2009 Fantasy outlooks: New York Jets

"The Jets might not be a great team, at least not yet, but they certainly are interesting almost every year.

Last season, we had the Brett Favre saga, which dominated headlines throughout the year -- from his trade to his hot start and then watching him fizzle out. This year, we have Mark Sanchez posing for a magazine and new coach Rex Ryan engaging in a war of words with Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder. We also have the contract scenarios playing out with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. All of this doesn't help on the field, but it does make for good fodder and things for us to talk about. If the Jets don't play well, the fans can take solace knowing their coach might win in a bar fight.

The Jets have the potential for some sleepers and busts, which Fantasy owners should be aware of coming into the season. A lot will depend on the quarterback scenario and who wins the job between Sanchez and Kellen Clemens. Neither is a good Fantasy option this year, but the starter will determine what happens with the rest of the offense. For example, Jones and even Washington could struggle running the ball, but rookie Shonn Greene has a lot of potential. Jerricho Cotchery could also be a bust with an unproven quarterback, but tight end Dustin Keller should shine. Once again it will be an interesting year for the Jets.

Sleeper ... Shonn Greene, RB

You can also put third-year wide receivers David Clowney and Chansi Stuckey in this category, but they are late-round picks in deeper leagues. Greene could be a star. The Jets moved up in the NFL Draft to take Greene in the third round from Iowa, and he's the running back of the future, which is why they won't be giving a long-term contract to Thomas Jones and possibly Leon Washington as well. Coach Rex Ryan said Greene is a "fourth-quarter weapon," which means the rookie will be getting carries at the end of games to run down the clock and be working against a tired defense. He's not going to get the majority of carries, at least early on in the season, but we could see him taking over for Jones at some point in the year. Washington is more of a change-of-pace running back, so Greene's playing time will impact Jones. Greene is worth drafting as a No. 4 Fantasy option, but don't be surprised if he ends up as a No. 2 running back by the end of the year. In keeper leagues, Greene should be a mid-round pick because he should be good for several years.

Breakout ... Dustin Keller, TE

Keller played well as a rookie last season when he had 48 catches for 535 yards and three touchdowns. He could have been even better had Brett Favre not been playing with a torn biceps. We'll find out this year if Keller is ready to take the next step, and we believe he will. Whether it's Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens at quarterback, an inexperienced passer always depends on the tight end, especially good ones. Keller has already received rave reviews this offseason about being the best playma
