White Sox win 3-1 in 9th on Alexei Ramirez homer

"The addition of Alex Rios presents two issues for White Sox players when they arrive at the ballpark.

Check egos at the door.

Check the lineup.

The first objective shouldn't be a problem, according to manager Ozzie Guillen.

"It came from Paul Konerko -- '[Forget] feelings, it's all about winning.' " Guillen said Tuesday night before the Sox needed Alexei Ramirez's three-run home run off closer David Aardsma with one out in the ninth inning to seize a 3-1 victory over the Mariners.

"That's what we do here. We hurt your feelings, that's easy, call your agent, your agent will call [general manager Ken Williams], and then Kenny will do something about it."

Before Ramirez's homer, the Sox were 0-49 in games in which they trailed after eight innings. Now they're two games behind Detroit in the American League Central.

"Huge game for us," Guillen said. "Not because we won, but because of the way we were playing. All of a sudden, to turn it around like that against one of their guys who had been throwing the ball unbelievably well (Aardsma).

Ramirez's homer erased the Sox struggles against Seattle rookie Doug Fister, who limited the Sox to one hit over six innings in his second major-league appearance.

Until the ninth, the Sox were held to two hits, and left-hander John Danks was destined for a tough loss despite allowing only an RBI single to Russell Branyan in the fourth.

"With this game, I think [Danks] can return to be who he is," Guillen said.

Closer Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his first save since July 20.

Meanwhile, Guillen might be forced to perform some tweaking as his No. 3-4 hitters are a combined 1-for-22 in their last three games.

Before the game, Rios, 28, said he was eager to help his new team in any way possible.

"I'm a big fan of the city of Chicago," Rios said. "It's going to be great because we have a chance to go to the playoffs."

After a pre-game chat with Guillen, Rios said he would be willing to play all three outfield positions and hit anywhere in the batting order."
