"Rashad Baker's dream to play for his local NFL team ended yesterday when the Eagles cut the free-agent safety.Baker, 27, is a 2000 graduate of Camden's Woodrow Wilson High. Interestingly, he was instrumental in helping the Eagles make the playoffs last year when he had a big interception for the Raiders against the Buccaneers in the last game of the season.Baker was signed to a 1-year deal in March to shore up a position that was severely depleted by the departure of Brian Dawkins and Sean Considine, who signed with other teams."I think I've had a fair camp," Baker had said before being waived. "I know there are a lot of good players at the safety position on this team. My goal is to open some eyes. Some days it might happen because I make a couple of interceptions. Some days I might not get any picks, so I'll have to do something else to stand out. That might mean doing something on special teams or anywhere on the field."Baker was competing with Byron Parker, who was cut to make roster room for Michael Vick, and Reshard Langford for a backup spot, and yesterday the Eagles signed rookie free-agent safety Brandon Harrison."What the team decides to do is out of my hands," Baker said last week. "I want to do my best at practice every day and perform well in the preseason games to make it hard for them [to cut him]."Baker has seen his share of peaks and valleys during his five seasons in the NFL. He played two seasons with the Buffalo Bills before being waived, then was signed by the Minnesota Vikings, but did not play a game before being released in November 2006.He was picked up by the New England Patriots and finished the season with them, then was released before the end of the 2007 season and picked up by the Raiders. He had his best season as a pro last season for Oakland, with three interceptions."
