Cowboys' homework helped stop McNabb's sneak

"The defensive line shift that allowed the Cowboys to make their big fourth-and-one stop in Sunday night's 20-16 win over Philadelphia was a product of thorough scouting.

With Dallas coach Wade Phillips expecting Donovan McNabb to try a quarterback sneak from the Cowboys' 45-yard line, the defensive ends shifted from over the tackles to over the guards.

End Marcus Spears got low and stopped McNabb for no gain. Four plays later, wide receiver Miles Austin used a double move to elude cornerback Sheldon Brown and give the Cowboys a 20-13 lead with a 49-yard touchdown with 8:04 left.

"(Nose tackle Jay) Ratliff played it real well in there too," Phillips said. "We moved everybody inside."

Phillips said video showed the Eagles usually called a quarterback sneak over right guard in fourth-and-one situations.

"That's the play we had worked on," he said. "(McNabb) is a strong quarterback, and they have run a lot of sneaks for first downs, especially on fourth down. So we had a special defense ready for that."

Phillips said the Eagles tipped their hand when they lined up on fourth-and-one from their own 42 in the third quarter."
