"Three plays into the game it was obvious this wasn't going to be an enjoyable trip to the Valley of the Sun. Starting quarterback Trent Edwards delivered a third-down pass on the money to rookie James Hardy, but in the process took a vicious hit from blitzing safety Adrian Wilson.
Edwards' head slammed against the ground, concussing him. He was down for several minutes, and when he was helped to the bench his eyes were glazed and he was clearly out of it.
"He's responding, but he's still a little groggy," Jauron reported after the game. "Hopefully he'll be fine as time goes by. It's a good time to have a bye, heal some things up and get some work done."
And while Edwards is healing, the Bills certainly have plenty to work on.
First and foremost, they must get their defense back on track.
During the four consecutive victories to start the season the defense was solid. It held the first three opponents to less than 100 yards rushing and 255 yards of total offense, and Jacksonville had the highest first down total with 19. Most importantly, Buffalo's highest point yield was 23.
On Sunday, the Cardinals had 24 points, 19 first downs and 235 yards - by halftime. They finished with gory totals of 41 points, 28 first downs, 373 yards, 9 of 15 conversions on third down, and more than 36 minutes of possession time.
"They beat us up, there's no doubt about it," said linebacker Paul Posluszny of a unit that began the day ranked seventh in yards allowed, fifth in points allowed and was No. 1 in third-down defense. "Putting that many points on the board, we can't accept that. They played great, but we made mistakes."
Said Mitchell: "It's a tough one to swallow. It was extremely frustrating. We've been pretty good on third down, but so have they and we knew that it would be a challenge. Even when we did get them to third-and-long they still converted. They were dictating the game."
The Cardinals used a short passing game - a departure from their usual attack-down-field mode - and the Bills had no answers. Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner, facing little pass rush pressure, had a field day playing catch with his stable of receivers, which didn't even include star Anquan Boldin who sat out with a head injury.
He completed 33 of 42 passes for 250 yards with nine different receivers getting in on the action.
"They came in with the mindset of quick passing and we didn't apply pressure," said Kelsay who was shocked the Bills didn't record a sack or force a turnover. "The times he did hold the ball we still weren't putting pressure on him."
The Cardinals scored on all four of their possessions in the first half as Warner threw a 2-yard TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald in the first quarter after J.P. Losman and Marshawn Lynch botched a handoff and gave Arizona possession at the Buffalo 38.
Tim Hightower ripped off a 17-yard TD run on a third-down play early in the second, Edgerrin James plunged "
