"Somebody at the NovaCare Complex isn't telling the truth.
At least that's the perception among NFL writers and fans of the Eagles' public commitment to Donovan McNabb as their starting quarterback in 2010.
Head coach Andy Reid has said McNabb will return for a 12th season, team president Joe Banner suggested McNabb would even play without a contract extension, and McNabb told reporters last week that his psychic sees him playing another season in Philadelphia.
Somehow, none of it is convincing.
Rumors linking McNabb to trades with more than a half-dozen teams since the end of the regular season -- some more realistic than others -- are rampant.
Simply put, the Eagles have a quarterback controversy. McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick each have one season left on their contracts, and two of the three are unlikely to return.
The Eagles most likely will release Vick and not pick up the $5.2 million option on his contract. Kolb could be traded, but the Eagles would get more for McNabb, but from whom?
The rumors link McNabb to many teams, so here's a look at how realistic those rumors might be:
San Francisco
Realistic: Minnesota and Arizona are the most frequently mentioned front-runners in the McNabb sweepstakes, but the 49ers should be considered major contenders. They have proven weapons in running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis, and a future superstar in wideout Michael Crabtree.
They have an improving defense and a fiery coach. All that's missing is an upper-echelon quarterback."
