Denver Nuggets Trade Rumors

Carmelo Anthony's return still questionable for Dallas game
"Carmelo Anthony was again non-committal on Monday afternoon when asked if he would play on Tuesday against Dallas. But the Nuggets star said he continues to improve in coming back from an ankle injury. "Hopefully I can get back out there tomorrow," Anthony said after practice today in Denver. "It felt good out there today. It's getting better each day. Pretty much I was doing a lot that I could do before I got hurt." Anthony has missed eight straight games with a sprained left ankle, but does appear to be closing in on playing either against Dallas or Thursday against San Antonio."
Nuggets had eyes for Jazz's Williams
"At the NBA All-Star Game next weekend, George Karl will coach Deron Williams and Carmelo Anthony. That could have been an everyday occurrence if fate hadn't detoured. The Nuggets coach said Saturday that back in 2005, Denver had a trade on the table with Atlanta, which had the No. 2 pick in the draft. The plan was for the Nuggets to draft Williams, now an all-star for the Jazz. "I don't know why we didn't do it or what happened, but there's no question that I thought he'd be a great player," Karl said. "I like him because his passion and energy for the game is contagious. It's fun to watch and it's difficult to play against." Atlanta ultimately kept that pick and selected Marvin Williams. ..."
Melo says that he "probably" won't play tonight
"Meanwhile, Denver all-star Anthony missed his sixth straight game because of a left ankle injury. Anthony fully participated in a Friday morning shootaround, but afterward said he wouldn't play that evening and "probably" won't play tonight against Utah."
Carmelo Anthony hopes to be ready for Wednesday
"Anthony again, didn't play because of a sprained left ankle, his fifth straight game out of the lineup. "It has gotten a lot better, man," Anthony said after the game. "I was in for three hours today, shooting, running, doing some drills.""
Nuggets brass split on what to do with J.R. Smith
"George Karl seldom takes a pass on a basketball question, but he took a pass on this one. Why did the Nuggets decide not to suspend J.R. Smith for sulking on the bench and generally making a show of his unhappiness over playing only 12 minutes in his team's sixth straight victory Saturday night? "I was just a part of the process," Karl said. "I would prefer to have you get that from somebody else." "Who would you suggest?" I asked. "Any of the people above me," Karl said. As you may know, most of the people above Karl on the Nuggets' organizational chart are exceedingly bashful about speaking with the media, which is why it is generally left to the coach to take all the questions. But vice ..."
Coach Karl doesn't foresee Nuggets spending "huge dollars" for another player
"On the possibility of adding a player to the Nuggets' roster before the NBA's Feb. 18 trade deadline, coach George Karl said Wednesday, "Financially, we're not going to add huge dollars, I don't think." There is debate about whether the Nuggets should make a huge splash and trade seasoned players for a big name or try to add a big reserve, be it Jeff Foster or Brendan Haywood, or someone of that caliber. "It would probably have to be a veteran older guy who some nights wouldn't play at all, another night might play 30 minutes," Karl said. Asked if what he has now on his roster is enough to win the Western Conference, Karl said: "Every coach wants a little more. If we play San Antonio, ..."
Karl, Nuggets appear to be closeron a contract extension
"After negotiations Thursday, it appears the Nuggets are closer to reaching an agreement with coach George Karl about a contract extension, though a deal is not yet official. Bret Adams, an attorney representing the Nuggets' coach, met with officials from Kroenke Sports Enterprises and afterward said: "It's a complicated discussion and process because of the potential lockout (after 2010-11). It's a different economic environment. All of that has added a complexity to contract negotiations that simply hasn't been there before. "But both parties are professionally and diligently working to keeping George Karl in Denver." Karl repeatedly has said he wants to stay in Denver. Karl is under ..."
Nuggets' Lawson a game-time decision, Karl says
"Nuggets coach George Karl couldn't gauge from this morning's shootaround whether Ty Lawson would play tonight, and the coach said Lawson will go through an intense workout around 5:30 tonight to determine if his left ankle is sturdy enough to play against Orlando. Lawson is Denver's top reserve point guard but has missed the past three games due to the ankle sprain."
Melo, Lawson likely to play tonight
"Potential all-star starter Carmelo Anthony returned to Sacramento, the site of his last game played. But Melo missed his fifth straight game since banging knees with Sacramento's Donte Greene on Dec. 28. Anthony (bruised right knee) will likely return Monday against Minnesota. Same for rookie guard Ty Lawson (sprained left ankle), who missed his second straight game. "It's going to be Monday — it's gotten a lot better the last couple of games," Lawson said. On Friday night in the win over Cleveland, Karl complimented the unpredictable Smith for his "huge" performances down the stretch. Indeed, Smith hit a big 3 and played some defense. But that overshadowed the fact he was 3-for-10 from ..."
Nuggets' Billups to miss game vs. Warriors, but Anthony might play
"Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups will miss at least one more game because of a strained left groin that has sidelined him for seven of the past eight games. Forward Carmelo Anthony (bruised right knee) hopes to be back tonight against Golden State. In those eight games, the Nuggets are just 2-6. Billups' importance becomes clearer by the day because of how the team struggles when he's out. Anthony, who is second in the NBA in scoring, averaging 30.0 points per game, is listed as day to day."
Brandon Roy shines through shoulder injury
"On Friday night at the Rose Garden, Roy played himself. After sitting out Wednesday's game with a strained left shoulder, Roy looked plenty fit in leading Portland past Denver 107-96 in a Christmas night showdown on ESPN. Wearing a black harness to protect the shoulder, Roy made a career-high 16 field goals en route to a 41-point showing as the Blazers (20-12) won their fourth straight game and moved within a game of the Northwest Division-leading Nuggets (20-10). "We got a huge win," the two-time all-star guard said. "This was a division game we really needed." It was a saucy matchup between two of the NBA's young stars – Roy and Denver's Carmelo Anthony – in the finale of five nationally ..."
Nuggets offer Karl contract extension
"Steps are being made for the Nuggets to lock down coach George Karl for the next three years. Karl has been offered a contract extension worth around $11 million, a source confirmed this morning. Karl, who is 244-152 with the Nuggets, is currently in the last year of his contract. The coach of the Nuggets (19-9) has said he wants to be in Denver for a while. There are still semantics being worked out in the contract, the third contractual year has not yet been guaranteed, sources said."
Billups looks to return Wednesday
"Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups said he doesn't think he will play tonight at New Orleans, where Denver will face the Hornets in a rematch of the first round of the NBA playoffs from last season. Billups injured his groin in Wednesday's win against Houston and is day-to-day heading into Sunday's game at Memphis. Denver coach George Karl pointed to Denver's off days Monday and Tuesday as additional recovery for Billups, suggesting that next Wednesday against Atlanta is likely when his star point guard will return. At Denver's morning shootaround at New Orleans Arena, Karl said point guard Anthony Carter will start tonight because Carter has past experience against Hornets guard Chris ..."
Nuggets' Billups could miss game Friday
"Though Chauncey Billups is listed as day to day with a strained left groin, the Nuggets point guard will likely sit out at least tonight's game against the New Orleans Hornets, and perhaps additional contests. If so, what would the Nuggets do? First, don't be surprised if the Nuggets start Anthony Carter in Billups' place. That way, coach George Karl could keep the continuity of his bench and rotation intact. Rookie Ty Lawson would come off the bench as the reserve point guard, and J.R. Smith would handle the ball as well in his normal sixth-man role. If Karl were a bit paranoid about a lack of scoring from a starting lineup that had Carter and Arron Afflalo in the backcourt, he could go ..."
Nuggets defeat Rockets, lose Billups for "a couple" of games
"Early in the third quarter Wednesday night, Chauncey Billups ambled toward the locker room, untucked his jersey, peered at his parents in the stands and shrugged his shoulders in frustration. Billups suffered a strained left groin in the Nuggets' 111-101 win against Houston, and coach George Karl said his point guard could be out "a couple games." While leaving the Pepsi Center during the fourth quarter, Billups said: "It's hurting, but I'll be all right. I'm going to get an MRI to make sure it's not too bad." The Nuggets should know today the severity of the injury, which Billups suffered in the second quarter. The Nuggets (19-7) play at New Orleans on Friday and at Memphis on Sunday, and ..."
Kenyon Marting Questionable for Saturday
"Suddenly, Kenyon Martin's presence on the court is moving from valuable to indispensable. The Nuggets have been lost without the defensive-minded forward, going 0-3 this season in games where Martin has missed the entire contest. That number stretches to 0-4 when the Nuggets' game at Miami is factored in, a contest that Martin left with a leg bruise after playing just 12 minutes. Martin missed each of the Nuggets last two games – losses at Charlotte and Detroit – with a dislocated pinkie finger. It's not sitting well with Nuggets coach, George Karl, but he isn't too concerned. "I think we have to learn how to win without Kenyon," Karl said. "But the games were not out-of-balance. They were ..."
Nuggets Graham hoping to make most of extra playing time
"For most people, the left pinkie finger's most-important function is typing "A." But Kenyon Martin is an NBA power forward, so it's a bigger deal than for someone trying to type "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar." The thing hurts, which caused Martin to miss Thursday's game, his second straight. "I made some progress over the last couple days - I'm trying to not have any setbacks," Martin said. "It's still sensitive to touch. And you can't really bend it all the way. It's still attached though." Martin is arguably Denver's top defender, and the team will surely need him in the next game, Saturday's matchup against the high-scoring Phoenix Suns. "That's what I'm going to shoot for," Martin said, "but ..."
Nuggets coach Karl focuses on team, not contract
"While the Nuggets probably won't vie for 2010 free agents LeBron James or Dwyane Wade, there's another big-name free agent the Nuggets may well consider: George Karl. The Nuggets coach is under contract until the end of this season. Last summer, Karl asked the Nuggets for what he felt was a fair three-year extension of around $12 million, according to multiple sources, but the team has yet to offer Karl a multiyear deal. A source close to the situation said in the preseason the team offered Karl a one-year extension of $3 million (his current salary, not including incentives), but Karl declined to sign it, hoping for more long-term security in order to stay in Denver. Yahoo Sports first ..."
Without a new contract, Karl faces free agency
"The Denver Nuggets own the Western Conference's second-best record and have emerged as just one of a handful of teams who look like legitimate championship contenders. They also have a coach who might not have a contract in six months. NBA sources say Karl turned down a one-year, $3 million extension over the summer in hopes of getting a longer deal and a raise. Karl is currently being paid a $3 million base salary in the final year of his contract and sources said incentives boosted his total pay to $3.8 million last season. A Nuggets source said the team has had internal discussions about a possible three-year, $12 million extension for Karl, but no offer has been presented. Some ..."
Nuggets cruise in passing lane
"Timberwolves superfan Bill Beise is super annoying. He sits courtside at the Target Center but seldom sits, opting to kneel in his suit and tie, banging rolled-up papers onto the hardwood like an irate coach. But by the fourth quarter Wednesday, Beise was glumly slumped in his seat, as quiet as the Timberwolves' shooting. The Nuggets defeated the defeated Timberwolves 124-111, Denver's second win in two nights against teams on a 13-game losing streak (the other was New Jersey). "We know those teams aren't playing very well," Denver guard Chauncey Billups said, "and we know the most important parts of those games are early in games, taking their confidence away, letting them know - not ..."
MRI on Birdman's knee clear of big damage
"Nuggets forward Chris Andersen underwent an MRI on his right knee Wednesday, and no structural damage was found. He is listed as day-to-day with patella tendinitis. Anderson has been sore, so he underwent the procedure today in Denver. Dr. Steve Traina said the test revealed no structural damage. Guard Anthony Carter is listed as questionable for the Nuggets' game Friday against the Clippers in Los Angeles. A strained left hip kept him out of the past two games. ...Karl said he's starting to settle in with the rotation, both with who is starting and coming off the bench. "Yeah," Karl said. "I think Arron (Afflalo) and Ty have done a great job for guys that we didn't have"
Report: K-Mart has good news MRI
"the MRI on Kenyon Martin's left leg didn't reveal a fracture, and so he is day to day with a bruised left fibula. The injury occurred during Friday's loss at Miami, and Karl then worried that Martin could be out for a couple of weeks. "I feel better today than I did yesterday," Martin said Saturday. "I've broken the fibula twice in my right leg, and that's the way (the injury first) felt. . . . But I can tolerate playing. I'm not worried, man." With the defeat to the Hawks (5-2), Denver lost its annual game in Atlanta for the third straight season, and it finished 5-2 in the seven games without suspended guard J.R. Smith, who returns Tuesday at Chicago."
Melo can't do it by himself, Nuggets lose Martin
"Well into Friday's second quarter, the Nuggets and Heat were knotted in a nice little game — until the Nuggets suddenly went as flat as a Cuban sandwich. It was a deflating performance by the road team, tied at 33-33 with 5:57 left in the second, but down by 28 late in the third. Denver ultimately lost 96-88, and might have lost Kenyon Martin for a little while too. The power forward suffered a lower left leg contusion in the second quarter and did not return to the game. X-rays taken at halftime were inconclusive, and Martin will undergo an MRI today and sit out tonight's game at Atlanta, Denver coach George Karl said. "The feeling I got is, it might be a week or two weeks, but it won't ..."
Joey Graham has near-lock on Nuggets' final roster spot
"Joey Graham is holding out hope of making the Nuggets roster. He shouldn't have to worry. It's all but certain. Graham, 27, has impressed Nuggets coach George Karl so much that Karl has already talked about fitting the 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward in the rotation during J.R. Smith's seven-game suspension when the season starts. Those decisions are still to be determined, but what is clear is how much Karl likes the hard- working, rough-and-tumble Graham."
Kenyon Martin says no to opting out of deal
"Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin has no plans to opt out of his contract at the end of this season. "They could have sent in that paperwork that day (I signed the contract)," Martin said Friday during Nuggets media day. "No, I ain't opting out of nothing. I worked for that (money). I want that." As a result, Martin will make nearly $17 million next season in the last year of his pact. He could have opted out of the deal and become a free agent next summer. He originally signed the seven-year, $92.5 million contract in 2004. Martin is coming off arguably his best season with the Nuggets, bouncing back from two microfracture surgeries to play a pivotal role. He averaged 11.7 points, 6.0 ..."
"Flight" White glad to land with Denver Nuggets
"Suddenly, that Nuggets preseason game against Partizan Belgrade is a little more enticing. The Nuggets have acquired James "Flight" White, a skywalking, YouTube dunking sensation - who might have the versatility to make the team's roster. "Looking at the roster, they have 12 guys now, so I figure that I have a good chance making the team if I go out there and work," White said by phone. On Tuesday, the Nuggets traded the draft rights of Axel Hervelle (who never played for Denver) to Houston for White, who has played in 10 NBA games. But last season, he averaged 25.9 points for Anaheim in the D-League, tying the league high. "I'm definitely excited, and excited that the Nuggets were looking ..."
Is he or isn't he? Free-agent forward Kurz may choose Nuggets over Cavaliers
"Admittedly there has been quite a bit of attention paid over the last month to just who the 15th man on the Cavs' roster will be. That is because that player may actually end up playing a key role early in the season and because of the little cat and mouse game that has been developing with it. Free agent forward Rob Kurz, who has been in possession of a training camp invitation for more than a month and was in town Wednesday, may not end up being that man at all. According to a league source, Kurz is now considering bypassing the Cavs' training camp for the Denver Nuggets. Kurz is a 6-9 combo forward who is a shooting specialist. He averaged 3.9 points in 40 games as a rookie for the ..."
Kleiza ditches Nuggets for Greek team
"The Nuggets have lost forward Linas Kleiza to Olympiakos, according to his agent, Bill Duffy. Kleiza is expected to sign a 2-year, $12 million contract to play for the Greek club, which has been aggressive going after NBA players in recent years. Kleiza, who played four years for the Nuggets after a collegiate career at Missouri, was a valuable perimeter scorer off the bench. He is the second Nuggets player to leave via free agency. In July, guard Dahntay Jones signed a contract with Indiana."
It's down to Kleiza or Carter
"As the calendar turns to August, the Nuggets still have at least one hole to fill on their roster. At issue are forward Linas Kleiza and guard Anthony Carter, whose free-agent possibilities in the NBA are limited at best. With Kleiza's $2.7 million qualifying contract on the books - and including Friday's trade for Milwaukee forward Malik Allen - the Nuggets would have 12 players currently on the roster at a total of $76 million. That's roughly $7 million over the luxury tax threshold. NBA teams are required to have a minimum of 13 players under contract on the roster. And that $76 million does not include the $3.2 million the team owes Antonio McDyess in the buyout of his contract last ..."
Nuggets set to acquire Allen from Bucks
"Yes, the Birdman will be back, but who are the Nuggets' other low-post reserves? Malik Allen will apparently take one of those spots. The Nuggets plan to acquire the veteran power forward from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Sonny Weems and Walter Sharpe, an NBA source said Tuesday. The trade could become official this week, the source said. If the Nuggets don't re-sign Johan Petro, the only other backup big man is Steven Hunter, a 7-foot question mark. The 6-foot-10 Allen averaged 3.2 points off the bench for Milwaukee last season, playing in 49 games. He has been in the NBA since 2001 and has a career average of 5.4 points per game. The Villanova product has a reputation for being a ..."
Former Piston Walter Sharpe traded again
"The Nuggets have agreed to trade forward Walter Sharpe, a week after acquiring him from the Pistons. Sharpe and swingman Sonny Weems will go to the Bucks for forward Malik Allen later in the week, the Denver Post reported. The Nuggets acquired Sharpe and Arron Afflalo from the Pistons last week in exchange for a future second-round draft pick and cash. Sharpe played in eight games with the Pistons last season."
Allen could be headed to Denver
"Milwaukee Bucks forward Malik Allen might be headed to the Denver Nuggets in a trade for guard/forward Sonny Weems and forward Walter Sharpe. The trade could be announced officially this week, according to The Denver Post. "We would rather not comment on trade rumors," a spokesman for the Bucks said Tuesday. Allen, who played college basketball at Villanova, was not drafted in 2000. He signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat in July 2001. He has played for six NBA teams, including the Bucks. Last season, Allen played in 49 games for Milwaukee, averaging 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 11.8 minutes per game. Weems, who played at Arkansas, was drafted in the second round in 2008, No. 39 ..."
Pacers to announce signing of Jones
"The Indiana Pacers have scheduled a news conference today to announce the signing of free agent guard Dahntay Jones. A defensive specialist who played last season for Denver, Jones agreed to a four-year, $11 million contract last week. A Pacers spokesman said the team will make an announcement regarding restricted free agent guard Jarrett Jack once a decision has been made about matching the four-year, $20 million offer Jack received from the Toronto Raptors over the weekend. The Pacers had seven days to reach that decision."
Pacers expected to sign free agent Dahntay Jones
"The Indiana Pacers are expected to announce the free agent signing of guard Dahntay Jones on Tuesday. Jones, a defensive specialist, agreed to a four-year, $11-million contract with the Pacers last week. Jones averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Denver Nuggets last season. A Pacers spokesman said the team will make an announcement regarding restricted free agent Jarrett Jack once they decide if they're going to match the four-year, $20-million offer by the Toronto Raptors over the weekend."
Magic to match offer sheet to retain center Marcin Gortat
"An NBA source has told the Orlando Sentinel that the Orlando Magic will match the five-year, $34-million offer sheet extended by the Dallas Mavericks to Marcin Gortat and thus retain him. The team would not be able to trade him until Dec. 15, at the earliest, if that's what the team wants to do."
Report: Pistons, Nuggets work on deal for Arron Afflalo
"The Denver Post reports the Pistons and Nuggets are working on another trade. Of course we know how the first one worked. The Post reports the Pistons are trying to ship second-year guard Arron Afflalo to Denver, which would clear approximately $1 million in salary cap space for Joe Dumars to sign a power forward or center. Afflalo averaged 4.9 points in 16.7 minutes last season. He played in 74 games, though he was behind Richard Hamilton, Allen Iverson or both on the depth chart last season."
More moves on the agenda for Nuggets
"Getting the Chris Andersen deal done was just the beginning of the Nuggets' free-agency period. But while Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien is excited about getting the "Birdman" back into town, he isn't letting interested and ticket-holding fans, media or competitors know what's next on the team's agenda. "I'm happy to talk about Chris, but the rest of the world? No," Warkentien said Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after finalizing the five-year deal worth up to $26 million to keep Andersen in powder blue. "Well, we're real excited," Warkentien said of Andersen. "Both sides were motivated. In our postseason conversations, Coach (George) Karl made ..."
"Birdman" re-signing with Nuggets
"Get ready to flap your wings again. "The Birdman" is back. Chris Andersen and the Nuggets have agreed on a five-year contract that could earn Andersen up to $26 million, the player's manager, Mark Bryant, said Tuesday night. This locks in one of Denver's most popular athletes for the next half-decade. "We're ecstatic to stay in the community," Bryant said. Andersen will make $3.7 million next season in his backloaded and incentive-based contract, which will help the Nuggets financially. They entered this free-agency period over the NBA luxury tax line of $69.92 million, which was announced Tuesday. Andersen can officially sign today. He was on vacation Tuesday, his 31st birthday, and ..."
Cavaliers one of several teams considering Channing Frye
"Wednesday is the first day free agents can sign with NBA teams. The Cavaliers may not have any deals on that day, but they are getting closer as they continue to narrow their focus. After making a free-agent scouting trip to Los Angeles on Sunday, Cavs GM Danny Ferry came home and hosted free-agent power forward Channing Frye on Monday at the team's practice facility in Independence. Frye is the type of "stretch" forward the Cavs are interested in during the free-agent period as they look to find big men who can hit jumpers when teams collapse on LeBron James and center Shaquille O'Neal. At this point, the Cavs are looking at several power forwards in addition to Frye. One, of course, is ..."
Nugs, Birdman working on nest-case scenario
"Though a deal isn't done, amicable negotiations are going pretty well between the Nuggets and representatives of free agent Chris Andersen. "The Birdman" is the Nuggets' top free-agent priority, and both sides are hammering out a fair multiyear deal. Andersen's camp is hoping for a deal around $25 million for five years. The Nuggets are hoping to backload the contract and have Andersen make around $3 million next season, an NBA source said. Denver is currently close to the $71.15 luxury tax line from last season, and it's possible, with the signing of Andersen and perhaps others with lesser contracts, that the team could start the season with a payroll around $77 million (teams can then ..."
Nuggets in L.A. to get Birdman back in Denver
"After the first official day of free-agent negotiations, there is optimism that the Nuggets will be able to sign unrestricted free agent Chris Andersen. "I think it's fair to say that both sides are motivated," Nuggets director of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said Wednesday afternoon. "That's why we're in L.A. and meeting today." Warkentien is currently in Los Angeles meeting with Andersen's representatives, notably Denver-based attorney Mark Bryant and agent Steve Heumann of the L.A.-based Creative Arts Agency. Bryant said the goal is to try to get Andersen a five-year deal around the mid-level exception (in the $5 million range annually). "I think that's possible. But we're a ..."
Nuggets, Andersen working on deal
"The negotiations between Chris Andersen and the Nuggets have begun. Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien is currently in Los Angeles, meeting with Andersen's representatives, notably Denver-based attorney Mark Bryant and agent Steve Huemann of the Los Angeles-based Creative Arts Agency. Bryant said the goal is to try to get Andersen a five-year deal around the mid-level exception (in the $5 million range annually). "I think that's possible. But we're a team player," Bryant said this morning. "We'll make the necessary adjustments if we can and find the right fit." There are numerous teams inquiring about the NBA's No. 2 shot-blocker from last season, notably ..."
Nuggets try making sense out of dollar days
"It's hard enough to get deep into the playoffs, but staying at that level is even more difficult. What the Nuggets do in July might go a long way toward determining their staying power. Denver hit the fiscal jackpot last season, paring payroll while improving its talent en route to making the Western Conference finals after five consecutive first-round playoff exits. Cutting salary and improving on the court will be much more difficult this time around. The Nuggets have more than $71 million in salary committed to players for the upcoming season, not including a $2.7 million qualifying contract offer to Linas Kleiza. After signing free agents, the priority of which is their own big man, ..."
Nuggets set to tip the cap
"Barely a month removed from their best postseason run in a generation, the Nuggets look around to see their rivals re-arming. The Spurs just added Richard Jefferson and DeJuan Blair and will probably get Bruce Bowen back. The Blazers are under the salary cap and are pursuing Hedo Turkoglu and Andre Miller. On the bright side, the Lakers are still the same team that knocked Denver out of the playoffs. So, what do the Nuggets do to keep up? That's the $9.8 million question. Or, given the hated luxury tax, the $19.6 million question. For the last year, the Nuggets have been on a serious cost-cutting campaign, slicing more than $20 million from the payroll to get below the luxury-tax ..."
Re-signing Andersen No. 1 concern
"The Nuggets' top priorities are re-signing center Chris Andersen and likely working on a contract extension with coach George Karl, according to NBA sources. Andersen played last season on a one-year, $998,398 contract. He likely will get a multiyear deal, and Denver could give Andersen an extra year if it means paying him less money next season to help with the salary cap. The team has yet to sit down and make an offer to Karl, who has one year left on his contract. Meanwhile, the agent for unrestricted free agent Dahntay Jones said the "goal" is for Jones to return to Denver, but that Jones desires a multiyear deal. He signed with Denver last summer for one year at $926,678. "I think ..."
Hunter will not opt out of contract
"Nuggets center Steven Hunter is not expected to opt out of the final year of his contract, his agent Mark Bartelstein said today. "As of right now we're not planning on doing anything," Bartelstein said. The deadline for opting out of a contract is June 30. But Hunter is due nearly $3.7 million next season, money that is hard to leave on the table, particuarly in the tenuous situation Hunter finds himself in. The Nuggets traded for Hunter two seasons ago, but chronic knee injuries largely have kept him off the court. He missed 30 games because of injury in 2007-08, and all of the 2008-09 season. Hunter said he would participate in summer basketball as much as he can to insisted he would be ..."
