Yankees decline options on Lance Berkman and Kerry Wood; Reliever open to returning to Bronx in 2011

"Kerry Wood and Lance Berkman helped spark the Yankees at the trade deadline, each playing a role in the Bombers' run to the ALCS.

Their tenure in pinstripes appears to be over, as the Yankees announced Wednesday that they had declined the 2011 options on both players. They also declined their $5.5 million option on Nick Johnson for next season. Johnson got a $250,000 buyout.

Wood had the biggest impact during his short stint with the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 24 regular-season appearances as the primary setup man for Mariano Rivera.

Wood's $11 million option was too steep for a setup man. The 33-year-old figures to get offers to close for other teams. Wood said he hopes to sign with a contending team, so the possibility remains that he could return to serve as the Yankees' eighth-inning man if he receives offers only from bad teams."
