The Washington Nationals are a team that is ready to win now. With that being said, they seem to have trouble advancing past the National League Division Series each and every year. It is not a good look for the club, as they are mounting pressure on themselves and the city of Washington, D.C. to bring home a championship.

Time is running out, however not all hope is lost. Free agency may help the Washington Nationals get past the hurdle of the National League Division Series. Here’s why they should target RHP Jake Arrieta in free agency this offseason.

Jake Arrieta is a proven veteran pitcher who has plenty of big game experience. Arrieta is a World Series Champion with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, an All-Star in 2016, a Cy-Young award winner in 2015, and has thrown two no-hitters. He would be a great fit for the Washington Nationals, as any team would welcome more pitching with open arms. A potential trio of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Jake Arrieta could be one of the best trios in baseball, when healthy.

The Washington Nationals don’t necessarily need pitching help, however there have been many concerns over the past few seasons about the durability and overall health of their two best pitchers in Scherzer and Strasburg. Signing Jake Arrieta would be an insurance move, as he has been a generally durable pitcher.

One of the biggest reasons as to why the Washington Nationals should sign Arrieta is his big game experience. The pressure doesn’t seem to mount for Jake, as he is 5-3 with a 3.08 ERA in 9 career postseason starts.
