"Reaction in Northeast Ohio to the Indians' acquisition of Ubaldo Jimenez has been mixed, to say the least.
How can that be? Jimenez has the potential to dominate opposing lineups, even the most fearsome batting orders in the American League. He has no-hit stuff, 20-game winner stuff, Cy Young Award stuff.
Granted, he did not perform well the first two months of the season, but that can be explained by thumb and groin injuries incurred in spring training.
The Tribe's deep thinkers should know a good pitcher when they see one: CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee won Cy Young Awards while wearing Tribe uniforms, and Jimenez is superior to both in terms of lighting up a radar gun and delivering knee-buckling breaking pitches.
That said, I would not trade the franchise's two best pitching prospects, Drew Pomeranz and Alex White, for Jimenez and leave the farm system with no arm above the Class A level that stands out.
General Manager Chris Antonetti and his front office staff love to crunch numbers, but they ignored or dismissed the most important one.
They traded 12 years of control for 2· years of control. That can be beneficial under only one circumstance. The Indians must win a World Series before Jimenez becomes a free agent. Either this year, in 2012 or 2013."
