"Chris Young's season is over.
The veteran righty will undergo surgery Monday to repair a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder -- essentially the same procedure Johan Santana had last September. Young was diagnosed with the tear earlier in the week and spent the last few days deciding between rehab and season-ending surgery.
Had Young chosen rehab, there may have been a small chance of him returning late in the year. Young went the rehab route after sustaining the same injury last April with the Padres and returned to pitch three September games.
Young was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts for the Mets, who signed him for $1.1 million last winter. The Mets will move forward with Dillon Gee in Young's rotation spot. Gee is slated to pitch tonight in Houston.
"I think [Gee] has a much better idea of how to prepare now that he knows what role he's in," manager Terry Collins said before the Mets' 9-5 victory over the Rockies.
Gee was a last-minute replacement for Young on Saturday against the Dodgers and didn't have his best stuff. Overall, the righty allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 5 **1/3** innings."
