Yankees' Russell Martin sits out with stiffness in lower back

"Yankees catcher Russell Martin, who made his first start Sunday after a four-day stint away with back problems, was a late scratch from the team's lineup last night and was replaced by Francisco Cervelli.

The team announced that Martin had "lower back stiffness."

In Sunday's game, Martin went 0-for-4 while the Indians stole five bases on him. Though the steals were in part due to starter Freddy Garcia's slower delivery, it was enough to prompt questions about his comfort level behind the plate.

"I mean, it's still there a little bit. It's something I can play with. I can run, throw, hit, even though I didn't hit today," Martin said on Sunday. "I can do enough to get the job done."

Manager Joe Girardi said he watched Martin take batting practice today and it looked like he didn't have the rotation on his body that he normally did. "
