"Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, who has had his own fair share of injuries, empathized with St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright, who suffered an apparent season-ending elbow injury at Cardinals camp.

Wood said he was "sorry to see it happen" but added that pitching injuries are common.

"He'll be ready to go in spring of next year," Wood said. "He'll be strong. It's just going to be a long and boring summer for him. You feel bad for the guy. You never want to see guys get hurt, especially top-of-the-line guys like that. But he's not the first, and he won't be the last."

When manager Mike Quade heard the news, he said he pretended to look at the Cubs' roster list.

"I was like, 'Is he on my roster?'" Quade said.

Quade was trying to say he was only concerned with his own players. He called it a shame to see it happen to Wainwright."
