Dallas' Phillips seeking first playoff win

"Coming out of the regular season, the Dallas Cowboys are flying high - higher, certainly, than the Eagles, whom they drubbed Sunday, 24-0.But now come the playoffs, and whatever demons the Cowboys buried in the past month are nothing compared to the ones looming in the postseason.Nobody has to remind Wade Phillips that the Cowboys have not won a playoff game since defeating Minnesota on Dec. 28, 1996, or that Phillips is winless in his four career playoff games as an NFL head coach. The Dallas coach brought it up himself at his news conference yesterday, not waiting for the inevitable questions."The season itself was successful," he said. "Now we have a second season. We all know about that and I know we're going to bring up the negatives of that."Well, yes, it's hard not to point out that a franchise that boasts five Super Bowl titles has gone 12 seasons without a postseason victory heading into Saturday night's first-round playoff matchup with the Eagles. Or that Phillips, despite winning two of the past three NFC East titles and becoming the winningest coach in Cowboys history based on percentage, owns a playoff winning percentage of .000 in two games with Buffalo and one each with Denver and Dallas. But Phillips contends none of that matters. This team, he said, is not the one that missed the playoffs last season, nor the top-seeded team that fell to the wild-card Giants in the 2007 divisional round. That 2007 team had beaten the Giants twice in the regular season, just as this season, the Cowboys swept the Eagles."This team hasn't won in the playoffs but it has not lost in the playoffs," Phillips said. "We're looking forward to this ballgame. Yes, it's hard to play a team three times, but I'd rather be on our side of it. I'd rather be the team that won twice and is playing at home than the team that lost twice and is playing on the road."Especially since the Cowboys are riding a wave of confidence not seen in North Texas in years. They have won three in a row and have a winning record after Thanksgiving for the first time since 1996. They won their final regular-season game for the first time since 1999."It's how we play this game that counts," Phillips said. "But I think you've got to feel confident going in that you won a couple of games against the other team and you're playing at home. We've got a lot going for us, I believe . . . I think our confidence level is high. That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing."Phillips has made one nod to his lack of postseason success. He said he has made some changes in his team's playoff preparation, though he declined to be specific about the changes."
