Without new deal, Deng may go: report
Since the free-agency period began at the start of this month, it was believed the status of Bulls restricted free agents Luol Deng and Ben Gordon might not be resolved until the fall. But according to a source close to Deng, the future of the 6-9 forward should be decided -- one way or another -- in the next two weeks. The source confirmed the main elements of a Yahoo! Sports report Monday that said Deng, 23, would opt to sign a one-year qualifying offer for $4.5 million and become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he's not able to reach a long-term agreement before he leaves the country Aug. 4. Deng will be in Europe for much of August playing with the British team in the European Championship qualifying tournament.

You can't keep everyone, your team will be a financial disaster. Unless you buy him out, which would be at a ridiculous amount given his contract left, you can't just dump Hughes. He has almost no value right now. You need to use one of your trading pieces in Deng or Gordon to move someone like Hughes or Tyus out, and bring back a true PF. You won't have a better time to do a sign and trade as right now, so you have to get the pieces in place to make this team better within 3 years. Just signing everyone back, when you have too many at one position and none at another (you have no forntcourt scoring and a ton of slashing SF type players) will not work.

I'm sorry--but we need for Pax and Reisndorf to justify the raise in ticket prices from last year to this year. That means they must re-sign Deng and Gordon, keep Hinrich to mentor Rose along because his summer play shows that he needs a little time, dump Larry Hughes and find the heart of Tyrus Thomas. I still remember screaming at the television when they traded Aldridge for Thomas--bonehead decision. Now, we must make sure that Deng and Gordon are available, dump some salary, and look for a real power forward. I still think we need Zach Randolph--although he is an idiot, with a strong coaching staff he will improve us by 15 wins. Thats enough to make us a 4 or 5 seed in the East. Reinsdorf is so cheap in paying players but passes the buck to the fans. Why should we pay an increase to watch a Deng and Gordon-less team? Pax--do some wheeling and dealing before we buy stakes and pitchforks and run you out of town!
