Bucks deal Williams to Cavs in 3-team swap

"Any doubts about general manager John Hammond shaking up the Bucks roster have been dispelled, as he traded point guard Mo Williams to the Cleveland Cavaliers today and forward Desmond Mason to Oklahoma City in a three-team deal that brought Oklahoma City point guard Luke Ridnour to the Bucks.

The Bucks also received guard Damon Jones and his expiring contract and swingman Adrian Griffin in the deal, getting Jones from Cleveland and Griffin from Oklahoma City. The Cavaliers sent veteran forward Joe Smith to Oklahoma City as part of the trade.

Williams goes to Cleveland, which has been searching for several years for a legitimate point guard to team with star LeBron James. The 6-foot-1 Williams played four seasons in Milwaukee after spending his rookie season with the Utah Jazz. Williams was a starter in his first year with the Bucks and shared time with T.J. Ford in his second season, before starting 68 games in the 2006-'07 season and 66 games last year.

He was bothered by a right thumb injury that limited his effectiveness but still averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 assists last season.

The Bucks get the 27-year-old Ridnour, entering his fifth season in the league after being the 14th overall pick by the Sonics in the 2003 draft. And Hammond finds some salary relief by dealing Williams and the remaining five years and $43 million left on his contract. Williams will make $8.4 million this season and is signed through the 2012-'13 season, while Ridnour has two years and $13 million left on his contract.

Jones played in 67 games for the Cavaliers last season and averaged 6.5 points in 19 minutes per game.

Jones played for the Bucks during the 2003-'04 season, when he played a major role and averaged 7.0 points in 82 games. He went on to play one season for Miami and the last three seasons in Cleveland.

Griffin averaged 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds in 35 games with Chicago and Seattle last season. Bucks coach Scott Skiles is familiar with the 34-year-old Griffin, who played in 54 games and averaged 10.8 minutes with the Bulls during the 2006-'07 season.

Mason's stay in Milwaukee turned out to be one year, even though he signed a two-year deal to return to the club last summer. The 6-5 Mason played most of two seasons in Oklahoma City with the New Orleans Hornets franchise, when that club played home games there in 2005-'06 and 2006-'07 following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Mason averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds while playing in 59 games with the Bucks last season, including 56 starts.

Earlier this summer, Hammond traded for veteran small forward Richard Jefferson, sending Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons to the New Jersey Nets."
