Eagles' McNabb says short Maclin holdout won't hurt him

"Still no sign of first-round wideout Jeremy Maclin at Eagles training camp, though Maclin is said to be in the Philadelphia area awaiting resolution of the contract negotiations between his agents, Jim Steiner and Ben Dogra, and the front office.Steiner texted yesterday that the parties were "negotiating our rear ends off," but by the end of the day, no benefit was apparent, aside from perhaps slenderized hips. Team sources indicated no breakthroughs, and the count of signed first-rounders across the league remained at three, which both sides have acknowledged is not helping the effort to set a fair value for Maclin. The Eagles probably won't turn up the "he's-really-hurting-himself" rhetoric until Maclin starts missing the full-squad drills that begin Friday. In the meantime, quarterback Donovan McNabb did not seem concerned."I wasn't here, my rookie year," said McNabb, who missed the first 5 days of camp in 1999, including 2 days of full-squad workouts. "It's part of the business, it's something you go through. I'm just excited that we had an opportunity to work out in Arizona, so for the days that he [misses], I've had an opportunity to work with him, so when he comes in, we can just kind of feed from that."Asked how long Maclin can miss before he starts imperiling his chance to contribute as a rookie, McNabb said: "There's ways [around] that. For him, these days would just be days to get ahead, because we're going to go back over the same thing when the vets get here. I'm sure he and his agent and Joe [Banner] and Andy [Reid] and those guys will sit down and resolve something and give him an opportunity to get here, so that he can kind of get his feet wet and be able to battle and compete with the rest of the guys.""
