Eagles' new backup tight end: Smith, No. 82

"Hope you didn't rush out and buy that Tony Curtis jersey when the former Cowboys tight end survived the Eagles' weekend roster cutdown.Despite an impressive return last week from a high ankle sprain, culminating with a four-catch performance in the final preseason game, Curtis was axed yesterday in favor of Alex Smith, a tight end who had been released by the Patriots. A week ago, Smith was supposed to be coming to the Eagles in a trade for A.J. Feeley, but for whatever reason (perhaps the fact that you don't inherit a contract if you don't trade for the guy), New England ended up cutting Smith and the Birds ended up cutting Feeley. The Eagles have assigned Smith No. 82, so if you have an old L.J. Smith jersey in the closet (and who doesn't?), you're good to go.Smith worked out for the Giants on Monday, but signed with the Eagles yesterday. Apparently, he will be Brent Celek's lone backup in the season opener Sunday at Carolina. Rookie Rob Myers remains on the practice squad."It felt to me that the Eagles were the best fit for me; I felt I could come in right away and help,'' said Myers, a 2005 third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was traded to the Patriots this offseason for a fifth-round pick. Myers said an ankle cleanout in April kept him at less than 100 percent until the past few weeks."Coach [Andy] Reid told me that they love to [use] the two tight ends,'' Smith told a conference call with reporters. "It's an offense I've been running the last 4 years [in Tampa], so he doesn't see any problem, throwing me right in the mix.""
