The Red Wings may lose and gain a forward in time for Wednesday's game against Los Angeles.

The Red Wings were minus forward Valtteri Filppula for Tuesday's practice at Toyota Sports Center. General manager Ken Holland said Filppula was nursing an injury — but not the knee that been an issue with Filppula, who sprained a knee during the lockout playing in Finland.

Holland said Filppula will be re-evaluated Wednesday and the Wings will know at that point whether he'll be able to play against the defending Stanley Cup-champion Kings.

Johan Franzen (hip flexor) was on the ice for the start of practice. All signs point to him playing, after having missed the last two weeks with the bothersome hip.

Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and Brendan Smith, both out recently with shoulder injuries, are on the ice for practice and could be available to play against the Kings.
