Wright backing off from weight room

"David Wright is confident his weight-lifting regimen didn't lead to the stress fracture in his lower back, but he's still going to change how he trains -- not that he has much of a choice.

"I haven't been able to do the things in the weight room that I normally do and I think that's gonna be a good thing going forward," Wright said before last night's Mets game against the Marlins at Citi Field was rained out. "I'm definitely looking at doing less down the road, too. I'm gonna have to do less, pretty much forever -- but that's fine."

Wright wasn't able to do much during his rehab in Florida after being out since mid-May, but he has looked significantly better at the plate since his return than he did before the injury.

"Even though I'm doing less, I feel relatively strong," Wright said. "I'm sure that has something to do with not playing every day for two months and not being as banged up as I normally am this time of year, but I think not lifting as much has helped."

And that won't change.

"It's not gonna be too beneficial putting a bunch of weight on my back, no matter when it is," Wright said. "That would hurt me more than help. In baseball, you don't need to be lifting heavy weights."

Wright is hitting .392 (20-for-51) with two homers and 13 RBIs since returning from the disabled list -- but for all his success at the plate, he has remained uncomfortable in the field since coming back."
