Lurie and Reid keep their eyes on a super prize

"The three-year contract extension announced for Eagles coach Andy Reid inevitably will elicit the same brackish stream of opinions from the coach's longtime supporters and detractors.

But in Wednesday's press conference to announce Reid's second extension since becoming head coach in 1999, owner Jeffrey Lurie reaffirmed his faith in Reid to deliver the franchise's first Super Bowl title.

Just like former Steelers coach Bill Cowher and former Colts coach Tony Dungy each approached the championship doorstep many times before finally walking through, Lurie believes Reid's career will parallel theirs.

"I think our No. 1 priority by far is to win a Super Bowl," Lurie said. "One of the reasons for this contract extension is the obsession and the prioritization of that.

"There's been so much accomplished over the last decade, with multiple division titles and an incredibly unusually successful decade in every measure. The one remaining priority is to win a Super Bowl championship and go from there."

Reid holds many of the franchise coaching records, including career victories (115) and winning percentage (.611). He has the fourth-most wins among active coaches and second-best winning percentage.

Only three other coaches in league history have coached the same team for 11 years and only 14 others have coached one team longer. If Reid sees the end of his latest deal, in 2013, he'll become one of just 11 to coach the same team for 15 years or longer. The record holder, former Dallas coach Tom Landry, presided over the Cowboys for 29 straight years."
