The Yankees didn't plan on making a deal before Tuesday's trade deadline. Injuries, however, changed their plans.

With Alex Rodriguez out for the foreseeable future (broken hand) and Mark Teixeira out until at least Friday (inflamed left wrist) the Yankees made a last-minute trade for Casey McGehee of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Yankees sent reliever Chad Qualls — who made eight appearances with the Yankees since being traded from Philadelphia on July 1 — to the Pirates. The deal was completed just moments before the 4 p.m. deadline. And in McGehee, the Yankees get a much-needed right-handed hitter who can fill in for both Teixeira (at first base) and Rodriguez (at third base).
