Chris Johnson is on the verge of being released by Tennessee. The Cowboys have already been thrown into the speculative mix as a landing spot.

Here’s my position: the Cowboys don’t run the ball as much as they should with DeMarco Murray. Why add Johnson? That would give them two quality backs they don’t hand the ball to enough.

Yes, Johnson is a high-profile free agent. Yes, those players often get linked to the Cowboys publicly. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Would the Cowboys consider adding Johnson if the price is right? Sure. Any team would. But that doesn’t mean they are pursuing the running back. That doesn’t mean he’s a target.

The only reason to pursue Johnson would be if the Cowboys decided it was time to make a philosophical shift on offense. If this team wants to run the ball more and pass less in 2014, if it wants to de-emphasize Tony Romo and give Dez Bryant fewer opportunities, then by all means go after Johnson.
