"Andruw Jones announced his arrival as a superstar at Yankee Stadium in Game 1 of the 1996 World Series. Now, he may be calling the new Stadium home.
The Yankees and Jones continue to talk about the 33-year-old becoming the team's fourth outfielder. The sides remain apart on the contract terms right now, but a baseball source said the sides were moving closer.
Jones batted .230 with 19 home runs and 48 RBIs for the White Sox last season. After 12 years in Atlanta, Jones has become a journeyman, bouncing from the Dodgers to the Rangers to the White Sox over the last three seasons.
The Yankees like Jones because he can play all three outfield positions and would give them some pop at the plate from the right side. Essentially, he'd be filling the role occupied by Marcus Thames last season, but with more fielding responsibilities.
If a deal with Jones does not materialize, former Yankee Johnny Damon remains an option for the team, a source said. The Yankees prefer to sign Jones because he is a better fielder and Damon, 37, still hopes to land somewhere as an everyday player.
Signing Jones would fill one of the remaining holes on the Yankees roster. The other hole is in the starting rotation, and the Yankees are still looking at the starting pitching options out there.
With just four weeks to go before pitchers and catchers report to Tampa, Andy Pettitte remains a mystery. That leaves the Yankees with two open spots in their rotation. One of those likely will be filled by Ivan Nova."
