I’ve always liked the first and last weeks of spring training the most. In the first week, new faces arrive and there are some great stories to be told to readers who are starving for these profiles.

The last week could not be more different. There is an edge in the clubhouse as established players try to fix last-minute flaws and marginal players wonder if they’ve made the team.

With three days of spring training remaining in Arizona, the Giants’ clubhouse has all of that.

In my Giants feature for Monday, which you can read here, describes the morning of one pitcher with big-league experience who was demoted to the minors and seemed quite upset, more than most. But the story also has good news for this pitcher in the words of manager Bruce Bochy. It also talks about another newcomer to the Giants, who celebrated a big birthday Sunday and has an excellent chance to make the team.

In my Giants Beat, found here, you can read about Barry Zito’s final spring start, the huge out he got against a superstar hitter and how he did it. The Beat also features news on Pablo Sandoval’s latest medical tests, and an odd injury for Brandon Belt.
