I got curious about sports free agency after Jered Weaver resigned with the Angels for five years and $85 million. Pitchers of his caliber on the free agent market (Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Johan Santana) pick up much larger contracts. Why didn't Weaver wait it out until free agency? Given that he was going to resign with the Angels, why did he sign when he did and not a month before or a month after? And, how do we find more people like Jered Weaver to join our team?

After working out the logic, I think I have a reasonable answer. I will be presenting my findings at the SABR conference at the end of the month, but I thought I would share my findings with Halos Heaven first, as I normally do. (This is because Angels fans are more important than everyone else.)
