
Eric Mangini says quarterback competition remains close
"Browns coach Eric Mangini de scribed the quarterback competition between Derek Ander son and Brady Quinn as "very close" Monday, but said one of the two will jump out to the lead within the next two weeks. "I have experience before with this a couple of different times, and I feel that it will probably follow the same path," Mangini said. "If it doesn't, and it's close, then I'll make the decision - and that decision will be based on what I feel will give us the best chance to win." Mangini declined again to name his starter for Saturday night's dress-rehearsal game against the Tennessee Titans, saying, "I'll let you know at the end of the week, and we'll go from there." He was also ..."
