New-look line not ready for contact

"Andy Reid won't be showcasing his star-studded offensive line to the Lehigh masses this morning.

Not only will the overhauled unit's debut be pushed back, but some of the team's other major superstars won't be unleashed either when the Eagles conduct their first contact scrimmage of training camp.

Joining already injured Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook and defensive end Victor Abiamiri on the Physically Unable to Perform List Thursday were right tackle Shawn Andrews, left tackle Jason Peters, cornerback Asante Samuel and defensive tackle Trevor Laws.

Five of those six are projected starters and four have made multiple Pro Bowls. As for Andrews, Peters and Samuel, Reid couldn't give a timetable for their returns.

"It's too early to tell," he said. "I don't think they're too serious, but we'll see how it works out through the night here."

Andrews' back flared up after the morning sprints, known as gassers. Peters suffered from quad spasms and hamstring spasms for Samuel and Laws forced all three to work with head trainer Rick Burkholder during Thursday's afternoon practice.

Most disappointing are the injuries to the offensive line, which is expected to have three new starters with Andrews' move from right guard to right tackle. The line will take the field this morning without two-fifths of its starting personnel.

"I look forward to all five of us being out there, ready to get after it," left guard Todd Herremans said. "But you can't foresee stuff like this happening, so luckily we got strong backups."

In the final practice in shorts before the hitting begins, reserve tackle Winston Justice subbed for Andrews at right tackle. Herremans moved to left tackle to replace Peters, the All-Pro acquired from Buffalo in a trade, and Herremans' spot was filled by reserve Max Jean-Gilles.

The lone bright spot was that Stacy Andrews, a free-agent signee from the Bengals, is expected to scrimmage today, not yet eight months removed from reconstructive knee surgery."
