Yankees pound Greinke, Brewers

"Zack Greinke never had much luck pitching in old Yankee Stadium for the Kansas City Royals.

That trend didn't change with Greinke pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers in new Yankee Stadium.

In his worst outing since coming to the Brewers, Greinke was roughed up for seven runs in only two innings Tuesday night as the New York Yankees romped to a 12-2 interleague victory.

Afterward, manager Ron Roenicke didn't know quite what to make of Greinke's shortened outing, which included a whopping 56 pitches. He just didn't see much sense in sending his starting pitcher back out to take a bigger beating.

"He already had given up seven runs," Roenicke said. "If I let him go back out there and they get a couple more runs off him, now he's got nine runs. I don't want him to have nine runs, or whatever the case may be.

"He wasn't locating (pitches). They weren't taking any bad swings. It is (puzzling). With an offense like the Yankees, if you don't make good pitches, you're going to get hit hard."

Greinke took exception after the game to a question about his poor history in New York, but the numbers don't lie. In five games (four starts) against the Yankees here, he is 0-3 with an 11.29 earned run average, with 31 hits and 13 walks allowed in 18 1/3 innings.

"It was just a real bad game," said Greinke, whose ERA ballooned to 5.63 despite a 7-3 record. "I wasn't locating anything, and when I did a couple of times, they took some good pitches and I wasn't able to make good pitches after that.

"I couldn't pitch any worse than I did. It's no one's fault but mine. I wanted to go back out there but I guess (Roenicke) thought I was pitching too bad to go back out there."

In four interleague road games against Boston and New York, the Brewers' otherwise improved pitching staff has been tagged for double-figure run totals three times. The Brewers have played poorly on the road in general this season (15-25), but their worst fears about playing the Red Sox and Yankees on their turf have been realized."
