Even though there are still more than six weeks until Opening Day, it’s not too early to start thinking about a starter.

How about Jason Hammel?

Hammel and Wei-Yin Chen are the only real contenders to start on Apr. 2 in Tampa Bay. Last year, there was no obvious starter. Jake Arrieta was chosen, but there were several candidates.

Last year, Chen was the leading winner with 12 wins and Hammel had eight, but he missed nearly half the season with an injury to his right knee.

When he was asked about the possibility, he didn’t flinch.

“Still got six weeks to go,” Hammel said with a laugh on Sunday morning.
