Before the game, and before they knew first baseman Mark Teixeira would be going down to a calf strain, the Yankees acquired outfielder/first baseman Steve Pearce from the Houston Astros for cash considerations. To make room on their 40-man roster, they designated infielder Brandon Laird for assignment.

Manager Joe Girardi said Pearce, a right-handed hitter, "has had a lot of success against left-handers.''

Girardi said he didn't know when Pearce would join the team. Before the game, the question around the clubhouse was what roster move would have to be made to open room for Pearce on the 25-man roster. However, the injury to Teixeira may make that a moot point, as Teixeira — who said he could be out a week or two — could be heading for the disabled list.
