Who is the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ most important player?

That was the topic discussed on the Sportsnet Hot Stove on Saturday.

“There is no more important Maple Leaf than Frederik Andersen,” said Brent Gunning, before being interrupted (with ferocity) by George Rusic.

“It’s not even close that Auston Matthews is the most important Maple Leaf,” retorted Rusic.

Both players have made their mark on the 2017-18 season, with Matthews continuing to be one of the world’s most lethal goal-scorers, and Andersen recovering from a shaky start to have been named the NHL’s second star of November.

Matthews might be the more exceptional talent, but the Leafs do have a plethora of high-skill forwards capable of stepping up in his absence.
