Iguodala signs 6-year, $80 million contract extension

"ANDRE IGUODALA heard Jimmy Rollins call out Phillies fans, calling them front-runners."I was like, 'Damn,' because I knew what was coming after that, especially with what had been going on with him not running out [a play]," Iguodala was saying yesterday after formally signing a 6-year contract with the 76ers worth a reported $80 million."They scrutinize the small things here. The way I look at it, just play hard, just play well, all that is forgotten about. If he performs well, they'll forget about it."The thing about Iguodala is, he had been a Sixer for four seasons and wanted to stay. In many respects, he has been a quick study, on and off the court."It's been an even mix for me," he said of his relationship with the fans. "As of late, it's been all love. You've got to understand, the city hasn't had a championship in a while, and the fans are very passionate about their sports. I've learned there are things you just can't say, even if the statement is right. You can kind of get caught up in tough situations at times."At 24, Iguodala has had his share of tough situations. Despite being the ninth overall pick in the 2004 draft, he spent his rookie season as a virtual afterthought on offense, learning to play in the shadow of Allen Iverson, understanding that he didn't have the three-point shot that then-coach Jim O'Brien placed at a huge premium. When Iverson was traded to Denver, the Sixers handed Iguodala the ball and the mantle and told him to figure it out as he went along. When they made it back to the playoffs last season, Detroit threw a defensive blanket around him and all but dared him - or any of his teammates - to do something about it.But the more new president and general manager Ed Stefanski watched, the more Stefanski knew what had to be done. He went out and got a premier low-post player, signing Elton Brand for 5 years and $79.8 million, plucked 6-10 forward Marreese Speights from Florida in the first round, strengthened the bench with guards Royal Ivey and Kareem Rush. With all of that in place, he got serious with Iguodala and agent Rob Pelinka. If you want to argue that Stefanski overpaid Iguodala, Stefanski is ready with statistics, pointing out that Iguodala was one of eight players in the NBA last season to average more than 18 points, five rebounds and four assists, listing Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, LeBron James, Caron Butler, Tracy McGrady, Hedu Turkoglu and Paul Pierce"
