With just 5 catches in last 4 games, Roy Williams knows it's time to step up if he wants to stay

"With the ascension of Jason Garrett , Cowboys receiver Roy Williams is playing for his fifth head coach in a seven-year NFL career.

For Williams, that means he must prove himself to another head coach for the fifth time. The task takes on more urgency because Williams wants to avoid being caught up in the inevitable changes that are likely to come.

"I want to retire here," Williams said Wednesday. "I want to put on film that I can play in this environment and help this team win and just do the right thing. That's all I can do, can't do nothing else."

Williams could find himself in a precarious spot.

After a strong beginning, Williams has had his role in the passing game dwindle. In the last four games, all losses, he has only five catches out of 13 passes thrown to him for 55 yards with two touchdowns.

At the same time, rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant has had an increasing impact on the offense. Bryant is second on the club in catches (38) and yards (435) with four touchdowns, one fewer than Williams.

Owner-general manager Jerry Jones, in a talk to the club on Monday, and Garrett have stressed that there will be increased internal competition for playing time. Jones' words particularly resonated with Williams.

"When the owner speaks, you better listen," Williams said. "We are talking about the man who writes his name on your checks. That's what he says, so that's what you've got to do." "
