General manager Mickey Loomis said he didn’t talk to any other teams about a possible trade for New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton this year and that he doesn’t “know where that stuff comes from.”

“No teams called me, and I haven’t called any teams,” Loomis said Tuesday after the first day of Senior Bowl practices, adding that, “I never got a call about any of that stuff asking me if there was any truth to it before it got put out there in the public domain.”

Other sources familiar with both the Saints and Indianapolis Colts also refuted a recent CBS Sports report that the Saints had “back-channel” communications with the Colts that broke down over the level of draft-pick compensation.

There also were reports that Payton and the Saints might consider discussing a trade with the Los Angeles Rams if all parties were interested – but no such trade talks ever materialized.

Last year, the possibility of Payton leaving seemed even more realistic, with the San Francisco 49ers and Colts emerging as possible suitors – though nothing ever got serious.
